Dear Friends, Our Strategic Plan set a course for the future of the Nine Network that would take us from a single-channel public television station to a four-channel, multiple platform public media organization poised to strengthen the St. Louis region. And we realized that we could achieve great things for our region if we applied our resources in partnership with the community that has for so long given us its trust and support. Our new identity as the Nine Network of Public Media signaled our intention to provide our community with a network of public media resources. But we also envisioned ourselves as a catalyst for collaboration, generating networks of community partners working together to strengthen our region. Our partnerships have shown us that we are part of a community of individuals, businesses, foundations and organizations as dedicated to the welfare of our region as we are. And they have shown us that we are, in fact, better together. In a relatively short time, we have seen remarkable results. With our partners we are addressing critical issues that affect young people and their families as well as the health and economy of our region. We are very proud that our community collaborations are having such a positive impact. We are also proud of the collaborations that informed our upcoming documentary

Homeland: Immigration in America. The documentary was rooted in an extensive engagement initiative involving thousands of individuals, businesses and organizations throughout Missouri. Our documentary will air on PBS stations across the country in July. And you’re invited to attend the St. Louis premiere at the Tivoli on July 8 at 4:00 p.m. Now, as we move into the public phase of our capacity-building campaign, I am convinced that the campaign is rightly named “Igniting the Spirit of Possibility.” This is a campaign that will enable us to ignite the spirit of St. Louis, inspiring all of us to work together to achieve the best possible outcomes for our region. And it could come at no better time. We have just welcomed another public media partner to Grand Center. Our colleagues at St. Louis Public Radio are now our next-door neighbors! Thank you for your support and I hope you will contribute to the campaign. You can help us ignite the spirit of possibility in St. Louis. Yours truly,

Jack Galmiche President and CEO Nine Network of Public Media

Homeland Immigration in America

Homeland: Immigration in America is a three-hour documentary series that explores one of the most polarizing issues facing America today. A PBS Election 2012 national special, the series is narrated by Ray Suarez, senior correspondent for PBS NewsHour, and produced by the Nine Network of Public Media in St. Louis. hile immigration is a national issue this election year, it plays out daily in the lives of people in communities across the country. Homeland: Immigration in America, a three-hour documentary series produced by the Nine Network, explores the politics and people on all sides of immigration and reveals the complexity of this election-year issue. Narrated by Ray Suarez, PBS NewsHour senior correspondent, Homeland presents contemporary stories of immigrants and those who confront them, those who give them help and those who craft legislation that affects them. Their stories reveal the complex economic, political, personal and cultural dilemmas that are often portrayed as simple choices of right or wrong, legal or illegal. Immigration is not just a short-term border state issue; it is a national issue with long-term consequences for communities throughout America. The series was acquired by PBS and offered for broadcast in July to public television stations nationwide. Immigration is one of the most polarizing issues facing America today. It’s a story of new immigrants who find themselves walking a fine line between access to and expulsion from the American dream. It’s also a story of American citizens who wonder if legal and illegal immigrants threaten their way

of life. These intertwined and complex issues may have a significant effect on the choices people make when they go to the polls in November. Says Nine Network President and CEO Jack Galmiche, “We are a nation of immigrants, but issues of immigration are dividing our country. We hope the Homeland documentary will help lead to better understanding and productive dialogue.”

Walk the red carpet for the Nine Network’s grand premiere of Homeland: Immigration in America. The 90-minute free preview of the documentary series takes place Sunday, July 8 at 4:00 p.m. at the Tivoli Theatre, 6350 Delmar Blvd. in the University City Loop. Ray Suarez of PBS NewsHour, the documentary’s narrator, will be on hand as will others who are involved with the initiative. Tickets will be available at the door and at the Tivoli box office. More information is available at nineNet.org.

The documentary’s content is rooted in an extensive engagement initiative online and in the community throughout the St. Louis region and across the state to uncover key immigration issues. The community engagement process involved thousands of individuals, hundreds of organizations and the many immigrant groups in Missouri who shared stories of what it means to be an immigrant in 21st century America. “Public engagement informed our approach to the documentary series and uncovered the compelling human stories that we hope will move viewers to a better understanding of immigration issues,” says Nine Network Senior Vice President of Community Engagement Amy Shaw. “We believe that public engagement before and after the documentary series will deepen the appreciation of immigration on all sides.” Homeland travels to small towns and big cities that are dealing with immigration, such as tiny Monett, Missouri, where immigrants fuel the poultry processing industry. The series also meets with experts around the country, from Los Angeles, where UCLA professor Abel Valenzuela talks about the impact of immigrant labor, to Washington, continued on page 7

