Dear Friends, In late March, the U.S. Congress passed the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2018, which provides funds for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting's advance appropriation, for upgrading and replacing the public broadcasting interconnection system, and for the Department of Education's Ready to Learn program. (Read more on Nine's Ready to Learn work in the cover story on page 4.) The legislation reaffirms that federal funding for public media is an investment that continues to deliver proven value and service to the American people. I want to thank Congress for its longstanding support. The federal appropriation is the foundation of a uniquely American publicprivate partnership, providing essential funding for locally owned and operated public television (including the Nine Network) and radio stations across the country. Only through the federal appropriation can public media serve every American wherever they live, whatever their economic circumstance, free of charge and commercial free. We are overwhelmed and grateful by the generous show of support from our community during our March Membership Drive. We raised $295,000 from 2,182 people, including 873 new donors. Our recently published 2017 annual report to the community is available online at nineNet.org/about/reports-and-policies. It's a wonderful review of the Nine Network's quality content and shared experiences from last year. Our foray into on-demand viewing continues to grow. In late March, the eight-part drama, Jamestown, premiered on Nine PBS Passport. From the producers of Downton Abbey, this new dramatic series follows the lives of three women who decide to leave England behind for a new life in 17th-century America.

If you have not activated Nine Passport, go to nineNet.org/passport to get started. This member benefit lets you watch PBS programs on your own schedule. We know we have a lot of Anglophiles in our viewing audience as evidenced by the popularity of our British dramas. You will be happy to learn that we are going all out in covering the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, beginning with a five-day limited series, Royal Wedding Watch, leading up the May 19 wedding. Live coverage of the royal wedding begins at 3:30 a.m. on May 19. With the approval of the Federal Communications Commission, we have made a substantial investment to increase our signal strength and reach more households in our coverage area. See page 13 for more on our channel reconfiguration. The quality content and shared experiences we provide would not be possible without those who have contributed to our Igniting the Spirit of Possibility capacity building campaign. As we approach the end of the campaign, I thank those who have helped us raise funds and I invite those who have not to join us to ensure that Nine Network is here for future generations. Our campaign is scheduled to end June 30, so time is of the essence. Please contact me to learn more about how you can be part of this important campaign, only the second in Nine's 60-plus-year history. Yours truly,

Jack Galmiche President and CEO nineMagazine | May–June 2018

COMMITTED TO

young learners Public media, quality educational content and community engagement add up to improving early learning outcomes across the St. Louis region. No other media company does more to help America's children succeed than PBS. By leveraging the power of media across platforms—TV, online, mobile and more— Nine PBS KIDS increases the odds that all the children in our region succeed in school and in life. The Public Broadcasting Act of 1967 facilitated a legacy that would educate and inspire an informed citizenry, particularly children and other underserved audiences, and remain free from commercial influence. Since the Nine Network's inception in 1954 as a television station dedicated to the education of the St. Louis community, we have taken our charge to educate children seriously. In fact, among our first forays into local productions were iconic children's programming like The Finder, Room Nine, and The Letter People.

Nine PBS KIDS Channel The goal in launching the 24/7 channel was to expand access to curriculum-based and scientifically proven educational content. PBS KIDS and the Nine Network launched the Nine PBS KIDS channel and live stream in January 2017. Nine PBS KIDS gives everyone access to high-quality PBS content whenever and wherever, including early evening and after-school hours when viewing among families is high. The channel is available as a live stream on nineNet.org/ninepbskids and on the free PBS KIDS video app for mobile and tablet devices. We also began hosting Family Night on Nine PBS KIDS channel and live stream, every Friday from 6–8:00 p.m. to encourage kids and parents to tune in together to movie specials and themed programming events. Each Friday's special programming repeats on Saturday and Sunday evenings during the same timeframe. On June 15, Nine PBS KIDS will be running a 24/7 Wild Kratts marathon. 4

Webster Groves Teacher Named PBS Digital Innovator All-Star The PBS Digital Innovator program is also part of PBS's education initiatives. Chantell Mason from Steger Sixth Grade Center in the Webster Groves School District was selected as one of 30 educators from across the country for the first PBS Digital Innovator All-Star Program. Mason was previously recognized as a PBS Digital Innovator in 2016. A leader in integrating technology and digital media into the classroom, Mason's students have created prototypes using basic engineering and design thinking skills to solve real-world problems, and run podcast and social media channels. She also provides training for Ready to Learn facilitators.

