The USS St. Louis: Centuries of Service screening on September 21, included friends, from left: Frances Levine, president and CEO, Missouri Historical Society; Amy Shaw, president and CEO, and Kara Vaninger, producer, from Nine PBS; Honorable Charles A. Williams, former Assistant Secretary of the Navy; Paul Stillwell, author and historian; and Mark Sundlov, Soldiers Memorial Director, Missouri Historical Society.
Dear Friends, I have been buoyed by our team’s ability to work outside of the studio walls to serve our community while enduring the stresses of living through a pandemic. In a challenging year, we have continued to produce top-quality work, resulting in four Mid-America Emmy® Award nominations for work produced in 2020. The year has been momentous to say the least. We successfully reintroduced ourselves as Nine PBS, even showing up on monitors in St. Louis Lambert International Airport. We added seasons of members’ favorite cooking and traveling shows to the PBS Video App. We engaged learners and communities through virtual discussions and highquality resources. We also received the distinction of being a top place for women to work. We told stories that move us. We have reopened our building to staff. Our team’s commitment to the community is exemplified by our designation as a gold-level vaccination organization by the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry this summer; 100% of our team is vaccinated! Nine PBS follows the latest health advisories on COVID-19 to keep those we serve safe.
On a personal note, I know change is a constant, but saying goodbye to Richard (Dick) Skalski, Nine PBS’s senior vice president, chief financial and operations officer, is bittersweet. Dick announced his retirement effective September 14. Dick has been instrumental in day-today operations and ensuring Nine PBS’s financial health for 21 years. His talents and good nature will be missed by our whole team. Thank you to the Community of Supporters you see listed in this issue for ensuring that Nine PBS endures as an essential community institution. Because of our supporters, friends, foundations, and corporate sponsors, we continue to serve you and the region in ways no one else can. Warmest wishes for a happy holiday season!

The Rockies: Where Legends Are Born
New Nature Podcast
As issues of conservation and climate change become increasingly important, the iconic Nature series continues to educate and enlighten us. A new, two-part series, Nature: Born in the Rockies, follows the lives of several Rocky Mountain animal families as they find a home and raise their young. From infancy to independence, it unravels the story of the Rockies through the eyes of those born there.
If you’ve tuned into PBS’s Nature series over its 40 years on air, you know that it tells incredible stories of the natural world’s diversity and quirks. From bees to bears, the show has explored every corner of the amazing lives of animals.
The Rocky Mountains are the second largest mountain range on Earth—3,000 miles long. This formidable chain of mountains encompasses a hundred separate ranges from its southernmost point in the American Southwest, to its northern tip in the Canadian Arctic. And because of this, the Rockies encapsulate an astounding array of ecosystems, from prairie to Alpine tundra. Many of North America’s greatest rivers originate in the Rockies, providing life-giving water to arid land and fresh drinking water to millions of homes. An ever-expanding human population is placing increased pressure on wilderness, making the Rockies one of the last refuges for North America’s most iconic species, including Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, Greater Sandhill cranes, grizzly bears, and American bison
Nature’s new podcast, Going Wild with Dr. Rae Wynn-Grant, continues its long history of exploring the natural world and examining its sometimes-painful interactions with humanity, through eight episodes. Journey deep into the heart of the world’s most remote jungles, savannas, tundras, mountains, and deserts with wildlife biologist Dr. Rae Wynn-Grant as she studies wild animals in their natural habitats.
Born in the Rockies Episodes First Steps Wednesday, November 10, 7 pm From early spring to late summer, follow new animal mothers through the trials of raising a family in the Rocky Mountains. Cranes migrate north to give birth, a bison mother protects her lambs from threats, and young mountain goats learn to climb.
Growing Up Wednesday, November 17, 7 pm Young animals face new challenges as winter envelopes the Rocky Mountains, and spring means the end of childhood. A grizzly mom prepares her cubs for hibernation, a mountain lion raises her kittens, and a bison calf must learn to survive the snow.
G oing Wild is available free on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.

“Tom Jones is the mother of all romcoms and isn’t that just what we all need after the last couple of years of misery? ...Henry Fielding’s 18th century novel is sexy and fun; it’s also a dramatic rollercoaster, addressing so many modern concerns around consent, sexual equality, and the pursuit of happiness. Tom and Sophia overcome enormous obstacles before finding their way home and to each other. This is a classic adaptation with a wise soul and a great big smile on its face,” says Gwyneth Hughes, writer and executive producer.

An Animated Twist on a Christmas Classic Back in January 2008, Living St. Louis producer AnneMarie Berger took a peek inside the art studios of St. Louisan Mary Engelbreit.
action scene by scene, shot by shot. Animator Dan Beckmann had to get the unique patterns and textures of Engelbreit right.
An entrepreneur, artist, and author, Engelbreit was moving into the film world—working to produce a short animation of her 2002 book, The Night Before Christmas. But she didn’t have to fly to Hollywood to work with talented animators, she found them right in St. Louis. She chose Schwartz & Associates Creative to bring life to her drawings.
Engelbreit's drawings were used as a reference to build models. To get them to move, Dan created wire frames to act as a structure. He often acted out the roles to get the expressions exactly right, to see how cheeks move, for instance.
They took the original poem, with the same characters, and added their own fairy tale, including a magical spell and a hero, Gregory the Mouse, who saves Christmas. Three-dimensional animation involved a lot more work than Engelbreit anticipated. “You have to draw the characters from all sides,” she said, and think about clothing details, the way the characters move their hands and heads, and their voices. They had to look at the characters in a new way. The software was high-tech, but the story was produced the old-fashioned way, using paper and pencil. The filmmakers had to create a storyboard, depicting each
" You have to draw the characters from all sides."
Academy Award and Tony Award winner, Kevin Klein, a St. Louis native, was enlisted to portray the voice of Papa. In a twist, Engelbreit worked briefly at a retail store in St. Louis owned by Kevin’s dad. Engelbreit illustrates things from everyday life and has even used gun violence, women rights, and voting rights as subjects. Her artwork appears on a wide range of products including calendars, T-shirts, mugs, gift books, rubber stamps, ceramic figurines, fabric, and a list that's grown to include nearly 6,500 products over the years, with more than $1 billion in lifetime retail sales, according to her website.

The Oratorio: A Documentary with Martin Scorsese The documentary explores the richness of the immigrant experience, the beginning of a cultural awakening in the U.S., and the enduring power of art through the fascinating story of a one-night-only performance in 1826 at St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral—Scorsese’s home church in Little Italy—that marked the arrival of Italian opera in the New World.

October 3 through January 9, 2022 In conjunction with the 200th anniversary of Missouri’s statehood, Art Along the Rivers: A Bicentennial Celebration explores the remarkable artwork produced and collected over 1,000 years in the region surrounding St. Louis. Marvel at more than 150 works of art that tell the story of this region’s role in the history of North America due to the confluence of powerful rivers. This exhibition is organized by the Saint Louis Art Museum. Its presentation is generously supported by the William T. Kemper Foundation. Additional support is provided by the Edward L. Bakewell Jr. Endowment for Special Exhibitions and the Trio Foundation of St. Louis. Precariously positioned between major waterways, rivers, and the Atlantic Ocean, Charleston, SC, is susceptible to flooding from major storms and even the daily shifting of the tides. This reality complicates everything for businesses and the city’s residents, especially those living in poor, historically black neighborhoods.
