Watch the Best of Nine PBS Anytime, Anywhere p. 7 Nine PBS Scores Three Emmys p. 4 New Podcast Debuts p. 5
Dear Friends, It’s hard to believe we’ve come to the end of another year. While the world has had its ups and downs, Nine PBS continues to offer calm in the storm, bringing you stories that uplift, inform, and celebrate our world and each other.
September’s Storytime in the Commons/Be My Neighbor Day was a hit with young readers and families.
This year we refocused our local content on the stories you want to see. On Emmy Awardwinning Living St. Louis, our producers brought you intriguing interviews with the people doing the good work of making this community stronger. Donnybrook continues to have tough conversations, and although there are inevitable disagreements, the positive relationship between our panelists always shines through. Our special, Power of the Pitch, focused on renewal, possibility, and development in our city. If you haven’t seen it, make sure you add it to your streaming schedule. It’s a fresh look at the region, with the St. Louis Cardinals and CITY SC as the backdrop. And, Teaching in Room 9, our award-winning kids’ program, got a new instudio set, a beloved host, and introduced field trips, aimed at giving kids the tools they need to start kindergarten on the right foot.
The 2023 Raymond H. Wittcoff Legacy Luncheon on September 20 included clips of our fall lineup and a heartfelt thank you to our Nine PBS Legacy Society members.
These local programs are just a few ways Nine PBS is working to change the narrative of our city, reminding everyone why St. Louis is great. They are always on for your viewing pleasure; streaming on ninepbs.org and the PBS App. We look forward to 2024 as we continue to shed light on the positive, the growth, and our hope for the future. These local stories couldn’t be told without our champions. It’s supporters like you and local foundations, businesses, and organizations that enable future generations to enjoy and learn through Nine PBS. Thank you and happy holidays. Amy Shaw

Stream the Best of Nine PBS It’s a 24/7 digital world! Some of us still prefer broadcast television, but most of those watching Nine PBS these days stream their favorites on their own schedule. Nine PBS has strategically kept pace with the transition to digital, and now most of our programming, national and local, is available to stream on the PBS App, with extended access to members on Nine PBS Passport. Sixty-nine years ago, people and organizations in our region came together in the spirit of cooperation to create the St. Louis Educational Television Commission. Public schools, private schools, universities, libraries, museums, and civic organizations all came together to create an entity with great potential to affect everyone in the community positively. At the time, it was a groundbreaking new system of broadcasting. Today, our goal remains the same: to help our community flourish, but the medium has expanded to provide greater access and more flexibility. You can now watch Nine PBS on your phone, your computer, or your favorite streaming platforms, like Roku, whenever you choose. Or live stream the broadcast on the PBS App and ninepbs.org/watch. This adaptation has let us remain relevant in the everchanging media landscape. PBS began its transformation into multiplatform media in 2010 with the PBS App. In 2015, PBS launched its new member benefit, Passport. Now PBS launches new series on the PBS App even before broadcast, like the recent Once Upon a Time in Northern Ireland, which had its broadcast premiere three months after its appearance on the app. Doc Martin, World on Fire, and November’s Little Bird are three other examples of member access to entire seasons or series on the PBS App before broadcast with Nine PBS Passport. The PBS App is available on lots of different platforms; find out which ones and how to troubleshoot if you are having problems at ninepbs.org/app or you can call us. We are here to help. When you become a Nine PBS member, you get Nine PBS Passport, extended access to your favorite PBS shows where you can watch old favorites and entire seasons of the latest releases. Nine PBS Is on Hulu + Live TV In late September, Nine PBS began live streaming on Hulu + Live TV. Hulu + Live TV’s subscribers will now have access to inspiring and educational content from Nine PBS , like Living St. Louis, Donnybrook, and Power of the Pitch, along with PBS favorites, including PBS NewsHour, Frontline, Antiques Roadshow, and the PBS KIDS channel. “Drawn In is an incredible addition to our program at Breakpoint. As we reflect on another impactful year of Nine PBS’s community engagement efforts, we are grateful for our community of supporters. Because of their generosity, Nine PBS is a dynamic community institution and continues to be relevant in the daily lives of people across our region, working toward a reality where all people can flourish. Because of the collective support of our community, our Early Learning Initiative experienced numerous successes this year, including nurturing long-standing partnerships, deepening our presence in the community, and journeying into new partnerships. Through this work, we are eliminating barriers for children and families as we help to increase literacy and school readiness and decrease the digital divide. During the summer, Nine PBS and Breakpoint Tennis & Life Skills Academy built a new partnership to help mitigate long-standing literacy achievement gaps experienced by our region’s most under-resourced children. Breakpoint's tennis and reading camps are dedicated to enhancing the mental well-being of
youth by fostering positive self-esteem, confidence, and pathways to postsecondary success through year-round tennis and life skills programs. Nine PBS’s Drawn In curriculum was incorporated across five camps for 150-plus campers, leading to 1,000-plus cumulative reading hours. “Drawn In is an incredible addition to our program at Breakpoint. Literacy is an integral part of our campers’ lives and we’re thrilled to implement a culturally competent curriculum that reflects the kids we support,” says Ben Gildehaus, cofounder and executive director of program development at Breakpoint Tennis. To our community, thank you for your support! We are excited to see what opportunities arise in the new year as we continue to support children, families, and educators so that all children can thrive. Your gift on Giving Tuesday will have a longlasting effect on our ability to provide the best in public television programming, local series and specials, and on-the-ground kids' initiatives.
November 28, 2023
Give at ninepbs.org/GivingTuesday Your donation on Giving Tuesday helps change the narrative of our city and region. Nine PBS, an award-winning and community-owned public media station, magnifies and deepens understanding of our community to help our region flourish. We believe in St. Louis and produce positive stories about our region, like our recent Power of the Pitch special, which tapped into the transformative power of a Major League Soccer expansion team, a state-of-the-art stadium, and renewed community spirit.
