Dear Friends, As supporters of the Nine Network, I am confident that you appreciate the value of our programming and the importance of our local work. We strongly believe that our productions, initiatives and community partnerships help strengthen civic life in the St. Louis region. I hope you share our conviction that the Nine Network is an essential St. Louis nonprofit organization. We often hear people say they can’t imagine St. Louis without “Channel 9.” Well, neither can we. We feel a kinship with the great educational institutions, libraries and arts organizations that have long served our region. They are part of the fabric of our society. And like all worthy nonprofits, they need and deserve our support. We are no exception. All of us at the Nine Network believe in our value to the St. Louis region. And we understand that as stewards of the public trust we must have the vision and wisdom to prepare for the future. The Nine Network is at a critical juncture. We are a national leader in public television—for the strength of our viewership, for our local productions, and for our approach to community engagement, particularly through our leadership of the national American Graduate initiative. At the same time, we are facing the challenges of rapidly changing technology and much needed upgrades to our facility. The Nine Network is an organization that has always invested in the community it serves. And, we are proud of the long-term support of our community. But this is a time when we must ask our community—viewers, members, donors, partners and the community at large—to make a special investment in our future. We are more than half way to our goal to raise $50 million through our capacity-building campaign—Igniting the Spirit of Possibility. But we have a long way to go. I hope you will consider making a campaign contribution signifying that you consider the Nine Network a nonprofit organization worthy of your investment. We want to be a significant benefit to the people of our region for many years to come! Yours truly,

Jack Galmiche President and CEO Nine Network of Public Media

AMERICAN

Summer

POLITICS AND PATRIOTISM COME TO A CRESCENDO THIS SUMMER. FROM ELECTION COVERAGE TO THE OLYMPICS, THE NINE NETWORK BRINGS YOU FASCINATING PROGRAMS ON WHAT MAKES THIS NATION TICK. e know how to cover politics. Today, politics is often a launching point for our three weekly series produced in our studios at the Nine Network: Donnybrook (Thursdays at 7:00 p.m.), Donnybrook…Your Turn (Thursdays at 7:30 p.m.) and Stay Tuned (Fridays at 7:00 p.m.). We start off July programming with a celebration of our country’s 240th birthday. America’s favorite Independence Day celebration, A Capitol Fourth (Monday, July 4, at 7:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.) features well-known musical artists and puts viewers front and center for the greatest display of fireworks anywhere in the nation. This year, the concert will also feature special segments in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the United Service Organizations (USO) and the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service. A Capitol Fourth is broadcast live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. 4

July–August 2016 | nineMagazine

For the entire month of July, Nine World brings you programming on issues that matter in this year’s election: immigration, national defense, health care, race relations, criminal justice and economic inequality. To find Nine World’s TV schedule, go to nineNet.org (see page 27 for program highlights).

POLITICS

Standing at the epicenter of global politics, the story of the White House is the story of America itself. The two-hour The White House: Inside Story premieres July 12 at 7:00 p.m. It celebrates the 200-year history of the White House through the stories of the First Families who have called it home and through the recollections of workers, historians and members of the press who have spent time within the illustrious building. Weaving together video footage, still photos and interviews, The White House: Inside Story explores the history of the Executive Mansion through the eyes of the remarkable

people who help make this institution live and breathe—both past and present. The history of this stately home makes way for the reality of politics as delegates make their way to the Republican and Democratic National Conventions to nominate their candidates for the November 8 presidential election. (Don’t’ forget to register to vote!). PBS NewsHour, in partnership with NPR, will offer gavel-to-gavel coverage of the Republican National Convention (July 18–21, 7:00–10:00 p.m.) in Cleveland, OH, and the Democratic National Convention (July 25–28, 7:00–10:00 p.m.) in Philadelphia, PA. Primetime coverage of PBS Election 2016 on Nine PBS will be co-anchored by Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff (who have 20 presidential campaigns between them) and will also be available via live streaming. NPR reporters Rachel Martin and Sue Davis and the NewsHour’s Lisa Desjardins and John Yang will be on the convention floors nineNet.org

talking with delegates and elected officials. NPR National Political Correspondent Mara Liasson, Senior Editor Ron Elving and Political Editor Domenico Montanaro and NewsHour’s regulars David Brooks, Amy Walter and Mark Shields will be featured analysts. Later this summer, an encore presentation of six films from the American Experience awardwinning series, The Presidents, airs August 8–18, in prime time. The six presidents who served from 1963– 1981—John F. Kennedy, Jr., Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and George H. W. Bush—were among those who held the most powerful office on earth and occupied a unique place at the center of national and world events. At once chief executive, head of state, commander-in-chief, and leader of a political party, the President of the United States is also a prominent cultural figure, and a bellwether of society. We hope you are inspired to learn all that you can by our programming on politics and engage with our democracy.

