Dear Friends,
Thank you for the support you have shown me, and the entire Nine staff, after the sudden passing of Jack Galmiche. Your kind words and encouragement are sustaining us during these long and difficult days. Working with Jack was exhilarating and incredibly gratifying. He left an indelible imprint on public media through his inspired leadership. He will forever be missed here at Nine, in our region, and throughout public media. I’ve been at Nine nearly 16 years, so I had the pleasure of working with Jack from the start. And our symbiotic relationship doesn’t end there. I’m a St. Louis native with fond childhood memories of Nine, like watching European soccer matches (Jack loved soccer, too). And, in a delightful twist, Jack’s wife Rosemary was one of my great high school teachers here in St. Louis! As I begin a new role as Interim President and CEO, I remain deeply committed to the power of public media to strengthen communities across the country, just as I have in my role as Senior Vice President and Chief Content Officer. There are many projects that Jack believed in and spearheaded that are coming to fruition this summer. BrainWorks, the 2015 televised special of a theatrical performance that won a regional Emmy, is back. In July, a brandnew theatrical performance based on new neurological cases involving Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, brain tumors, and stroke will open at the Repertory Theatre, July 19-21. It will be filmed by Nine for a future public television special. More information is on page 8. And, I am excited to announce that tasteMAKERS, from local journalist, publisher, and Emmy-winning producer and host Catherine
Neville, has begun filming its second season. tasteMAKERS, presented by Nine Network, is a national public television series that celebrates the makers who are rolling up their sleeves and defining the flavor of American food and drink. And, our annual Taste & See series with Nine Network and Feast TV is back for new adventures this summer and fall in the Public Media Commons. We’re so excited about our biennial Pioneer Spirit Gala weekend, September 21 and 22. This year’s gala, “Sparkle and Twang,” will feature the Country Music docuseries by Ken Burns, with special musical guest Marty Stuart, and celebrate our 65th birthday. We’ll also remember Jack Galmiche on this special weekend. Please help us spread the word about this important fundraiser. We are currently seeking sponsors for these unforgettable events. In a fitting tribute to Jack, Nine Network was awarded the 2019 Nancy and Ken Kranzberg Spirit of St. Louis Storytelling Award May 1 at a reception at the .Zack. Nine was recognized for its commitment to the advancement of storytelling and the St. Louis Storytelling Festival. Jack told great stories—just like Nine! Best,
Amy Shaw Interim President and CEO

THE ENDURING LEGACY OF
JAC K GA L M I C H E John (Jack) Galmiche III, President and Chief Executive Officer of Nine Network, died suddenly on April 16 at the age of 71. He was a strong advocate for public media’s power to be an agent for positive change.
“Jack was so clear about the purpose of public media and the difference it can make in a community. He believed that our content should reflect what matters to people and be a catalyst for change. Jack taught me so much about what it means to be a leader. He will forever be missed here at Nine and in our community,” said Amy Shaw, Interim President and CEO, Nine Network.
raised, and he was the city’s most eloquent ambassador. He was especially proud of his Nine Network family, and the work they have undertaken in the community,” said Paula Kerger, President and CEO, PBS.
Jack was a force at Nine and in the community since he arrived in 2006. A proud native of St. Louis, Jack served as executive vice president and chief operating officer of Oregon Public Broadcasting for nine years before returning to his beloved hometown.
He wanted the Nine Network to grow with the times and remain relevant, and it has come a long way since its founding days as an educational television station. He led the rebranding from Channel 9 to the Nine Network of Public Media to better reflect its focus on engagement and its expansion into multiple media platforms. He was also behind the station’s recent strategic plan that focuses on digital content and shared experiences.
“I had the opportunity to visit St. Louis several times, and his joy in introducing visitors to his hometown was infectious. He loved the community in which he was
Under his leadership, Nine produced important local content and educational resources for the region, and he helped preserve the local history, culture and

heritage of Missourians. Jack championed education for St. Louis’ youngest and most vulnerable learners and expanded the reach of Nine Network’s award-winning programming through multiple channels and digital platforms. Most recently, he enthusiastically supported Nine’s foray into digital series (The Nine Outline and Tyale McNary: He May Be Wrong, But He Doubts It are streaming now on Facebook and YouTube). He was the executive producer behind recent local specials: Rivertowns, The Story of the Central West End, The Story of Cortex, and A Century of Missouri State Parks. He championed 2016’s Gentlemen of Vision, which was screened at film festivals around the country and was invited to represent the U.S. in Colombia as part of the State Department’s American Film Showcase in March.

He focused Nine's efforts around new forms of community engagement. Nine Network became a model for national public media
Because of Jack, Nine has worked closely with hundreds of public media stations, partners and producers to strengthen public media's service through a mission-centered approach to community engagement.

He presided over the design and installation of a public collaboration and learning space, the Public Media Commons. His efforts to engage the entire community were on full display in August 2015, when hundreds gathered on the new Public Media Commons for the preview of Whose Streets, the acclaimed documentary about the unrest following the killing of Michael Brown by a Ferguson police officer in 2014. “I’m proud to have worked with Jack. I was blessed to be able to see the impact one can make on the community through public media…. His mission to inspire the community through public media will live on,” said David Steward II, Board Chair, Nine Network Board of Directors.

Neuroscience as Performance Art The facts are sobering. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website, someone in the United States has a stroke every 40 seconds, 5.7 million Americans are estimated to be living with Alzheimer’s disease, and epilepsy is the fourth most common medical condition affecting the brain. You probably know someone with one of these brain diseases. It’s a challenge for patients, and their loved ones, to understand the disease process. A new theatrical performance of BrainWorks hopes to shed light on these diseases and others by dramatizing real-life neurological cases to reveal the science behind Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, brain tumors, and stroke. What began in 2011 as an annual TED-style lecture series about advances in medicine became neuroscience theater, selling out multiple performances and introducing

DAVID KARANDISH “I want kids to access technology like I did — regardless of circumstance or where they live. That’s why we helped cofound Create a Loop through our donor advised fund. There, kids learn to develop apps and games — not just play them. I want to provide opportunities for kids on both sides of Delmar to learn computer science. So for every child who pays full tuition, another attends on scholarship. The Community Foundation helped make all of this possible.”
