Dear Friends, I’m pleased to announce that PBS received more nominations (12) and more wins (six) than any other media organization at the annual Peabody Awards. These awards affirm that public television holds a singular place in the media landscape, sharing stories that reflect the pressing social issues and vibrant voices of our day. Frontline and PBS NewsHour both received multiple news awards. The series Asian Americans won in the documentary category. PBS NewsHour received the only Peabody for news coverage of COVID-19, described by the jurors as “the best news coverage of a once-in-a-century global pandemic.” In addition, we are thrilled that Judy Woodruff received the firstever Peabody Award for Journalistic Integrity. Our local content continues to inspire me, too, and I hope you are moved as well. Premiering in September, USS St. Louis: Centuries of Service was produced by Nine PBS in partnership with Soldiers Memorial Military Museum and the Missouri Historical Society. It’s a story about service, commitment, and how St. Louis’s history has had an

impact on our nation. It also celebrates St. Louis: from those interviewed to the Saint Louis Council of the Navy League of the U.S., which assisted the ship’s Commissioning Committee. And it’s also a terrific opportunity to inspire area students to consider careers in engineering, science, and technology. The documentary was produced during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to digital technology and communications, it was largely produced from producer Kara Vaninger’s dining room table (with her cats as unpaid production assistants). Members of our team who have been working remotely will return to our building in late fall, with flexibility built in, to continue bringing you the programs, specials, events, conversations, and resources you have come to expect from us.

A Wave of Civic Pride

The crew of the USS St. Louis got to know the fun side of St. Louis by throwing out the first pitch at a St. Louis Cardinals’ game.

USS St. Louis: Centuries of Service recounts the proud lineage of ships named USS St. Louis in the United States military since the founding of our country, but it’s the one out at sea now that is instilling a big wave of civic pride. “It’s connecting a landlocked city to a navy ship and the crew that sails upon her,” says Nine PBS’s Kara Vaninger, producer and writer. The Nine PBS documentary USS St. Louis: Centuries of Service, a partnership with Soldiers Memorial Military Museum and the Missouri Historical Society, recounts each ship’s rich and surprising history and follows the current USS St. Louis as she and her crew experience the naval traditions and milestones that take a ship from concept to active service in the U.S. Navy. The film includes the dramatic side launch of the 3,500-ton ship during its August 8, 2020,

commissioning ceremony in Mayport, FL, and footage at the U.S. Navy Memorial, the Naval History and Heritage Command headquarters, both in Washington, DC, and the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. “It is not literally true that a ship is an inanimate object. Those of us who have served in war ships believe that they have a soul, so we have a hard time thinking of war ships as just pieces of steel,” says Paul Stillwell, a historian and retired naval officer who hails from Springfield, MO. While the ship was still being built, members of the crew were invited to St. Louis several times to meet with the Commissioning Committee, engage in educational and community outreach, and attend the unveiling of the ship’s crest. The committee also made sure the crew got to know the fun side of St. Louis: visiting Ted Drewes, throwing out the

first pitch at a St. Louis Cardinals’ game, and taking a photo with the Stanley Cup. The Commissioning Committee worked with the Navy League of the U.S., Saint Louis Council. The Saint Louis Council provides programs for the Reserve Officers' Training Corp (ROTC) and connects area students to careers in engineering, science, and technology. “It’s incredibly important that the people in St. Louis know about what those men and women are doing when they go to sea. ...It’s a civics lesson and a national security lesson,” says Frank Thorp IV, president and CEO, U.S. Navy Memorial.

An Illustrious History The USS LCS-19 is a littoral combat ship. A highly automated ship, with a crew of 40 to 50, it seeks out and destroys underwater mines close to shore. It is equipped with guns, helicopters, and drones for offensive combat. Its current location is unknown for security reasons, but it started its life in a Wisconsin shipyard. The legacy of U.S. Navy ships named St. Louis goes back almost as far as our country does. The first one was commissioned in 1828 and saw almost eight decades of action: from fighting pirates in the Caribbean to serving the Union in the Civil War. At the core of the documentary is the World War II-era USS St. Louis, one of the most decorated U.S. Navy ships of all time. Based in Pearl Harbor, the combat ship attacked three enemy planes and was the only major ship to make it out of the harbor during the attack with zero casualties. It earned 11 battle stars throughout the war, thus earning the name “Lucky Lou.” It was eventually decommissioned and transferred to the Brazilian Navy in 1951. Its steering wheel was presented to St. Louisan Nancy Smith, the ship’s sponsor. The wheel can now be seen in the Soldiers Military Museum. The documentary features reunion footage and interviews with Lucky Lou veterans.

A Lifetime Commitment St. Louisan Barbara Broadhurst Taylor, the current ship's sponsor and its guiding star, organized and directed the Commissioning Committee. She proudly grew up in a military family (her father was an Air Force general). She presented the Lucky Lou’s battle-scarred flag from Pearl Harbor, folded in a glass box, to the crew after the commissioning.

