Film producer Stanley Nelson (L) and Jack Galmiche, president and CEO of the Nine Network of Public Media, at a screening in April of Nelson’s film Freedom Riders.

Dear Friends, At the Nine Network of Public Media, we don’t measure our success only by ratings. We measure our success by the positive impact we have in our community. Events like our recent screenings and discussions of Freedom Riders with documentary filmmaker Stanley Nelson help us learn how to connect the history and heritage of our country to the challenges and opportunities of the present. We are currently undertaking two initiatives that are characterized by such challenges and opportunities. And both initiatives represent our longstanding commitment to children. We have partnered with the St. Louis County Children’s Service Fund and 13 local agencies to address mental health issues among young people in our region. We also have been asked to lead a national initiative, called American Graduate, to help mitigate the dropout crisis in our country. These two initiatives exemplify the importance of combining on-air, online and community resources in order to make a significant impact. Our on-air content for children has long been recognized for its quality and integrity. And we are proud that we now offer 32½ hours of outstanding children’s programming every day on Nine PBS and Nine Kids. We also offer robust activities and resources for children and parents online. But we need to do more to assure that all children become strong, healthy

and productive adults. We must take the next step to assure positive change. We are grateful for our community’s trust. And we know that decades of quality programs have contributed to that trust. In recent years, the Nine Network has been ranked the most watched public television station in the country on a per capita basis, with a particularly strong audience for children’s programs. Now, I am pleased to report that the Nine Network just received an impressive new national ranking that marks a milestone in adult audience ratings: We’re #1 in prime-time viewership! Other top five contenders were Minneapolis, San Francisco, Chicago and New York. Clearly, the audience for public television in our region is strong. We are proud of our outstanding on-air programs in all categories and we’re pleased that our websites enable you to further explore, participate, view and make connections to trusted content that interests you. Whether on air, online or in our community, the Nine Network is dedicated to the people of the St. Louis region. Yours truly,

Jack Galmiche President and CEO Nine Network of Public Media

Nine Networking Be a Sustainer Did you know that as a member of the Nine Network, you can customize your membership giving options? The convenient sustainer membership category allows members to donate to Nine in installments. You can choose how much you want to give and how often: monthly, quarterly or annually. The funds will be regularly deducted directly from your credit card, preventing you from having to deal with checks or reminders in the mail. It’s the easiest way to donate. Kate Tansey (at far right), executive director of the St. Louis County Children’s Service Fund, addresses representatives from local agencies at the Nine Center for Public Engagement in June.

Working for Children The Nine Network is partnering with the St. Louis County Children’s Service Fund and 13 local agencies to address mental health issues faced by young people in our region. The purpose of the initiative is to reduce stigmas associated with mental illness, to increase understanding of mental health issues, and to ensure that children and youth receive

needed services. The partnership also seeks to expand opportunities for collaboration among community organizations. The group of agencies will develop an approach that includes on-air, online and community efforts to raise awareness of mental health issues and increase connections to local resources. The initiative will be implemented over the next three years.

Becoming a sustainer is simple: Go to ninenet.org/sustainer and follow the prompts, or call Member Services at (314) 512-9199 or (800) 729-9966.

A St. Louis Mystery Washington University professor Gerald Early helped out History Detectives last year when they consulted him about a Jackie Robinson All-Stars scorecard. In July, Early turns the tables with his own question for the detectives.

Early found an unusual 1950s comic book, titled Negro Romance, at an auction. This was the Golden Age of comic books, when Americans voraciously consumed stories about superheroes, determined detectives and thrilling romances—yet very few featured African American characters. Did black artists create this comic book? And who was the intended audience? To solve this mystery, History Detectives host Gwendolyn Wright visits Geppi’s Entertainment Museum in Baltimore and the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art in New York City. The episode with Early airs July 12 at 8:00 p.m. and again on July 14 at 1:00 a.m. and July 17 at 4:00 p.m. Gerald Early with his rare find.

formats all of the time. Recently, the Nine Academy invited area nonprofits to come to Nine and learn how to use video to tell stories about how their own organizations have created an impact in the community. Representatives from the St. Louis Symphony, Grand Center, Inc. and Citizens for Modern Transit, among others, took the class this spring. “This class was not quite what I expected,” says Kelly Weber, vice president of marketing and communications at Grand Center, Inc. “It really turned out to be a class on composing the key elements of a story or a message with an orientation on how to use the editing software. The mechanics of managing the editing process did not come easily to me, however, understanding how to tell a story is invaluable!” Sample videos will be posted on ninenet.org/nineacademy soon. For information about future Nine Academy classes, contact Lauren Schwarze at lschwarze@ketc.org or (314) 512-9144. nineNet.org

In June, Opera Theatre of St. Louis presented a controversial and rarely staged work, The Death of Klinghoffer by composer John Adams. The opera hasn’t been staged in America since its 1991 debut. It recounts the reallife attack on the cruise ship Achille Lauro in the early 1980s in which a wheelchair-bound Jewish man, Leon Klinghoffer, was shot and thrown overboard by Palestinian terrorists. In a special, hour-long Living St. Louis (August 22, 7:00 p.m. and repeated August 27, 3:30 p.m.), producer Ruth Ezell follows the development of the production as well as the community engagement events Opera Theatre created in conjunction with this project.

