Dear Friends, Happy New Year! Thanks to you, and your generous support, we are full of hope for the new year and poised for a remarkable 2018. The second season of the hugely popular Victoria is set for January 14, a new kids series will debut in February, St. Louis episodes of Antiques Roadshow begin in February, and our American Graduate initiative will begin to focus on workforce development. You will see a lighter, brighter Nine Network brand in 2018, starting with this issue of nineMagazine. We have refreshed graphic elements, including the cover, while keeping the things you love about the magazine. Let us know what you think. And, that’s just for starters. At the Nine Network, we are inspired by our community. Thanks to supporters of our Igniting the Spirit of Possibility campaign, we have been able to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing media world. On-demand streaming has become the new way to watch television. Last year, watching Nine PBS content on devices other than the traditional television broadcast hit a new high with The Vietnam War. Nine Passport is our on-demand streaming service to provide you content anywhere, anytime. It has opened up a new audience for the quality content public media offers. Our sustaining membership level more than tripled between fiscal year 2016 and 2017 and we nearly tripled the number of Passport members between fiscal year 2016 and 2017. Most viewing of our on-demand content takes place on web browsers, followed by Apple TV, Roku and mobile devices.
The top streamed Nine Passport programs for the last quarter were Masterpiece’s Poldark and Endeavour, The Vietnam War, The Great British Baking Show, Finding Your Roots, Nova, The Tunnel, and American Experience. If you have not yet activated your Nine Passport account, please read page 8 for instruction on how to take advantage of the library of quality public television programs available to you. A new year is always a time to look forward and to contemplate what’s possible. Technology is ever-changing, and we plan to change with it. We will be a safe and trusted place for learning and inspiration for all ages across more places and more devices. And, we will always be a reliable source for what is true. We envision a confident and proud community working together through public media. Our future is in our programs and content on-air, online and on the ground across our community. We reach over 2 million viewers every month with stories that engage, entertain and educate. I look forward to continuing to update you via email on our progress and impact through monthly reports to the community. Please join us by watching our four broadcast channels, streaming Nine PBS, following us on social media, becoming a donor and supporting our Igniting the Spirit of Possibility campaign. Here’s to a great new year! In appreciation,
Jack Galmiche President and CEO

Breakout Hit Returns for Season 2 Young Queen Victoria tries to have it all—romance, power, an heir, and personal freedom—over the course of the new seven-episode season. More than 16.2 million viewers tuned in for Victoria’s premiere season, making it one of the highest-rated drama on PBS in 20 years—second only to Downton Abbey. Joining the cast in the new season is legendary actress Dame Diana Rigg (Game of Thrones, The Avengers), who plays the Duchess of Buccleuch, a fount of oldfashioned good sense for the queen, who is now in the throes of motherhood. Tom Hughes returns as the queen’s smoldering consort, Prince Albert. Victoria’s first season, focusing on the teenage queen’s audacious upstaging of her handlers to chart her own path, delighted TV critics. The Hollywood Reporter called Victoria “thoroughly enjoyable and addictive.” “Royally entertaining,” proclaimed The San Francisco 4

Chronicle, and “a sparkling gem,” said The New York Post. “Victoria is a victory,” declared The Tampa Bay Times. And, of course, the costumes and settings enchanted all: “A lavish production with impeccable period details,” penned Newsday. In the new season Sir Robert Peel, the reforming British prime minister, is at odds with his sovereign over policy; Victoria’s manipulative mother is still battling her headstrong daughter; and the Duke of Wellington, the hero of the Battle of Waterloo, is now a retired prime minister and sage mentor to the queen. Season 2 finds Victoria adapting to motherhood after the birth of her first child, a daughter (to the disappointment of many). Meanwhile, the disaster of the Anglo-Afghan War unfolds abroad, and the catastrophic Irish potato famine begins to wreak havoc. In other foreign affairs, a royal state visit to France is in the offing. nineNet.org
VICTORIA, SEASON 2: THE EPISODES Episode One: A Soldier's Daughter & the Green-Eyed Monster
Sunday, January 14, 8:00–10:00 p.m. (2 hours) New mother Victoria is impatient to return to the business of ruling a nation, while Albert attempts to protect her from the increasingly desperate news about British soldiers in Afghanistan. Victoria is thrown into turmoil by the realization that she is pregnant again, and her equilibrium is further threatened by Albert’s burgeoning friendship with a lady mathematician.
Episode Two: Warp and Weft & the Sins of the Father
Sunday, January 21, 8:00–10:00 p.m. (2 hours) Discontent is growing in the country, and Victoria throws a costume ball in a misguided attempt to help the silk weavers of Spitalfields, but the spectacular event only exposes her naivety. Unexpected grief finally forces her to put childish things away for good. Despite giving birth to a healthy Prince of Wales, Victoria finds herself paralyzed by an inexplicable sorrow.
Episode Three: Entente Cordiale Sunday, January 28, 8:00–9:00 p.m.
Victoria decides to try her hand at foreign relations, and takes the royal court on an adventure to France, stepping toe to toe with the cunning King of the French, Louis Philippe.
An all-new season of Victoria, starring Jenna Coleman as the young queen, wife, and mother, premieres January 14, on Nine PBS.
Episode Four: Faith, Hope & Charity Sunday, February 4, 8:00–9:00 p.m.
News of the horrific famine in Ireland has finally reached the Queen. She is adamant that her government should be doing more to help, but meets with surprising opposition from her prime minister.
Episode Five: The King over the Water Most intriguing to Prince Albert is the budding Industrial Revolution, which is now sweeping England. He encounters Charles Babbage’s mechanical calculator, a collaborative project with the bewitching Ada Lovelace, daughter of the scandalous Lord Byron. And, William Fothergill Cooke’s miraculous electrical telegraph and Marc Isambard Brunel’s daring—and dangerous— Thames Tunnel make the scene. Best-selling novelist and screenwriter Daisy Goodwin has been careful to stay faithful to the biographical facts in the life of Victoria, while reading between the lines to fill in the gaps. The result is a gripping historical pageant. Listen to Masterpiece Studio Podcasts to hear interviews with the stars and writer at pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/ podcasts. All episodes are available to Passport members starting with the premiere on January 14.

