Dear Friends, One of my favorite parts of my role at Nine is hearing from you. I’ve received many letters from members, viewers, and kids over the past six months applauding Nine’s ability to react quickly to the changing needs of the community. It’s a humble reminder of how valued and valuable we are in our region. This year has been like no other. And we’ve responded. We are proud that Teaching in Room 9 is resonating and giving parents and kids an alternative classroom-like experience. Since its premiere in April, it has become our region’s largest classroom. If you think about an average class size of 25 students, Teaching in Room 9 has taught over 25,000 virtual classroom lessons from April–September. We are hard at work on new episodes that will take us through December. We’re taking our cue from trusted education leaders from across the region to inform how we structure this service. Our digital team has continued highlighting community voices and we released three digital shorts on voting. Our feel-good viral video on the Red and Black Brass Band performing and bringing joy to people in St. Louis neighborhoods got the attention of PBS NewsHour producers, who aired it in late summer. The story has been seen millions of times and showcases the best of our St. Louis region. Nine continues to grow and adapt to the world we live in right now. Look for a new half-hour program, called Donnybrook Next Up, on Thursdays at 7:30 pm starting November 5. It was conceived during the pandemic because the cast and crew are
producing Donnybrook via Zoom from home and wanted the opportunity to go deeper with influencers in our region. And drumroll, please....Coming in early January 2021, we’ll launch a new organizational logo and branding, along with a redesign of Nine Magazine. Your investment in Nine makes our ability to respond to our community possible. As we close out a very uncommon year, your investment in Nine matters more than ever. I urge you to please remember Nine during this season of giving and, as you are able, contribute at ninenet.org/support. Your investment in our future will enable us to produce local content (like November's Songs for St. Louis: A Concert in the Commons and Living St. Louis Special: Kids Race, and Racism) and continue our trusted partnerships with organizations who are making a difference in the lives of individuals, families, the arts, our planet, and more. Thank you to the Community of Supporters you see listed in this issue for ensuring that Nine endures as a relevant and essential institution in our community. I wish you and your families a happy holiday season and a brighter new year! Thank you.

Filmed outdoors in the stark solitude and emptiness of the Public Media Commons at night without an audience, Songs for St. Louis: A Concert in the Commons is a reminder of the uncommon times that we are living through, but also that art endures.
Produced by Nine in early October, three bright, young operatic singers came together to share the joy of making music. The result is Songs for St. Louis: A Concert in the Commons, which premieres on Nine PBS Monday, November 16 at 7 pm. A collaboration between Nine and Opera Theatre of Saint Louis (OTSL), the production captures the beauty of the human voice and reminds us of the power of music to inspire and bring us together, says Andrew Jorgensen, General Director, OTSL. “It is the perfect collaboration for us to be able to come together to celebrate our work and to share the adaptation, power, and persistence of music even during incredibly challenging times. “Never have we been more grateful to be part of the St. Louis community or more mindful of projects that celebrate the bold voices of the artists in our community and our responsibility to use art as a pathway to empathy, connection, and dialog,” he says. Inspired by the times, OTSL redirected the funds raised for its cancelled 2020 gala to create the Voices Fund: A Path for Empathy, Dialogue, and Change. The fund is earmarked for innovative projects in the community and developing new talent. The first project of the Voices Fund is the Song for St. Louis concert. 4

“We are so grateful to be in partnership with Nine Network, which offers us an incredible platform to be able to reach more broadly into our community than we are sometimes able to do. It’s so powerful to be able to share our music and this message of hope in this way,” says Jorgensen. The songs performed range from great opera classics to American musical theater. It is an eclectic, but also accessible, set of music and includes pieces composed by Mozart, Puccini, Gershwin, Bernstein, and arias from La bohème, Rigoletto, Camelot, South Pacific, and West Side Story. “It’s our way of saying thank you and sharing...a little bit of music at a time when, I think, many of us have never needed the beauty of music and the power of art more,” says Jorgensen. People sometimes associate opera with elitism, says Jorgensen, but that has never been the spirit of Opera Theatre nor is the Public Media Commons a grand concert hall. The three young artists performing will not be wearing costumes or ball gowns. “These are brilliant young artists sharing their art despite the conditions in the world,” he says.

