Dear Friends, Thanks to our viewers from around the region, the ratings for Country Music were off the charts! Nine PBS had the highest market-share ratings in the country for the entire run of Ken Burns’ eight-episode series. If you missed this landmark series, you can stream online! Nine members at the Passport level have extended access to the series through March 2020. And, an encore presentation of the series is set for January 2020 on Nine PBS. Country music was also the theme for our biennial gala this past September, which was also met with resounding success! We raised more than $700,00 to support our programs, our community engagement work, our facilities and our future! Thank you for all those who made it an evening to remember, including the terrific sponsors you see listed on page 7. If September is gala season in St. Louis, then December is the giving season. I ask you to consider an end-of-year contribution to Nine in your annual giving plans. Nine has a dynamic strategic vision for the future of public media and for our region. But, we need the community’s support to continue to bring you more of what you love about Nine: more educational and entertaining programs, more local productions, more on-demand content, more learning opportunities for kids, and more lifting the region up to meet its great potential.
The region’s potential is rooted in its youth. Read about how Nine is helping to change the conversation about high-demand skilled career pathways in our cover story on page 4. We continue to lead public media’s American Graduate initiative—Getting to Work. Nine’s broad reach is shining a light on the importance of positive outcomes for young people and that means illuminating pathways to gainful employment in our region. You can play an important role in changing perceptions about credentials, certificates and on-the-job training. Read more about American Graduate and share your thoughts with me. Getting young adults to work helps improve our regional economy through financial stability and strengthening civic life. Best wishes for a joyous holiday season.

A CHANGING WORLD OF WORK
F
or years, there has been a prevailing narrative that the only definition of success is to work toward a four-year degree immediately after high school. But our region’s employers are sharing a different perspective. Through American Graduate, Nine is working with partners to provide a more inclusive definition of success after high school, one that encompasses many viable pathways into fulfilling and well-paying careers. Nine—along with its wide network of trusted partners in the workforce space—is highlighting the changing world of work, the pathways into well-paying indemand jobs, and the resources available for people looking to start or change careers. Nine’s American Graduate work tells stories about high-demand skilled careers—those career paths that require education and training beyond high school, but not necessarily a four-year degree to enter. These stories increase awareness of opportunities for young people and inspire a more diverse

definition of success for our region’s youth. Our broad reach across many platforms brings the initiative’s mission to a large audience across Missouri and Illinois: to help young people succeed in school, career and life. Nine's local partners in American Graduate consist of more than 60 trusted community organizations in multiple spheres—education, nonprofit, government, and business. The on-the-ground perspectives of our partners help us create relevant, meaningful content that impacts the St. Louis region. Clayco, one of the nation's largest privately-owned real estate, architecture, engineering, design-build and construction firms, is one such partner. Clayco’s partnership with American Graduate has enabled it to expand its Construction Career Development Initiative (CCDI) by opening “a whole new world of partnerships and collaborations that we didn’t know existed,” says Dan Lester, Clayco’s director of field diversity, inclusion and culture.
nineNet.org
“If it wasn’t for American Graduate, I would not have known about other programs occupying the same space in different industries, like LaunchCode and CyberUp. American Graduate has done a great job of getting the message out in the metro area.” Because of Nine specials like The Skills Gap: A Living St. Louis Special, says Lester, “we have been able to make lasting partnerships in other areas outside of ours with people who can help us in other places.” American Graduate helped Clayco connect to the St. Louis Community Credit Union’s Sure Rides® auto loan program. Sure Rides helps qualified, low-income, credit-challenged clients of workforce development agencies get to work by giving them access to affordable car loans. Partners like these bring “value and added resources to those we serve,” says Lester. “Until that special came out, I did not know the Nine Network had that kind of reach. The amount of people being exposed to [this initiative] is unreal. … Now, we are being sought out to come into school districts. Before, we had to beat down doors to introduce these options to their students. High schools are now more open to preparing people for the future that they want.” The Skills Gap: A Living St. Louis Special can still be seen at nineNet.org/skillsgap.
The message is resonating. In a few short years, the narrative around college versus credentials, certificates and on-the-job training is beginning to shift. American Graduate is largely responsible for that, says Lester.
A NATIONAL INITIATIVE Nine has always been invested in the future of St. Louis, from our founding principles as an educational station for children and adults to our current mission to ignite the spirit of possibility through quality content and civic engagement. As the national leader in public media, Nine was sought out to lead the local/national American Graduate initiative. At its beginning, American Graduate focused on improving outcomes for all young people, specifically increasing high school graduation rates. As graduation rates have continued to climb, American Graduate evolved to focus on what happens after high-school graduation. In American Graduate: Getting to Work, Nine Network manages the work of 19 public television and radio stations across the United States. Over the past 18 months, these stations have created over 500 stories that help change perceptions around high-demand, skilled careers. Shared on television, radio, social media, and via partner networks, American Graduate stories have been seen over 180 million times across the nation. Nine Network’s role in American Graduate reinforces our role as a national leader in community engagement.

