Dear Friends, We host many great events at the Nine Network throughout the year, but this summer we have a few once-in-a-generation events you will not want to miss. If you value trusted, independent media like the Nine Network, your support for our events and membership drives are a great way to show your appreciation. With government funding for public broadcasting in jeopardy, we depend on support from the community we serve now more than ever. Support from the community enables the Nine Network to bring you the programs you love, like Antiques Roadshow. Antiques Roadshow’s St. Louis stop on July 8 is a rare opportunity for fans of the show to participate in PBS's most-watched ongoing series. Part adventure, part history lesson, and part treasure hunt, Antiques Roadshow marks its 21st season this year. Another singular event this summer is Wild Alaska Live. Over three nights in July, Wild Alaska Live will visit national forests and parks in search of some of the world’s most remarkable animals as they gather by the thousands to take part in Alaska’s summer feast, an event never before captured live on television. Wild Alaska Live is hosted by Chris Kratt and Martin Kratt, the creators and stars of the hit PBS KIDS® series Wild Kratts. Wild Alaska Live will air on the Nine PBS KIDS 24/7 channel and stream live. As the only free, national, 24/7 kids’ TV service in the U.S., PBS KIDS 24/7 channel is a game-changer—especially for low-income and underserved families.
Another rare event is the solar eclipse on August 21. The St. Louis area will be one of the very best places to witness it just after 1:15 p.m. Nova producers will have three live trucks in the area that day and Nine producers will be shooting footage as well. Nova will capture the spectacular event in a special presentation at 9:00 p.m. to air hours after it takes place. We have an unrivaled opportunity for you on September 9 when we welcome Ken Burns and Lynn Novick to St. Louis for a preview screening of their latest documentary—The Vietnam War—at the Touhill Performing Arts Center. Tickets are available at nineNet.org/Vietnam. Ken and Lynn will also be the keynote speakers for our first-ever Pioneer Spirit Gala later that evening. Our team is hard at work planning an unforgettable evening that will benefit the Nine Network. We are honored to have such a distinguished group of co-chairs featured on our cover (read more about the gala on page 4). The Nine Network offers you unique opportunities to connect with your community and the world. Help us spread the word about the value of public media. Thank you for your support. Yours truly,
Jack Galmiche President and CEO

Celebrating Our Past Inspiring Our Future The 2017 Pioneer Spirit Gala is, on the face of it, a celebration of many things. It’s an evening where we celebrate the community that supports us, the success and momentum of our current capacity building campaign, our proud history and where we boldly consider our role in a future that’s not without uncertainty. On top of all that, this year we will be joined by two of the most celebrated documentary filmmakers ever to peer through a lens. On Saturday, September 9, the Nine Network will host its first-ever gala with the theme of “Celebrating Our Past. Inspiring Our Future.” Joining the celebration, which will pay tribute to the 50th anniversary of the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967, are acclaimed documentary filmmakers Ken Burns and Lynn Novick. They will serve as keynote speakers and discuss their latest 4

work, the documentary series The Vietnam War, as well as the role public broadcasting plays in American civic life. The evening will also explore the origins of educational television in St. Louis, with all of the historical developments and legendary figures whose contributions made its continuation possible. It will pay tribute to some of the larger-than-life figures that have made stories from our collective past come alive in ways that transcend the mediums of film or television. Finally, perhaps most importantly, it will invite a confident look toward the future of community-supported public television. While we recognize that technology will change public media in ways impossible to anticipate, we know that the hunger for profound, deeply human stories will live on. nineNet.org
And, because that hunger will always exist, the Nine Network will continue to rely on an engaged community with leaders like those that make up our gala committee. Preparations for the gala are proceeding under the leadership of gala co-chairs Maxine Clark, CEO of the Clark-Fox Family Foundation and founder of BuildA-Bear Workshop; community volunteer Kim Olson; Pat Sly, former executive vice president of Emerson; and Jack Galmiche, president and CEO of the Nine Network.
Once and always a community effort In the early 1950s, when the idea for an educational television station was being envisioned for the first time, KETC relied on an army of PTA members fundraising door-to-door in what might be called the station’s first membership drive. More recently, with future government funding in a place of great uncertainty, we again call on members of our community to sign a petition of support and participate in a campaign explaining why they continue to value PBS at nineNet.org/valuePBS.
nineNet.org
Community leaders have also stepped up en masse to show their support for the Nine Network’s Pioneer Spirit Gala. Their efforts very much mirror the environment of 1951, when Mayor Joseph Darst assembled a committee of prominent businessmen and educators to form the St. Louis Regional Educational Television Commission. The support of exemplary citizens like honorary gala co-chairs David and Mary Steward and David and Thelma Steward reflects the belief of the city’s leaders in the power of public media to affect positive change. The Nine Network is honored to have two generations of one of St. Louis’ most philanthropic families supporting our efforts. In the early days of KETC, a booming population and surging post-war growth drove optimism. Now projects like the Cortex Innovation District, a bustling entrepreneurial scene and resurgent areas like the Grand Center Arts District are beacons of progress and new beginnings for the city. Throughout, a thriving and independent public television station has been a key symbol for channeling this spirit of possibility in the region.