D.C., where policy makers wrestle with the concerns of humanitarian, political and business interests. Among those interviewed are Michael Chertoff, former secretary of Homeland Security under President George W. Bush; former governor and U.N. ambassador Bill Richardson (D-New Mexico); Juan Williams, political analyst, FOX News; Edward Alden, senior fellow, Council on Foreign Relations; and Sasha Chanoff, executive director, Mapendo International, an organization dedicated to refugee rescue, relief and resettlement in Africa and the U.S. Part one of Homeland: Immigration in America begins with Refugees, which takes viewers to the heart of our humanitarian position as a refuge for those fleeing violence, disaster, war and persecution around the world. The stories in this hour illustrate the forces and factors that can lead refugees to a life of stability and success, or isolation, welfare and homelessness. The second episode, Jobs, looks at the spectrum of immigrant jobs and the complex maze of rules, regulations, caps and quotas challenging our country’s competitiveness at many levels. Among the people included in this episode are a Taiwanese scientist, educated in the U.S., who is working on a cure for an incurable illness while searching for an employer to sponsor her visa; and immigrant workers in a sleepy Ozark town who have brought a much-needed economic turnaround but also language barriers and cultural clashes. The final hour, Enforcement, cuts through the heated rhetoric to explore how communities and our nation struggle to enforce inconsistent immigration policies. A pivotal story in this episode shows why two Kansas City beat cops have adopted a “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy toward legal status, knowing that aggressive enforcement threatens to break community trust when illegal and legal immigrants live side by side, often in the same family.

TUNE IN The three-part series Homeland: Immigration in America will air on Nine PBS Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m. beginning July 11; Fridays at 2:00 a.m. beginning July 13; and Sundays at 1:00 p.m. beginning July 15. Nine Networking Celebrities Boost Young St. Louis Poets In April, bestselling authors Ridley Pearson and Amy Sklansky, Grammywinning producer Alonzo Lee, country songwriter Dave Berg and Lance Berkman of the St. Louis Cardinals lent their star power to area youngsters. The celebrities participated in a poetry and music event, hosted by KTRS radio personality McGraw Milhaven at the Sheldon Concert Hall, to benefit America SCORES St. Louis, a non-profit youth development program and Nine Network partner in our American Graduate initiative. Living St. Louis will feature excerpts from the event, Celebrity Voices, on Monday, July 2 at 7:30 p.m. (repeated Saturday, July 7 at 3:30 p.m.). To prepare for Celebrity Voices, St. Louis students who practice creative writing as part of the America

SCORES curriculum were teamed with their famous mentors to craft a poem. They performed their creations together before an appreciative audience on stage at the Sheldon. Among the pairings were Pearson and America SCORES student Aliciya, and Berg, who sang with student Triniya an original song he wrote inspired by America SCORES poetry. American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen is a national public media initiative made possible by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) to help students stay on the path to on-time high school graduation and future success. The Nine Network is leading the initiative nationwide. In addition to the Living St. Louis program, the Nine Network is broadcasting short videos featuring America SCORES youth performing their original poetry. The segments can also be seen online at nineNet.org/ tag/America-scores-st-louis.

“All of us at the Nine Network and our public media colleagues across the country have been inspired by the young people involved in America SCORES St. Louis,” says Nine Network President and CEO Jack Galmiche. “We’re also very proud to showcase their talents on Living St. Louis. The enthusiasm and determination of these young people fuels our commitment to achieve success locally and nationally with American Graduate.”

Honor for Judy Woodruff In April, PBS NewsHour senior correspondent Judy Woodruff was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, an independent policy research center founded in 1780. Later this year, 220 leaders in academia, business, public affairs, the humanities and the arts will join Woodruff at induction ceremonies.

Martha Stewart Returns to Her Roots

Maya Vision

Public television gave homemakingdecorating-cooking-gardeninglifestyle guru Martha Stewart her big break on TV in 1986. That was the year she first hit the airwaves with her special Holiday Entertaining With Martha Stewart. From there, Stewart quickly developed her own business empire with Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. Her trajectory to stardom is well known; Stewart became an icon for gracious living through her TV series, books, magazine, website and products for the home.

In Kibworth, England, Michael Wood did some digging—in archives and in the ground—to uncover British history.

the city limits of one village that has seen it all, from invading armies to fascinating cultural trends. Tiny Kibworth in Leicestershire has stood through Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Normans and Vikings, plus the Black Death, famine, civil war, the Industrial Revolution and World War II strafing raids. Present-day residents pitch in to help Wood investigate their long history using for clues archaeology, landscape, language and DNA.