On August 22, 2019, Nine Network hosted a townhall-style production—Now Hiring: A Skilled Workforce (see photo on page 4). Moderated by Nine’s senior director of content, Jim Kirchherr, this panelled conversation captured the challenges and solutions to recruiting a skilled workforce for the region’s in-demand jobs. The resulting special was broadcast on Nine PBS on September 30 and can still be viewed at nineNet.org/nowhiring.

More than 100 people attended the town hall, representing business, education, government, and nonprofit organizations throughout the bistate region. In addition to many regional experts, Missouri Governor Mike Parson and St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson attended and participated in the discussion. The special is an introduction to programs in our region that are preparing young people for pathways into well-paying careers and explores how to increase the number of people entering these careers.
WATCH JOURNEY TO JOBS Journey to Jobs is another American Graduate: Getting to Work special you don’t want to miss. The special airs November 16 at 4:00 p.m. on Nine PBS. It’s hosted by PBS NewsHour’s Hari Sreenivasan from the Tisch WNET Studios at Lincoln Center in New York City. The program tells the story of how communities across the country are providing support, advice, and intervention services to youth, veterans, and adults in career transition. In Journey to Jobs, viewers hear directly from job seekers and the newly employed, business and nonprofit leaders, as well as program staff, volunteers and mentors as they work to create pathways to high-demand skilled careers.

SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT McKay Bailey, 19, is receiving on-the-job training as a software developer at Equifax, Maryland Heights, MO. He has an associate degree in arts and science from Southwestern Illinois College, Belleville, where a Java class piqued his interest in the lucrative field of software development. He got his start at LaunchCode’s free educational opportunity to veterans and their families in O’Fallon, IL. Bailey’s father is a veteran. He learned core concepts of code and web development, which put him on his job-oriented skills track. “I’m learning a lot,” says Bailey, who sees the “invaluable experience” as a launch pad for a future at a technology start-up.
EMERGENCY SERVICES Parker Malensky, 20, has been an emergency medical technician (EMT) at Christian Hospital Emergency Medical Services (EMS), BJC HealthCare, providing emergency services to North St. Louis Country fire districts for the past 18 months. Malensky is following a pathway to become a firefighter, first attending Respond Right, St. Charles, MO, then Christian Hospital EMS Academy, and he starts at the St. Louis Fire Academy in January 2020.
CONSTRUCTION Eonna Anderson, 18, is currently getting on-thejob training as a sider at commercial and residential contractor, Builder’s Bloc, in Chesterfield, MO. It’s a great start for someone who wants to work in the building design industry. After graduating from North Technical High School, Florissant, MO, this past June, a semester at the CCDI Construction Academy at Clayco, and her position at Builder’s Bloc, she will start a Carpenters Joint Apprenticeship Program in Affton, MO, in December that she hopes will lead to a construction management degree and career.

