I enjoy America’s Test Kitchen, Antiques Roadshow, Downton Abbey, and Call the Midwife. There is nothing more soothing than the Joy of Painting with Bob Ross. Briefly, what is your responsibility at Nine PBS? I ensure that we remain financially healthy and responsible. It is important that we are good stewards of our donors’ funds. What do you enjoy doing when you're not at work? I enjoy watching my three children play softball, basketball, soccer, and baseball. Dear Friends, The programs on Nine PBS invite you to learn, yes, but also to belong, and feel good in a world that sometimes doesn’t feel particularly good. I hope that Nine PBS is the place where you come for inspiration, comfort, and content you can trust. This past year was pivotal; we rebranded to Nine PBS and listened to our community’s priorities to tell stories that moved us. The Living St. Louis producing team was named one of the St. Louis Press Club’s 2021 "Media Persons of the Year.” We received the 2021 Bank of America Neighborhood Builders® Award for our work addressing early childhood learning in the community. We were named one of St. Louis’s best places to work for women by the Women’s Foundation of Greater St. Louis. We are always humbled by the love you show us and our community, including all the letters, stories, and contributions on Giving Tuesday. Thank you for your generosity. And we won’t rest on our laurels, 2022 will also be a big year! For the first six months of the year, we’ll be working on a new strategic plan to anchor our direction. And we have a couple of big projects you’ll be hearing more about soon!
In addition to our local specials and our work in the community, we’ll bring you more of the comforting and inspiring content that you know and love. There are now more ways to watch Nine PBS than ever. Nine PBS and PBS KIDS® are now live streaming on DirecTV Stream as well as YouTube TV. PBS's streaming partnerships continue to expand our digital footprint and offer viewers additional ways to stream our content. And don’t forget the PBS Video App allows you to stream your favorite PBS shows, including Nine PBS series and specials, and create the perfect watchlist. Your support sustains Nine PBS for future generations. Nine PBS was the first public television station licensed to the community. This history lives on in our work today: strengthening civic life through programs and services that reflect the people of our region. From our Nine PBS family to yours, have a joyful new year.

Just What the
Veterinarian Ordered
The series was one of PBS’s biggest hits of 2021, delighting television viewers exhausted by lockdown and ongoing political crises.
Beloved country vet James Herriot returns for a new season of All Creatures Great and Small on Masterpiece. Described as “charming…ravishing (and) transportive” by the New York Times, All Creatures Great and Small returns for a second season of heartwarming and humorous stories based on James Herriot’s beloved bestselling novels about a young vet and his surrogate family in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales of the 1930s. With an acclaimed ensemble cast headed by Nicholas Ralph as James Herriot, the seven new episodes will air on Nine PBS on Sunday nights, beginning January 9 at 8 pm.

The premiere season of All Creatures Great and Small was one of PBS’s biggest hits of 2021, delighting television viewers exhausted by lockdown and ongoing political crises. Critics were equally enthralled by the show, with Vogue rhapsodizing “A visit to the fields, farms, and pubs of the faraway English countryside feels…like just what the doctor ordered,” while New York Magazine proclaimed, “every tiny piece of it is absolutely perfect.” “People helping animals, people quietly falling in love, people romping through the green dales, people valuing honor…it’s all lovely and comforting,” concurred the Boston Globe. The climax of season one saw Helen call off her impending wedding to wealthy landowner Hugh,
F E AT U R E
having developed a close friendship with James over the course of the first season. After working hard to become accepted by the local farmers and prove himself indispensable, Siegfried made James a senior vet in the Skeldale House veterinary practice. Following years of halfhearted effort, Tristan believed he had finally passed his veterinary exams. Siegfried, however, learned that Tristan failed once again, but didn’t have the heart to tell him. Meanwhile, Mrs. Hall was heartbroken when she was unable to reconnect with her estranged son. As season two opens, James returns from Glasgow where he has been visiting his parents for Easter. While there he is offered a job at a modern local veterinary practice and must decide between staying home in Glasgow with his elderly parents or returning to his new life in Yorkshire. Nicholas Ralph (The Most Reluctant Convert) returns as James Herriot, a young vet from Scotland who moves to Yorkshire to take a job in a local veterinary practice in the farming town of Darrowby. The cast also features Samuel West (Howards End) as James’s charismatic but eccentric boss, Siegfried Farnon; Callum Woodhouse (The Durrells in Corfu) as Siegfried’s womanizing and carefree younger brother, Tristan; Anna Madeley (Patrick Melrose) as Mrs. Hall the wise and compassionate housekeeper who becomes a surrogate mother to the three men in her charge; and Rachel Shenton (Academy Award® winner for The Silent Child) as the independentminded and alluring farmer Helen Alderson who becomes the focus of James’ attention.
Around the World in 80 Days Literature’s most famous race against the calendar is coming to Masterpiece with an innovative, new, eight-episode adaptation of Jules Verne’s classic novel, "Around the World in 80 Days." In Verne’s 1872 story, wealthy Victorian eccentric Phileas Fogg wagers he can circumnavigate the world in 80 days. Fogg is accompanied on the daunting journey by his quick-thinking French valet, Passepartout. Along the way, the two are thwarted by a Scotland Yard detective, Abigail “Fix” Fortescue, who believes Fogg has robbed the Bank of England. The new adaptation transports the character of Fix from a male antagonist into a pioneering female journalist who accompanies them on the trip. A mustachioed David Tennant (Doctor Who, Broadchurch, Good Omens) leads this cast as the affluent and not-necessarily intrepid Phileas Fogg. Filming across several countries during a worldwide pandemic was a challenge. After shooting just the first episode in early 2020, cast and crew were forced to take almost a year-long hiatus. In the end, the shoot was spread across studios and onsite locations in South Africa and Romania over a five-month period.

