Dear Friends, The community’s support during the annual Give STL Day is an indication that our mission to ignite the spirit of possibility resonates. As a nonprofit organization, we couldn’t provide quality content and shared experiences without the support of the community we serve. Nine Network raised almost $12,000 on May 2. We sincerely appreciate your support! Because of community support, we not only met federal requirements to move our antenna frequency on Rescan Day, June 1, we were able to significantly increase our signal strength to improve reception for our viewers. The efforts to upgrade our signal will be transparent to most, but if you are having trouble tuning in to any one of our four channels, please consult page 9. Make it a “Summer of Adventure” with special themed programming in July and August. Whether it’s a food adventure with celebrity chef, Marcus Samuelsson, the Rocky Mountains, Mexico, or Australia, a world of wonder and awe awaits you on Nine PBS. At Nine, summer means that events in the Public Media Commons are in full swing. Located outside the Nine Network, the Public Media Commons serves to engage and entertain the public, which fosters a healthy community. Our new Dancing in the Commons series is a perfect example of using the space for people to engage with public media and with each other, where all are welcome. There is still time to register for the tango on August 3 at nineNet.org/dancing. Our Saturday morning Storytime in the Commons is a series that promotes early learning, school readiness and family fun. It combines literacy with activities in an enriching environment. There are still three Storytimes to come where kids can interact with characters from their favorite PBS KIDS shows.

We are committed to making a positive impact on the lives of children through curriculum-based PBS KIDS content. Given that 54% of all children nationwide do not have the opportunity to attend preschool, PBS KIDS content is a critical element of Nine’s public service mission. Nine Network broadcasts 32.5 hours of free children’s programming on Nine PBS and Nine PBS KIDS every day. Our children’s programming would not be possible without the generous financial support of the community. Please contact me to learn more about this important mission. We are also committed to being good stewards of the planet. We hosted and provided event management and marketing services for Saint Louis University’s 2018 Saint Louis Climate Summit in late April. The conference’s worldrenowned speakers explained key issues in climate science and illuminated a path forward for one of humanity’s most pressing challenges. It was inspired by Pope Francis’ convocation of leading climate scientists at the Vatican in 2014 and the pro-environment document that emerged. The summit was inspirational for all those in attendance and for Nine’s onsite team. A onehour special airs July 11 and an online archive of the presentations is at nineNet.org/archive. I hope you will watch. Yours truly,

Jack Galmiche President and CEO

SUMMER OF ADVENTURE EMBRACES ST. LOUIS LANDMARKS This summer, we presents a lineup of programs that take viewers to some of the most remarkable destinations in the U.S. and abroad, from touring the vibrant immigrant communities in American cities with Chef Marcus Samuelsson in No Passport Required to climbing to the top of the Rocky Mountains, the Himalayas and the Andes in Kingdoms of the Sky.

In addition, you can visit places where human survival is pushed to the limits in Earth’s Natural Wonders and journey to the outer regions of the remote Australian wilderness in The Outback.

As if that weren’t enough, journey deep into the depths of Mexico’s tropical rainforests in Wonders of Mexico and explore streets, monuments and modern marvels in 10 That Changed America, including two familiar sights from St. Louis. THE GATEWAY ARCH AND THE EADS BRIDGE The series 10 That Changed America explores the nation’s built environment, with three new episodes that reveal the fascinating and often untold stories behind America’s streets, monuments and modern marvels. The stories of the Gateway Arch and the Eads Bridge are told in two separate episodes. “10 That Changed America is a history series, but the subjects we tackled this season couldn’t be more current: the fate of Confederate monuments, infrastructure spending, and battles over public spaces,” said producer and writer Dan Protess, WTTW Chicago. “Many of these stories could have been ripped from today’s headlines.” From New York’s Broadway to the Hoover Dam, from Mount Rushmore to the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, join host Geoffrey Baer (pictured left) on a summer road trip across America as he meets with historians, curators, and guides who share the fascinating backstories behind the iconic streets that connect our nation, the monuments that commemorate our history, and the engineering marvels that transformed our environment and shaped the way we live. Kicking off the season on July 10 is 10 STREETS THAT CHANGED AMERICA, which reveals how streets and roads have connected the nation, divided communities, and changed the way Americans live, work, and shop. Baer traces the 400-year evolution of New York’s Broadway, from Native American road to Dutch thoroughfare, from theater district to poster child for the “complete streets” movement of the future. Other influential streets profiled include Boston Post Road, St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans, Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles, and more. 10 MONUMENTS THAT CHANGED AMERICA (July 17) explores the stories behind 10 wholly-original American monuments and the historical moments that inspired them, from the Gateway Arch to Mount Rushmore, from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to the AIDS Quilt. The episode presents the oftencontentious battles over the design of these monuments and the ongoing controversies over Confederate monuments throughout the South. Finally, 10 MODERN MARVELS THAT CHANGED AMERICA (July 24) celebrates the visionary engineers who scoffed at the laws of nature, defied the naysayers—and sometimes even gravity—by undertaking amazing feats of engineering. Each story includes a fun physics lesson and a tale of human folly: from the Eads Bridge (at left) in St. Louis to the Erie Canal, from the Transcontinental Railroad to the Interstate Highway System. “Hosting this series was like a roller coaster ride of experience and emotion,” says host Baer. “The 10 Monuments immersed me in triumphs and tragedies of every scale. The 10 Modern Marvels took me from thousands of feet in the air to deep underground, pondering the brilliance and hubris of humankind. And, as for the 10 Streets, I explored them on foot and horseback, in a covered wagon, and in an array of vintage vehicles. This journey left me in awe of the power of people to imagine and to create.” nineNet.org

A Startling Landscape PART OF THE PBS SUMMER OF ADVENTURE, THE OUTBACK

EXPLORES AUSTRALIA’S UNIQUE AND PRECIOUS NORTHWEST CORNER.

