Dear Friends, My friend and mentor, Raymond H. Wittcoff, passed away January 2 at his home in Phoenix, surrounded by his wife, Roma, and his family. Ray, who was 96 years old, was the last surviving founder of the Nine Network and leaves a legacy as a public television pioneer and community leader. He will be missed dearly.

I hope you are following us on Facebook and Instagram for our Mister Rogers-inspired “Wednesday Wisdom” and the various opportunities throughout the year for you and your family to join us in celebrating the legacy of Mister Rogers. Read our cover story in this issue for more information.

We have established the Raymond Wittcoff Memorial Fund to honor Ray’s spirit, memory and commitment to public media. The fund will support his vision of a television station dedicated to education and service to the community. Read more about Ray later in this issue.

Also, congratulations to Nine Network board member Dennis Lower, who received the 2018 FOCUS Leadership Award in January. This prestigious award is presented annually to individuals who demonstrate innovative leadership, generate a meaningful impact in the community, and encourage strong community leadership in others—an apt description of Dennis.

Ray believed in St. Louis and, particularly, in the future and the vitality of our region. He understood that advancements in technology would continue to revolutionize our industry. The things that would remain constant would be the dedication to education and civil discourse, and a talent pipeline that would grow and sustain the industry and the Nine Network. Through the Raymond Wittcoff Memorial Fund, the Nine Network will provide a pathway for this talent pipeline, via an ambassador program, to build the requisite skills and knowledge and continue his legacy. Please contact me if you would like to honor Ray by supporting the fund. With the 50th anniversary of the first airing of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood in February, this year is shaping up to be the "Year of Mister Rogers." I can’t think of a better time to spread Fred Rogers’ timeless wisdom. We have a special on Mister Rogers Neighborhood coming March 6. Mister Rogers: It’s You I Like, hosted by awardwinning actor Michael Keaton, pays tribute to the much-loved program, still broadcast on many PBS stations, including Nine PBS on Mondays at 12:30 p.m. The film includes interviews with numerous celebrities who have been influenced and inspired by Fred Rogers.

As we approach the end of the Igniting the Spirit of Possibility capacity-building campaign, we thank those who have helped us raise funds to sustain our future. There is still time to contribute; learn more at nineNet.org/support. If not for your support and partnership, we could not bring you landmark programs, engage the community around early-childhood education and pathways to employment for young people, and much more, right here in St. Louis. We can all be proud of the legacy we have created. Yours truly,

Jack Galmiche President and CEO

Year of Mister Rogers Nine Network has designated 2018 the “Year of Mister Rogers.” The pioneering PBS series premiered nationally 50 years ago this past February and became an iconic and enduring landmark in the world of children’s television and beyond. Various events and activities are planned throughout the year to celebrate the legacy of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. The program debuted in 1968, and almost 900 episodes were produced by the time the show ended in August 2001. Today, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood is the longestrunning program on public television, a testament to its profound and enduring appeal to children. When the Nine Network launched the Nine PBS KIDS channel in January 2017, we increased access to award-winning PBS KIDS content, like Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, produced by the Fred Rogers Company, and inspired by Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. The free PBS KIDS service includes a TV channel, a live stream on digital platforms and an interactive gaming feature. Together, these new services support our mission to reach all children with high-quality educational content. Research confirms that PBS KIDS educational programming helps children build critical skills that enable them to find success in school and life.

A TV pioneer Fred Rogers was a TV pioneer and PBS icon. In March, we celebrate what would have been his 90th birthday. Fred McFeely Rogers was born on March 20, 1928, in Latrobe, PA, 40 miles east of Pittsburgh. Rogers 4

