Our Pioneer Spirit Award event was also the occasion for announcing the public phase of our $25 million Igniting the Spirit of Possibility campaign to build our capacity for the future. Our campaign chair and board secretary, Emerson Vice President Patrick Sly, announced a lead gift from Emerson in the amount of $1.5 million for a campaign total of $13,087,377 raised to date. This campaign milestone includes commitments from 100 percent of the Nine Network board and staff.

Our founders were imbued with a spirit of possibility that continues to inspire us today. That is why we recently honored our last living founder, Ray Wittcoff, with our first Pioneer Spirit Award. This special occasion was also an opportunity for us to pay tribute to those whose leadership and support have been essential to this organization’s history and who now help shape its future. We recognized the individuals, businesses and foundations whose lifetime cumulative gifts have exceeded $100,000 as charter members of the Visionary Leadership Circle of our Torchlight Society. We also recognized members of our Legacy Nine Society who have included the Nine Network in their estates. We even had the opportunity to welcome Dorothy Nelson, one of the mothers who went door-to-door in the 1950s collecting contributions to keep Nine on the air. A Campaign to Build Capacity for the Future

The history of the Nine Network of Public Media is a community story and a story of mutual commitment. Our founding purpose was to serve the people of the St. Louis region with opportunities for learning and civil discourse. And for nearly 60 years the St. Louis community has supported that value. We recently recognized our last living founder, Raymond H. Wittcoff, with the Pioneer Spirit Award, honoring him for qualities and principles that have endured at Nine and still guide us today. We also recognized individuals, businesses and foundations whose lifetime cumulative gifts have exceeded $100,000. These charter members of the Visionary Leadership Circle of our Torchlight Society have been significant to the history of the Nine Network. Over the years, as the community has changed, so have we. Utilizing every available resource and technology,

we have evolved into a multifaceted organization focused on showcasing and strengthening our community. We have developed partnerships that have made the Nine Network and the St. Louis community a national model for collaboration. We have been responsible stewards of the public trust. And, with the largest per capita viewership of any public television station in the country, we can attest to our region’s interest in what we provide. Now, we are on the brink of a new era. Vision

KETC/Channel 9 was conceived by the St. Louis community as an innovative means to provide public education and dialogue on topics that affected civic life. It was a concept that required the vision of St. Louis citizens who realized that television—a relatively new public medium—had the potential to strengthen civic life. Those visionary citizens also believed that television could be supported by the community in service to the community.

Spirit

In 1951, when St. Louis Mayor Joseph Darst appointed a committee that would become the St. Louis Regional Educational Television Commission, the population of the St. Louis metropolitan area was soaring and the economy was on the rise. Between 1950 and 1960 the population of St. Louis County would increase by 73 percent. By 1970 it would increase by an additional 35 percent. In the years following World War II the nation began to flourish in a spirit of optimism and growth that saw a progressive effect in business, education and culture. And St. Louis mirrored the nation. It was in this spirit that the founders of KETC/Channel 9 initiated educational television in St. Louis and sparked the development of educational television nationwide.

Among the influential founding members of the commission was Arthur Holly Compton, president of Washington University and a Nobel Prize-winning physicist. Also on the committee were the Rev. Paul C. Reinert, president of St. Louis University, Arthur B. Baer, president of Stix, Baer and Fuller, and Raymond H. Wittcoff, a promising young businessman. nineNet.org

Channel 9 was established as a community-licensed educational television station and received approval for its KETC call letters from the FCC. Filmmaker Charles Guggenheim was appointed general manager and a temporary studio was created in the women’s gymnasium of Washington University’s McMillan Hall.

Channel 9 Goes on the Air

At 9:00 p.m. on September 20, 1954, Channel Number 9 went on the air with a black-and-white broadcast. After a welcome from the new general manager, Martin Quigley, and the station’s board chairman, Arthur Holly Compton, Channel 9 broadcast its first program, The Second Opportunity, a play that dramatized the necessity of free thought in society.

Community Support

Community support was critical from the beginning. The three years leading up to Channel 9’s first broadcast had been challenging, but the need for educational television had become clear. To meet the station’s financial needs, mothers went door-to-door collecting contributions. And schools were so eager for televised programs in classrooms that 25 school districts offered to pay Channel 9 for its services at $1 per student. Later, membership contributions would provide financial stability and serve as a continuing means of the station’s support.

