Dear Friends, As we head into spring, I want to thank all of you for some of our most recent successes. We are grateful for the generous show of support from our community during our November and December membership drives. We raised $315,000 from 1,989 people, including 735 new members. It is wonderful to see the outpouring of support for public media. You can see how your investment is put to good use in our recently published 2018 annual report to the community. It is available online at ninenet.org/annual report. It's a wonderful review of the impact you enable us to have in the community. The year is off to a great start. We have made long-term commitments to our youngest and most vulnerable learners—and our work is being recognized. Nine has been selected to be part of a pilot project as a mentor station for the PBS KIDS® Parent Engagement in Schools initiative. The grant will enable us to deepen our critical efforts to bolster long-term parent engagement in high-need communities in the St. Louis region. This pilot will leverage existing PBS KIDS and PBS KIDS for Parents resources, with an emphasis on empowering parents and caregivers to support the healthy development of socialemotional, academic, and 21st-century skills in their young children. As a result, more kids will be ready for kindergarten. Our content in increasingly available anytime, and anywhere. We have created two digital series that you will enjoy watching. The Nine Outline, hosted by two of our Viewers Services representatives, is a fun, weekly rundown of fresh programming on Nine. New editions are available every Monday morning on Facebook and Instagram Stories.

Working St. Louis at nineNet.org/jobs raises awareness about the wide array of high-demand jobs and career paths attainable after high school, with or without a college degree. It features real people in real jobs. The series is part of our ongoing American Graduate initiative, which we lead locally and nationally. It’s an effort to raise awareness about the highdemand, skilled careers that will help boost our regional and national economy in the long-term. Also part of American Graduate is our Living St. Louis Special on March 25. We’re telling the stories behind the numbers in the 2018 State of the St. Louis Workforce Report, a partnership with St. Louis Community College. Our goal is to increase awareness about pathways to well-paying in-demand jobs in health care and information technology. Please tell your friends to watch the broadcast or stream online at nineNet.org/LSL. Watching Nine content on devices other than traditional television broadcast is reaching new highs. Watch your favorite programs after they air on the free PBS Video App. Supporters of Nine have access to Passport, an extendedtime on-demand library of programs. Join the streaming revolution; like us on Facebook or subscribe to the Nine Network YouTube channel to receive notifications of new episodes. You will be glad you did.

Yours truly,

THE TELEVISION EVENT (NOT A MUSICAL) AIRS IN SIX EPISODES ON MASTERPIECE, SUNDAYS, APRIL 14–MAY 19, ON NINE PBS.

W

ith a striking intensity and relevance to us today, Victor Hugo's novel is testimony to the struggles of France's underclass and how far they must go to survive. The six-part television adaptation of the renowned 1845 book will vividly and faithfully bring to life the vibrant and engaging characters, the spectacular and authentic imagery and, above all, the incredible yet accessible story that was Hugo’s lifework.

4

March–April 2019 | nineMagazine

One of the longest and most engaging novels ever written, Les Misérables is a challenging story to condense. But in a triumph of scripting, Masterpiece veteran screenwriter Andrew Davies (Pride & Prejudice, Bleak House and more than a dozen other productions) preserves Hugo’s intricate plotting, striking historical vignettes, powerful themes, and evocative characterizations, producing an epic television experience that is worthy of the original novel.

Dominic West (The Affair, The Wire) stars as Jean Valjean, the most famous fugitive in literature, with David Oyelowo (Selma, Small Island) as his relentless pursuer, Javert. Lily Collins (Rules Don’t Apply; Love, Rosie) appears as the tragic seamstress, Fantine; Ellie Bamber (Nocturnal Animals) plays her adolescent daughter, Cosette; Olivia Colman (The Favourite) and Adeel Akhtar (Unforgotten) are Cosette’s cruel overseers, the Thénardiers; and Josh O'Connor (The Durrells in Corfu) is the student and reluctant revolutionary Marius, who falls in love with Cosette at first sight. Andrew Davies says: “This is such an intense and gut-wrenching story and I am delighted that this esteemed ensemble of actors will be bringing it to life, led by Dominic West and David Oyelowo in the iconic roles of Jean Valjean and his nemesis Javert. In Valjean, we see the terrifying anger and resentment against society but also the tenderness that is hidden deep in his complex psyche. And in Javert, the ferocious dedication to duty that takes him from obsession to madness.”

From left: David Oyelowo (who stars as Javert), Lily Collins (Fantine), and Dominic West (Jean Valjean) are part of the cast. Photo courtesy of BBC/Lookout Point/David Oyelowo.

THE DIFFICULT JOURNEY TO REDEMPTION Les Misérables opens after the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, which saw Napoleon’s final defeat by the English and their allies, a quarter of a century after the French Revolution. With Napoleon’s downfall, the French monarchy is restored—and the thwarted ideals of the republic go underground. For most of that quarter century, Valjean has been serving a sentence of hard labor for stealing a loaf of bread. On his release the same year as Waterloo, he immediately resorts to petty crime, risking re-arrest and a life sentence—a fate deemed a virtual certainty by his former jailer, Javert. After this unpromising start, Valjean begins his difficult journey to redemption. But always lurking in the background is Javert, determined to bring him to justice for breaking parole and robbing a child. Establishing himself under a new name in a provincial town, Valjean seems safe at last. He prospers as a businessman and is eventually appointed mayor. One day, he gives work to a needy young woman, Fantine, who hides the fact that she is the unwed mother of a child named Cosette.

