Dear Friends, Excitement is building here at Nine. Two of your favorite programs are returning in January, Doc Martin and Victoria. Find all the exciting details inside this issue. We are also happy to announce that later this year we will hold our second gala, scheduled for September 21. We are moving along on implementation of our 2021 Strategic Plan, approved by the board of directors in June 2018. The plan calls for continuing and strengthening our strategies and tactics around community engagement to inform content, measuring the impact of our work, maximizing our visibility in the region, and ensuring we have adequate financial resources to fund the organization To remain relevant in the current age of digital abundance, Nine needs to create original digital content to meet audiences where they are. The 2021 Strategic Plan calls for building capacity for production and distribution of digital content. Nine will follow leading practices and create content specific to the unique characteristics of each digital platform. This will allow us to continue to serve the needs of our community. Central to the plan is focusing on localized content that reflects community-identified themes and priorities. We have lots of local content planned at our upcoming events and in our Nine specials this year. We will need the community’s support to implement the plan, which includes a master facility plan to reconfigure our space with the latest technology.
Also central to our mission is education, particularly early education. We will continue to make sure that our littlest learners get the encouragement they need to succeed in school and life. On page 9 of this issue, you will meet Tina Mosley, who was selected from a group of 10 nominees, as Nine Network’s PBS KIDS Early Learning Champion. Read about Tina and the successful Edcamp for early childhood educators that took place in our building last fall. Speaking of national content with local relevance, hometown journalist, publisher and host Catherine Neville of Feast TV fame, launched a new national series in October, called tasteMAKERS. New episodes of the series continue on Nine PBS in January and February, with encores set to begin on Nine Create January 9. We will also be reading, dancing, and more in the Public Media Commons this summer. I hope you will be part of our wonderfully inspiring community in 2019. Yours truly,
Jack Galmiche President and CEO

Her Majesty, Queen Victoria, in Crisis AN ALL-NEW SEASON OF THE HIT DRAMA, VICTORIA, RETURNS.
THE WORLD PREMIERE OF VICTORIA, SEASON 3, IS JANUARY 13 AT 8 P.M. ON NINE PBS
4
January–February 2019 | nineMagazine
IT IS 1848, and revolution is breaking out across Europe. In Britain, one woman stands between order and chaos: Queen Victoria. Jenna Coleman stars as the young but fearless monarch, facing a crisis that threatens to end her reign, on Victoria, Season 3. The new season premieres January 13 on Nine PBS. The New York Times called the first two seasons “tremendously engaging… immediately gratifying.” The Boston Globe pronounced it, “captivating,” and Paste Magazine proclaimed, “Victoria is a royal masterpiece.” Continuing the story of Victoria’s rule over an empire, Season 3 introduces fascinating new historical characters, including Laurence Fox (Inspector Lewis) as the vainglorious Lord Palmerston, who crosses swords with the queen over British foreign policy. Also vexing the queen this season is Victoria’s devoted but troubled half-sister, Princess Feodora, who seeks refuge at Buckingham Palace because of political unrest back home in Germany. Other new characters include the reformist Prime Minister John Russell and the beguiling Duchess of Monmouth. Returning are Tom Hughes as Victoria’s devoted, obsessive husband, Prince Albert; the queen’s chief dresser, Nancy Skerrett; Charles Francatelli, the royal chef and cookbook king, plus a host of others. As Season 3 gets underway, Victoria is pregnant with her sixth child. But she has much else on her mind, chiefly the Revolutions of 1848, when the downtrodden throughout Europe begin agitating for the overthrow of aristocratic rule.

MORE REGAL ENTERTAINMENT In England, this discontent leads to Chartism, a set of demands for universal male suffrage, the secret ballot, equal representation for voters and other reforms that were considered radical by leading political figures during Victoria’s reign. As with many crusades, passions are aroused on both sides—sometimes violently. At the time, who knew if events might turn out like the French Revolution, which resorted to widespread use of the guillotine? Passion is also an issue in the bedroom at Buckingham Palace, where Victoria is reluctant to risk more pregnancies. Victoria and Albert, parents now of six, are at odds about their offspring, especially the troubled Bertie, the role of the monarchy and, increasingly, with each other.
Victoria & Albert: The Wedding Sundays, January 13, 20 | 9:00 p.m. Celebrate the wedding that changed British matrimonial ceremonies forever with this glorious re-imagining, hosted by Lucy Worsley. Margaret: The Rebel Princess Sundays, February 10, 17 | 9:00 p.m. This intimate two-part series profiles Princess Margaret, whose life and loves reflected the social and sexual revolution that transformed the western world during the 20th century.