The three artists are part of OTSL’s 2020 Gerdine Young Artist Program. It is a training program which brings artists fresh from conservatory to St. Louis and is the first step in their professional journey. Patricia Racette, a distinguished soprano herself and curator of Songs for St. Louis, is the artistic director of the Young Artist Programs. She scours the country looking for the brightest lights in the operatic field.
OTSL had to cancel its 2020 season, but it was able to execute a digital festival season. With the support of its board of directors, donors, and audiences, it was able to honor 50 percent of each of its 380 festival season contracts, which included artists, artisans, production crew, and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.
The artists on the rise include Angel Riley, an emerging soprano, who hails from Belleville, IL (and is a graduate of OTSL’s Bayer Fund Artistsin-Training Program), Ganson Salmon, a lyric tenor, and Christopher Humbert, Jr., a bassbaritone.
Opera Theatre also hosted Arts United, a virtual benefit, which brought together more than 15 St. Louis organizations to raise money for St. Louis artists who were out of work because of the pandemic. "It’s devastating that we aren’t able to come together in person, but I am also inspired and optimistic that we are still making art,” says Jorgensen.
Because we can’t come together for the thrill of a live performance, “there is really something special about seeing these bright singers, who show us that there will be a future of art. These three singers coming together to share the joy of music-making...is a very hopeful thing.”
OTSL is planning a year full of digital activities in 2021. It is turning its rehearsal center into a film studio to capture and release some performances in the winter months before moving in to their open-air 2021 Festival Season. “These times are challenging, but we are undaunted,” he says.

new on nine The Forces Controlling the Energy Industry A quest to find out where energy comes from, who controls it, and how it is sourced.
In 2015, Jonathan Scott decided to power his Las Vegas home with solar to reduce his carbon footprint and explore ways that solar energy could help clients in his home-renovation work. His experiences revealed a system that seemed broken, and the process sparked a three-year journey of frustrating interactions with utility companies, government officials, and confusing legislation.
Property Brothers’ cohost and homerenovation expert Jonathan Scott (seen below and at top right) is on a mission to flip the switch on how Americans access power. On the surface, solar energy seems like a resource that is widely available; however as Scott begins his journey across the country, he quickly finds how little choice the public has in how they source their energy.
Like Scott, many Americans have turned to solar in recent years to generate their own environmentally friendly source of power and to cut costs. Jonathan Scott’s Power Trip chronicles Scott’s quest to gain a deeper understanding of this issue and raises important questions like where our energy comes from, who controls it, and how it is sourced.
Scott’s directorial debut Jonathan Scott’s Power Trip premieres on Independent Lens on Monday, November 16 at 10:00 pm, livestreaming the night of the premiere, and on-demand at ninenet.org and the PBS Video App after broadcast.
Viewers accompany Scott as he travels the country, interviewing key figures across the energy landscape. Featuring interviews with a host of experts such as Bernie Sanders, Al Gore, Tea Party cofounder Debbie Dooley, environmentalists, farmers, coal miners, and solar panel installers, Jonathan Scott’s Power Trip highlights an issue that impacts everyone. “I was shocked to find that there’s a silent war being waged against everyday people who are trying to have a say in where their power comes from,” Scott says. “It’s not about politics; it’s about the truth. My hope with this film is that it will challenge how we think about energy not only in the U.S., but on a global scale, and motivate people to call for meaningful changes to the way our power is sourced and controlled.”

nine networking New Donnybrook Next Up Donnybrook Next Up officially replaces Donnybrook...Your Turn on November 5 at 7:30 pm. Donnybrook Next Up interviews regional experts for a local perspective on the news.
Nine continues to grow and adapt because of the pandemic. We began producing Donnybrook via Zoom in March because of the health and safety concerns about the coronavirus on the Donnybrook cast and crew. Technical limitations prevented us from producing Donnybrook...Your Turn outside of the studio.

In mid-April, we added a new second half hour of in-depth discussion featuring an invited guest with expertise on a current event. The positive feedback we received from viewers indicated that this program format was something we should keep. Donnybrook Next Up brings you conversations on the important news of the day, continuing what we started in April. Noteworthy guests of the 7:30 pm program have included Jason Purnell, VP of Community Health Improvement, BJC Healthcare, St. Charles County Executive Steve Ehlmann, Missouri’s Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Commissioner Margie Vandeven, entrepreneur Jim McKelvey, Mike McMillan, President and CEO, Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, and legendary broadcaster Mike Shannon. Donnybrook will continue to be produced on Zoom for the foreseeable future. We hope both programs will return to the studio sometime in 2021. You can watch or listen to full episodes of Donnybrook and the new Donnybrook Next Up on ninenet.org, Nine’s YouTube channel, and on the Donnybrook podcast. Premieres Thursday, November 5 at 7:30 pm
