Senator Claire McCaskill (left) shows her support for the Nine Network by attending Antiques Road Show in St. Louis with Jack Galmiche on July 8.
Dear Friends, As you may know, the fiscal calendar drew to a close on June 30. When I look back on the period from July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017, I’m struck by the remarkable demonstrations of support the Nine Network received from its members, donors and partners. We saw four consecutive quarters of growth for total viewers of local programming, prime-time viewing and online video viewing. Membership also rose steadily over the course of the fiscal year, with 28 percent of our members choosing to become sustaining members to show their support on an ongoing basis. In January, Lesli Rotenberg, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Children’s Media and Education at PBS, joined us to celebrate the launch of the new Nine PBS KIDS channel. This new channel, plus a great deal of other educational initiatives, including local American Graduate, Ready to Learn, and Storytime in the Commons, meant that it was another year of strong support for education in the St. Louis community. Strengthening civic engagement is another core principle of public media. With this past fiscal year encompassing both a national and a municipal election, we had ample opportunity to do just that. Debate viewing parties in the Public Media Commons and a television broadcast of the St. Louis Mayoral Forum were opportunities for the Nine Network to involve St. Louisans in decisions that matter to them. Culture complements our programming schedule the same way it enriches our daily lives. Our viewers know they can flip on
Nine Create for 24 hours of programming that inspires them to eat well, live beautifully and celebrate diversity. Over the past year, we also brought celebrations of culture from television into the community. America’s Test Kitchen paid our studio a visit to show us some “kitchen hacks,” and Taste & See with partner Feast TV had back-to-back soldout summers. Because no tribute to dining culture in St. Louis would be complete without a cold brew, the Nine Network gathered teams of beer enthusiasts to concoct its second-ever beer, On Cue, which was released in August. Finally, it was nothing less than a banner year for local programming. Gentlemen of Vision was screened at the St. Louis International Film Festival and the highly prestigious AFI DOCS festival in our nation’s capital. Two documentaries, Wish You Were Here: A Century of Missouri State Parks and A Place Worth Saving: The Story of the Central West End, were released to great acclaim. Accompanying our history of the Central West End is a collection of interviews, available to all free online, which contains more than 10 hours of content in five chapters. It is the most comprehensive history of the neighborhood’s revitalization in existence. It was a successful (and busy) fiscal year by any measure. And, if a visit from Antiques Roadshow in early FY18 is any indication, the next should be just as memorable. Yours truly,
Jack Galmiche President and CEO

DOCUMENTARY FINDS AN ECHO IN THE PRESENT The Vietnam War, directed by acclaimed filmmakers Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, will premiere September 17, on Nine PBS. The first five episodes will air nightly from Sunday, September 17, through Thursday, September 21, and the final five episodes will air nightly from Sunday, September 24, through Thursday, September 28. Each episode will premiere at 7:00 p.m. The series will be rebroadcast throughout the fall. The epic documentary avoids clichés with fresh testimony from nearly 100 witnesses, including many Americans who fought in the war and others who opposed it, as well as combatants and civilians from North and South Vietnam. “The Vietnam War was a decade of agony that took the lives of more than 58,000 Americans,” Burns says. “Not since the Civil War have we as a country been so torn apart. There wasn’t an American alive then who wasn’t affected in some way—from those who fought and sacrificed in the war, to families of service members and POWs, to those who protested the war in open conflict with their government and fellow citizens. More than 40 years after it ended, we can’t forget Vietnam, and we are still arguing about why it went wrong, who was to blame and whether it was all worth it.”

