IN MEMORIAM JACK GALMICHE (1948—2019)

For Members of the Nine Network of Public Media

30th Anniversary of National Memorial Day Concert p. 4 Dancing in the Commons Returns p. 8 Celebrate Kids to Parks Day with Nature Cat p.10

IN MEMORIAM JACK GALMICHE (1948—2019) At press time, we unexpectedly lost our president and CEO, Jack Galmiche. Jack passed away suddenly at the age of 71. We are all heartbroken. We will celebrate his life and legacy in the next issue when we fully come to grips with his passing.

We felt it appropriate to publish his last letter to honor his memory, which hints at his legacy. In February he received the Pillar of Public Service Award from America's Public Television Stations for his leadership in public media and an award from his alma mater, Saint Louis University, for his distinguished career. Please keep the family in your thoughts.

On behalf of his Nine Network family, David Steward II Chair, Nine Network Board of Directors

Dear Friends, Imagine my delight at being inducted into the 2019 Billiken Hall of Fame and honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award and the Bob Burnes Award as a member of the 1967 men’s soccer team. Being a member of the 1967 and 1969 championship teams was an experience for the ages. The pride of representing St. Louis University and the city of St. Louis has shaped my professional life. I am proud to be a lifelong Billiken, a native son of St. Louis, and committed to a career of public service to improve the lives of the people in our region. I also proudly accepted America's Public Television Stations’ Pillar of Public Service Award for Nine’s civic leadership in bringing the community together to find solutions to important issues like the mortgage crisis, high-school graduation rates, early education, the gap between employment skills and available jobs in the St. Louis market. And for creating the Public Media Commons and chronicling the history and culture of the St. Louis region through hundreds of hours of locally produced programming. These accolades would not be possible without your support. Because of our community of supporters, Nine Network can proudly champion local or national stories that educate, engage, entertain, connect and challenge people.

Most of our events are free and they are listed at nineNet.org/events. See page 8 for the Dancing in the Commons schedule. We are prepping for our biennial gala this fall. We will delve into the history of country music, mark our 65th year as a public media organization, and raise funds to support our nationally recognized work in the community and our one-of-a-kind programs, like September’s eight-part Country Music series from Ken Burns’ team. We have tied the milestone of Nine’s 65th birthday on September 20 to the levels of sponsorship for the Pioneer Spirit Gala: Sparkle and Twang on September 21. Research shows that public television audiences see organizations that are affiliated with Nine Network as concerned about and contributing to the community. Please contact me if you are interested in sponsoring this one-of-a-kind event. Another way for the community to support us is during Give STL Day on May 1. Take pride in your community by going to givestlday.org and contributing any amount you can. We are truly grateful to our community of supporters for helping us fuel positive change in the St. Louis region by telling stories that matter. Yours truly,

One of the places you will find us bringing stories to life is in the Public Media Commons. The Public Media Commons continues to be a unique outdoor space for creative expressions and community gatherings. If you haven’t visited the award-winning Public Media Commons, you will have lots of opportunities to do so in the coming months.

Jack Galmiche President and CEO

Powell USA (Ret.); Academy Award-nominated actor Sam Elliott (A Star Is Born); “Godmother of Soul” and Grammy Hall of Famer Patti LaBelle; multi-Grammy Award-winning bluegrass legend Alison Krauss; platinum-selling country music star Justin Moore; and television series star Jaina Lee Ortiz (Station 19, Rosewood). 4

BROADCAST WILL FEATURE POWERFUL STORIES

at 7:00 p.m., with a rebroadcast immediately following at 8:30 p.m. The concert is also broadcast to our troops serving around the world on the American Forces Network.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the D-Day invasion. Through the eyes of a highly decorated combat medic who landed in the first wave on Omaha Beach, the concert will pay tribute to the heroes who sacrificed and died in service to our nation and the world during World War II. Follow the story of two infantrymen who formed a brotherhood while serving in Vietnam and now meet each year at the Wall. A special 50th anniversary commemoration honors the service and sacrifice of veterans of the Vietnam War. For Gold Star families, every day is Memorial Day. This year, the concert will share Ursula Palmer's journey, beginning with the day her worst fears came true. While she could never “move on” from this devastating loss, she knew that for the sake of her daughter she would have to learn to move forward. Along the way she found solace and empowerment in helping other widows and widowers. The National Memorial Day Concert is broadcast live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC, Sunday, May 26, nineNet.org

The broadcast will share the story of Ernest "Pete" Peterson, who served in a Self-Propelled Artillery Unit in the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in Vietnam. Courtesy of Capital Concerts. nineMagazine | May–June 2019

Gentlemen of Vision Screened in Colombia In March, Nine’s Gentlemen of Vision was screened in Cartagena, Colombia, as part of the American Film Showcase (AFS), a cultural diplomacy program of the U.S. State Department. The film’s co-directors Jim Kirchherr, Nine Network senior director of content, and Frank Popper, independent producer, and Marlon Wharton, founder and coach of Gentlemen of Vision, traveled to Colombia in support of the film for screenings, workshops, and discussions with groups of young people. “You arrive seeing the differences among us, and you leave appreciating the similarities,” says Kirchherr.

“Man-in-the-Loop” Series

The project came about when filmmaker and producer Frank Popper was considering him as a subject for his latest documentary, after he appeared in the Nine-produced Gentlemen of Vision. “The camera loves him…After months of following him with a camera, a doc wasn’t coming to me, but I noticed…he had hilarious observations about life. I realized that he was able to see an issue from multiple perspectives.” “I hope that the show challenges people to think and to view the world as a place we have the power to change for the better, in addition to having uncontrollable outbursts of laughter,” says McNary. “Although the show focuses on the divides we face, it also shows just how much we all have in common.” The show is distributed in conjunction with the Delmar Loop, which serves as an exclusive filming location for interviews. “The Delmar Loop is a celebration of people from all walks of life and it’s one of the most diverse business districts in the St. Louis region,” says Rachelle L’Ecuyer, executive director of the Delmar Loop. “Helping to promote the series is a natural extension of what the Delmar Loop is all about.”

One Child

The 2008 Sichuan earthquake, killed 90,000 people, including more than 5,000 children. In China the tragedy was compounded by the one-child policy. In response to the earthquake, China's government made an exception for those who lost their only child to conceive another. One Child follows the journey of three families as they try to restore a sense of normalcy and struggle to move past the loss of their children. Sunday, May 12, 10:00 p.m.

The Best of the Buddy Rich Show A collection of big band performances recorded in 1982 but never broadcast – in fact, never edited. In that year, the legendary drummer was offered the chance to host his own television program. Three programs were filmed at New York City’s venerable Statler Hilton Hotel, each featuring Buddy Rich and his band with special guests: Ray Charles, Woody Herman, Lionel Hampton, Stan Getz, Gerry Mulligan, and Mel Torme. The Lavender Scare In 1953, President Eisenhower declared gay men and lesbians to be a threat to national security. Over the next four decades, tens of thousands of government workers would lose their jobs for no reason other than their sexual orientation. But the actions of the government had an unintended effect. They inadvertently helped ignite the gay rights movement. Tuesday, June 18, 8:00 p.m.