Nine PBS LearningMedia for Educators Another resource is geared to educators. Nine PBS LearningMedia provides pre-K–12 educators with free, standards-aligned, high-quality digital content and professional development opportunities. Nine PBS LearningMedia has over 100,000 videos, images, lesson plans and resources from PBS programs and from expert contributors like the National Archives and NASA. The service is free to every pre-K–12 educator in the region.

Ready to Learn Over 20,000 children under six live in the St. Louis City viewing area alone, with more than 40% living in poverty. The consequences of disparities in access begin to appear almost at birth. In 2017, St. Louis-based Vision for Children at Risk identified early childhood development and quality education as two fundamental needs in our region. Nine Network has partnered with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and PBS in the Ready to Learn Initiative, supported by the U.S. Department of Education.

The Ready to Learn program is an innovative public media project that supports the math, literacy and science skills of our nation's youngest learners, especially those who come from low-income households. Recent research shows that the program helps children prepare for school and learn inside and outside the classroom. A national leader in community engagement, Nine works within communities to engage teachers and families in early science and literacy through PBS KIDS resources so children can benefit from our trusted and proven educational assets.

Storytime in the Commons Storytime in the Commons was established in 2016 to connect families to our early childhood programming. Our free reading program engages families in early learning, school readiness and family fun. It combines literacy with activities in an enriching environment. In 2018, Storytime in the Commons returns bigger and better than ever with more PBS KIDS® characters and themes focused on learning and character building. Find more information on page 8. Family Creative Learning Experiences Family Creative Learning sessions are an example of the research-based Ready to Learn educational experiences. It is a multigenerational, hands-on family engagement model designed to support science and literacy development among children and families in community-based settings. These resources include multisession, sequenced experiences that are built to be modular and flexible enough to be adaptable to a wide variety of communities and contexts. All of the resources come packed with full activity plans, supporting materials for facilitators, links to related video and digital media, and additional take-home materials to support ongoing family engagement.

PBS KIDS Read This summer the annual PBS KIDS Summer Learning Initiative will link to The Great American Read campaign (see page 14). PBS KIDS Read will provide reading activities through a special content collection on PBS KIDS for Parents (pbs.org/parents) and social media. Stay tuned for more information. Many American children have limited early opportunities to explore literacy, language, math, science and the arts. Cultural, geographic and economic barriers stand between them and important learning opportunities. With the support of our community, Nine Network is helping young learners overcome these barriers, expanding access to these worlds, giving children the tools they need to learn reading, science and math, providing them with a greater chance to reach their full potential.

Hands-on Learning Sessions in Community At the end of January, Nine joined 300-plus first graders at the Normandy Schools Collaborative for a Reading Wonderland to promote literacy with Super Why. In early February, we facilitated the Ruff Ruffman Family Creative Learning series at the Lewis and Clark branch library in North St. Louis County, where participants had fun using survey methodologies. Later in February, Family Creative Learning sessions at the St. Louis County Library included coping with the weather and testing out apps on the PBS KIDS Playtime Pad. In North St. Louis County, our facilitators led a session on the principles of friction. The many partners of the Nine Network's handson sessions include Parents as Teachers, St. Louis Crisis Nursery, and Microsoft.

New Digital Series Features Local Artists The Nine Network remains committed to bringing you the best of local and global arts. We've recently expanded our offerings on digital platforms with our new, original digital series, Pieces. New episodes featuring local artists are released each month on nineNet. org/Pieces. The series' name, Pieces, refers to the works of art and the pieces of the artist's core that are reflected in each piece. Rather than focusing on processes or accomplishments, interview questions highlight what drives the artist to create the work and what success as an artist looks like. The series, produced by Megan Grisolano, highlights the "why" rather than the "what" or "how." Find episodes on inspiring local artists at nineNet.org/pieces.