earned his bachelor's degree in music composition at Rollins College in Winter Park, FL, in 1951. Immediately upon graduation, he was hired by NBC television in New York as an assistant producer and later as floor director for various programs. Rogers moved back to Pennsylvania in 1953 when he was asked to develop the first program for WQED Pittsburgh. The Children's Corner was a daily, live, hour-long visit with music and puppets. Rogers served as puppeteer, composer, and organist. It was on The Children's Corner that several regulars of today's Mister Rogers' Neighborhood made their first appearances—among them, Daniel Striped Tiger, X the Owl, King Friday XIII, Henrietta Pussycat, and Lady Elaine Fairchilde. During off-duty hours, Rogers attended both the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Child Development. He graduated from the seminary and was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in 1963 with a charge to continue his work with children and families through the mass media. Later that year, Rogers was invited to create a program in Canada. It was called Misterogers. It was on this series that Rogers made his on-camera debut as the program's host. When he and his wife and two sons returned to Pittsburgh in 1966, he incorporated segments of the Canadian program into a new series which was distributed by the Eastern Educational Network. This series was called Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. In 1968 it was made available for national distribution through the National Educational Television (NET), which later became Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). Rogers wrote all of the music for Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. nineNet.org

Fred Rogers received a host of honors in his lifetime, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, induction into the Television Hall of Fame, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He was chairman of Family Communications, Inc., the nonprofit company that he formed in 1971 to produce Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. Today Family Communications, Inc., is called The Fred Rogers Company in honor of its founder. Fred Rogers died on February 27, 2003, at his home in Pittsburgh. Source: fredrogers.org

Child development focus The focus of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood is on chidren's emotional development. Its success is based on a combination of several factors, including encouraging children to feel good about themselves and encouraging an appreciation of and respect for others. You can find more about the philosophy of the series at pbs.org/parents/rogers. As creator and writer, Fred Rogers carefully structured the program to help children develop the skills they would need for learning. His whole-child approach was centered on the importance of social-emotional skills for success in school and in life, like the ability to deal with feelings, curiosity about the world, cooperation and persistence. Star-studded special Mister Rogers: It’s You I Like is a celebrity-filled, hour-long special that premieres on Nine PBS on March 6. Cast members from the groundbreaking series share their personal perspectives and insights in this new production, which pays tribute to the series, still broadcast on many PBS stations today, including the Nine Network. The program also features interviews with numerous celebrities who have been influenced and inspired by Fred Rogers, a modest man who always said, “I am not a teacher, I simply help children learn.” Michael Keaton, who worked as a stagehand and made appearances on the series in the 1970s, hosts the special. Judd Apatow, Joyce DiDonato, Whoopi Goldberg, Chris Kratt, John Lithgow, Yo-Yo Ma and son Nicholas Ma, Itzhak Perlman, Sarah Silverman, Esperanza Spalding and Caroll Spinney reveal their favorite memories from Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, while Joe Negri (“Handyman Negri”), David Newell (“Mr. McFeely”) and Joanne Rogers, Fred’s widow, share their personal stories. Also featured are performances from the archives by Tony Bennett, The Empire Brass Quintet, Hillary Hahn, Margaret Hamilton, Yo-Yo Ma and Nicholas, Wynton Marsalis and Perlman. Favorite segments, such as a visit with Koko the Gorilla, Big Bird’s appearance in the Neighborhood of Make-Believe as well as trips to the Crayola Factory and the Radio Flyer Wagon Company, are highlighted. nineNet.org

new on nine A Global Showcase of Art History SERIES EXAMINES HUMAN CREATIVITY ACROSS CULTURES. Civilizations, a new nine-part series presented in partnership with the BBC, tells the global story of art from the dawn of human history to the present day. The series begins April 17 at 7:00 p.m. and returns in June (consult May/ June nineMagazine or nineNet.org). Inspired by Civilization, Kenneth Clark’s 1969 landmark series about Western art, this bold new series will reveal the role art and the creative imagination have played in the forging of humanity itself. It will introduce a new generation to works of beauty, ingenuity and illumination created across cultures and continents. From the landscape scrolls of classical China and the sculpture of the Olmecs to African bronzes, Japanese prints and French nineNet.org

