Dear Friends, Most of our viewers know us by what they see on television. Many know us by their online experiences on nineNet.org and through our initiative websites. And, we’ve acquired thousands of friends and followers through social media. We also meet many people in our region at events, partner meetings and community gatherings. What some might not realize is that we also get to know our community right here at the Nine Network. We have become a place where many people come to learn, share ideas and work together to strengthen our region. Our location in Grand Center also enables us to make an important contribution to the vibrancy of an already diverse and exciting neighborhood. Soon St. Louis will be the only city in America where four independent public media organizations—the Nine Network, the St. Louis Beacon, St. Louis Public Radio and KDHX radio—work in proximity to one another in an arts district. This summer, when St. Louis Public Radio becomes our next-door neighbor, we hope to move forward on our joint venture to create a unique and dynamic outdoor public media environment in the space that lies

between us. Surrounded by arts organizations, educational institutions and performance halls, the space will offer boundless opportunities for collaborations on large format video projections, interactive digital media experiences, innovative exhibitions, performances and more. As we continue to raise funds for what we’re calling our Public Media Commons, I invite you to come take a look and share our vision. If you plan to be in the neighborhood, give us a call. We would enjoy giving you a tour of the Nine Network. Remember, there’s more to the Nine Network than meets the eye. With your support, we’re building a stronger, more creative and more innovative community. And you, our members, are vital to our work. Thank you! Yours truly,

PUBLIC MEDIA

A dynamic outdoor Public Media Commons in Grand Center would attract visitors of all ages to share experiences in an innovative urban space.

COMMONS More than 1.5 million people visit Grand Center each year. The district we like to call our “neighborhood” is often referred to as the “cultural soul” of our community, attracting people of all ages to diverse experiences. We are rightfully proud that Grand Center encompasses some of our nation’s leading visual and performing arts venues as well as a broad array of arts organizations and educational institutions. Soon, Grand Center also will become a public media “hub” with the distinction of being the only place in the United States where four independent public media organizations work in close proximity to one another. This summer St. Louis Public Radio and University of Missouri-St. Louis media classes move into their new building next door to the Nine Network and the St. Louis Beacon. Later this year, KDHX radio will move into its new home a few blocks away on Olive. And, of course, St. Louis University, Harris-Stowe State University and several elementary and secondary schools are also part of the Grand Center community. This unique juncture of public media, education and the arts has sparked an unprecedented opportunity for collaboration. And the area between the Nine Network and the new St. Louis Public nineNet.org

...the only place in the United States where four independent public media organizations work in close proximity to one another.

Radio building offers an ideal space. Surrounded by arts organizations, educational institutions, performance halls and public media, the space is at the nexus of the Grand Center community. It is an open common area perfectly suited to shared experiences, creative interactivity and new collaborations. It also affords the opportunity to utilize the digital resources of public media in expansive new ways. We envision a dynamic digital outdoor environment, known as the Public Media Commons,

which would be unlike any other place in the country. The Commons would be emblematic of public media, providing a focal point for art, culture and public dialogue with large-screen projections, performance stages, and new uses for interactive digital technologies. Offering entertainment and innovation in an outdoor urban setting, the interactive environment would make it a must-see attraction for anyone visiting our city. The activities and content experienced in the Commons would be new and different every day, particularly the media content projected onto the walls and available through mobile devices. The Commons would also open to a view of the Nine Network studios in action. Development of a Public Media Commons has become an integral and leading component of the Grand Center Cultural District plan, which is being led by Grand Center, Inc. under the consultation of Donald J. Stastny, founder and CEO

of Portland’s StrastnyBrun Architects, Inc. and competition manager of the Gateway Arch grounds redesign. The Public Media Commons would help Grand Center build a sense of community, use the arts as a bridge to cultural diversity, embrace teaching and learning as part of the identity of the neighborhood and spark future investments in the district. As fundraising and planning for the Public Media Commons continue, we invite the community to share in our vision for this unique and innovative urban destination. We also encourage everyone to visit the proposed site. Let us know if you would like to learn more about our plans for the Commons. And please let us know if you would like to make a major contribution to the funding. We have received approximately $2.7 million in contributions toward the $5 million estimated cost of the Public Media Commons. The opportunity to complete the funding is available!

Johnny Carson’s estate grants first-time-ever access to American Masters for a definitive documentary about the King of Late Night.