Year of Mister Rogers In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, the Nine Network has designated 2018 the "Year of Mister Rogers," with special events, tie-ins and announcements. May 1 marks the 47th anniversary of the day Mister Rogers went to Washington to address Congress on the need to support national public television. His moving speech to the U.S. Senate is credited with saving CPB funding and can still be found online. An encore presentation of the March special Mister Rogers: It's You I Like will air Thursday, June 7, at 8:00 p.m. The star-studded special features interviews with cast members from the groundbreaking series and celebrities who have been influenced by Fred Rogers. Michael Keaton, who worked as a stagehand and appeared on the series in the1970s, hosts the special. Called "a gentle documentary for adults who need a hug" by Variety, Won't You Be My Neighbor debuts in select theaters June 8. From Oscarwinning director Morgan Neville (20 Feet from Stardom), the documentary provides an intimate look at the man behind the cardigan. The documentary will air in early 2019 on Nine PBS. Follow the Nine Network on Facebook and Instagram for #WednesdayWisdom, a selection of Fred Rogers' quotes of encouragement, all year long.

Nine at Art on the Square Nine Network has more than 700 hours of arts and cultural programming each year. And, we go beyond broadcast to present digital-first arts content, like our new Pieces series (see page 10), and host experiences that showcase local and national arts and artists. We are proud to be a media partner for Art on the Square, May 18-20. Art on the Square is a juried fine art

show located in downtown Belleville, Illinois. Now in its 17th year, Art on the Square has consistently been ranked one of the best art fairs in the nation. Visit artonthesquare.com for more information. Stop by to say "hi" and pickup information on the new Dancing in the Commons series, Nine PBS programming, and Nine PBS KIDS resources.

About Our Channel Reconfiguration On June 1st we will be transmitting on a new signal. For most viewers, the changes and possible interruptions will go unnoticed. The need to reconfigure our transmission was the result of the Federal Communications Commission's "spectrum" auction to help improve wireless services across the country. Because of the changes, Nine Network has taken the opportunity to increase the power of our signal. These changes will only affect those of you who obtain TV service over the air with an antenna; if you subscribe to a cable or satellite provider, they will make any necessary changes for you. You will not need to buy a new TV or purchase a converter box like you might have done during the transition to digital television in 2009. If you notice our channel missing, you will need to rescan for available TV stations. We will still be known as channels 9.1 (Nine PBS), 9.2 (Nine PBS KIDS), 9.3 (Nine World), and 9.4 (Nine Create). For howto information, visit the guide and instructional video at fcc.gov/rescan. Thanks to additional funding provided, in part, by the Monsanto Fund, we are able to not only meet the basic federal requirement, but go a step further to substantially improve our signal strength. Consult nineNet.org for further information.

new on nine Help Choose America's Best-Loved Book The Great American Read

explores and celebrates the diversity of thought, perspective and experiences of America through the lens of our most treasured literary classics and contemporary titles. The Great American Read launches with a two-hour special event on Tuesday, May 22, at 7:00 p.m. on Nine PBS. The series culminates this fall with the results of the first-ever national vote to choose America's best-loved book. Television personality and journalist Meredith Vieira will host the series. "It is a privilege to partner with PBS to bring The Great American Read to viewers across the country," says Vieira. "The power of reading is extraordinary — it allows us to escape to new worlds, introduces us to a diverse range of people, opens our minds to different ideas, and allows us to keep learning no matter our age or background." 14 May–June 2018 | nineMagazine

One hundred books were selected by the American public, chosen from a demographically representative national survey, and an advisory panel of literary professionals. Over the course of 15 weeks this summer, viewers can read and vote on favorite works of fiction. The series returns September 11 with additional episodes exploring the nominated books through themes including "Heroes," "Villains and Monsters," "Who Am I?," "What We Do for Love," and "Other Worlds." It will conclude with an exciting finale and countdown to America's best-loved book on October 23. Voting starts at nineNet.org/read when the launch episode premieres on May 22, and will remain open through the fall broadcasts.

As summer turns to fall, voting will close and America's top 10 books will be revealed, counting down to America's best-loved in the final episode of the series. We can't wait to see what you choose! The film follows 11-time Jeopardy! winner Arthur Chu, who won almost $300,000. By using an unconventional game strategy, the former insurance analyst amassed tens of thousands of fans and haters on Twitter. In an effort to put his 15 minutes of TV fame to good use, Arthur aspires to become a public figure. By addressing topics such as racism and sexism, particularly in gaming culture, he debunks Asian American stereotypes.

The old home movies from Silas Fung from 1936 to 1951, purchased by the filmmaker in an online bidding war, offer a little-seen glimpse into how a Chinese family embraced American customs. Fung was a first-generation Chinese American commercial artist who had a passion for filming home movies. Restoring Fung's films took years, but the family's archive of everyday life remains intact