nineNet.org

As the plot unfolds, the stories of mother and daughter become inextricably entwined with that of the fugitive. Also tangled into the plot are Monsieur and Madame Thénardier, an abusive innkeeper couple who become Cosette’s guardians. Two of the Thénardiers’ children go on to play heroic roles in the Paris Uprising of 1832, which is led by the romantic idealist Enjolras. The story reaches its climax during the uprising and features an iconic escape scene through the sewers of Paris, which made the underground tunnels one of the most famous engineering marvels in the world. The first English translation of Les Misérables in 1862 left the French title (meaning “the wretched” or “the dispossessed”) in place. And so it has been known in English ever since, through countless printed editions, plays, musicals, and movies. Princeton University scholar and translator David Bellos put Victor Hugo’s masterpiece in context. “Among all the gifts France has given to Hollywood, Broadway and the common reader…Les Misérables stands out as the greatest by far.”

new on nine DOCUMENTARY ON LOCAL FOUNDER OF ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH Joseph Pulitzer: Voice of the People explores the life and legacy of Joseph Pulitzer, the father to modern journalism. Nine will host a screening of Joseph Pulitzer: Voice of the People on April. 3 Details and tickets at nineNet.org/events.

NATIONAL DOCUMENTARY ON LOCAL LEGEND Joseph Pulitzer: Voice of the People explores the life and legacy of Joseph Pulitzer, the father to modern journalism. Nine will air the documentary feature film, Joseph Pulitzer: Voice of the People, on April 12 at 8:00 p.m. on Nine PBS as part of the American Masters series. Pulitzer is an American icon who spoke of “fake news” over 100 years ago. He fought the dangers that the suppression of news had for a democracy long before our present threats to press freedom. While he is remembered for the prizes that bear his name, his own heroic battles in the face of grave illness and presidential ire have been forgotten as has the artistry and game-changing originality he brought to newspapers. How did Joseph Pulitzer, once a penniless young Jewish immigrant, come to challenge President Teddy Roosevelt over the Panama Canal, and fight for freedom of the press as essential to our democracy? Adam Driver narrates the film, Liev Schreiber is the voice of Pulitzer, Tim Blake Nelson is the voice of Teddy Roosevelt, and Rachel Brosnahan is the voice of Nelly Bly. According to an article by Tim O’Neil in the April 20, 2015, edition of the St. Louis PostDispatch, Joseph Pulitzer founded the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in 1878. He was born in Hungary and emigrated to America at age 17 to serve in the Union army in the Civil War. In 1878, he bought the failing St. Louis Dispatch and merged it with another local newspaper, the Post, to form the St. Louis Post and Dispatch. It soon became the PostDispatch. In 1883, Pulitzer bought the New York World newspaper from railroad financier Jay Gould and moved to New York, but continued operating the Post-Dispatch. His circulation battles with William Randolph Hearst’s New York Journal also created what became known as “yellow journalism”—the use of big headlines, sensational writing and illustrations to attract readers on the streets. Pulitzer Inc. was sold in 2005 to Lee Enterprises of Davenport, IA, which continues to publish the Post-Dispatch today.

Country Music Series Coming this Fall A new documentary series from Ken Burns and his team is coming this September. Country Music will chronicle the history of this unique American art form. The series will highlight southern Appalachia’s songs of struggle, heartbreak and faith, the rollicking western swing of Texas, California honky-tonks and Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry, following the evolution of country music over the course of the 20th century.

Country Music will explore the question “What is country music?” while looking at the lives of the fascinating singers and song-writers who created it—from the Carter family, Jimmie Rodgers and Bob Wills to Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Garth Brooks and more. Like the music itself, Country Music will tell stories of the hardships and joys shared by everyday people.

New Nine Digital Weekly Rundown Series In January, we brought a new concept to “air,” but you will not find it on your television. The Nine Outline is a new weekly program coming to you on Mondays at 9:00 a.m. on Facebook, so be sure to like our page. It is hosted by two Nine staffers from our Membership and Viewer Services department, Ernmardia and Sean, who happen to be huge fans of our programming. The show is improvised, but uses an outline to provide a rundown of the programs coming up on Nine PBS that week. The five-minute show is content-driven and welcoming, but fresh and a little edgy. “The show is conversational and genuine, we talk about things we know,” says Sean. The show welcomes viewers to our programming in a unique way. “I am proud to be representing the station,” says Ernmardia.

Pioneer Spirit Gala Our biennial Pioneer Spirit Gala will take place the evening of September 21 at the Ritz-Carlton St. Louis. In 2019, we will mark our 65th year as a public media organization, highlight the history of country music, and raise funds to support our work in the community. Corporate tables and sponsorship opportunities are available at nineNet.org/gala.

Mrs. Wilson on Masterpiece At the outset of World War II, Alison McKelvie, a secretary with the Secret Intelligence Service fell in love with an older man—Major Alexander Wilson, a popular author of spy novels then doing real intelligence work for the war effort. Little did she know, but she was entering a plot as tangled as one of his mind-bending books. Ruth Wilson (The Affair, Luther) stars as her own grandmother Alison in the true story of a woman’s search for her husband’s real identity. Sunday, March 31 | 8:00 p.m. (Part 2, April 7)

Radical Grace captures a period of dramatic transformation as the Catholic Church grapples with the modern world. Three fearless nuns risk their place in the Church to follow another higher calling: social justice. One sister takes on Church patriarchy, another finds hope in the former prisoners she counsels, and the third launches a cross-country Nuns on the Bus tour.

The film investigates Li Ling-Ai, the uncredited female producer of Kukan, a landmark color film that revealed the atrocities of World War II China to American audiences. Kukan has the rare honor of being the first-ever American feature documentary to receive an Academy Award in 1942. Lost for decades, the filmmaker pieces together the never before told inspirational tale of the two renegades behind the making of it.