"To witness the skill and commitment of the officers and crew of USS St. Louis as they brought our magnificent ship to life has been one of the greatest honors of my life.”

She offered congratulations to everyone who played a role in delivering the USS St. Louis to service at the commissioning ceremony. "To witness the skill and commitment of the officers and crew of USS St. Louis as they brought our magnificent ship to life has been one of the greatest honors of my life. All of us in the great city of St. Louis are proud to be part of our ship's historic legacy and extend our appreciation and lasting friendship to the crew and their families," she said in a U.S. Department of Defense press release.

The Commissioning Committee established a $500,000 scholarship fund that will award annual grants to qualifying members of the crew and their dependents who are pursuing undergraduate degrees or advanced technical training administered through the Scholarship Foundation of St. Louis. T he

New Season of Food Is Love Season two of Food Is Love premieres October 4 at 7:30 pm on Nine PBS. Chef Lasse Sorensen continues his quest to dig deep into the stories that make St. Louis one of the fastest growing and most dynamic food scenes in the country. Chef Lasse has learned that some of the most interesting narratives can be found in the kitchen. “You can walk into any restaurant in this city and find a good story. That guy standing there in the kitchen prepping for the dinner rush, if you can get him to talk, I’d bet he can tell you some interesting stuff.” In episode one, Lasse learns the story of orphaned immigrant Tony Pietoso, owner of Cafe Napoli in Clayton. From lessons in linguine and linguistics to learning hospitality from the king of Clayton himself, Lasse gains a deeper respect for the landmark restaurant and the family that runs it. Other highlights in season two include exploring Chinese, Japanese, and Malaysian food.

Season two of Food Is Love takes the viewer deeper into the food scene and into more of the kitchens that put St. Louis on the map.

Create Your Legacy According to a 2020 survey carried out by caring.com, only 42 percent of U.S. adults currently have estate planning documents, such as a will or living trust, meaning over half do not have any guidance recorded for how they would like their affairs to be handled in the event of their death. In 2008, Congress passed a resolution proclaiming the third week in October (October 18–24, 2021) National Estate Planning Awareness Week to promote the importance of having an estate plan in place.

East St. Louis Olympian Known as

GREATEST FEMALE ALL-AROUND ATHLETE While Muhammad Ali is known as one of the greatest boxers in history, one of the greatest female all-around athletes in history—Jackie Joyner-Kersee—calls this region home. Named the Greatest Female Athlete of the 20th Century by Sports Illustrated, Jackie JoynerKersee was the first woman to win back-to-back Olympic gold medals in the heptathlon. Joyner went on to win six Olympic medals (three gold) in four Olympics. What’s a heptathlon, you ask? It's a track and field event in which each competitor takes part in the same seven events (100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200-meter dash, long jump, javelin, and 800-meter run). She holds the heptathlon world record (7,291 points) set during her gold-medal win at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. Executive Producer Jim Kirchherr profiled Joyner in a February 2008 edition of Living St. Louis. She was born in 1962 in East St. Louis, IL, on 15th Street and Piggott Avenue, at a time when the city was losing population, industry, and businesses. The Mary Brown Community Center provided a space where Joyner could explore new interests. (The original center no longer exists; the Lessie Bates Davis C heck

Neighborhood House now serves the community.) The people at the center became like an extended family, she says. There, as a 10-year-old, she was exposed to books, arts and crafts, dance, and most prophetically, a track program. She excelled at sports at East St. Louis’s Lincoln High School. The then-St. Louis Globe Democrat named her “Girl Athlete of the Year” three years in a row. After graduation in 1980, and thanks to Title IX, she received a full scholarship to UCLA to play basketball, where she also ran track. She knew wherever her successes took her, she would always find her way back home. She held up an “I love you East St. Louis” sign at an Olympics’ closing ceremony. Her passion has always been supporting, mentoring, and inspiring kids. She created the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation to help in-need kids succeed in academics and athletics and to become leaders. In 1998, she broke ground on the six-million-dollar Jackie Joyner Kersee Youth Center, located in her childhood neighborhood. She graciously said it was “a debt repaid.”

“It’s not the crime, it’s the cover-up” goes the old saying. But that didn’t stop brothers Max and Jake from hiding their guilt after running into an elderly pedestrian during an inebriated drive home from a wedding. Mark Bonnar (Unforgotten) and Jamie Sives (To the Ends of the Earth) star in this darkly absorbing tale of rascality and deceit. This four-part series airs with backto-back episodes.

Escape to the Chateau

A five-part series from PBS NewsHour takes an extensive look at the U.S.'s childcare crisis. The struggle to find affordable, quality childcare has always been one of the biggest issues for American families, and COVID-19 only exacerbated the problem. The series examines the current state of the American childcare system, its history, and the new movement for long-term reform in the post-COVID era.

From the citizen-soldiers who fought in the nation’s earliest conflicts, to the men and women in today’s all-volunteer armed forces, the series is told through personal remembrances that draw civilian viewers into an unfamiliar culture. Their stories contribute to our evolving understanding of the relationship between Americans who have served and those who have not.