HAPPENING NOW
Donnybrook Gets a New Set! On November 11, 2021, the Donnybrook panelists walked onto a brand-new set. Updating the set has been broached periodically, yet remained a controversial topic. The same, comfortable, den-like set has been used throughout the show’s 35year history, save for the temporary set used for the 1987 debut. How could we honor those who have sat around the Donnybrook table for three and half decades and maintain it as a sacred space of “polite conversations,” while at the same time modernize it? The pandemic made the answers to those questions easier. The show continued seamlessly on Zoom during the COVID-19 lockdown. Because most of us had more free time during the lockdown, home renovations took off, and so did the idea of bringing the debaters back to a refreshed set. After supply chain delays and with the full support of Alvin, Charlie, Ray, Wendy, and Bill, the set was a go after a brief temporary setup in an adjacent studio at Nine PBS. The new, yet familiar, set features a table and chairs donated by Carol House Furniture, navy board and batten wainscoting on the walls, engineered wood flooring, and new artwork over the mantel.
6
Nine PBS Magazine | JAN–FEB 2022
Artist Laura Genovese provided the abstract artwork over the fireplace. The possibility of rotating artwork by local artists is being considered. For the purists, the set preserves the brick walls and treasured photographs of founder Martin Dugan and his wife, May, original debater Rich Koster, guest panelist Nan Wyatt, and local sports heroes Ozzie Smith and Bernie Federko. The response to the new set has been positive, says Anne-Marie Berger, executive producer of Donnybrook and senior director of content at Nine PBS. She wrote a blog post about the new set, which includes old photos, at ninepbs.org/donnybrookset. “Being back in studio has breathed new life back into us,” she says. “We are happy doing Donnybrook the way it should be done.” Watch
Donnybrook/Donnybrook Next Up live on Thursdays at 7 pm/7:30 pm. Encore broadcasts of Donnybrook are on Fridays at 7:30 pm, on YouTube, and the PBS Video App.

Living St. Louis Team Honored by St. Louis Press Club The St. Louis Press Club announced its list of local news types who have been named the 2021 "Media Persons of the Year." It includes a familiar group of broadcast journalists: the Living St. Louis team from Nine PBS. Accolades went to Jim Kirchherr, executive producer, and producers Anne-Marie Berger, Ruth Ezell, Brooke Butler, and Kara Vaninger for telling important stories about our diverse community. Living St. Louis has been on the air since 2004; episodes air Monday nights at 7 pm.
From the Archives Our reader-favorite feature continues with Nine PBS Specials you might have missed, including a timely one about the St. Louis University soccer dynasty— A Time for Champions. While the 2021 team lost the December 4 NCAA Tournament quarterfinal soccer game against Washington, they finished the season 16-1-4 after building the longest unbeaten streak within a season in program history, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. This 2010 Nine documentary (with a new introduction from Jim Kirchherr) tells the story of how soccer became more than a game as generations of young St. Louisans battled for neighborhood, church, and city. It relives the St. Louis University soccer dynasty, which won their first National Championship in 1959 (the year the NCAA sanctioned soccer as an official Division I sport), and would win 10 more over the next 15 years.

PBS Favorites on DirecTV Stream Nine PBS is now live streaming on DirecTV Stream. Relationships like this one ensure that on-demand content from PBS favorites, including American Experience, Antiques Roadshow, Frontline, Great Performances, Masterpiece, and Nature, are available to as many viewers as possible. The PBS KIDS channel is also on both the DirecTV Stream and DirecTV lineups, helping to extend the PBS mission of preparing young children for success in school and life through trusted, educational media, available anytime and anywhere.

Nine PBS isn’t just the place for dramas, local stories about cultural assets and treasures, or educational programs. We are in the community, too, leading initiatives with networks of trusted partners to improve early learning.
Edcamp 2021 On October 16, 2021, Nine PBS welcomed back educators and caregivers for our first in-person Edcamp in two years. Due to COVID-19, we limited registrations, engaging a tightknit group of 68 educators, administrators, and partners from across the St. Louis region and impacting 1,700 children, aged 0–8. Participating school districts included East St. Louis 189, Rockwood, St. Louis Public Schools, Hazelwood, Northwest, and Special School District, as well as many private and informal early education centers.

Bank of America’s Neighborhood Builders When Nine PBS began developing what would become Teaching in Room 9, Bank of America was one of our first supporters. Now, their national foundation has chosen Nine PBS as one of two organizations in St. Louis to be a part of their Neighborhood Builders® program to support the continued success of Teaching in Room 9. This two-year program provides operational support and leadership training, as well as access to a network of peer organizations across the U.S. This opportunity is the nation’s largest investment into nonprofit leadership development.

The Black Church: This Is Our Story, This Is Our Song A Sunday afternoon encore of this twopart special from Henry Louis Gates, Jr., traces the 400-year-old story of the Black church in America. It reveals how Black people have worshipped and, through their spiritual journeys, improvised ways to bring their faith traditions from Africa to the New World, while translating them into a form of Christianity that was truly their own.

Fannie Lou Hamer's America: An America Reframed Special The documentary film is told through the public speeches, personal interviews, and powerful songs of the fearless Mississippi sharecropper-turned-human-rightsactivist.