nine networking Nine Celebrates Early Educators Nine Network hosted a PBS KIDS® Edcamp for Early Childhood Educators on October 13, 2018. The camp used an “unconference” professional development model where participants lead their own learning experiences. PBS KIDS Edcamp was presented in partnership with St. Louis-based Connected Learning and was free to attendees. Numerous nonprofits that focused on early childhood education attended the event, including PBS staff and visiting affiliates. The Top 10 PBS Early Learning Champion nominees from school districts across the St. Louis region were recognized. The camp’s personalized, participant-driven approach gave educators control over what they learn and fostered a strong sense of community among attendees.

of self-worth, focusing on their emotional development and meeting children where they are in life.
Mosley Named Early Learning Champion Tina Mosley (pictured above) from Our Daycare and Learning Center, Normandy, MO, was selected from a group of 10 nominees as Nine Network’s PBS KIDS Early Learning Champion. This new program recognizes committed educators who work with young children, from infants to second-graders. As our champion, she will have a variety of community-building, leadership and professional learning opportunities provided by PBS and Nine Network over the next two years. Mosley attended the National Association for the Education of Young Children Conference November 1416 in Washington DC, where she was recognized at an awards ceremony and attended the inaugural PBS KIDS Early Learning Champions Summit. “We’re so much more than ABCs and 123s!,” says Mosley. Once you see kids run to hug her or snuggle on her lap to read, it’s evident that she practices what she preaches at Our Daycare and Learning Center. As the matriarch of in-home and center child care in North St. Louis County, Mosley’s 20-year experience, humility, grace, and inspiration have led her to be a respected model for children, families, and educators in this impoverished area. She creates spaces for children to feel empowered and to develop a strong sense

In addition to helping her students develop, Tina is a lifelong learner and shares this with her staff and community. She makes the emotional development and education of her teachers a top priority so that families experience the best educators. Tina is a child advocacy leader in her community as well, serving on numerous committees of the Normandy School District. Her favorite PBS KIDS character is Curious George, she says, “because of his focus on friendship and honesty, along with his impactful sense of adventure and nostalgia.”
Early Learning Champion Nominees Mosley will join these nominees in continued professional development and connection building with Nine Network throughout 2019. Seated, left to right:

Carol Klein “Ferguson put our community at a crossroads. After artists painted boarded up windows, I published Painting for Peace in Ferguson, a book showing the amazing murals. It captures a moment when our community came together and called for a better future. The Foundation helped me create a charitablegiving fund, so that book sales benefit nonprofits and social initiatives in affected areas. The Foundation’s knowledge, charitable-giving stewardship, and expertise are invaluable.”

A Spark of Nerve This inspiring documentary looks at the groundbreaking work of Dr. Susan E. Mackinnon, director, Center for Nerve Injury and Paralysis, chief, Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and professor at Washington University in St. Louis, School of Medicine. She uses a pioneering technique called nerve transfer surgery, where patients are rewired with their own redundant nerves, to retrain the brain to move lifeless muscles. The film follows the charismatic Mackinnon and her patients from the exam room to operating room as their extraordinary stories unfold. Tuesday, January 22 | 10:00 p.m.

Work and Happiness:
THE HUMAN COST OF WELFARE Compassion fueled the creation of America’s welfare system, a safety net that rescues some of the most vulnerable among us, but is it breaking the cycle of poverty? The film examines the system through the eyes of those who are currently stuck in it to discover the struggles they are experiencing in the system that is supposed to help them ultimately get out of it. Monday, January 7 | 6:00 and 11:00 p.m.
We Are Superman A story set in the American urban core in a time when racism has gone underground, prejudice is glossed over, and progress is built on the backs of the poor. The film is an emotional testament to those working tirelessly in the heart of Kansas City, MO, at the corner of 31st Street and Troost Avenue, to transform a dividing line into a gathering place. Sealab: American Experience Sealab tells the little-known story of the daring program that tested the limits of human endurance and revolutionized the way humans explore the ocean. The massive tubular structure lowered into the Pacific Ocean was an audacious feat of engineering. As Americans were becoming entranced with the effort to land a man on the moon, these divers were breaking depth barrier records underwater. Tuesday, February 5 | 8 p.m. nineNet.org

Won't You Be My Neighbor? Fred Rogers’ career represented a sustained attempt to present a coherent, beneficent view of how television could be used as a positive force in society. Won’t You Be My Neighbor? explores his legacy, focusing on his radically kind ideas. This intimate portrait goes beyond zip-up cardigans and the land of makebelieve and into the heart of a creative genius who inspired generations of children with compassion and limitless imagination.