Martha Stewart will be back on PBS in the fall.

More than 25 years later, Stewart is coming back to PBS. Look for Martha Stewart’s Cooking School to debut on Nine sometime in the fall.

All of England in One Town Michael Wood’s Story of England, the popular historian tells 2,000 years of British history without leaving nineNet.org

The four-part series begins Tuesday, July 3 at 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. (repeats Thursday, July 5 at 1:00 a.m. and 2:00 a.m. and Sunday, July 8 at 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.). It continues Tuesday, July 10 and 17 at 7:00 p.m. (repeated Thursday, July 12 and 19 at 1:00 a.m. and Sunday, July 15 and 22 at 2:00 p.m.). Known for telling big, exotic, historical stories, in this excerpt from the Story of England blog, Wood explains what brought him to focus on one small town. We are outside Mary’s Deli in the village of Kibworth in Leicestershire, and I am scribbling this as the camera crew gulp a quick coffee, after an early start.

After epic journeys in the Story of India, not to mention tracking Alexander through Afghanistan...this feels like something of a homecoming. ... But how did it all start? Well, I had always wanted to try to tell the whole story of English history from one place, through the eyes of the people, not the rulers. I felt sure that looking at history from this perspective would tell a completely different but no less dramatic story and one which we all could relate to. I was led to Kibworth first by its remarkable archive of historical documents. And split by the A6 on the fringe of the multiracial city of Leicester, Kibworth is emphatically today’s England in miniature. So the Story of England is the tale of one community over time, but it could be any place. Making the series started over a year ago with the Big Dig, which you’ll see in episode one. We advertised...and 250 locals turned up at the school hall for an archaeological weekend. Supervised by experts, they dug 55 test pits (the most ever done in a single place). The dig was Continued on page 10

We got Roman sherds, remarkable early and late Anglo-Saxon pottery, all the way through the Middle Ages to the debris of Georgian coaching inns, frame knitters’ workshops and even in one pit household throwouts from the 1960s! And even the children really got into it—as one of the villagers, Louise Dodds, said: “We’ve never seen the kids concentrate so hard in all our lives!” The villagers have researched in the National Archives, and we’ve gone with the high school kids on their battlefield tour to the Somme.

Nine Networking 3:00 p.m. beginning July 8. Among the most fascinating footage included in the series is some shot in 3D in 1953, which is now held by the British Film Institute. The first episode explores London, the capital of Britain’s royal life and where the young Princess Elizabeth grew up before World War II. Today it hosts ongoing traditions of the monarchy such as the opening of Parliament by the queen.

Scott Newton for KLRU

The queen’s year is driven by her diary and has been since her accession in 1952. The second episode shows her on official visits, such as to the Braemar Gathering in Scotland (which she has attended 70 times). Austin City Limits’ many years of presenting concerts by cutting-edge performers like Coldplay (pictured) earned the series a Peabody.

More From Doc Martin Between the end of season four and the debut of season five in March 2012, fans of Doc Martin waited nearly a year to discover the next chapter in Martin and Louisa’s life. Will there be more? Yes! In the spring, American Public Television, the distributor of Doc Martin in the United States, announced that actor Martin Clunes agreed to a sixth season. Like fine wine, production of a high-quality series like Doc Martin cannot be rushed; it will be available to public television stations for broadcast in late 2013. Viewers of the Nine Network should be proud to know that nationally Doc Martin ratings in St. Louis are among the highest in the country. In February, a repeat of Doc Martin locally was the highest rated show on PBS in the country.

Austin City Limits Wins Peabody Austin City Limits won a “rare institutional” Peabody Award in recognition of its body of work over 37 television seasons. The Peabody board noted that “the world’s nineNet.org

longest running live music television program” had an exceptional year in 2011 with concerts by Coldplay, Widespread Panic and Randy Newman, among others.

Part three showcases a few of the queen’s remarkable possessions, or “peculiars of the crown,” among them, Westminster Abbey, the Royal Swans, the Tower of London, the Tower of London ravens and the Channel Islands.

Altogether, PBS programs won seven Peabodys in April, more than any other media outlet. Those winners are: American Experience for, together, the three documentaries Triangle Fire, Freedom Riders and Stonewall Uprising; P.O.V., separately, for My Perestroika and StoryCorps 9/11; Independent Lens for Bhutto; American Masters for Charles and Ray Eames—The Architect and the Painter and Nova for Surviving the Tsunami.

