I am a fresh graduate from the University of Adelaide. I was born and raised in Macau, and have been living in Australia for 5 years now. Arts and creative thinking were exposed to me at a young age by my parents, which lead my way of considering to become a designer one day, later I become passionate about architecture. Being passionate is not enough, especially studying aboard. I have overcome language and cultural barriers, which were initially massive obstacles on my path. The three years of my bachelor degree have done progressive and drastic changes to me, it has taught me to become highly organised, efficient and extra hardworking, and therefore progressed into achieving excellent results.

residential apartment | ground floor market Parallel Living on Pulteney is a residential apartment that provides the city a new visual effect with its unique appearance and composition that forms an aesthetical and dynamic atmosphere with the interplay of light and shadow within the building and the market by using different materials and orientations to archieve. The multisensory market underneath the aparments welcomes residents and the public to shop and meet. It consists of various shop types from small stalls to partially enclosed shops and food trucks to cafes. It also contains social areas such as landscaped sitting areas, food court and performance space. This aims to facilitate communication and to gain knowledge on different local communities in our society. Site analysis acts as a guiding light to the design process. The Adelaide figure ground is made up of rectangular geometries. To be cohesive with the existing figure ground and to integrate with the surrounding buildings, the outline of my design follows the rectangular shape of the site and the positions of my apartments follow the pattern of adjacent buildings. Sun and shade influence the most on my design. The site is light sufficient since it receives sunlight in most of the parts of the site. However, the 19m tall building on the right blocks the east of the site at 8AM to 10AM in both summer and winter meaning that if the apartments are placed on the right edge of the site they won’t be receiving any morning light. There are quite a lot of vegetation in the surroundings which gave me an idea of adding balconies, gardens and lawns to vegetate the site. Human movement is the most active from the northwest of the site. The city centre, carparks and zebra crossings are located on this side so it is ensured to provide the largest flow of people therefore the main entrance is placed on the North.

DESIGN PROCESS

The grid/module is designed according to the site analysis. Designed to receive a minimum of 2 hours of daylight per day. Therefore, buildings are oriented to north, east and west. The buildings at the back are taller than the ones in front to prevent blocking sunlight from North. East apartments are pulled back from the shaded area and some levels of west and north apartments are hollow out and turned into gardens to allow good ventilation and sunlight through the building. The height of west apartments is kept to a minimum as to prevent blocking the light to the east apartments. The center of the site is design to be hollowed to allow light penetration to the market. Glass panels are placed to let sunlight diffuse from strong to softer beams of light also to create shadows of different shapes and sizes in different times of a day.

bachelor of architectural design | semester 2, 2016 | tutor: martin larbi coordinator: elisa palazzo | individual work

walking park | urban forest | green revitalisation today for a sustainable urban forest tomorrow The site, Taperoo in Lefevre Peninsula, is a combination of residential and in-dustrial uses. One of the main issues, which is pollution, is caused by the industrial area. It is located very closed to the residential area, which pollutants are transmitted in air and water, causing negative environmental impacts to its surrounding area. As a re-sult, this creates an unwelcoming atmosphere. On the other hand, this area is lack of commercial and social spaces for people to visit, hence movement around the site is low. The proposed strategy to revitalise the site is by activating the underutilised fragments that are distributed within the site. To achieve an urban forest theme, these fragments will be highly vegetated with native plants that provide animals and insects with food and habitats, which means it can enrich habitation and biodiversity of the ecosystem.