Filmed over the course of two distinct seasons, The Outback premieres Wednesdays, August 1, 8 and 15, 7:00-8:00 p.m. on Nine PBS.

July–August 2018 | nineMagazine

2018-2019 The Outback is a new three-part series that explores the people and animals of Australia’s Kimberley region in northwest Australia, a vast, rugged and remote wilderness bursting with character.

season

7-show season ticket package on sale now!

The startling landscape is so ancient that, in parts, it predates life on the planet. It can appear arid and empty, but is filled with animals that have adapted to its harsh climate. Many are nocturnal, well camouflaged or prone to secrecy, like the saltwater crocodile and delicate marsupial mice. The Outback captures the life of these animals over the course of the dramatic wet and dry seasons that dictate their cycle of life. From the Outback’s red-hot heart, to its spectacular and pristine coastline, a particular breed of people also inhabits this land. The Outback is their story, too. Indigenous custodians, with an understanding of the land, animals and seasons, work with and beside scientists sharing knowledge and interpretations of the land. Station owners and workers live together on some of the world’s most remote cattle properties, battling heat, flies and the sheer breadth of their grazing lands. Meet archaeologists stunned by rock art discoveries, wildlife “carers,” who nurture orphaned animals, gold diggers, ornithologists, dedicated volunteers and dreamers with big ideas. It’s a spectacular adventure into the life of Australia’s unique and precious northwest corner.

As large as California, Kimberley has a population of only about 40,000 people, who live alongside animals that have superbly adapted to the harsh and beautiful extremes of their habitat.

Trouble Finding Nine on Your TV?

Dancing in the Commons — Tango

June 1, 2018, was Rescan Day for viewers of Nine Network (KETC). On that day, we changed to a new frequency, which was transparent to most viewers. However, if you rely on an indoor or outdoor antenna for television, and you do not see our channel, you will need to rescan for service.

Presented by AARP in St. Louis, in partnership with the Nine Network and St. Louis Pubic Radio, join us for the final Dancing in the Commons of the season, Friday, August 3, 7–9:00 p.m.

Rescanning is also an opportunity for those who had poor or no reception in the past to pick up a strong signal from Nine to watch commercialfree, quality programming that entertains, educates, and expands your horizons.

Get into step with professional dancers from Convergence Dance and Body Center as you tango the night away.

The event takes place outdoors in the award-winning Public Media Commons, 3653 Olive Street, between the Nine Network of Public Media and St. Louis Public Radio. You must be 18 years and older to attend. There will be snacks for sale along with a cash bar. Please bring chairs for seating. Free, but registration is required at nineNet.org/dancing

If you pay a monthly fee to subscribe to a television service – such as cable or satellite – you do not need to take action. The need to change our frequency was the result of the Federal Communications Commission's "spectrum" auction to help make room for more wireless services across the country. Information about how to rescan is available at nineNet.org/rescan or Nine Network Member and Viewers Services at (314) 512-9199.

Storytime in the Commons In addition to PBS KIDS® characters, reading stories and family activities that focus on the joy of learning, Delta Dental of Missouri’s Tooth Fairy and Tooth Wizard℠, a mini recycling facility from Republic Services, and St. Louis Children’s Hospital Healthy Kids Corner will be part of each Storytime in the Commons. July 7 – Respect Others, featuring Arthur & Clifford the Big Red Dog

August 4 – Embrace Cultural Diversity, featuring WordGirl & Super Why!

September 29 – Be My Neighbor Day, featuring Daniel Tiger & Katerina Kittycat

The events are free, but registration is required at nineNet.org/Storytime. Tickets are available one month before each event.

You might notice the absence of Globe Trekker in our schedule. In late April, it was announced that Globe Trekker no longer had the rights to be distributed by American Public Television and aired by public television stations nationwide. The series premiered in April 2002 and ran for 16 years (17 seasons and more than 250 episodes). Many stations, including Nine Network, aired the program in primetime.

JULY

Carnivals have a delightful place in the American imagination, with childhood memories of family fun, fantasy, and summer love. But rising expenses and changes in U.S. labor patterns mean this national pastime is nearly extinct. The film is an inside look at the struggles of an industry trying to stay alive by employing Mexican migrant workers with a controversial visa. Tuesday, July 3, 7:00 p.m.

By Blood The film explores the impact of American Indians of African descent as they battle to regain their tribal citizenship, which has manifested into a broader conflict about race, identity, and the sovereign rights of indigenous people. The film demonstrates both sides of the battle, the shared emotional impact of the issue, and the rising urgency of the debate. Tuesday, July 24, 7:00 p.m.
