Downton’s New Era It’s now A.M.—after Matthew—and life is changing at Downton Abbey.

ownton Abbey, the mostwatched drama in PBS history, enters its fourth gripping season with viewers waiting to learn what happened after the shocking denouement of last year’s final episode. All who tuned in last season know that Matthew Crawley—heir to Downton Abbey, husband to Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery), and brand-new father to a baby boy

and successor—lies dead on a country road next to his overturned roadster. On top of this, the family is still grieving over the death in childbirth of Sybil, Mary’s youngest sister, who also left a baby behind. Season four opens six months later. Although it is the 1920s, Britain still observes mourning rituals that are almost Victorian in their solemnity. Nonetheless, the Crawleys are beginning to snap out of it: Robert,

Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville), must manage the estate without his canny son-in-law; Cora (Elizabeth McGovern) suddenly faces a staffing crisis; Violet (Dame Maggie Smith), who has seen enough tragedy, knows how to recoup quickly; Isobel (Penelope Wilton), Matthew’s mother, may never recover; Edith (Laura Carmichael), who was jilted at the altar, tempts scandal with a new beau; and Mary now finds herself the most desirable widow in Yorkshire.

Written and created by Julian Fellowes, the series’ many accolades include nine Emmys, two Golden Globes and a Screen Actors Guild Award for the ensemble cast. One measure of the popularity of Downton Abbey is in the famous visitors drawn to the production just because they’re fans. Drop ins during filming include royal sister-in-law Pippa Middleton, American actors Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis and Christopher Guest, and producer J.J. Abrams (Lost, Felicity). Another popularity gauge, of course, is viewership and social media buzz. Both have been soaring since the series launched in January 2011. Season 3 reached a record 24.1 million viewers, more than any other drama in the history of PBS. Replete with weddings, births, abandonment, financial reversal, sudden riches and equally sudden deaths, season three left critics spellbound. USA Today ranked it as a perfect four stars out of four. The Hollywood Reporter called it “an absolute pleasure to watch.” The New York Times praised it as “delightful escapism.” The celebrated final episode was the number one show of the night, beating all broadcast and cable competition in prime time. “We’d follow the Crawleys off a cliff,” wrote The Philadelphia Inquirer. “Please have Carson pack us a lunch.” Fortunately, there’s no need to jump off a precipice, because life goes on at Downton Abbey.

Masterpiece Mystery!: Sherlock

When last we saw Sherlock Holmes, he was taking a header off a hospital roof. No, wait, he was being carted off by medical staff. Or, no, wasn’t that him observing Watson at Holmes’ gravesite? Time to unravel that mystery— and start a fresh one—when new Sherlock episodes debut on Masterpiece Mystery! The intrigue starts after Downton Abbey at 9:00 p.m. on Sundays beginning January 19 (repeated Tuesdays at 3:00 a.m. beginning January 21). Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman return as Sherlock Holmes and John Watson in three new 90-minute episodes of the contemporary reinvention of the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle classic. Father Brown

Set in the 1950s in the heart of the beautiful English countryside, Father Brown stars Mark Williams as the Catholic priest who has a particular talent for solving crimes. Many years spent hearing his parishioners’ confessions have given him an uncanny insight into the origins of evil and the workings of the criminal mind. Based on the short stories by G.K. Chesterton, Father Brown is a kindly cleric who is more interested in saving souls than in bringing the guilty to justice. Father Brown discovers the truth of a crime by looking into the truth of the soul—the passions, dark secrets, hidden desires. It is set in a quintessentially English world: drawing rooms in large country houses, miles of countryside, village halls and secret gardens, as well as country fairs, railway stations and rural parish churches. Full of humor and compassion, but with a big dramatic twist each time, this series remains true to the period charm of the original character and setting while bringing a sharp contemporary edge to the storytelling. Father Brown airs Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. beginning January 11.