Impressionist paintings, Civilizations will explore the wealth of treasures created by cultures around the globe. Art historians, professors, writers, artists, art critics and museum directors all make contributions to the series. In nine episodes, Civilizations travels across the globe to such cultural landmarks as the great mosques of Istanbul, the ancient cities of Mesoamerica, the Buddhist caves of Ajanta in India, and the funeral site of China’s first emperor. Civilizations explores a sweeping range of topics, including the earliest human cultural artifacts and the representation of the body in art, what happens when different civilizations encounter each other, and the nature of “renaissances” around the world. Underlying the series will be an exploration of the premise that it is through the creative imagination that humanity expresses its most essential self and looks for the fundamental meaning of life. “This sweeping, visually stunning series follows the thread of creativity through centuries, weaving art and culture, history and humanity,” says Bill Gardner, Vice President, Programming and Development, PBS. “The cultural connections Civilizations makes reveal that artistic expression has been a powerful and enlightening

force since the beginning of humankind. We’re thrilled to bring viewers this expansive global showcase of art history at its finest, as only PBS can.” Using the latest film technology, Civilizations is filmed on six continents: Africa, Asia, Australasia (Australia, New Zealand, and neighboring islands in the South Pacific Ocean), Europe and North and South America. State-of-the-art drone and camera movement technology, as well as macro photography, will allow viewers to immerse themselves in the extraordinary locations and see the world’s treasures in new ways, bringing remote objects up close in order to celebrate detail, craftsmanship and artistry as never before. From the stained glass windows of Chartres Cathedral to Matisse’s cardboard cutouts, from the great dome of the Suleymaniye mosque to the paintings of the Dutch Golden Age, from Hokusai’s Wave to Monet’s Rouen Cathedral series, Civilizations goes inside some of the world’s greatest museums, historic locations, cathedrals and mosques to provide viewers special access to priceless works of art and architecture.

nine networking The Next Phase of American Graduate Nine’s national leadership role in American Graduate began in 2011, with bringing awareness to the goal set nationally to reach a high school graduation rate of 90% by 2020. Over the past six years, public media has helped the country understand the importance of improving high school graduation rates, the barriers preventing student success, and the solutions to improving outcomes. In the next phase of American Graduate, we’re focusing on what happens after graduation. Our young people are entering a rapidly changing workforce. With baby-boomers retiring at a rate of 10,000 people per day, according to a Pew Research Center study, and rapid advances in technology, employers are scrambling to fill open positions.

With our network of trusted partners, we’re committed to aligning our public media resources to help prepare our young people for the workforce of tomorrow.

of the St. Louis Workforce report. Young people in our region poised to enter the workforce are uniquely positioned to take advantage of these in-demand jobs. There are ample opportunities to grow the skillsets and opportunities through advanced training.

In conversations with leaders across the region, we have consistently heard about the critical need to change the perception of the careers that drive our regional economy. Both locally and nationally, middle-skills jobs have become a key component of our workforce. Middle-skills jobs are those that require education or training after high school, but not a four-year degree. These jobs include nursing, the trades, and computer support specialists.

Through American Graduate: Getting to Work, we’ll be sharing resources available to job seekers that will help them overcome barriers that are impacting their ability to access viable, in-demand jobs. Together with our partners, we will share stories that will help highlight and honor the trades and middle-skills jobs.

Middle skills jobs are the only segment of the workforce where the demand for workers exceeds the number of people trained to fill these jobs, according to St. Louis Community College’s 2017 State

We will ensure that our community is aware of pathways into wellpaying jobs that don’t necessarily require a four-year degree. Join us as we explore and share stories of the future face of work.

Raymond H. Wittcoff, the last surviving founder of KETC/Channel 9, died January 2, 2018, at his home in Phoenix. Ray was 96 years old. Ray Wittcoff was known to many in the St. Louis region for his civic leadership through the founding of Channel 9, his long-time board leadership at Jewish Hospital and the eventual merger of Barnes and Jewish hospitals. He also developed some of the early iconic buildings in downtown St. Louis. Ray was recently featured in the Nine Network's historical documentary on the revitalization of the Central West End. In 1954 Ray led a group of St. Louisans making application to the FCC for an educational television license through the St. Louis Educational Television Commission (ETC). The ETC eventually became the call letters of KETC going on air under Ray’s leadership in September 1954. KETC became one of the first public television stations to go on air not connected with a university, school system or associated with any one institution.

You could be my neighbor or live in my neighborhood,” says Claire, a resident of Shaw. “It’s great to be able to talk to people that love the same shows as you do,” says Abby, an Edwardsville resident. “We get to put names to faces by volunteering," says Claire. “A lot of St. Louis is connected through Channel Nine.” Learn more at nineNet.org/support.
