upgrades to our home in Grand Center to welcome our community and be technologically ready for the next chapter.
Your support enabled us to share the trusted storytelling of Ken Burns’ in his latest documentary, Country Music. Our viewers made Nine PBS the second highest market-share-rated public television station in the country for the entire run of the eight-episode series! Thank you for making that happen! The series will have an encore presentation on Friday nights beginning January 3.
We will also commemorate the late Jack Galmiche’s lasting impact on Nine as we rename the Public Media Commons in his honor.
Your support makes local content like Living St. Louis and Donnybrook possible. It helps us share the experiences of black police officers in Of Black and Blue. It helps our ability to distribute PBS KIDS content across two channels (32.5 hours daily of curriculum-based content), online and via apps for our youngest learners. Most recently, your support made it possible for us to bring you fair and balanced coverage of the impeachment hearings.
We look forward to welcoming you back to Nine in the New Year as we celebrate progress, share new stories, and explore new ideas that challenge our region. Best,

THE ORIGINAL HOME OF
Cooking TURNS UP THE HEAT
Explore rich food traditions and diverse cultures across America with new seasons and series. PBS is the original home of cooking and still offers the very best in food and cooking. From A Chef’s Life to The Great British Baking Show to Martha Bakes, PBS programs and chefs have received more Peabody Awards, Daytime Emmy® Awards and James Beard Foundation Awards than any other network. And, Nine PBS is set to reclaim the cooking mantle. January marks the premiere of three programs. A new series from Vivian Howard, the host of the award-winning series A Chef’s Life, is set to debut in late March—South by Somewhere. Nine PBS airs cooking programming Monday– Friday, from 1-2 pm, Saturday and Sunday from 10 am–2 pm, primetime specials, and on the Nine Create channel.
Cuisine and Heritage of Immigrant Communities No Passport Required, hosted and executive produced by renowned chef Marcus Samuelsson, will return for a second season on Monday, January 20, 9 pm, on Nine PBS. Once again, Marcus will explore six different American cities, visiting with both professional chefs and home cooks, for an in-depth look at the rich diversity of immigrant traditions and cuisines woven into American food and culture. In Season 2, No Passport Required will travel to Houston, home to one of the highest numbers of West African expatriates of any U.S. city; the Filipino American community in Seattle, who are part of the city’s longstanding Asian Pacific American heritage; Los Angeles, where the world’s second-largest Armenian community resides; and Boston, where Marcus explores Portuguese-speaking cultures and cuisines from three different locales: Brazil, Cape Verde and Portugal. Other episodes focus on the Chinese American community in Las Vegas, which has grown tremendously over the last 20 years, and

Philadelphia, where Italian Americans have thrived for generations. In each city, he’ll visit local restaurants, markets and family homes, learning about each community’s cuisine and heritage. An immigrant himself—born in Ethiopia, raised in Sweden, now a celebrated chef, restaurateur, author and resident of Harlem—Samuelsson is passionate about sharing and celebrating the food of America’s vibrant communities. Each episode shows how important food can be in bringing Americans—old and new—together around the table. “I’m so happy to be working on a second season of No Passport Required,” says Samuelsson. “We have only begun to scratch the surface of the amazing range of immigrant cultures and cuisines found in the U.S. It’s exciting to go on this journey once again and bring attention to these diverse communities that contribute so much to our nation.”
New Food Maker Movement On the heels of a successful debut on public television stations nationwide in late 2018, all-new episodes of tasteMAKERS will begin airing Sunday, January 5, 6:30 pm, with encores Thursday evenings at 10 pm and Saturdays at 6:30 pm. From caviar made in the hills of North Carolina to singlevarietal sake brewed in Oakland, CA, to old-world-style charcuterie made in Indianapolis, producer and regional Emmy-winning host Cat Neville (below) dives deep this season to tell the full story of the food movement through the eyes of the people who are redefining the flavor of American cuisine. tasteMAKERS’ visits two unique locations in the new season: an Indian reservation north of Phoenix and sugarcane fields in Honolulu. Nine Network continues as the program’s presenting station and is working with American Public Television to distribute tasteMAKERS nationwide. tasteMAKERS can be streamed online at nineNet.org and on the PBS App. Continued on next page

Hearty and Healthy Vegetarian The British chef Jamie Oliver (left) is known for his approachable cuisine, which has led him to front numerous television shows. You might remember him from Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution, which aired on ABC during 2010 and 2011. In the first season, he visited Huntington, WV, statistically one of the unhealthiest cities in the U.S., to try to improve its residents' eating habits. In Season 2, he visited Los Angeles, where his crusade to change school meals was met with resistance. His latest series, Jamie’s Ultimate Veg, encourages meat-eaters and vegetarians alike to put vegetables at the front and center of their plates, providing simple tips and techniques for turning ordinary veggies into extraordinary main dishes. Seeking inspiration from around the U.K. and the globe, Jamie cooks up a stunning collection of beautiful, vibrant, hearty and healthy vegetarian dishes that are so delicious and easy to make, you won’t even miss the meat. Jamie’s Ultimate Veg airs Saturdays, at 10:30 am, beginning February 1, on Nine PBS.