Episode Six: The Luxury of Conscience Sunday, February 18, 8:00–9:00 p.m.
Victoria and Albert have to face their worst nightmare as parents, while Peel takes on the ultimate battle in Parliament. When tragedy strikes, they must confront the true cost of standing by your convictions.
Episode Seven: Season Finale Sunday, February 25, 8:00–9:00 p.m.
It's Christmastime at the palace and Albert is intent on recreating the holiday joy he remembers from his youth. Victoria gets more than one surprise visitor and is threatened by a relative. Meanwhile, the festive spirit sparks romantic tension throughout the palace. nineMagazine | January–February 2018

New Series Empowers Kids to Express Their Creativity PINKALICIOUS & PETERRIFIC DEBUTS ON NINE PBS ON FEBRUARY 19.
Pinkalicious & Peterrific encourages kids to engage in the creative arts and self-expression, covering areas such as music, dance and visual arts. The series follows the adventures of Pinkalicious and her brother Peter. Pinkalicious imagines creative possibilities everywhere she looks. She is an artist at heart—and, like most creative people; she sees the world differently from others. She knows what she likes, and she’s not afraid to express herself—though she sometimes needs help from her brother, Peter, and her neighborhood friends. “PBS stations are a go-to destination for the arts in their communities across the country; we often hear from artists that their first exposure to the arts came from PBS programming,” said Linda Simensky, Vice President, Children’s Programming, PBS. “We are thrilled to build on our commitment to the arts with a PBS KIDS series entirely dedicated to the arts and creativity. Through Pinkalicious & Peterrific, we hope to encourage children across America to follow their passions and express themselves creatively, while building important skills and having fun.”

January 15 8:00 p.m. Independent Lens: I Am Not Your Negro I Am Not Your Negro was one of the most acclaimed films of 2016, a box office hit and a nominee for the Academy Award for Best Documentary. It is an imaging of the 1979 letter James Baldwin wrote to his literary agent describing his next book, a personal account of the lives and successive assassinations of three of his close friends: Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. But, at the time of Baldwin’s death in 1987, he left behind only 30 completed pages of his manuscript.

Master filmmaker Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished. The result is a radical, up-to-the-minute examination of race in America, using Baldwin’s original words, spoken by Samuel L. Jackson, and a flood of rich archival material. I Am Not Your Negro is a journey into black history that connects the past of the civil rights movement to the present black lives matter movement. It is a film that questions black representation in Hollywood and beyond. And, ultimately, by confronting the deeper connections between the lives and assassination of these three leaders, Baldwin and Peck have produced a work that challenges the very definition of what America stands for.

10:00 p.m. John Lewis— Get in the Way This is the first documentary biography of U.S. Rep. John Lewis. The film traces Lewis’ journey of courage, confrontation and hard-won triumphs. At the age of 15, his life changed forever when he heard Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the radio. It was 1955, during the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and Lewis listened with rapt attention as the young preacher called for nonviolent resistance to the harsh injustice of segregation. Lewis embraced Dr. King’s spiritual call with a fervor that would transform the course of his life. As a student activist in the vanguard of the civil rights movement, Lewis was arrested and jailed for the first time during the Nashville lunch counter sit-ins in 1960. During the 1961 Freedom Rides, he was repeatedly assaulted by angry mobs. He was the youngest speaker at the historic 1963 March on Washington, and in March 1965, Lewis led the Bloody Sunday march in Selma, AL. Once an activist pushing from the outside, Lewis, now 76 years old, has become a determined legislator creating change from the inside. Considered by many to be the conscience of Congress, he fights for those suffering from discrimination, poverty, poor education, police brutality, inaccessible healthcare and limitations on voting rights.

New Nine PBS KIDS schedule on p. 7
Nine World offers critically acclaimed, award-winning original series and specials.
POV: 500 Years The film concludes the POV 30th anniversary film marathon celebration that began December 31. From a historic genocide trial to the overthrow of a president, 500 Years tells a sweeping story of mounting resistance played out in Guatemala's recent history, through the actions and perspectives of the majority indigenous Mayan population, who now stand poised to reimagine their story. January 1 at 7:00 p.m., 11:00 p.m.
Local, USA: My Everyday Hustle My Everyday Hustle anchors January’s economic-inequality-focused film collection. It’s a first-person account of the struggles, successes, and everyday hustle of New Yorkers who support themselves and their families in jobs that are often overlooked. They share how they are chasing their version of the American Dream. How do they make ends meet in one of the most expensive cities in the nation? Is the American dream achievable for them? January 8 at 5:00 p.m., 8:00 p.m.
