Legend of martenitsa At the end of his life ruler Khan Kubrat called his five sons and commanded them not to divide, to be always together can not enemies to attack and enslave.Past time, Khan died. Then attacked the Khazars and Bulgars captive daughter of Kubrat - Huba. The leader of the Huns Khan Ashina offered the children to recognize their ruler. Only then would release their sister and leave them land. Han sons faced a difficult test.Eldest son Bayan admitted Hazar rule and remained captive at his sister. Others not complied with the orders of the old inn and went in search of free land for their tribes. One of the brothers headed north, and the other Asparuh and Kuber Altsek drove south. Before leaving the brothers secretly agreed with Huba and Bayan remain Khan Ashina until they find vacantland. Then Asparuh would send them a bird tied with golden thread of the foot, which will be a sign to escape. Then the brothers set off and left the captive girl and Bayan in the hands of the evil Ashina. Not long after in Huba flown dove that had gold thread foot. As been understood Huba and Bayan escaped worst Khan and reached the waters of the Danube. Do not know what to do. Only a bird can show them the way, and they did not know how to pass on the other side. Bayan took the white thread that tied Huba foot of the pigeon. Let the bird to fly, but at this point appeared pursuers from Hun tribe who began to shoot. Bayan was wounded by an arrow and the beginning of the thread which holds, red with his blood. At this point the other bank of the river appeared Asparuh with his soldiers. Huns saw him fled.Asparuh helped Huba and Bayan to cross the river and took them to their soldiers. He took the thread of Bayan and the white end tied with red. Decorating each of its wars with peace of this sacred thread. Then Asparuh stood before the army, and admitted that he and his brothers have not listened to the counsel of his father and so have paid with their blood their disunity. Charged red and white thread never breaks because this bloody thread forever will connect Bulgaria. Since the first of March all Bulgarians are decorated with red and white martenici bearing their health, happiness and success. Martenitsa (Bulgarian: мартеница, pronounced [ˈmartɛnit͡sa], Macedonian: мартинка, Greek: μάρτης, Romanian: mărțișor) is a small piece of adornment, made of white and red yarn and worn from March 1 until around the end of March (or the first time an individual sees a stork, swallow, or budding tree). The name of the holiday is Baba Marta. "Baba" is the Bulgarian word for "grandmother" and Mart ) is the Bulgarian word for the month of March. Baba Marta is a Bulgarian tradition related to welcoming the upcoming spring. The month of March, according to Bulgarian folklore, marks the beginning of springtime. Therefore, the first day of March is a traditional holiday associated with sending off winter and welcoming spring. On the first day of March and for a few days afterwards, Bulgarians exchange and wear white and red tassels or the Pizho and Penda dolls. In Bulgarian folklore the name Baba Marta (in Bulgarian баба Марта meaning Grandma March) is related to a grumpy old lady whose mood swings very rapidly. This is an old pagan tradition that remains almost unchanged today. The common belief is that by wearing the red and white colours of the martenitsa people ask Baba Marta for mercy. They hope that it will make winter pass faster and bring spring. Many people wear more than one martenitsa. They receive them as presents from relatives, close friends and colleagues. Martenitsa is usually worn pinned on the clothes, near the collar, or tied around the wrist. The tradition calls for wearing the martenitsa until the person sees a stork or a blooming tree. The stork is considered a harbinger of spring and as evidence that Baba Marta is in a good mood and is about to retire.
