My name is Wallapa Nilploy. I graduated from an Industrial Design programme at Faculty of Architecture, King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL), Thailand. After my graduation, I began my career as a Product Designer at Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles, an organisation which aims to support local Thais. We select the local materials, then turn them into new and creative products to attract the larger market. Additionally, for three years, I have been working and exploring in multidisciplinary designs, such as Product Design, Graphic Design, and Packaging Design. I strongly believe that design can solve complex problems. Thus, my passion is to make the better well-being and to solve social issues through my design. The opportunity to learn, explore, and exchange art and designs from Italy as well as diverse people at Domus will greatly prepare me for the future works.

Queen Collection is a set of furniture design for the SUPPORT Foundation of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, which is the non-profit organisation with a vision to support local Thais through art and handicraft knowledge. The products of SUPPORT Foundation are exquisite and distinctive made by the skilful masters of handicraft. However, the traditional style of products make them hard to sell and usually have a low pricing. Notably, every part and step of the works are the handicraft pieces made from natural materials that can only be found in Thailand, such as silk thread and rattan. A set of stationery designed for the daily life of contemporary users. This collection is based on actual research from the activities of office workers. Concept: “Asia” the unique characteristic of Asia is the charm behind this design, such as Origami, the Japanese art of paper folding inherited since the 17th century. The collection consists of a partition, calendar, document tray, pencil holder, and snacks/coffee cup tray. The purpose of this design is to avoid the dullness of working. As a result, P-lay Series has more playful gimmick than the ordinary stationery. P-lay Series is the design for Woud, a Danish stationery company. The products are produced and available for sale in 2015.

“ I grewwherever up in the meadow I am, I am always a rural boy.” Both designers of Tang Collection are from upcountry, moving into an urban city to study and to pursue more opportunities. This is the reason behind the selected word, “Ban Nork” or rural. The rural reminds us of the old-fashioned, the antique, and the past, which inspired our work. Tang Collection is designed in Thai antique style. Also, Thai technique of assembling the wood and Khrae, a rustic Thai style seat, are the significant design of this furniture set. These elements are combined with Mattiazzi brand to create a new furniture collection.

Rize Collection is the co-project with a classmate to set up a furniture design studio, inspired by the selected world-class studio. The objective is to present a combination design of our studio and the chosen brand. Our studio was called “8 mm. Lens Studio”. For our design concept, We bring style of Antoni Gaudi to be inspiration. It’s called Sagrada Famillia. When we look into this style deeply, We found that he thought the best and the most beautiful structural form is tree form and human bone structure, so we bring this thought to be main design for our working set named “Raiz”. We try to combine Gaudi’s style and Carl’s Hansen style intentionally to be as one.

“Sagrada Familia” is the first inspiration for this work. Later, we found the concept behind its architect, Antoni Gaudi. He pays a lot of attention to natural structure, which we decided to pick it up. He once said that
“There is no better structure than the trunk of a tree or a human skeleton.” and it has become our motto for this project.

The chair leg is inspired by a pelvis. The signiďŹ cant function of the chair is its unique technique in setting up and assembling without the seat rail support. The supports under seat are large and durable. There is also a balance for the four parts of chair leg. We believe that the natural structure is the strongest and the most beautiful, just like what Antoni Gaudi has said. This furniture collection is the Working Set, suitable for home and ofďŹ ce usage. For the desk, the natural form of a tree branch is used in the leg’s design. Therefore, desk legs are more unique than usual.

In 2014, I participated in Asia Student Package Design Competition (ASPaC). The task was to design a new package that nobody has ever done before, under the theme “Pioneer”. “GAUGE” Portion Pasta is inspired by the various shapes of pasta. Three types of pasta are selected in this collection: Spaghetti, Farfalle, and Fusilli. The shape of packaging is made from the Origami technique, in order to create shapes of pasta. Inside the box, there is an eating instruction and amount suggestion for consumer. The package can also be used as a measurement for the amount of consumption. The packaging is the top 10 in the competition and exhibited at Thailand Creative & Design Center in Thailand and at Tokyo in Japan.

The SUPPORT Foundation, initiated by the Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother. As rural families suffer from the loss of agricultural products during the natural disaster, Her Majesty sees their handicraft skills as a great opportunity to preserve and to create a supplementary income. The Foundation’s objectives are to help rural families to earn additional income through craftsmanship as well as to preserve the local wisdom. Each region of Thailand has its own local styles of craftwork, for instance, North Eastern part is specialised in silk weaving and Northern part is specialised in various tribal textile patterns.