Johnny Carson was seen by more people on more occasions than anyone else in American history. Over the course of 30 years, 4,531 episodes and 23,000 guests, he became a fixture of national life and a part of the cultural landscape. In a 2007 TV Land/Entertainment Weekly poll, Americans voted Carson the greatest icon in the history of television. 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of Carson taking over The Tonight Show from Jack Paar and the 20th anniversary of his retirement. In May, Emmy-winning filmmaker Peter Jones explores Carson’s life, career, complexities and contradictions in the two-hour documentary American Masters: Johnny Carson: King of Late Night. Narrated by two-time Oscar-winner Kevin Spacey, the film features 45 original interviews with Carson’s friends, family and colleagues, including his second wife, Joanne, Dick Cavett, Doc Severinsen and other The Tonight Show staff. Performers who appeared, or began their careers, on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson are also interviewed, including David Letterman, Jay Leno, Mel Brooks, Jerry Seinfeld, Ray Romano, Drew Carey, Garry Shandling, Steve Martin, Angie Dickinson, Ellen DeGeneres, Carl Reiner, Don Rickles, Bob Newhart, Conan O’Brien, Joan Rivers and David Steinberg.

For 15 years Jones wrote an annual letter to Carson requesting his cooperation in the production of a documentary. His appeals went unanswered until 2003, when he received a telephone call from Carson himself: “You write a damn fine

letter, Peter, but I don’t have anything more to say.” Following Carson’s death in 2005, Jones directed his letters to Carson’s nephew, Jeff Sotzing, who controls his uncle’s archives. Finally, in 2010, Sotzing agreed to cooperate and the Carson Entertainment Group granted unprecedented access to Johnny’s personal and professional archives, including family photo albums, home movies, memorabilia, and all existing episodes of The Tonight Show from 1962 until his retirement in 1992. His simple reason: “I didn’t want people to forget Johnny Carson.” Quite possibly the biggest star that television has ever produced, Carson commanded, at his peak, a nightly audience of 16 million viewers—double the current audience of Leno and Letterman combined. Rarely giving interviews, Carson chose to remain a very private man whose public persona made him an American superstar. He once revealed, “I can get in front of an audience and be in control. I suppose it’s manipulation. Offstage, I’m aloof because I’m not very comfortable.” American Masters: Johnny Carson: King of Late Night explores this dichotomy and enigma, unearthing clues about Carson’s childhood, early days in the business, and personal and professional life. “Carson has been one of the holy grails for documentary filmmakers, but there’s such a protective veil surrounding Johnny that I was beginning to wonder if this would ever happen,” says Jones, whose films for PBS include the Peabody Awardcontinued on page 8

winning Inventing LA: The Chandlers and Their Times (2009) and American Masters: Goldwyn (2001). “I am thrilled that the 20-year process of Johnny Carson taking his rightful place in American Masters has come to fruition at last!” remarks Susan Lacy, series creator and executive producer. “There is no one who touched more entertainment careers than Johnny. All of us are actually in his debt to some degree.”

TUNE IN: American Masters: Johnny Carson: King of Late Night will be broadcast Monday, May 14 at 8:00 p.m. and rebroadcast Tuesday, May 15 at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 16 at 2:00 a.m., Thursday, May 17 at 1:00 a.m. and Saturday, May 19 at 8:00 p.m.

Johnny Carson, born October 23, 1925, grew up in Norfolk, Nebraska. The future “King of Late Night Television” began to perform at an early age to mask his insecurity and shyness. When he was 14, he performed a magic act as “The Great Carsoni” for local civic groups, earning three dollars for each appearance. At 20, as an ensign serving aboard the USS Pennsylvania during World War II, Johnny entertained his fellow sailors with magic and comedy. After the war, he studied broadcasting at the University of Nebraska and worked as an announcer, writer and host for WOW radio and television in Omaha. In 1950, Carson landed a job as staff announcer for television station KNXT in Los Angeles. He soon hosted a local program, Carson’s Cellar, which led to a writing stint on The Red Skelton Show. One night, Skelton ran into a breakaway door and suffered a concussion during rehearsal. Johnny went on in Red’s place, opening with a monologue he had put together while driving to the studio. Johnny’s idol Jack Benny said afterwards, “You better watch that Carson kid. The kid is great... .” In 1955, he hosted the short-lived Johnny Carson Show for CBS. Its failure taught Carson to fiercely protect his material

from the meddling of network brass. Two years later, Johnny moved to ABC as host of a new daytime game show, Who Do You Trust?, where he was teamed with announcer Ed McMahon. After a successful five-year run, Carson departed the game show to take over for Jack Paar as host of NBC’s late night flagship The Tonight Show. Carson’s cool wit and temperament were perfectly suited for late night. As host of The Tonight Show, he quickly became a fixture of national life and captured the zeitgeist with his blend of comedy and conversation. He hosted the nightly program for three decades, creating the template for the modern late-night talk show. He became the highest-paid entertainer in television and also its most powerful, capable of launching the careers of comedians like Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno, who first came to prominence when Carson showcased their talents before a national audience. The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson also brought in nearly 20 percent of NBC’s annual profits. On May 22, 1992, Carson’s final appearance as the host of The Tonight Show attracted an estimated 50 million viewers, the largest audience in late-night television history. Carson gave only a handful of interviews during his 40-year career, choosing to remain a very private man whose public persona made his among the most famous faces in America. After retirement, he retreated from the public eye. He passed away from emphysema on January 23, 2005. He was 79 years old. Carson won four Emmy Awards, hosted the Oscars five times, was inducted into the TV Academy’s Hall of Fame in 1987, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1992, and was given a Kennedy Center Honor in 1993.  nineNet.org

Nine Networking American Graduate Extends Reach To improve graduation rates across the country—that’s the goal of American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen, a national initiative led by the Nine Network. Since launching in St. Louis in November, the initiative has burgeoned to encompass 68 public broadcasting stations in 21 markets and involving 600 partners nationwide.