The timeless art of storytelling What is it about public media and the Nine Network that is able to rally community support, year after year, from community leaders and our most important source of funding, viewers like you? We like to believe that it’s our commitment to quality, educational storytelling, from our youngest viewers falling in love with their first shows to lifelong learners who have never lost the desire to discover. In 1967, shortly after signing into law the Public Broadcasting Act, President Lyndon Johnson declared that the purpose of the act was to use noncommercial broadcasting as a way “to enrich man’s spirit.” With long-form stories centered on baseball, prohibition, parks and even the bard of the Show-Me-State, Mark Twain, Ken Burns and Lynn Novick connect with St. Louisans in a special way. The stories they tell matter to our community and we’re proud to host them on our most special night of the year. We hope you’ll join us in keeping community-supported storytelling through public television alive and well. After all, what better way to celebrate our past and inspire our future than through storytelling?
Featured Guests: Ken Burns and Lynn Novick
The Nine Network will host Ken Burns and Lynn Novick and the public on September 9 for a preview screening and discussion of their upcoming series The Vietnam War at the Touhill Performing Arts Center. “This is a very limited tour for Ken and Lynn to promote their latest PBS documentary series,” says Nine Network President and CEO Jack Galmiche. “So we’re more than delighted they chose St. Louis to make a stop in.” The 10-part, 18-hour documentary series begins on Nine PBS on September 17. Tickets: September 9, 1:00 p.m., Touhill Performing Arts Center, $25, nineNet.org/Vietnam
The Story Collection Project To further explore the significance of the Vietnam War, we are seeking diverse perspectives from members of the community for the Story Collection Project: The Vietnam War. We are looking for veterans, those on the home front, and the Vietnamese community to submit stories and remembrances. The Nine Network is partnering with the Missouri History Museum as part of the relaunch of Soldiers Memorial Military Museum on this initiative. Please submit your story or encourage someone you know to submit their story at nineNet.org/ vietnamstories. If you prefer to submit a written letter, please mail it to: Vietnam War Stories, Nine Network, 3655 Olive Street, St. Louis MO, 63108.

Nine Networking says the community is about “creating opportunities for serendipitous collisions.” The mashup of different perspectives helps established companies thrive, too. Boeing, Express Scripts, World Wide Technologies, MasterCard, DuPont, and Monsanto all have space in Cortex. Like the Central West End to its north, the development of Cortex was also an urban value proposition. The now vibrant, mixed-use neighborhood has its own festival (Murmuration), Metro stop and anchor retailer, Ikea. The neighborhood is in the midst of a housing boom, with 2,000 new apartment units coming to market.
Cortex Puts Missouri on the Map The connotation of “cortex” suggests the complex and magnificent human brain, an apt metaphor for the Center of Research Technology and Entrepreneurial Exchange (Cortex), a new innovation community near the Central West End in St. Louis. A new, one-hour documentary from the Nine Network, Smart People. Cool Places. The Story of Cortex, tells the compelling story of Cortex. Interviews with more than 30 people give first-hand accounts of how Cortex went from an idea to a model for urban, economic development. The idea for Cortex started in 1995 when questions were being raised about how the area’s excellence in the life sciences could play a bigger role in the region’s growth. Individuals, academic institutions and creative alliances began brainstorming together to find new approaches to collaboration and funding that might help propel nineNet.org
economic growth. It wasn’t until a trip to Boston in 2002 by key stakeholders to learn how MIT used $6 million of its endowment to invest in the neighborhood surrounding the university that seed money was secured for the project. The five major partners at that time were Washington University, BJC Healthcare, St. Louis University, University of Missouri St. Louis, and the Missouri Botanical Garden. An urban value proposition Cortex is now seen as a major hub for innovation in St. Louis and the Midwest. Its success piggybacks on the successful revitalization of the historic Central West End neighborhood. Cortex sits on a 200acre site on the southwestern edge of Midtown. The Cortex work space includes diverse companies in information technology, law, biosciences, engineering, and consumer products. It’s a campus-like environment with a mix of people, cultures, and experiences. Dennis Lower, president and CEO of Cortex,
The influence of Cortex cannot be overstated. “Cortex puts Missouri on the map,” says Randy Shilling, founder, OPO Startups, a coworking center for digital startups in St. Charles, MO. Patty Hagan, PhD, president and executive director, T-REX, a technology business incubator in downtown St. Louis, says, “St. Louis was always an entrepreneurial city. We’re just returning to our roots in many ways.” Smart People. Cool Places. The Story of Cortex was made possible by the generous support of Dr. William H. Danforth, Dan and Connie Burkhardt, Constance and John McPheeters, and Aries Rental Company. Produced by Patrick Murphy.