September–October 2017 | nineMagazine
Ten years in the making, the series brings the war and the chaotic era it encompassed viscerally to life. Written by Geoffrey C. Ward, produced by Sarah Botstein, Novick and Burns, it includes rarely seen, digitally re-mastered archival footage from sources around the globe, photographs taken by some of the most celebrated photojournalists of the 20th century, historic television broadcasts, evocative home movies, and revelatory audio recordings from inside the Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon administrations. “We are all searching for some meaning in this terrible tragedy. Ken and I have tried to shed new light on the war by looking at it from the bottom up, the top down and from all sides,” says Novick. “In addition to dozens of Americans who shared their stories, we interviewed many Vietnamese on both the winning and losing sides, and were surprised to learn that the war remains as painful and unresolved for them as it is for us. Within this almost incomprehensibly destructive event, we discovered profound, universal human truths, as well as uncanny resonances with recent events.”
MUSIC THAT DEFINED AN ERA The Vietnam War features new, original music written and recorded by Academy Award-winning composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. The film also features new music arranged and performed by Grammy Award-winning cellist Yo-Yo Ma and The Silk Road Ensemble. nineNet.org
A NEW 10-PART, 18-HOUR DOCUMENTARY FILM SERIES TELLS THE EPIC STORY OF THE VIETNAM WAR FOR A NEW GENERATION THROUGH FIRSTHAND ACCOUNTS. The series also features more than 120 popular songs that defined the era, including tracks from The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Simon & Garfunkel, Janis Joplin, Ben E. King, Phil Ochs, Donovan, Johnny Cash, Barry McGuire, Buffalo Springfield, The Byrds, Otis Redding, Santana, Joni Mitchell, Nina Simone, The Temptations, Booker T. and the M.G.s, Pete Seeger and more. “Ever since The Civil War, Ken and Lynn have been behind some of the most important documentary films ever shown on television, films that have in fact made television history and created national conversations around who we are as Americans,” says Beth Hoppe, chief programming executive and general manager, general audience programming, PBS. The Vietnam War stands out as an unmatched documentary achievement about one of the most transformative periods in modern American history. …Our goal is to reach as many people as possible to spark a national discussion about the issues raised in the series, in a way that only public television can.”
STREAMING AND PASSPORT VIEWING On September 17, concurrent with the broadcast premiere, the first five episodes of The Vietnam War will be available for streaming on nineNet.org, PBS.org and PBS apps for iOS, Android, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Chromecast, and the final five episodes will be available beginning September 24. All episodes will remain accessible until the series begins its rebroadcast. During the rebroadcast period, each episode will be available to stream for two weeks. Nine Network members with Passport, a donor benefit that offers extended access to a rich library of public television programming, can view the entire series (all 10 episodes) beginning September 17. The series will also be available in Spanish and Vietnamese on streaming. Accompanying the series will be a companion book, available on September 5. The Blu-ray and DVD will be released on September 19 on shopPBS.org.

Committed to fulfilling our role We have recently heard from viewers about our scheduling of programs, particularly two recent PBS programs released nationally, the second season of The Tunnel and the fourth season of The Great British Baking Show. First, we regret any confusion with our schedule. We develop it months in advance. This includes the programs in the national PBS schedule, our award-winning local programming, and programs from other sources, such as American Public Television and independent producers. PBS will occasionally promote programs at the national level that member stations may schedule at any time. Sometimes the Nine Network is not able to immediately air these programs concurrently with the national schedule, and we air them later. Our members are able to access the majority of national programs via our video-on-demand service, Passport. Those familiar with other popular video streaming services will be happy to know that we also offer a similar service. Programs not running on the Nine Network at the time they are released by PBS can be viewed on-demand two weeks after their initial, national release date. nineNet.org
Many platforms There is good reason for our name, Nine Network of Public Media, to be distinct from our station’s call letters. The Nine Network actually broadcasts four channels, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In addition to our flagship channel Nine PBS, Nine Create broadcasts lifestyle programming, Nine World news and international affairs, and Nine PBS KIDS. In addition to these four channels, the Nine Network offers a number of digital resources through our social media channels, digital-first content online, and our extensive web resources. These platforms offer a network of content and programs comprising the Nine Network—no longer one single channel.
Statements of support Underwriting credits for public television are different than commercial advertising. While public broadcasting as an industry is facing real and severe funding threats, turning to a commercial model is neither feasible nor desirable. FCC guidelines forbid our station, as a public broadcaster, from running any
commercial advertising. Underwriting credits, which we do run, are statements of support for public media from community institutions. Underwriting spots on our air may not contain, as per FCC regulations, details like pricing, product comparisons, or calls-to-action. Because of noncommercial regulations, pledge drives provide a key source of funding for the Nine Network. While we do receive some federal funding, it makes up less than 10 percent of our annual operating budget. Viewer contributions are crucial to our continued existence and pledge drives are a long-standing, proven model for these contributions. They typically run four times per year, in March, June, August and late November to early December. The Nine Network is intensely proud of our role as a community-licensed, public television station dedicated to broadcasting quality, informative, and educational content. We’re committed to fulfilling this role in the St. Louis region. We welcome comments from our members and viewers. Our supporters enable us to offer the highest quality programs and content throughout the region. Contact us at letters@ketc.org.

