The above and below models are my first view of point/line/plan models.

the development version 1 of my first idea,

the development version 2 of my first idea,

The design concept is to make a timber seats in garden that when visitors walk through they could followed the direction of seats to explore the whole garden.

8

1.1 POINT / LINE / PLANE

RICHARD SERRA’S STEEL SCULPTURE “EAST-WEST/WEST-EAST.”

Two points connect together is a line, two lines or 3 points join together form a plane, so point, line and plane are all related closely. The top left corner photograph shows Richard Serra’s steel sculpture, which is make by steel plate. The interesting part is that people could observe different forms of the whole sculpture in different directions. If people look from top, it shows several parallel lines, but if people look from front, they may found a steel plane. In my idea of point/line/plane, I want this sitting area could guide people or force people to walk along, however, visitors do not know the concept of my design, so they may forget in the middle way. From the Japanese Tea Garden showed in the bottom left corner photograph, which shows the beautiful walking way, I know that If I want people walked along, I need to design walkways or garden that attract people.

The above model is my first infill model.

Tracing from rhino model

Developing this model by adding more volumes and plans.

1.2 FRAME & INFILL

OFFICE OFF, DESIGNED BY HERI AND SALLI At first, my idea is to stick some transparency colorful paper inside, but it cannot provide a walkway for people, so it was developed by adding some volumes inside and still using colorful transparency paper. The main focus of this idea is the shadow and light that with the changing direction of light the shadows of two different colors parts may mix together, which could generate a new color on ground. So in this way, this design could bring more fun to users.

1.3 MASS

Mass building can be found easily around us, within mass system the gravity, infill, excavation and so on can be the main parts of design mass building. This design idea is inspired by bunker and Jewish museum. In the first version, I use the thick wall and underground area to represent mass building like bunkers, which have very thick and stable wall around. Some small holes to let light go through for providing light inside. In the first version I used the same size of light filter in thick wall, however, it cannot show my design concept completely. My design concept is to design a building, that when people go through can have a complexes feeling from the building. Three windows provide the first level’s light, there are two screens in the main entrance for go inside and outside. In the first level, people can look down from the windows on the floor, which provide light to the lower level. The access from upper level to lower level is a sliding, which makes more fun. And the light filter on floor gives a change of light intense. Beside the changing ceiling also give the pressure to visitors.

The circulation study shows that if visitors want to finish visit all of artworks in this Island, they must pass through the circular area shown in the map, so I chose this area as my design area.

2.1 SITE ANALYSIS AND CONCEPTACLE

In the conceptual stage, I refer design and precedent research from mass system, because I divided this area as two parts, one is lower than the ground level, another one is ground level buildings, so that I choose mass system as my main focus. An empty area on ground floor is for underground area light.

17

I started from the basic geometric form to shape my design, and the above two photos are my developed model.

18

2.2 CONCEPT AND SKETCH DESIGN

A place hidden under ground The design concept is to design a hidden place underground for people who hide their secrets in their heart to it. Secret can also be a memory that hidden in your heart for long time. Everyone has their unique memory of life, when people grow up, some secrets were not the secrets they are precious memories for you. Sometimes, we complain about life, but actually, we have got happy memory before, it was just hidden in our heart. So this building is divided in two parts, the ground level is a kind of pavilion that people could find out the entrance to get to downstairs. And for the lower level, it is separated by 6 parts, except the toilet and recording room the other four rooms are a small gallery for visitors. Some artworks could get a strong feeling to people, so that I create this semi closed room for people to enjoin the paintings individually. When we go to the museum or gallery, they almost in an opening space that you can see more works in the same time. But sometimes, we may attract by one of drawing, which could let us memorize the secret hidden in our heart to help people to find their forgotten memories.

3.0 REFLECTION In the study of earth studio, I am not only learnt the basic spatial system used by architects, but also the design process. Before I learnt this subject, I think design idea is just an abstract sentence, however, after this semester, I realized that the process of designing is more important, because it shows the way of thinking. Besides, the feedback from tutor is also helpful for me, because in the feedback, tutor can introduce some related precedent’s works to us and the advice for future development. Challenging of this subject for me is the design concept. Because I had a lots of information and ideas that I want to show in my design project, however, I do not know how to use a simple sentence to express my idea like the final project presentation. After the presentation, I review all of knowledge I have learnt in this subject, and after that I got my finial design concept. This challenging is also related to the time management in this semester. Because some of the homework I did not do it in my best, and that results in the slow design process of my final project. So in the future, I need to make a better plan to manage my time. For the improvement of my design, I think I should improve my basic architectural knowledge and digital design tools like rhino, AutoCAD Photoshop and illustrator to make a more powerful, useful and beautiful presentation poster. For example, in the final design project presentation I drawn all of architectural drawing in a wrong way, and the arrangement of poster is also not satisfied. So in the future in need to reading the recommended reading of this subject and develop the use of software.