Ninth Annual Visionary Awards Congratulations to Nine Network board of directors member Juanita Hinshaw, who was selected to receive Grand Center’s prestigious 2011 Visionary Award. The ceremony in May honored Hinshaw with the President’s Award. The Visionary Awards acknowledge outstanding women dedicated to the arts in St. Louis. Highlights from the ceremony will be included in a segment of Living St. Louis on July 11 at 7:00 p.m. (repeated July 16 at 3:30 p.m.).

“Producing this work was a gutsy move on the part of Opera Theatre General Director Tim O’Leary,” says Ezell. “I hope this Living St. Louis special gives viewers a broader perspective on theater craft and theater as an agent of discussion, controversy, catharsis and healing.”

PBS Toys for Kids Preschoolers in your life, and their parents, will appreciate a new line of toys from PBS. The first-ever PBS Kids toy line offers preschool toys designed to extend off-screen learning. The toys are exclusively available online at the new PBS Kids Shop (PBSKIDSshop.com), until early fall, when they will become available at additional online sites and at in-store retailers. “The toys facilitate hands-on learning and parent-child interaction through creative play, which we know can help kids build critical skills to prepare them for success in school and in life,” says PBS Senior Vice President, Children’s Media Lesli Rotenberg. In addition to the new toy line, the PBS Kids Shop offers educational books,

Help to Tune in Nine For viewers still having trouble receiving Nine’s signal, the country’s much-heralded switch to digital broadcasting continues to present problems to a few people. To help viewers tune in our signal, Nine’s Vice President of Engineering and Operations Chrys Marlow wrote a step-by-step guide, posted on ninenet.org. Just click “Find Help” and then “Troubleshooting Your TV Signal Reception.” The guide includes detailed photos and graphics, as well as links to helpful sites. Nine broadcasts its signal at full strength all of the time. Most difficulties Marlow has helped solve stem from home antennas aimed in the wrong direction. The transmitters of several St. Louis television stations are geographically grouped in one area, while Nine’s is much farther south, so if you pick up certain channels well but have a problem picking up Nine, that could be the reason why. Marlow also recommends mounting your antenna outside and using your TV set’s built-in signal quality/strength indicator to adjust it. If you still have reception problems after following the tips on Nine’s website, please feel free to email Chrys Marlow (cmarlow@ketc.org), or call Member Services at (314) 512-9199 or (800) 729-9966.

The Cronkite Award recognizes “television journalistic excellence in political coverage, particularly innovative, issue-focused coverage that informs viewers about their electoral choices.” Judges selected PBS NewsHour for its “thorough and balanced” coverage of key midterm races in Nevada, Wisconsin, Kentucky and Florida that were “representative of the changes in the national narrative and electorate mood.” Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff were both praised by judges for “focusing on the issues, talking with real voters and letting the candidates explain themselves,” adding that “they avoided the horserace component that is so typical in political coverage.” Continued on page 10

KETC was our first thought because, trite as it sounds, Channel 9 really was his window to the world. In his childhood, The Letter People helped him learn to read, the Sesame Street characters were his friends, and Fred Rogers and his Neighborhood were his peace, comfort and security. In later years, he learned history from the Ken Burns series and how to help build our new house from shows like This Old House. If KETC had carried live coverage of sporting events, he’d never have changed the channel! Thank you for being a part of our world. Each episode features growing tips, recipes and decorating ideas. This recipe is a perfect summer dish that makes good use of the season’s fresh vegetables and herbs.

Lemon-Dill Mayo:

Directions: Preheat an outdoor grill. Mix the mayo ingredients together in a small bowl, and then divide it in half. Set aside one portion to spread on the toast after the salmon is grilled. Rub both sides of the salmon fillets with the remaining Lemon-Dill Mayo. Just before you put the fillets on the grill, place the bread slices on a baking sheet and brush them on both sides with olive oil. Transfer the bread to the grill. Then lay the fillets on the grill and cook them for 2 to 3 minutes on each side, until the fish is cooked completely and flakes with a fork. Remove the fillets from the grill and set them aside. Remove the bread when it is toasted on both sides. To assemble the sandwiches, spread the reserved LemonDill Mayo over the toasted bread slices. Place a salmon fillet on each of four slices. Top with the cucumbers, tomato slices, arugula, and red onion rings, and season with sea salt and black pepper to taste. Place the remaining toasted bread slices on top, cut each sandwich in half diagonally, and serve immediately. Serves four. Reprinted from the book P. Monday–Friday 6:00 p.m. Jim Lehrer

This has been a momentous time for Lehrer. In addition to his NewsHour announcement, he was named this year’s recipient of the National Press Club’s prestigious Fourth Estate Award for career achievement. Citing Lehrer's ability to remain “the true voice of reason, balance and fairness,” “amid the cacophony of a sometimes shrill media landscape,” Press Club President Mark Hamrick said Lehrer was chosen for the award because he “has embodied the time-tested core values of journalism dating back to when many people had only black and white screens and continuing through today’s era of high definition television and social media.”