It Happen to share their success stories with each other, with their partners and with those who are eager to lend their support to the initiative. The website is a valuable resource for information, innovative ideas and volunteer opportunities. It features a national map pinpointing local communities that are making a difference. The national site also serves as a template for and conduit to local stations’ own American Graduate sites.

Several of America SCORES’ students are featured online and on air sharing poems they’ve written to communicate pride in graduating and to encourage others to stay in school. Nine’s local partners have identified barriers to graduation and formed working groups to focus on solutions. Stories on Living St. Louis and short on-air spots are raising understanding of the challenges faced by students, teachers, parents and the community as a whole. In an interview by Nine for the American Graduate initiative, George Paz, CEO of Express Scripts and chairman of Civic Progress’ education committee, says, “As a country our greatest asset is our people and through history that has always been the case. We’ve got to invest in our people to keep our country great. .. .We do need to make sure that we give [kids] the opportunity to prosper and do well.” American Graduate: Let's Make It Happen is a national public media initiative funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

In April, parents, teenagers, teachers and area professionals who work with youth beset by mental health issues gathered at the Nine Network for Youth at Risk Town Hall. The broadcast gave everyone the opportunity to ask questions, share experiences and offer expertise about issues related to young people struggling with homelessness, abuse and neglect, and addiction. The town hall was scheduled to precede National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day on May 9.

Health Response hotline reports a three-fold increase in calls seeking help (from November 2010 to November 2011), with 96 percent of follow-up participants accepting referral information. Also, 10 additional agencies signed on to be a part of Youth at Risk, for a total of 23 involved in the work. Youth at Risk is a Nine Network initiative in partnership with the St. Louis County Children’s Service Fund with funding from the Brown Sisters Foundation and the Mary Ranken Jordan and Ettie A. Jordan Charitable Foundation.

Student Volunteers Every semester during the school year, the Nine Network welcomes the help of a special group of volunteers, students from the Ladue School District. Twice a week for the past six years, up to four high school students

Early last year, the Nine Network launched Youth at Risk: Finding Solutions Together, an initiative to address mental health issues faced by young people in our region. The purpose of the initiative is to reduce stigmas associated with mental illness, to increase understanding of mental health issues, and to ensure that youth receive needed services. As part of Youth at Risk, Nine has broadcast Living St. Louis stories and multiple shorter pieces about mental health problems focusing on causes, treatment programs and how mental health problems among youth affect the greater community. Nine Academy opened its doors to agencies that work with youth to teach them how to use video to tell the stories of the issues they deal with daily. Nine’s Youth at Risk website, youthatriskstl.org, offers connections to resources. Nine’s Youth at Risk efforts are making an impact in the community. Since the initiative started, the Behavioral

For their part, the teenagers like to get away from school for a few hours, and they like having a sense of accomplishment. “They are so proud of themselves,” says Zornes. “Just the other day one girl pointed to a huge tray of envelopes she filled and said, ‘Look at all I did.’ She loves coming here. She said, ‘It’s good for my self esteem.’”

Parents appreciate the education their children are getting, too, according to Zornes. “They like that their kids are learning to be grown up and to see them rise to the occasion.”

When she’s not helping her student volunteers, Zornes volunteers herself by manning Nine’s booth at the St. Louis Art Fair. She and her husband are long-time members of Nine because they like Nine’s programming, but also because of what Nine brings to the community. “We love coming here every week,” Zornes says. “The area we work in is very warm and welcoming, and the staff is so nice. The hour-long specials begin on May 7 at 7:00 p.m. when Living St. Louis presents Beethoven and the Boys, a performance by the St. Louis Symphony conducted by Ward Stare and New York City-based Project Trio. The program is rebroadcast on May 12 at 9:30 a.m. On May 21 at 7:00 p.m. (repeated May 26 at 10:30 a.m.), Living St. Louis airs the finals of the second annual St. Louis Teen Talent Showcase Competition. The contest began in March with 118 acts comprised of high-school-age students from throughout the metro area. Performers included singers, dancers, musicians and comedians. Judges pared the field down to 32