THE OLYMPICS

The Summer Olympic Games will shine brightly from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 5–21. Before the games begin, Nine PBS will air three films on Tuesday, August nineNet.org

2, that tell compelling stories of Olympic history and what it takes to win gold. See how the Nazis and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) turned, to their mutual advantage, a relatively small, elitist sports event into an epic global and mass media spectacle that, despite the IOC’s determined attempts to forget, continues to this day. Nazi Games— Berlin 1936 airs at 7:00 p.m. The Boys of ’36 is inspired by Daniel James Brown’s critically acclaimed nonfiction book The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The thrilling, true story of the American Olympic rowing team that triumphed against all odds in Nazi Germany has been on the New York Times bestseller list for 105 weeks as of press time. The Boys of ’36 is the story of nine young, working-class men from the University of Washington who took the rowing world and the nation by storm when they captured the gold medal at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. These sons of loggers, shipyard workers and farmers overcame tremendous hardship—psychological, physical and economic—to beat not only the Ivy League teams of the East Coast but Adolf Hitler’s elite German rowers. Their unexpected victory, and the obstacles they overcame

to achieve it, gave hope to a nation struggling to emerge from the depths of the Depression. The film features interviews with author Daniel James Brown, historians and surviving children of the 1936 Washington team. “The Boys of ’36 is really an inspiring story,” says Mark Samels, American Experience executive producer. “These remarkable young men—with nothing more than strength of character, hard work and determination—triumphed over unimaginable odds. We’re proud to bring this story, so vividly recounted in Brown’s bestseller, to our audience.” The Boys of ’36 airs at 8:00 p.m. T-Rex: Her Fight for Gold is the coming-of-age story of boxing phenom Claressa “T-Rex” Shields from Flint, Michigan. Shields was just 17 years old when she won the gold medal for women’s boxing in 2012—the first time women were allowed to box in the Olympic games. The filmmakers continued to document Shields after her return from the London games as she navigated the pressure of Olympic competition, family drama, and Claressa’s attempts to find love and support in the neglected city of Flint. Shields is scheduled to complete in the 2016 Olympics in Rio. Independent Lens: T-Rex—Her Fight for Gold airs at 9:00 p.m. nineMagazine | July–August 2016

Jack Galmiche, president and CEO of the Nine Network, Paula Kerger, president and CEO of PBS, and Judy and Harvey Harris welcomed more than 50 guests to a campaign event at the Harris’ home May 20.

CAPACITY BUILDING CAMPAIGN IGNITES THE SPIRIT OF POSSIBILITY n engaging discussion about the Nine Network’s capacity building campaign took place during a reception held May 20 at the home of Harvey and Judy Harris. The evening was highlighted by remarks from Harvey Harris, Nine Network board member, Paula Kerger, president and CEO of PBS, and Jack Galmiche, president and CEO of the Nine Network. Harvey Harris greeted guests with a heartfelt message about the important role the Nine Network plays in our community, saying, “Nine is an organization that is near and dear to my heart. I’ve served on the board for many years and have a great appreciation for the work Nine does in our community. Nine is more than just the programs you watch; Nine is a community service organization that promotes dialogue in our community and keeps us engaged in what’s important.” Paula Kerger added that with more than 2 million viewers a month, the Nine Network is one of the most watched public television in the United States. “Across the PBS network, the Nine Network is a national leader,” said Kerger. Jack Galmiche noted that the Nine Network receives only 10% of its funding from government sources, with approximately 90% coming from individuals, businesses and foundations in the St. Louis region. “Now in the final phase of only the second campaign in our 61-year history,” said Galmiche, “Nine is asking for your support to sustain us as one of the most watched public television stations in the country and as a vital educational, cultural and entertainment resource for all of us in the St. Louis region.”

A teacher at Vashon High, Mrs. Rhoda wanted to leave a legacy of helping St. Louis students fund their college degrees. “Thanks to the stewardship of the St. Louis Community Foundation, she’s making a difference even today. I followed in her footsteps, and am now an elementary school teacher. As I am sure she did years ago, I love making a difference in the lives of my kids. New on Nine Cool Down with Two Dramas This Summer When the heat outside gets to be too much, head inside, make some popcorn and relax while watching these two new, compelling dramas. The rise and fall of a black jazz band is the newest period drama on Nine PBS. The eight-part Dancing on the Edge premiered June 26 (episode one), but the remaining episodes will air Sundays, beginning July 3 at 7:00 p.m. Dancing on the Edge details the rise of the Louis Lester Band—a jazz band in 1930’s London led by Louis Lester, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave, Amistad, Kinky Boots). The band encounters racism and classism, while Louis becomes a suspect in a murder case, putting him on the run and possibly leading to the band’s demise. In addition to Ejiofor, the all-star cast includes John Goodman as Masterson and Jacqueline Bisset as Lady Cremone. Also on Sundays, Nine PBS brings the critically acclaimed British crime series The Tunnel to U.S. viewers. The series

Created for kids ages 5-9 to learn science, it centers on Thomas Edison (brought back to virtual life as a living hologram) who guides the Secret Lab Kids on science and humor-filled adventures across time and space. The case takes a surreal turn when a shocking discovery is made at the crime scene, forcing the French and British police into an uneasy partnership. As the serial killer uses ever more elaborate and ingenious

them to push conventional scientific and technological boundaries through experimentation. Each episode contains segments that promote STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) principles. Lead character Angie, a 12-year-old prodigy, is always experimenting and designing new inventions with her brother JD, and two other scienceminded friends, Kenty and Nicky. When the bright and resourceful preteen cracks a 75-year-old code and discovers the secret underground laboratory of her idol, Thomas Alva Edison, the group uncovers a whimsical

Election Theme Helps Define the Issues

On one block in Athens, Georgia, two communities steeped in history—one black, one white—strive to keep their respective legacies relevant in a changing American South. Can they find common ground? Watch Old South to find out. (Tuesday, July 26, 7:00 p.m.) Bridging the Divide: Tom Bradley and the Politics of Race tells the little-known story of Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley, the first African-American mayor elected in a major American city with an overwhelmingly white majority in 1973. This documentary examines the creation of Bradley’s extraordinary multiracial coalition, which set the foundation for sustainable coalitions that encouraged the elections of minority candidates nationwide, most notably President Barack Obama. The film brings into sharp focus the issues of police brutality in minority communities and the challenges of police reform. (Tuesday, July 26, 9:00 p.m.)
