Dear Friends, I hope you have had the opportunity to watch the powerful documentary Eyes on the Prize airing on Nine World since late January. It was produced by Henry Hampton, who grew up in St. Louis and graduated from Washington University. The importance of this acclaimed documentary and its relevance to our own times inspired us to air the documentary again May 6 and 7 in back-to-back episodes simulcast on Nine PBS and in the Public Media Commons. We’ll begin with a special episode of Stay Tuned broadcast live from the Public Media Commons. And I’m pleased to tell you that one of our guests on the program will be Judi Hampton, Henry Hampton’s sister and president of Blackside, Inc., the production company he founded. I invite you learn more about the documentary and our related events in this issue’s cover feature. Throughout the year we host many events and develop engaging ways to expand on the value of our content. Our events also help us get to know you and give us opportunities to partner with other community organizations to build a stronger community. The mandate of the Nine Network since our inception in 1954 has been to use media for the public good — free of any commercial or political influence. And our core purpose has always been to strengthen civic life in the St. Louis region. Parents trust us to provide quality learning experiences for their children. And adults come to us for everything from unbiased news to stimulating exploration of the world and entertaining drama. Television is amazing. It can inform us, inspire us, engage us and touch our hearts. But public television is even more amazing. It is a value we provide people of all ages, regardless of their ability to pay. Supporting public media is a true act of philanthropy. We’re in the final phase of a $50 million campaign to assure that we have the technology, facilities and sustainability we need to meet the future head on. I encourage you to read a short article in this issue to learn more about the campaign, how your support has been essential to our success, and what your support will enable us to achieve in the future. And please let us know if you have any questions. Yours truly,

Jack Galmiche President and CEO Nine Network of Public Media

HISTORY IS FRONT AND CENTER THREE DECADES SINCE ITS PREMIERE, THE GROUNDBREAKING CIVIL RIGHTS DOCUMENTARY, EYES ON THE PRIZE I AND II, RETURNS TO INFORM A NEW GENERATION. he ordinary men and women whose extraordinary actions launched the civil rights movement kept their eyes on the prize, and by doing so, changed the fabric of American life. See and hear the stories that created the movement during the Eyes on the Prize 14-hour marathon event May 6 and 7. The marathon presentation of this critically acclaimed documentary begins on Friday, May 6 at 7:00 p.m. on Nine PBS and in the Public Media Commons, with a special Stay Tuned live from the Pubic Media Commons. Stay Tuned will be followed by Eyes on the Prize: Then and Now, a new 30-minute special that revisits, reframes and explores the 4

ongoing struggle for equality. Then, the entire documentary airs Friday night and Saturday. With the current national spotlight on issues of race and inequality—as well as the marking of the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act and the 60th anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott—the time is right for this series about the nation’s civil rights history to be front and center as part of an essential dialogue. America continues to struggle with the recurring crisis of race-related violence; Eyes on the Prize I and II can provide perspective for a new generation and be a touchstone for citizens who lived through the decades that the films depict. Journalist and writer Al Letson hosts new

introductions to each episode. Hailed as “required watching” (New York Magazine) and “indispensable” (Time), Eyes on the Prize recounts the fight to end decades of discrimination and segregation. It is the story of the people— young and old, male and female, northern and southern—who, compelled by a meeting of conscience and circumstance, worked to eradicate a world where whites and blacks could not go to the same school, ride the same bus, vote in the same election or participate equally in society. It was a world in which peaceful demonstrators were met with resistance and brutality—in short, a reality that is now nearly incomprehensible to many young Americans. nineNet.org

v HENRY HAMPTON'S LEGACY

Executive producer Henry Hampton (1940-1998) was a St. Louis native and 1961 graduate of Washington University. In 1968, he established his Boston-based company Blackside, Inc., which became the largest African-American-owned film production company of its time. The materials used to create Blackside’s films are now housed in the film archive at WU’s West Campus Library. The 35,000-plus items in the Henry Hampton Collection include film and videotape (570 hours of original footage and 730 hours of stock footage), photographs, scripts, storyboards, producers’ notes, interviews, music, narration, posters, study guides, books and other materials. Hampton set out to share his vision of what he called “the remarkable human drama that was the Civil Rights Movement” through the Eyes on the Prize documentary and a book of the same title by Juan Williams. In recent years, a number of key figures who appear in the films (including the Reverend Ralph Abernathy, a leader of the Montgomery bus boycott; Coretta Scott King, wife of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., and an activist in her own right; Kwame Turé, also known as Stokely Carmichael, leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee; and George Wallace, 1960s Alabama governor who resisted integration) have died, making this record of their testimony all the more valuable. Narrated by music artist Aloe Blacc, Eyes on the Prize: Then and Now features Eyes on the Prize filmmakers, present-day activists, human rights leaders and scholars. The special revisits key historical moments and explores commonalities with current national events. nineNet.org

Nine Networking Nine Network Celebrates 2016 Graduates A milestone like high school graduation is special time for a young person. As part of our ongoing work on American Graduate, we invite you to join us in celebrating 2016 high school graduates by participating in a campaign to recognize their achievements. We’re asking you— parents, family, friends and graduating students—to share photos and well wishes on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using #STLClass2016. Nine Network will share those as a salute to our region’s high school graduates and their bright futures. Learn more at nineNet.org/AmericanGraduate. The initiative has now become a national movement.