05\

This proposal is a walking park, aiming to provide the visitors a whole new walking experience with different surfaces, gradients and heights. The entire park is divided into three main areas, the middle part is a highly vegetated forest with elevated bridges and viewing platforms, allowing visitors to view the forest in different heights and perspectives. The lower part is a space with microtopography, platforms and multifunctional sculpture, which acts as a picnic and play space area, providing visitors with a less intense leisure place. The upper part is acts as a multifunctional place, comprising attractive facilities such as a green maze, fitness park, place space, garden and social spaces. The whole proposal has also considered storm water filtering system such as rain gardens to filter polluted storm water runoff from the road. The polluted stormwater will then flow into the river and

the sea, without degrading the ecosystem in the environment. This proposal will deliver multiple environmental, social and economic values and services to urban communities. And it will alleviate pollution risks and enhance environmental quality by the enriching the ecosystem of this area and reducing pollutants from flowing to the water bodies. Integrating various facilities will also improve the security and liveability of the area, provide the public with environmental awareness and education on our ecosystem. Applying this proposal to other underutilised fragments within site C, they will then turn into attractive, multifunctional and sustainable places which will then encourage multi-directional human movement across the site. As a result, the urban fabric will be eventually revitalised.

The Terrarium is an architecture school located on North Terrace that experiments with different light and spatial qualities inside a unique structure. It is not only for students and staff but also for the public-friendly. Letting the public to interact with the school would then create a social and friendly atmostphere, also could let the public to gain more knowledge on architecture while experiencing the artistic atmostphere of the school. The interplay of light and shadows and programming is also a huge influence in my design. It allows the audience to experience the school in a multisensory way. Therefore, I believe that being lively, dynamic and interactive is the achievement in my design.

400mm thick shear walls are added to the existing vacant building walls. To achieve a futuristic and unique appearance, diagonally braced columns are added to balance the building and transfer load to the shear walls then finally to the ground. The ribs of the waffle grid model follow the shape of the building which load bearing ribs are connected to the shear walls by diagonally braced columns and minor ribs help to hold the shape of the building.

This model is a selected 15x20x30m portion of the building that shows the most interesting part of the structure which is the far right edge of the building. This part is mainly comprised of curved walls thus it shows the how the curves are being held and structured. Also, the perforated skin of the North walls was being laser cut on 2mm white screen board and then attached to the structural model, showing how the fenestration looks on the physical model.

11\

The natural strategy on the exterior blends in with its environment very well due to its translucency and the brownish-orange colour on the interior. Semi-translucent polycarbonate is used on the exterior wall to achieve an airy and lightweight look, aimed to be harmonious with other adjacent buildings without disturbing the view. Light brownish-orange timber is being used internally. Terrazzo stone is also used in the floor slabs which contains many tiny pieces of rocks in a white base to a bit of life to the interior. The artificial strategy aims to stand out amongst surrounding buildings by its unnatural, heavy and bright appearance. To do that, I have chosen to use bright coloured plastics as the materials for exterior and interior. Blue is chosen to be the colour on the exterior to stand out since the surroundings are mostly warm and orangey. Therefore, using a cold and bright colour would help to be distinct it from others. For the interior, orange is chosen to create a cheerful and lively academic atmosphere. Both opposing strategies are developed and I have chosen to apply the natural strategy on my design. The reason behind this is that the shape of the building seems unusual or avant-garde comparing to the buildings on the East side of North Terrace. Therefore, in order to find a balance point on harmony, the natural look is prefered as it is able to integrate with the environment due to its moderate and gentle tone.

bachelor of architectural design | semester 2, 2015 | tutor: meherzad shroff coordinator: prof.samer akkach | individual work

meditation pavilion | bonython park, adelaide

“Stream” is a meditation pavillion located on a pond in Bonython Park, Adelaide. It is a transformation from A1 Architects’ Teahouse in Czech Republic. The name “Stream”is taken from the unique form of the roof shaped like flowing water which creates unsual wave-like shadows as inspired by one of the quotes from “In Praise of Shadows” by Jun’ichirō Tanizaki.

“We find beauty not in the thing itself but in the patterns of shadows, the light and the darkness, that one thing against another.” ---Jun’ichirō Tanizaki. As inspired by Tanizaki’s quote, the concept of the design is to let unsual but elegant shaped shadows to act as an ornamental element to decorate and transform the interior atmosphere of the pavillion which the pavillion itself is simply designed with barely any physical decorative elements without overpowering the whole design.