new on nine New British Period Drama on Sunday Nights The sumptuous period drama, Sanditon, brings Jane Austen’s final unfinished work to life in an eight-part series on Nine PBS. Adapted by Emmy® and BAFTA-winning screenwriter Andrew Davies (War & Peace, Les Misérables, Pride and Prejudice), the miniseries premieres Sunday, January 12 at 8:00 pm. Jane Austen started work on the witty and delightful novel when she was chronically ill with a mysterious disease. She never finished it. Sanditon on Masterpiece tells the story of the joyously impulsive, spirited and unconventional Charlotte Heywood and her spiky relationship with the humorous, charming (and slightly wild!) Sidney Parker. The twists and turns of the plot, which takes viewers from the West Indies to the rotting alleys of London, exposes the hidden agendas of each character and sees Charlotte discover herself and ultimately find love. Remarkably, even as Jane Austen was succumbing to the ravages of her fatal illness, she chose to lampoon the contemporary fad for tonics, sea water cures, and other medical remedies. This adaptation imaginatively enters this world of Georgian-era suitors, hustlers, and health cranks. The miniseries adaptation of Howards End premieres Sunday, January 12 at 7:00 pm, right before Sanditon.

Nine PBS Celebrates Black History American Masters: Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool Tuesday, February 25, 8:00 pm This documentary boasts neverbefore-seen footage of the legendary musician, including studio outtakes from recording sessions, rare photos and new interviews.
Independent Lens: Cooked: Survival by Zip Code Monday, February 10, 9:00 pm
The effects of the July 1995 Chicago heat wave claimed the lives of more than 700 mostly poor, elderly and African American residents. This story of life, death and the politics of crisis in an American city reveals the less newsworthy, but long-term, issues of pernicious poverty, social isolation and racism.
Finding Your Roots
Tuesday, February 11, 7:00 pm In a new episode entitled “Slave Trade,” Henry Louis Gates, Jr., takes film director Ava DuVernay, actor S. Epatha Merkerson and musician Questlove to the unexpected places where their ancestors were scattered by slavery.
Claudia’s fight for justice intersects with stories of other communities experiencing the lingering impact of more than a century of lynching African Americans.
The Long Shadow
Sunday, February 23, 4:00 pm, and Wednesday, February 26, 10:00 pm When a daughter of the South, director Frances Causey, sets out to find causes for the continuing racial divisions in the U.S., she discovers that the politics of slavery didn’t end after the Civil War. In an astonishingly candid look at the history of anti-black racism in the U.S., the film traces the imposition of white privilege and its ultimate manifestation: slavery.
Hollywood's Architect: The Paul R. Williams Story Friday, February 28, 10:00 pm
Independent Lens: Always in Season
Monday, February 24, 9:00 pm In August 2014, African American teenager Lennon Lacy was found hanging from a swing set in Bladenboro, NC. His death was ruled a suicide, but Lennon’s mother, Claudia, believes her son was lynched.
This documentary, narrated by actor Courtney B. Vance, tells the story of African American architect Paul R. Williams as he defied the odds to become one of the most notable architects in history. His fortitude and talent led him to design iconic homes and buildings for movie stars and moguls, in spite of personal tragedy and racial prejudice. nineMagazine | January–February 2020

PBS Updates Visual Brand Across Platforms
AFTER
“Our new look and feel better represents... today’s digital age, while also preserving the most iconic aspects of this beloved brand. From broadcast to every major streaming platform, from your screens to your communities, we’ve created one connected experience that spans PBS locally and nationally,” says Ira Rubenstein, Chief Digital & Marketing Officer, PBS. The new look will span broadcast, mobile, and digital, making it easier to identify and rediscover the PBS content audiences know and love across platforms. The new logo is an evolution of its iconic symbol, with simplified and enlarged typography, a proportionally larger PBS head with the noses slightly tilted up so the heads gaze upward, toward a “beacon of thoughtfulness.” The new brand identity also features a new, vibrant signature color, PBS Blue, designed to convey a sense of trust and integrity. The new identity will roll out throughout 2020 as PBS celebrates its 50th operational anniversary on October 5, 2020.

Andi Harpring (left), Nine’s Community Engagement Manager for America Graduate, with Jeff L. Pittman, Chancellor, St. Louis Community College, accepted the award on Nine’s behalf.
Nine Network received the News Media Award from the Missouri Community College Association (MCCA) in November. The award recognized Nine's work in promoting the mission of community colleges, the challenges and opportunities they face, and Nine's role as a valued partner in promoting and supporting awareness of workforce development issues in the region. Nine’s local work and executive producer role in the American Graduate initiative was cited as a vital connection point between the MCCA and the region’s people and businesses, including The Skills Gap: A Living St. Louis Special, which drew from research in the St. Louis Community College’s State of the St. Louis Workforce Report. Nine provided onsite video production of the 2018 presentation of the report. The content was enriched with the stories behind the data in Living St. Louis: American Graduate. Nine’s work also dove deeply into training programs in Living St. Louis: The Skilled Technician Pipeline and included short video broadcasts about career pathways. These specials can still be streamed online at nineNet.org.

Independent Lens: The First Rainbow Coalition In 1969, the Chicago Black Panther Party began to form alliances across lines of race and ethnicity with other community-based movements in the city. Hollywood's Architect: The Paul R. Williams Story Nicknamed “Architect to the Stars,” African American architect Paul R. Williams’ list of residential clients included Frank Sinatra, Cary Grant, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. His name is associated with architectural icons like the Beverly Hills Hotel and LAX Airport, but at the height of his career he wasn’t always welcome because of his race. Williams’ talent, determination and charm defied the odds and created a body of work that can be found from coast to coast. Thursday, February 27, 10 pm