More than 128 public radio and television stations to date have joined forces with more than 1,700 partners and at-risk schools across 48 states and in one territory to improve outcomes for young people. Through Nine’s leadership

of American Graduate, we’ve helped create a new model for how public media organizations can engage their communities. American Graduate is supported by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).

The Nine Network will screen Tennessee Williams’ renowned drama A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) in the Public Media Commons on Friday, May 13, as part of Grand Center’s Tennessee Williams Festival May 11–15. The annual festival pays homage to the city's favorite playwright—Tennessee Williams. Williams’ father’s job took the family to St. Louis from Mississippi when he was eight years old. He attended University City High School and studied at Washington University for two years beginning in 1936, where he wrote the play Me, Vashya. His ties to St. Louis include his interment in 1983 at Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis. The festival will take place on stages in the Grand Center and Central West End areas. Highlights from the festival include a Hirschfeld Exhibition Unveiling and An Evening with Olympia Dukakis. With a focus on St. Louis, the TWFSTL will offer something for all tastes—theatrical productions, movies, a visual art exhibition, readings, panel discussions, a tour, and live music. Nine Networking Meet the Board Brendan Lind Brendan Lind was a PBS kid. “I was raised on public television,” Lind says. “I grew up watching Wishbone, Arthur, Ken Burns’ documentaries and Brother Cadfael.”

Now, things have come full circle, with Lind giving back to public television by serving on the Nine Network board of directors. “Public television has made a positive impact in my life,” Lind says. “As an adult I got to know Nine through its local programs and engagement in the community.” That spurred Lind last year to join the board, where he serves on the Development Committee. “I am excited to help support this effort to provide higher quality public television and engagement in the broader St. Louis community,” he says. Lind, who grew up in Idaho, moved to St. Louis in 2010 to attend Washington University, where he graduated with honors with majors in economics and anthropology along with a minor in philosophy. At 28, he is the youngest member of Nine’s board. But his age belies his credentials. Last year, the St. Louis Business Journal named Lind to its list of "30 Under 30" future business leaders in our region.

Still a lover of public television programs, Lind enjoys watching PBS NewsHour, Nova, and Nine’s local production Stay Tuned. “The Nine Network provides quality trusted programming to the community,” Lind says. “This programming informs, entertains and educates.”

Nine Networking Nine Network Beer Launch Event In April a group of Nine Network members worked together at 4 Hands Brewing to create a unique Nine Network beer. Next, we will conduct a social media campaign to name our beer. Then, on June 25, in an evening event, we will launch the new beer in the Public Media Commons. The event is open to those who become members at the $100 level. Each attendee will also receive a gift pack of the beer and a one-pint co-branded Nine Network/4 Hands Brewing glass. Go to nineNet.org/Beer-Launch for this special membership opportunity.

Remember the Nine Network on Give STL Day The Nine Network is pleased to serve as media sponsor for Give STL Day in support of the many outstanding nonprofit organizations in our region. But remember, while the Nine Network of Public Media provides unrivaled television free of charge to people of all ages across the broad St. Louis region, we are much more than outstanding television. Our commitment to our region means that we work directly with individuals and organizations in our community to help promote dialogue, keep us engaged in what’s important and celebrate our achievements. The Nine Network is a nonprofit organization that receives only 10% of its support from government sources. Approximately 90% of our support comes from individuals, businesses and foundations right here in our community. We appreciate the contributions of all of our supporters and encourage everyone to remember the value of the Nine Network with a special gift on GiveSTL Day. nineNet.org

New on Nine Everyday People Engage with Science Three ordinary people try to figure out why they exist at all. This is just one of the questions explored in a new six-part science series presented and narrated by renowned theoretical physicist Prof. Stephen Hawking. In each episode of Genius by Stephen Hawking, a different group of people will be challenged to think like the greatest scientific minds in history to solve some of humanity’s most enduring questions. “It’s a fun show that tries to find out if ordinary people are smart enough to think like the greatest minds who ever lived. Being an optimist, I think they will,” says Prof. Stephen Hawking. Through the use of large-scale experiments and remarkable demonstrations, the program decodes the mysteries of evolutionary biology, astrophysics and quantum mechanics, solving questions like “Why am I here?,” “Are we alone?” and “Can we travel through time?” “Genius” takes its participants (and viewers at home) back in time — to ancient Greece, where Eratosthenes calculated the Earth’s circumference — and to more recent history and such thinkers as Edward Hubble,

who uncovered and established the distances between our planet and the vast galaxies throughout the universe. With its premise of proving that ordinary people can grasp how history’s greatest scientific discoveries came about, “Genius” is directly aligned with what the Nine Network hopes to achieve through all of its programming — inspiring audiences to explore the world around them. The series puts complex scientific concepts into easily digestible layman’s terms. The experiments are spectacular and illustrate some of the most important ideas from some of the greatest minds in history in highly engaging ways. This series hopes to

encourage more minds around the globe to engage with the scientific challenges of tomorrow. According to production company Bigger Bang TV, “…science is a source for some of the most awe-inspiring, imaginative stories ever conceived. …‘Genius’ will be uniquely thoughtprovoking entertainment, revisiting some of history’s notable scientific breakthroughs through the eyes of everyday people.” WATCH: Genius by Stephen Hawking Wednesdays, May 18 and May 25, 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.

