Research: The Window The Window in China- Decorative Openwork Window/ Open Tracery

Traditional Chinese windows, as known as Chinese lattice windows are mainly made of wood or stone with hollowed out pieces which simply is transparent that creates pattern. Thus suggest a great visibility and allows sunlight to irradiate desired location, also creates a great ventilated spatial structure with the mood of livelihood from the outside view. Due to the fact that lattice windows are usually carved into shape, it usually comes in one complete, seamless piece without connections. Otherwise connected at joints.

The Window in Iran - Persian Stained Glass Window

Persian windows, also known as stained glass have a great ability in spatial transformation as the sunlight irradiates through the window, transforming the gleam into a multi-coloured light or pattern depending on the window type. Though has a disadvantage in low visibility and low transparency since it has a complex pattern and colour that blocks off the view. The window frame is made of wood where there are channels for the glass to be inserted into. The colours of the glass are usually bright greens, reds, yellows, blues and sometimes colourless. Patterns are mainly comprised of many geometrical shapes such as squares and triangles. As every piece of glass has their own unique colour, perfect stained glass with gorgeous patterns are typically formed by connecting multiple pieces of glass of different shades and colours for the best outcome. 2

The shoji windows allow partial sunlight to the house, creating a more lively atmosphere since the used timber in the house is in a darker shade.

The teahouse is transformed into a meditation house. As inspired by Japanese Temple designs, the house contains a lot of elements from them, such as shoji windows and timber. The design is simple as to let shadow to be part of its design, with curved wooden panels on the roof and rotating doors from the sides, shadows can be manipulated to countless changes. The house is divided into two areas: the opened meditation zone and the private one which provides closure.

The private zone is surrounded by curved walls that has many narrow holes in it, allowing a small amount of sunlight to penetrate.

Roof panels are designed for flowing shadows which are like waves since the house is located on the pond of Bonython Park supported by stilts. These dynamic shadows decorates the simple house itself. Rotating doors also provides dynamic shadows to the house. 12