semifinalists, who competed in April for one of 11 spots in the finals. The Nine Network furnished some of the competitors with hand-held cameras so they could make a record of their thoughts and experiences while preparing for such a large competition. At stake are scholarships, the chance to display their talents before performing arts professionals, bookings at area venues, and of course, the honor of winning. For the Living St. Louis broadcast, their Flip camera footage will be combined with scenes from the semifinals at DeSmet Jesuit High School and their full performance during the final competition on stage at the Fox Theatre in Grand Center. Among the judges are actor Ken Page, actress Phyllis Smith (The Office) and The Rep’s Artistic Director Steven Woolf. Says Allegheny College President James Mullen Jr., “Every week Mr. Brooks and Mr. Shields come together on PBS NewsHour to vigorously debate the issues of the day, respecting each other as they do so. They demonstrate that civility does not require one to be tepid. Mr. Brooks proudly argues from the right; Mr. Shields from the left. But they advocate their views with steadfast civility.”

Funny that Allegheny College in Pennsylvania chose an election year to introduce its Prize for Civility in Public Life. There were no arguments about their decision from the folks at PBS NewsHour. The program’s regular political commentators, syndicated columnist Mark Shields and The New York Times columnist David Brooks, became the inaugural recipients of the award in February.

During his career, Glazier worked as a journalist for the Springfield Daily News and the Wichita Eagle, and taught journalism at the University of Wichita. When he returned to Springfield in 1953, he became involved in the fledgling television nineNet.org

industry with Springfield Public Schools’ educational television broadcasts. That led to a position as associate director of television and radio with the Methodist Church in Nashville, Tennessee, and then to general manager of KETC/Channel 9 from 1965 to 1976. During his tenure here, Glazier presided over a prolific period of television production. Nine produced a large number of cultural, educational and instructional specials and series, some of which were distributed nationally to other stations. Among the titles produced under Glazier were the wildly popular The Letter People; Umbrella, a series Robert Glazier at his desk. of household/ craft tips distributed by PBS; Along the River, a 15-part series about MissouriIllinois history; award-winning episodes of the national Inside/Out series; Lex Singularis, a series for junior high school students about legal concepts; and The Greatest Earth on Show, a comedy-dramadebate-documentary series about overpopulation.

Nine to Grow On Can You Tell Me How to Get to Sesamgade? Bangladeshi children watch Simsipur while in Tanzania they enjoy Kilimani Sesame. In nearly 150 locations around the world, what started as Sesame Street in the United States is reaching children globally with critical, playful and engaging lessons tailored to specific cultures. Within the past year, Sesame Workshop debuted programs in three additional countries: Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Sesame Square in Nigeria debuted in May 2011 to address a broad range of developmental needs in one of Africa’s

largest and most diverse countries. It reaches viewers across all segments of society with lessons on ABCs and 123s, girls’ empowerment, and health and hygiene—all crucial in a country where early childhood education is scarce and diseases such as malaria and HIV/AIDS are all too common. Bagch-e-Simsim (Sesame Garden) debuted on December 1 in Afghanistan. Only a small percentage of the 5 million children under age 5 in the country have a formal early childhood education. The program delivers lessons on literacy, math and life skills, with a special emphasis on girls’ education and cultural awareness. Sim Sim Hamara in Pakistan premiered in 2011 to bring high-quality early education to a population spanning 90 districts and five languages. With unique characters and educational messages tailored to local needs, the program focuses on literacy, math, cognitive skills and health in a context that promotes gender equity and social inclusion.

Of course in the United States, Sesame Street continues to enrich the lives of preschool children as it has since 1969. (For instance, take a look at this fun fact: Recent research with U.S. kids shows that when a healthy food is promoted by a Sesame character, children eat 31 percent more of it than when it’s promoted by an unknown character.) Sesame Street airs Monday–Friday at 9:00 a.m. on Nine PBS.

Kami (L) and Zobi are two characters on Nigeria’s version of Sesame Street.

Keeping an Irish Kitchen Clodagh’s Irish Food Trails, a new series airing Saturdays at 2:30 p.m. beginning June 30, takes viewers on a culinary journey across the Emerald Isle. In her American television debut, accomplished chef, food journalist and award-winning cookbook author Clodagh McKenna travels the length and breadth of Ireland—from Valentia Island in Kerry to Fanad Head in Donegal—in search of the best food, farmers’ markets and more. Along the way, McKenna meets the passionate artisans, fishermen and farmers responsible for producing, catching and growing some of the country’s most delicious fare. McKenna then enlists the help of local chefs to demonstrate accessible, family-friendly recipes. McKenna’s travels highlight some of Ireland’s most striking geography and intriguing destinations, including Skelligs Rocks where a 6th-century monastery is perched 600 feet above the sea, Dingle’s sea caves and Fastnet Rock’s famous lighthouse.