Kinky Boots Membership special on Friday, November 29 at 8:00 p.m. Kinky Boots is the 2013 Broadway blockbuster with music and lyrics by pop icon Cyndi Lauper and a book by Tony-winning theater legend Harvey Fierstein that went on to pick up a Tony, a Grammy and London’s Olivier Award. Based on true events, this bighearted hit tells the story of two people with nothing in common—or so they think. Charlie is a British shoe factory owner struggling to save his family business. Lola is a fabulous nightclub entertainer with a wildly exciting idea. The unexpected duo learns to embrace their differences and create a line of sturdy, stiletto-heeled boots for an entirely new clientele. But, their most meaningful achievement is their friendship.

The 1981 Tony Award winner for Best Musical, 42nd Street is the American dream fable of Broadway. Fresh-off-the-bus Peggy Sawyer gets her shot at the top when the leading lady gets injured. The musical is set to a score of iconic songs, including “Lullaby of Broadway,” “We’re in the Money,” and the showstopping title song.
Alfred Molina reprises his acclaimed performance as the American abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko in Red. Set in contemporary Georgia with an election race underway, Much Ado About Nothing finds the community of Messina celebrating a break from an ongoing war, but not all is peaceful amid the merriment. Former rivals battle it out, revenge is sought, and trickery runs amok in this timeless comedy of romantic retribution and miscommunication. The play was recorded during its final weekend of New York’s Free Shakespeare in the Park in June 2019.

This critically acclaimed 2015 production of the classic 1951 musical went on to win the Tony Award for Best Musical Revival. Backpack Giveaway Breaks Down Barriers and Builds Connections
A
ccording to KidSmart, 90,000 St. Louis area children cannot afford basic school supplies each year. To help meet this critical need, Spire employees distributed more than 1,100 backpacks to four schools in North St. Louis earlier this year. “Our population has so many needs,” Kate Stewart, Saint Louis Public Schools representative, said. “We really value Spire’s ongoing commitment to providing backpacks with school supplies for our children.” Spire launched the backpack giveaway five years ago to reflect its commitment to the areas it serves. This year, backpacks were distributed at Herzog Elementary, Clara Elementary, Laclede Elementary, and Nance Elementary. Schools were selected based on areas where Spire field crews are active. Field crew members helped distribute the backpacks and engage students. “We do this in areas where our people are working so we can better connect with the community,” Rex Thompson, Spire human resources team member, said. “The kids are excited to see us; some even recognize crew members from their neighborhoods or ask for hugs.” Each backpack contained snacks, writing utensils, binders, erasers and notebooks. The Principal of Nance Elementary, Natasha Mitchell, said having these materials brings students one step closer to having a productive school year.

nine networking Preview Screening and Discussion Nine will host a preview screening and discussion of College Behind Bars in collaboration with the National Conference for Higher Education in Prison on Thursday, November 14, at 7:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency at the Arch.
From award-wining filmmaker and Ken Burns collaborator, Lynn Novick, the film reveals the transformative power of higher education through the experiences of incarcerated men and women. A Nine-moderated panel discussion with filmmaker Lynn Novak and audience Q&A will follow the preview. The four-hour series, which premieres November 25 on Nine PBS, explores the lives of a dozen incarcerated men and women as they struggle to earn degrees in the Bard Prison Initiative (BPI), one of the most rigorous and effective prison education programs in the country.
In the nearly 20 years since the Bard Prison Initiative began, more than 500 alumni have been released, and fewer than four percent have gone back. The program currently enrolls 300 men and women in six prisons.

The Future of Nine Depends
ON YOU
Mike McGrath, a resident of Ferguson, knows that when you get behind an organization, it enhances it, strengthens it, and makes it grow. That’s why he is a Legacy Nine member. By including a bequest to Nine in your will or living trust, you are ensuring that Nine will be here for future generations as a trusted voice that informs, educates and enriches the lives of the St. Louis community. Visit nineNet.org/support or contact Roya Bromell at (314) 512-9129, plannedgiving@ketc.org.
“You are only as strong as your community. I’ll know that a little piece of me, somewhere down the road, helped the Nine Network.” —Mike McGrath,
Legacy Nine and Torchlight Society Member, Volunteer

Thank you. Please return your completed form in the
envelope provided in the middle of this magazine. Your information will be held in the strictest confidence.
¨ I am considering including Nine Network in my will, but I would like more information. Please send me more information.
