Ridley Road on Masterpiece Sunday, May 1, 8 pm
Inspired by true events, Ridley Road tells the story of Vivien Epstein, a young Jewish woman who, after falling in love with a member of the "62 Group," rejects her comfortable middle-class life in Manchester and joins the fight against fascism in London.
Team Member Spotlight Ernmardia Crowder Member and Viewer Relations Coordinator t Nine PBS: 5½ years A What show(s) on Nine PBS are you watching or recommending? I’ve told everyone I know about Miss Scarlet and the Duke on Masterpiece! It’s got everything you want: mystery, action, adventure, and a little will they/won’t they sprinkled in there, too! Briefly, what is your responsibility at Nine PBS? I communicate with our passionate Nine PBS audience, assisting them with their memberships, programming questions, and making sure that they receive their thank-you gifts on time. You can also find me on your TV screens during our membership drives. What do you enjoy doing when you're not at work? Reading (I’m currently racing to reach my goal of 35 books this year), taking a leisurely stroll in Lafayette Park, and hunting for the best brunch spot in St. Louis…scratch that, the world, because I love to travel, too!

Dear Friends, Did you know that Nine PBS is one of the strongest public media organizations in the country? One of the reasons we are so well-respected by our peers is the success we have had with our nationally recognized model of community engagement. A perfect example of this model at work is our new kids’ initiative, Drawn In. To close the well-documented literacy gap and positively represent black and brown children in our community, we’ve teamed with local Academy Award-winning producers, Lion Forge Animation, to create an animated series informed by our work in the St. Louis region. This is the start of something BIG! You’ll hear much more about this exciting new initiative in the weeks and months to come. To support learners, their families, and educators in meaningful ways, our flagship series, Living St. Louis, explores the issues of mental health and children in a new special you’ll want to watch. We’ve never lived through times like these. Children, especially, have dealt with extraordinary issues over these last two years.
Speaking of local content, did you know that the success of professional wrestling is rooted in St. Louis? We bring you Head over Heels: Remembering Wrestling at the Chase, a documentary that relives the antics of one of St. Louis’s most popular and longest-running local programs. With colorful stars like Dick the Bruiser, King Kong Brody, Cowboy Bob Orton, Ted DiBiase, Wrestling at the Chase established St. Louis as a heavyweight in the national wrestling arena. Our work is made possible because of you! I hope you’ll support us on Give STL Day, May 5, with a gift of $60 or more, which comes with a one-year membership and access to Nine PBS Passport, an on-demand library of quality public television programs.

The Ultimate
High/Low Experience
A sell-out crowd at Kiel Auditorium in 1949 before wrestling moved to the Chase Park Plaza Hotel.
Head over Heels: Remembering Wrestling at the Chase takes a deep dive from the top of the ropes to explore how the unlikely merger of an elegant ballroom and beefy athletes made for unbeatable television on an emerging network and put St. Louis at the center of the national wrestling scene. It’s been almost 40 years since Wrestling at the Chase aired, but there is no shortage of fond memories. Head over Heels: Remembering Wrestling at the Chase weaves together stories from fans and former wrestlers and their families, with the history of our city, to tell the larger tale of not only a beloved show, but also of an unstoppable promoter, an iconic hotel, and a visionary TV man—and how they all worked together to establish St. Louis as a heavyweight in the national wrestling arena.

Nine PBS Magazine | MAY–JUN 2022
Wrestling at the Chase was one of St. Louis’ most popular and longest-running local programs. From 1959 to 1983, professional wrestling’s colorful stars took to the ring before cheering and booing crowds. KPLR-TV in St. Louis broadcast the matches, with Joe Garagiola doing the early ringside announcing duties. For St. Louis families, the Saturday night live broadcasts and Sunday morning repeats became must-see TV. It also helped make St. Louis one of the premiere cities for this unique brand of over-the-top entertainment. From Dick the Bruiser to Penny Banner to Ric Flair to King Kong Brody and many others, the film profiles some of the most loved/hated/famous contenders to take the ring at the Chase.
A Chance Encounter What started out as a chance conversation on an airplane—Sam Muchnick had wrestlers and a ring; Harold Koplar had a hotel ballroom and a brandnew TV station—turned into a match made in wrestling heaven. Thanks to Ukrainian-born wrestling promoter Sam Muchnick’s unusual mix of business savvy and integrity, St. Louis became the capital of professional wrestling and a coveted stop for performers on the circuit. Developer Sam Koplar’s iconic Chase Park Plaza Hotel became the place where presidents, royalty, and celebrities stayed, giving it a reputation for sophistication and luxury. Harold Koplar’s additions to his father’s already famous hotel included the glamorous Chase Club, Khorassan Ballroom, and Starlight Roof—where the hottest entertainers of the 1940s, ’50s, and ’60s came to play. But Harold (HK to his friends) was building something else, too: an independent VHF television station named KPLR. Although Sam Muchnick and others had been coordinating and promoting huge wrestling events at Kiel Auditorium, HK convinced him to look at the potential of television. Setting the staged, sweaty brawls in the beautiful Khorassan Ballroom at the Chase was the ultimate high/low experience for all involved. Live audiences who could afford a swanky night out sat just yards away from the action in their jewels and black ties, while viewers who tuned in to the new KPLR gathered with homemade snacks in their living rooms, feeling they were part of the glamour. Head over Heels: Remembering Wrestling at the Chase was produced by Nine PBS in collaboration with the author of Wrestling at the Chase, sports historian Ed Wheatley, who also produced the popular documentaries on the St. Louis Browns for Nine PBS.
Sam Muchnick’s early career in sports writing for the St. Louis Times in the 1920s ran parallel to the evolution of wrestling from a competitive sport to an athletic form of theater.
Rocky Johnson (father of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) was a Canadian wrestler whose many titles included the first black Georgia Heavyweight Champion and the NWA Television Champion.
W atch the membership special on Saturday, June 4, 8 pm, when themed thank-you gifts will be available. You can also livestream or watch on the PBS Video App after broadcast.