A Royal Celebration In 2012, all eyes are on Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s second longestreigning monarch, as England marks her Diamond Jubilee. In the wake of the celebration of her 60 years as British monarch, a new four-part series offers viewers a look at the customs surrounding the monarchy. Queen & Country, hosted by British newsman Sir Trevor McDonald, airs Sundays at 7:00 p.m. beginning July 1. It is rebroadcast Tuesdays at 1:00 a.m. beginning July 3 and Sundays at

Queen & Country host Trevor McDonald (R) with Chief Yeoman Warder Alan Kingshott at the Tower of London.

The final episode follows along as the queen travels to some of the 16 realms that make up the Commonwealth. They are being asked to change the rules of succession so that a firstborn girl may inherit the crown. If approved, it will be the single biggest change to the monarchy for centuries.  nineMagazine | July–August 2012

Nine to Grow On PBS Arts Summer Festival 2012 The PBS Arts Summer Festival expands the scope and diversity of the arts on television with a multi-part weekly series that takes viewers across the country and around the world. Anna Deavere Smith (Nurse Jackie, The West Wing) hosts. The Summer Arts Festival line-up, part of PBS’ and the Nine Network’s ongoing commitment to arts content on-air and online, features films that celebrate the contributions of independent filmmakers offering an in-depth look at music, theater, art, architecture and cultural history from nearly 20 cities around the globe, including local stories from St. Louis produced by the Nine Network. It airs Fridays over seven weeks beginning June 29 at 9:00 p.m. with Mariachi High—PBS Arts, which spends a year in the life of the champion mariachi ensemble at Zapata High School in Texas.

Havana, Havana!—PBS Arts Friday, July 27, 9:00 p.m. This music-documentary vibrates with the soul and energy of African-Cuban drummers, guajira guitarists and the pulsing melodies of celebrated Cuban musician Raul Paz. Locally, explore Havana through the photographs of St. Louisan Michael Eastman.

That film is followed by: Islamic Art: Mirror of the Invisible World—PBS Arts Friday, July 6, 9:00 p.m.

Unity Productions Foundation

Narrated by actress Susan Sarandon, the 90-minute film takes viewers to nine countries and across 1,400 years of cultural history to explore the astonishing artistic and architectural riches of this ancient religion. Locally, a behind-the-scenes tour of the Saint Louis Art Museum’s world-renowned Islamic collection includes ceramics, metalwork, glass, textiles and fabrics from the Middle East, South Asia and Europe. John Leguizamo's Tales From a Ghetto Klown—PBS Arts Friday, July 13, 9:00 p.m. This profile of actor/playwright John Leguizamo looks at his unorthodox rise to success, while capturing his struggles to mount his latest one-man show. Locally, meet area actors and artists who, in their own unique styles, employ art to describe their visions of our region’s soul. Homecoming: The Kansas City Symphony Presents Joyce DiDonato—PBS Arts Friday, July 20, 9:00 p.m. A concert wrapped by documentary narratives, this special tracks the radiant, internationally celebrated mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato’s nostalgic return to her hometown, and her thrilling debut at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, after a triumphant appearance with Placido Domingo at The Metropolitan Opera in New York. Locally, Nine profiles St. Louis native Kendall Gladen, a graduate of Roosevelt High School, who will sing the title role in Carmen at Opera Theatre this summer. nineNet.org

Locally, Nine takes a look at some of the 275 works from the Saint Louis Art Museum’s permanent collection that are once again on view thanks to the institution’s ongoing building expansion. Rock Prophecies View rock ’n’ roll through the eyes of photographer Robert M. Knight. He launched his 40-year career in 1968 with a line-up of now-legendary guitar heroes—Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin—and went on to capture images of some of the greatest figures in rock history. The documentary includes interviews with Beck, Slash, Steve Vai (pictured), ZZ Top, Robert Cray, Carlos Santana, Def Leppard and many others. Friday, July 6 at 9:00 a.m., 3:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m., 8:00 p.m.; Saturday, July 7 at 1:00 a.m.; Wednesday, July 11 at 4:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.

Survival: Lives in the Balance Millions of people in the developing world, mostly children, die each year from treatable and preventable diseases. Slowly, that is beginning to change as economic growth lifts hundreds of millions of people out of extreme poverty and the circumstances known to perpetuate disease. Four one-hour films take viewers into villages in the Philippines (pictured), Uganda, Niger and Bangladesh, where people suffer from diseases and conditions long since conquered in other parts of the world. Friday, July 13 and 20 at 7:00 a.m., 8:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m., 7:00 p.m., 11:00 p.m. and midnight