Philanthropy

Only one year after its first broadcast, Channel 9 moved into its own building on the northwest edge of the Washington University campus. Funded by Arthur B. Baer and named in honor of his parents, the Julius and Freda Baer Memorial building was the first in the nation to be constructed specifically for educational television, and it would remain Channel 9’s home for the next 43 years. St. Louis artist Fred Conway was commissioned to paint a mural in the entrance. The mural’s title said it all: “Education Through Television.” Individual donors, businesses and foundations in the St. Louis region continue to provide approximately 95 percent of the Nine Network’s funding.

Even back in the 1950s, businessman, visionary and Channel 9 co-founder Raymond Wittcoff understood the enormous potential that a new technology called television could have for educating, enriching and inspiring countless lives. He not only championed the potential of educational television locally but also strongly influenced its development nationwide. “Channel 9 can be a powerful instrument for giving people the information they need to make democracy work,” said Wittcoff in a letter to St. Louis Mayor Joseph Darst. “It will feature programs that deal objectively with important problems that face our community, our nation and the world. It will provide our homes with a window through which we can communicate with fellow citizens of the world.” Wittcoff served as chairman of Mayor Darst’s Educational Television Commission and presided at a national meeting at St. Louis City Hall where a proposal was made to create a national noncommercial TV network. The proposal was known as the “St. Louis Plan.” Wittcoff chaired the National Citizens Committee for Educational TV and also served as chairman of the executive committee of National Educational Television (NET), the predecessor to PBS. Wittcoff was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on December 5, 1921. He graduated from St. Louis Country Day School in 1938 and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Chicago in 1942. He served in the United States Navy as a lieutenant during World War II. His company, Transurban Corporation, was responsible for a number of downtown St. Louis developments, including the Gateway Tower Building, the Bank of America Building and the Thomas Jefferson Building.

Wittcoff extended his philanthropy to many institutions in addition to Nine. He also served on the boards of the St. Louis Symphony Society, St. Louis Chamber of Commerce, and the Arts and Education Council of Greater St. Louis, among many others. Both Ray Wittcoff and his wife, Roma, served as members of Nine’s board of directors. nineMagazine | January–February 2012

Nine Networking American Graduate Partners With StoryCorps Ladarrius Williams has been shot at, stabbed and jailed. But now he’s grateful to have a safe place to go that offers a brighter future than dodging gangs and killing time on the streets. Williams is a student at Shearwater High School on the campus of Ranken Tech near the Central West End. At Shearwater, the former dropout works to complete his education and set a good example for his little brother.

Though she now has two master’s degrees, Krauss herself dropped out of school after the eighth grade; she founded Shearwater to help kids like Williams, whose lives are constantly disrupted by violence and poverty. “Our students have to be able to learn when someone gets shot the night before,” Krauss says. “The rates of dysfunction and brokenness in the communities where these kids live are so elevated that we have no other

option...than to figure out strategies that reach them there and keep them engaged in a stable and firm and consistent learning place.” Caro and facilitator Naomi Greene visited Shearwater, Gateway High School and Normandy School District. They collected 17 40-minute conversations, and of those eight were flagged for possible broadcast on National Public Radio. All, including Williams’, will be archived at the Library of Congress and some will be linked to the American Graduate website (americangraduate.org) and to nineNet.org where they will fuel future conversations locally and nationally.

Williams’ inspiring story will impact a much broader audience thanks to American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen, a national initiative led by the Nine Network and funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. American Graduate, designed to increase high school graduation rates across the country, launched in St. Louis in November during a town hall broadcast live from the Nine Network and moderated by Gwen Ifill of PBS NewsHour.

As part of American Graduate’s work to address the dropout crisis, StoryCorps joined the launch activities, visiting three area schools over three days to gather stories about myriad aspects of education from teachers, students and administrators. Williams shared his story in a discussion with Shearwater Education Foundation President and CEO Stephanie Krauss and StoryCorps facilitator Gaspar Caro. (Facilitators don’t guide conversations, but they do provide recording equipment and questions to prompt ideas.)

Awards ceremony in October. The Mid-America chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences recognized the producers’ promotional piece for the Homeland initiative. The short video, which can be seen on Explorehomeland.org, previews the upcoming series Homeland, which explores issues surrounding immigration in America. The series was shot entirely in Missouri and is tentatively scheduled to air nationally on public television stations, including the Nine Network, this spring.

Find out how Dr. Ellingham (Martin Clunes) adapts to fatherhood when new Doc Martin episodes begin in March.