Woods Named Digital Innovator
Andrea Woods, a teacher at Hawthorn Leadership School for Girls, St. Louis, since 2015, was named Missouri’s PBS Digital Innovator. PBS Digital Innovators set the bar for thoughtful tech integration in the classroom. These pre-K-12 educators are not defined by the gadgets they use, but by the unique way they approach education. Woods teaches humanities at Hawthorn, the first public all-girls charter school in Missouri. Andrea's passion for social justice, infused with project-based learning and technology, drives her humanities classroom. She carefully designs her curriculum to inspire her students to become liberated leaders who use technology to create a more equitable world. “For example, I facilitate a project-based learning unit entitled ‘If I Ruled the World’ where students learn about the rich history of ancient Egyptian civilization to inform the creation of their own civilizations,” says Woods. As a Digital Innovator, she will receive professional development courses through PBS Education, exclusive classroom resources, and an invitation to the 2017 PBS Digital Summit. Woods was one of 52 teachers across the U.S. honored. Go to pbs.org/ education/digitalinnovators to read more about these inspiring educators.

Home Fires to Continue in Novels The recently aired second season of period drama Home Fires airing on PBS’ Masterpiece is also its last; it was canceled by UK network ITV. Fans mobilized to try and save the show, but they were ultimately unsuccessful. However, series creator Simon Block will continue the story of Home Fires in three new novels. The first, called Keep the Home Fires Burning, will be released as a four-part e-book serial this summer (it’ll be available later as a complete paperback in the fall). The novel will pick up directly from where the shocking Season 2 finale leaves off, which should be a comfort to fans waiting to know what happens next.

New on Nine
“Wild Alaska Live is the blueprint for the incredible family trip you’ve always wanted to take. The beauty of America’s most remote state is awe-inspiring and jaw-dropping.” —Beth Hoppe, Chief Programming Executive and General Manager, General Audience Programming, PBS
Live Look at Life and Survival in the Alaskan Wilderness Wild Alaska Live, PBS’s latest venture into live TV, is a three-part, multiplatform production that airs July 23, 26 and 30 at 7:00 p.m., as a part of its “Summer of Adventure” lineup. Over three nights, in partnership with the BBC, PBS turns the cameras on a must-see natural spectacle that plays out across the vast Alaskan wilderness, where some of the world’s most remarkable animals— bears, wolves, moose, orcas and eagles—gather by the thousands to take part in Alaska’s summer feast, an event never before captured live on television. Wild Alaska Live is hosted by Emmy Award®-winning zoologists, adventurers, and brothers Chris Kratt and Martin Kratt, the creators, executive producers, and stars of the hit PBS KIDS® series Wild Kratts. nineNet.org
Liz Bonnin and Steve Backshall, both of whom presented 2015’s Big Blue Live television event, which captured the late summer feeding frenzy of marine life in Monterey Bay, California, will join the Kratts as on-air correspondents. Top predators in all their glory What happens in the Alaskan wilderness in late July affects the animals’ survival and well-being for the remainder of the year. With some of largest areas of wilderness left on Earth, Alaska is the best place in the world to see the huge animals and top predators in all their glory. The live presentation also explores the challenges of preserving America’s last frontier, as scientists, filmmakers, photographers, and other experts gather to tell some of the planet’s extraordinary wildlife stories. Wild Alaska Live will visit several locations, including points near Juneau and the Tongass National Forest, where the team will look for black bears and bald eagles; the vast
Kenai Fjords National Park, in search of orcas and humpback whales; and the wilderness of Katami National Park, where brown bears and elusive wolves live and hunt. Wild Alaska Live will also introduce viewers to local experts who explore the relationship between the indigenous people of Alaska and the animals among whom they coexist. On PBS digital platforms and on social media, viewers can explore the Alaskan wilderness as events take place during the week. Inspired by stunning images, and through video and interactive games, audiences can dive deeper into the region’s environmental challenges and its conservation success stories. America ReFramed: Revolution ’67 is a meticulously reconstructed documentary on the response of Newark’s black citizens to the beating and purported death of a black taxi driver, John Smith, by police. The heavy-handed response of the police and city leaders turned a spontaneous protest against police actions into a full-scale revolt. After 6 days, 26 people lay dead, 725 people were injured, and close to 1,500 had been arrested. Revolution ’67 marshals chilling archival footage and the vivid memories of key players—citizens, community activists, police, National Guardsmen and the state’s future governor—to render an insider’s account of racial and economic division in an American city.

America ReFramed: Learning to Swallow tells the story of Patsy Desmond, an artist chronicling her life through self-portraits in early ‘90s Chicago. Full of drama, outrageous style, and charisma, no one guessed that behind it all she was hurtling toward her ruin. In an uncontrolled, manic-depressive episode, Desmond attempted suicide by drinking drain cleaner. Although she survived, the incident destroyed her digestive system. Learning to Swallow follows Desmond over four years of recovery: through reconstructive surgeries, OxyContin and alcohol addictions, and the ultimate struggle to keep hope.