13\

Site Plan The pavillion stands on the round pond supported by stilts. The reason behind the choice of location is that the circular pond symbolises a Mandala that is also in the shape of a circle, which represents the universe in Buddhism. It represents wholeness, and can be seen as a model for the organizational structure of life itself -- a cosmic diagram that reminds us of our relation to the infinite, the world that extends both beyond and within our bodies and minds. As a result, meditating on a Mandala may awaken the emotional, meditative and spiritual self in one by putting one into a meditative and calm mood hence bring minds to a higher state of realm. The pavillion is divided into two zones and they are the open and private meditation zone which has more closure. The pavillion is consist of elements from Japanese traditional teahouses such as shoji windows and timber. Shoji windows allow partial sunlight to the pavillion, creating a more lively atmosphere due to the darkness created by timber used that is in a darker shade. The simpleness of the design allows shadows to be the ornamental part of the design, with curved wooden panels on the roof and rotating doors from the sides, shadows can thereby be manipulated to countless changes of forms. Whereas, the private zone is enclosed by curved walls that has a number of slender holes punctured into it, allowing small beams of sunlight to penetrate through the walls which creates a unique and mysterious atmosphere to the area.

architecture internship | dec 2016 - feb 2017 | jwcc architecture company limited, macau

During my 2-month internship program in Macau, I was given the chance to work on an interior furnishing project with the company’s director, which I have never come in contact with any interior design projects before. The project was under preliminary design stage at that time, I was allocated with works such as site measuring, looking up for products from suppliers, materials selecting. As well as design-based works such as furniture positioning and design concept collages, etc. 26&27B is a double-storey penthouse unit in Hermitage Tower located in Cotai, Macau to accommodate an American family of 5. The apartment unit is only rented, therefore, only interior furnishing is allowed to take place.

hermitage tower 26&27B /18

The client has chosen the overall theme of the apartment to be cosy, luxurious and contemporary. Therefore, I have picked a few of Kelly Hoppen’s projects as references to assist my conceptual design. The double height living room is one of the highlights of the apartment. To create a cosy living room, a majority of the furniture have soft features. In contrast, furniture with frames and brass details are added to add some luxury. Neutral tones were picked to create a cosy environment, with a hint of navy blue to give a bit of contrast to the area. The wall at the back was painted to emphasise the highness of the area and the painting at the back wall is oriented horizontally to balance out the verticality and horizontality of the space.

Residence 26B Design Development - Living Room (Angle 1)

The dining room is a transitional space between the cosy living room and the formal family room. To create hamony for the two areas, furniture with both stiff and soft features are used. Also, since it is located beside the double height living room, it has a low ceiling height. Therefore, to enhance the sense of space, a large wall mirror is added to create an illusion of a wider space.

Residence 26B Design Development - Master Bedroom (Angle 1) Existing Condition

There are two options for the master bedroom for the client to choose from - a dark option and a bright option. For the dark option, brass, leather and dark timber are used to create a sense of luxury. However, it does not really match the overall theme. The bright option consists of oak, soft furniture and neutral colours are used to match with the cosy and luxurious theme. T +853 2833 0822 F +853 2883 1254 www. jwccarchitecture.com

readings of adelaide 2016 edited by julian worrall | machines | adelaide is cool: how is food preserved & safely delivered to our serving plates

The booming within South Australia’s cafÊ industry has raised concerns about how cafÊ food is distributed, through to the safe arrival onto serving plates. Thankfully, the advanced food preservation technologies, play the main role of the South Australian food distribution system, which especially benefits delivery and storage systems enabling them to reach a much higher efficiency. Investigating food movement, destinations, machines of preservation and storage, time restrictions and temperature control will then help to comprehend the reason behind the success. The data is then collected through a set of interviews to investigate and compare how food preservation, under these different scales and other circumstances efficiently operate.