Nine Networking Nine to Broadcast Special on Atwood A half-hour Living St. Louis special on the St. Louis Literary Award ceremony and conversation with acclaimed writer Margaret Atwood (pictured) will air on Monday, October 9 at 9:00 p.m. on Nine PBS. The Saint Louis University Library Associates has selected Atwood as the recipient of the 2017 St. Louis Literary Award. With its 50-year list of illustrious winners, including Tennessee Williams, Joan Didion and August Wilson, the St. Louis Literary Award has become one of the most prestigious literary awards in the country. The award ceremony is Tuesday, September 19, at The Sheldon Concert Hall, and is free and open to the public. In a career spanning more than 50 years, Margaret Atwood has
demonstrated a remarkable literary range in moving seamlessly from genre to genre. Atwood is best known for her works of fiction, including The Handmaid’s Tale, Cat’s Eye, and Oryx and Crake. Atwood’s most recent novel, Hag-Seed, is a retelling of Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Atwood
has also written numerous books of poetry and nonfiction. Born in Ottawa, Margaret Atwood is a native of Toronto and has received significant honors over her long career, including the Booker Prize, Ms. Magazine Woman of the Year,

Arthur C. Clarke Award for Best Science Fiction, the PEN Pinter Award, and the Canadian Booksellers’ Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2017, Ms. Atwood will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Book Critics Circle. “We believe that Margaret Atwood deserves to be part of the pantheon of writers who have received the St. Louis Literary Award because her incredible body of work has played such an intimate role in the cultural fabric of our country. Ms. Atwood’s collective body of prose and poetry makes her the perfect choice to receive the award in 2017,” notes Edward Scott Ibur, chair of the Literary Award Selection Committee. New on Nine PBS is the original home of cooking and still offers the very best in food and cooking. This September, two new cooking series and a new season of an old favorite will debut on Nine PBS.
Cook's Country A brand-new season of Cook’s Country (pictured right) premieres September 2 with new hosts Julia Collin Davison and Bridget Lancaster. Season 10 includes 13 episodes of foolproof recipes for classic American dishes and everyday favorites. Pork and pierogi, spicy and sour for supper, bourbon and broccoli for the grill, and southern discoveries are just a few of the new episodes in Season 10. Cook’s Country Saturdays at 1:30 p.m., beginning September 2
Cross-cultural culinary mash-ups Cookbook authors and culinarians Marilyn and Sheila Brass—the Brass Sisters known as “The Food Flirts”— are passionate food explorers of a certain age on a mission to tackle their culinary bucket list one bite at a time. In each episode, the Bostonbased ladies “flirt” their way into chefs’ kitchens to uncover ethnically unique and delicious foods, then head home to experiment with the recipes themselves, creating cross-cultural culinary mash-ups that viewers can try at home. The first two pilot episodes follow the ladies through mash-up adventures in which a “modern” burger mixes an Indian dosa with a cheeseburger and a recipe for pastrami, ramen noodle and kugel. The sisters’ fanciful

Future episodes find the Flirts working culinary magic with a baklava-crust milk tart, curried golden raisin and cashew rugelach, and “Bunny Chow,” pasticcio bread bowls with turmeric hollandaise. The remaining four episodes of the season are scheduled for summer 2018. The Food Flirts Wednesday, September 6, 13, 7:30 p.m., with repeats Thursday, September 7, 14 at 10:30 p.m.
Kimball’s new series debuts The test cooks of Christopher Kimball’s Milk Street (above, right) search the world over for techniques that can
add a little kick, and convenience, to everyday American cooking. Christopher Kimball’s Milk Street Television follows the journey from first bite to kitchen-tested recipe. The series is filmed across the world—the first season includes Thailand, Mexico, Peru and London—and in their Boston-based studio.

Robert Bly: A Thousand Years of Joy A moving portrait of one of America's most celebrated and revolutionary poets of the last half-century. The film showcases Bly's development as a writer with an unswerving belief in the importance of poetry both to his own life and to American culture in general. A Thousand Years of Joy charts Bly's singular path from a mid-western farmer's son to radical anti-Vietnam War activist to "wild man" of the 1990s men's movement and author of the New York Times best-seller Iron John: A Book about Men. Ninety percent of Americans want to age at home, but many of them have to rely on paid care workers because their families can’t provide the support they need.