HAPPENING NOW
Living St. Louis Special: Kids, Families, and Mental Health One of the biggest consequences of the pandemic—struggles with staying mentally healthy—has been particularly acute for kids and educators. The LSL team looks at the soaring rates of anxiety, stress, and depression in educators and what resources are being deployed to help. The pressure to educate kids online or socially distanced and masked, while worrying about their own health and the safety of their loved ones, is driving burnout and resignations. We visit United 4 Children’s Social Emotional Early Childhood Project to uncover preventative strategies for those at-risk for social-emotional delays and ways for families to intervene if a child is exhibiting challenging behaviors. Finally, we look at anxiety and social development through the eyes of Easterseal’s Applied Behavioral Analysis program, which helps children with autism build social skills.
Mental Health Awareness Month Stress, burnout, anxiety, compassion fatigue? Chances are that you have felt a range of these symptoms over the course of the pandemic. Throughout May, Nine PBS’s Living St. Louis will share stories about methods for stress relief and ways to improve mental well-being. In partnership with Behavioral Health Response, Living St. Louis will also present expert guidance to support yourself and others in a crisis. Additionally, a two-part, four-hour film from Ken Burns’s team, Hiding in Plain Sight: Youth Mental Illness, follows the healing journeys of more than 20 young Americans who have struggled with thoughts and feelings that have troubled and, at times, overwhelmed them. Monday–Tuesday, June 27–28, 9 pm. Call
Behavioral Health Response at (314) 469-6644 or (800) 811-4760 for free and confidential telephone counseling.
W atch live Monday, May 23, 7 pm, or stream
on the PBS Video App.

HAPPENING NOW
Nine PBS Receives Multiple Honors We couldn’t be prouder of these recognitions of our team members’ work. Our own Amy Shaw, president and CEO, will be inducted into the St. Louis Media Hall of Fame during a ceremony on June 4. Amy was recognized for her significant and lasting contributions to local television. Congratulations to Nine PBS’s Ruth Ezell, senior producer, the recipient of the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis’s 2022 Outstanding Merit Award, celebrating her achievements and contributions in the field of journalism and communications. Nine PBS’s Teaching in Room 9 series was honored with a What’s Right with the Region Award from FOCUS St. Louis. The series was selected by a committee of local leaders for its impact and service to the community. It was recognized in the “Demonstrating Innovative Solutions” category for the innovative way it makes the St. Louis region a better place to live. When remote learning resources were needed for kids without adequate internet at the beginning of the pandemic in early 2020, Nine PBS created Teaching in Room 9. The series is now focused on increasing kindergarten readiness and airs weekdays beginning at 11:30 am. Funding for Teaching in Room 9 is provided by Bank of America, Berges Family Foundation, Boeing, Dana Brown Charitable Trust, Emerson, James S. McDonnell Family Foundation, Moneta, Pershing Charitable Trust. Teaching in Room 9 is made possible through partnerships with STEMpact and Saint Louis Art Museum.
Born in Guangzhou in Southern China, Chef Yan is a second generation "culinarian," who was first inspired by his mother in the tiny kitchen of their family restaurant.
May is Asian American Pacific Islander Month "Yan can cook, so can you!" has always been the motto of Martin Yan, chef extraordinaire and popular television host. Yan was a contemporary of Julia Child, and his show predated the Food Network by more than a decade. Yan Can Cook first launched in 1979 in Canada before moving to PBS in the U.S. in 1982. “I truly believe that, hopefully, what I have done in the last 43 years in public television, and all the appearances, the cookbooks and everything, all the travel—I hope I made a little dent in bringing awareness of Asian heritage, Asian culture, Asian food to the general public,” he told the online publication Next Shark in February 2022. You
can still watch Yan Can Cook: Spice Kingdom on Nine PBS Create. Nine PBS World will air a collection of programs throughout May related to the contributions of Asian Americans.

Against the backdrop of the civil rights movement, a young San Francisco Chinatown resident armed with a 16-mm camera and leftover film scraps from a local TV station, turned his lens onto his community. Harry Chuck's exquisite unreleased footage has captured a divided community's struggles for self-determination. Chinatown Rising is a film about the Asian-American movement from the perspective of the young residents on the front lines of their historic neighborhood in transition.