New Healthy Cooking Series Launches Hosted by chef, nutritionist, and New York Times best-selling author Ellie Krieger, Ellie’s Real Good Food is designed to help real people get the most out of life by cooking in the “sweet spot,” the convergence where delicious and healthy meet. The 13-part cooking series offers solutions for every meal of the week, with healthy, time-saving 18

strategies for menu planning, food shopping and cooking. In each episode, Ellie answers a call for help in addressing a real-life food challenge, whether it’s at home or in the workplace, offering delicious recipes and practical tips along the way. In addition, she highlights the concept of volumetrics—the method of incorporating lowcalorie, high-volume ingredients into recipes—to make them more filling. In this first season, the James Beard Award cookbook author helps a

single working mom rein in her takeout habit; shows viewers how to incorporate the joys of chocolate into everyday menus by choosing quality over quantity; and creates “no brainer” recipes for breakfast, including a peanut butter and grapes wrap, avocado toast with egg, and mini frittatas with leeks and asparagus. Community of Supporters The Nine Network is engaged in a $50 million campaign, Igniting the Spirit of Possibility, to build our capacity for the future. Gifts to the campaign may include new bequests from donors who notify the Nine Network, in writing, of their plans. Knowledge of your legacy contribution would significantly advance our campaign and encourage support for the future of public media. It’s helpful, but not necessary, to make your name public.

Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month

The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants.

Memorial Day and Holocaust Remembrance Day

Memorial Day programming, starting May 21 and ending June 1, includes Navy SEALs — Their Untold Story. Despite the widespread attention paid to the Navy SEALs (Sea, Air and Land) since they killed Osama bin Laden, the story of how these clandestine warriors evolved in response to changing threats — from WWII to the War on Terror — and how their extraordinary abilities shaped U.S. and world history, has remained untold. Navy SEALs — Their Untold Story airs Saturday, May 28 at 7 p.m. Two Holocaust Remembrance Day programs will be aired on Nine World: Refuge: Stories of the Selfhelp Home (Tuesday, May 3 at 6 p.m.) and Making Light in Terezin (Thursday, May 5 at 5 p.m.).

Celebrate our Asian-Pacific citizens with more than 50 programs that shine the spotlight on them. Throughout May, many of America ReFramed's films concentrate on experiences of Asian Americans, including A Winning Girl, which tells the dynamic story of an elite judo and wrestling phenomenon from Hawaii. A Winning Girl airs Tuesday, May 3, at 7 p.m. Independent Lens joins the celebration by airing: In Football We Trust (Saturday, May 14 at 7 p.m.), the story behind the Polynesian pipeline to the NFL, and Brakeless (Tuesday, May 17 at 6 p.m.), about a 2005 Japanese commuter train crash. From the series Global Voices, Miss Nikki and the Tiger Girls (Sunday, May 15 at 9 p.m.) is a portrait of a spirited young Australian band manager as she tries to empower Myanmar's first all-girl band to speak out in one of the world's most repressive regimes. Donnybrook See what happens when five quick-witted, highly opinionated St. Louis journalists disagree on tough topics. This is not another dry, tame talk show. It’s a high-energy, no-holds-barred debate on the week’s news topics. With host Charlie Brennan, the panel of regulars tackles tough issues and controversial subjects. The opinions are well-informed and widely divergent. Donnybrook, now in its 29th year, is just one of numerous locally produced programs on the Nine Network. POV’s 2016 season opens with The Return. The passage of Proposition 36 marked the first time in U.S. history that citizens voted to shorten sentences of those currently incarcerated. Within days, the reintegration of thousands of “lifers” was underway. The Return examines this unprecedented reform through the eyes of those on the front lines—prisoners suddenly freed, families turned upside down, reentry providers helping navigate complex transitions and attorneys and judges wrestling with an untested law. At a moment of reckoning on mass incarceration, what can California’s experiment teach the nation? Sunday, June 19, 10:30 p.m.

As a math teacher and Sunday school teacher, Doris Wolff inspired her students to learn and to acquire values that would be important throughout their lives. When she provided for the Nine Network through her will, she touched even more lives than those who had the fortune of being her students.

“The future belongs, not to those who have the most, but to those who do the most with what they have.”

—Eugene P. Odum

Leave the gift of enlightenment, truth and joy. Leave a gift in your will to the Nine Network. You can make sure that the next generation lives in the age of enlightened television—that they delight in learning with quality programs like Sesame Street and Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, and that they become adults who are alive to the arts, their community, and the natural world around them.