The wait will be over soon when season five finally makes its way to American viewers. Mark your calendar for March 8. Production of the fifth season did not wrap up until August 2011. When the new episodes debuted in Great Britain in September, more that 8 million people tuned in, representing nearly a third of folks watching television at that time. Another popular British import, Downton Abbey (which returns in January with a second season of episodes—see page 20), will begin production soon on a third season covering the lives of the Crawley family from 1920 to 1921. Viewers in England will get the first glimpse of the episodes in September.

KTRS’ Star Woodworker Hosting his own program on KTRS pays the bills for popular St. Louis radio personality McGraw Milhaven, but working with wood is his unpaid passion. He thrives on the Nine Network’s how-to shows that demonstrate carpentry and elevate it to artistry. He’s met The New Yankee Workshop and This Old House star craftsman Norm Abrams—Milhaven calls him “the king”—and Ask This Old nineNet.org

House host Kevin O’Connor. Last year Milhaven sought out the new kid on the block, Tommy MacDonald, host of Rough Cut—Woodworking With Tommy Mac, during an appearance at the St. Louis Woodworking Show in Collinsville. Milhaven invited MacDonald to be a guest on his radio program, and to Milhaven’s delight, MacDonald returned the favor, offering Milhaven a spot on Rough Cut. In August, Milhaven flew to Boston and spent the day in MacDonald’s TV studio/ woodshop set. Milhaven keeps photos on his phone of a secretary built by MacDonald that Milhaven says is worth $800,000. “It was like Picasso showing me his paintings,” he says, still in awe. In the episode they taped that day, MacDonald demonstrates the art of sand shading, a technique dating back to the ancient Egyptians. He examines examples of sand shading at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Gladney and her husband live in North County and call themselves “committed and steady” members of Nine. “There is an old saying, ‘Put your money where your mouth is.’ Well, for me, it’s ‘put your mouth

where your money is.’ I believe in the Nine Network so I maintain a paid membership, and it seems fitting to me to put time and talent into what I believe in.” When her children were young, Gladney spent many hours with them watching Sesame Street and Electric Company. “I dreamed of a time when I could get out and get involved and give back to this wonderful organization,” she remembers. “Now for sure I have the time!”

Nine to Grow On Lidia’s New Series Comes to St. Louis Celebrity chef and restaurateur Lidia Bastianich embarks on a culinary journey through the food and people at the heart of Italian-American cooking. Lidia’s Italy in America (Wednesdays, 1:00 p.m. and Saturdays, 1:30 p.m. beginning January 4 on Nine PBS) traces the impact of Italian culture on American food, drink, art, music and fashion over the course of 26-half hour episodes. She travels throughout the United States, including St. Louis and Kansas City, to interview Italian-American families still making wine and vinegar in their garages or curing their own prosciutto, and to meet third- and fourth-generation Italians putting their twist on authentic recipes. In the seventh episode, on February 15, Bastianich travels to St. Louis and visits Volpi Foods, where she chats with owner Armando Passetti about his variety of cured Italian meats. Later, she shows the rich history of the Hill. In the kitchen she makes macaroni and cheese, an American classic inspired by Italy. Here is her special recipe:

Macaroni and Cheese (Maccheroni al Formaggio) Serves 6 to 8 3 cups grated fontina 5 cups grated cheddar 4 cups milk 1 (3- to 4‐inch) piece dayold Italian bread 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus more for the baking dish 2 cups grated Grana Padano or Parmigiano‐ Reggiano 4 large fresh sage leaves 1 pound pipette pasta 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Bring a large pot of salted water to boil for pasta. In a large bowl, combine fontina and cheddar. Pour milk over. Let cheese sit in the milk for 30 minutes to an hour, until the cheese begins to break down and dissolve into the milk.

2. Grate bread on the coarse holes of a box grater to get about 11/2 cups coarse crumbs. In a small

skillet over medium heat, melt butter. When butter is melted, add breadcrumbs. Stir and toss the crumbs until crisp and toasted, about 3 minutes. Scrape crumbs into a bowl and let cool. Butter a large baking dish and coat the bottom and sides with a thin layer of some of the crumbs. Stir 1 cup of the grated Grana or Parmigiano into remaining crumbs. 3. Pour cheese and milk into a pot and add the sage leaves. Whisk over medium‐ low heat until cheese melts, about 7 to 8 minutes. Stir in remaining 1 cup grated Grana or Parmigiano. Meanwhile, add pipette to boiling water. Cook until very al dente (3 or 4 minutes shy of package cooking time) and drain. Return pasta to pot. Add cheese sauce and stir until all of the pasta is coated with the sauce. Scrape pasta into prepared baking dish and sprinkle with the bread crumbs. Bake until browned and bubbly, about 20 minutes.