St. Louis at 250 As the region prepares to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founding of St. Louis on February 14, the Nine Network plans to join the festivities with commemorative programming exploring the city’s rich history. Nine is a media partner of Stl250, the organizing group for all anniversary activities, and we will contribute our historical storytelling expertise to the effort. First up on January 27 and February 3 at 7:00 p.m., Living St. Louis will devote two episodes to favorite St. Louis history segments drawn from the show. Then on February 10 at 7:00 p.m. (repeated February 16 at 11:30 p.m. and February 22 at 4:00 p.m.) is Chouteau’s Journal: In His Own Words, a half-hour special based on Auguste Chouteau’s 14-page, handwritten account of the founding of St. Louis. Producer Jim Kirchherr delves into the document, which resides at UMSL’s Mercantile Library. Generations of historians have cited the journal, which tells the story of Pierre Laclede choosing the site for the town and the teenaged Chouteau overseeing its construction, but have also questioned its accuracy and the author’s motivation for writing it. On February 13 at 9:00 p.m., Stay Tuned will focus on the past, present and future issues raised by the anniversary. 8

Living St. Louis— 10 Years and Counting

Ten years and approximately 400 episodes later, Living St. Louis is still the region’s storyteller. Now with a more sustainable once-a-week schedule, Living St. Louis continues to engage the community with interesting, well-told segments. “People come up to me all the time and say, ‘I’m from St. Louis and I had no idea there was so much going on in town,’” relates executive producer Murphy. “Our working model is unusual for television. Our producers find ideas, go into the field, research, write, edit, voice and appear on camera. We do it all. Our passion shows.” Though there is no official record, a quick tally reveals that, by November 2013, at least 773 Living St. Louis segments have been produced. The series has won 13 local Emmys and been nominated for at least double that number of awards. The program’s newest producer, Kara Vaninger, says, “It’s an honor to work on a show that has been such a beloved and valued resource to our viewers for a decade. Telling the stories of people and places in our city is consistently exciting and humbling.” She is working on a series of stories

On January 5, 2004, Living St. Louis debuted on Nine with an ambitious Monday through Wednesday broadcast schedule and a mandate to inform, educate and inspire St. Louisans by telling engaging stories about the good things happening in the region. The first episode featured Baton Bob, a Patrick Murphy story about the joyful, baton-wielding man who kept a regular dance schedule on the streets of the Central West End; a piece by Anne-Marie Berger about Lewis and Clark re-enactors; an interview by Ruth Ezell with artist and Marianist monk Brother Mel; and a visit Living St. Louis producers when the series premiered in 2004. by Jim Kirchherr

Producer Ruth Ezell, who now hosts the series, insists all Living St. Louis stories are her favorites, although one category stands above the rest: “wonderful, talented young people with lots of promise.” She adds, “Three LSL stories that immediately come to mind are the Kirkwood High School Orchestra when they travelled to New York City to perform at Carnegie Hall, the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra on its 40th anniversary, and the Cotton Club tap dance group featuring three young men who are graduates of Central Visual and Performing Arts High School.”

Murphy muses about the series’ longterm impact on the region. “We’ve been documenting many aspects of life in St. Louis every week for 10 years,” he says. “Wouldn’t it be neat to find something that comprehensive from the 1920s? And isn’t it fascinating to imagine that someday, in 30 or 40 years, a producer will rediscover our record of living in St. Louis?”

In October, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) released a report from the Everyone Graduates Center at the Johns Hopkins University School of Education confirming the impact that public media stations continue to have in helping to improve high school graduation rates. Through the American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen initiative, stations nationwide have engaged in over 1,000 partnerships with businesses, schools, faith-based and other nonprofits working together to help young people stay on the path to a high school diploma and graduate with their peers.

In Memoriam The Nine Network staff extends condolences to the family of former Nine Network board member Henry (Harry) Johnston, who passed away in October. Johnston, 77, was a longtime member of Nine with his wife, Sally, who also served on Nine’s board of directors, from 1987 to 1995. He followed her onto the board in 2006 and served until 2010. Beyond his board duties, where he was actively involved in committees on governance and development, Johnston contributed his vast knowledge of and experience with St. Louis’ arts community to the Nine Network. He will be missed.

Volunteer Lauren Erger.

Volunteering to Learn Lauren Erger has always had a passion for meeting new people and learning new things. Erger, a longtime employee of SSM Health Care, has held many different positions with the company, from medical assistant to her current role as a professional coder. She already has a communications

degree from Fontbonne University, and recently decided to take classes to acquire an additional minor in marketing. She holds certification as an EMT and in her spare time, she continually tackles remodeling projects on her home in Mehlville.

Erger became a member of Nine Network in 2008 and attended a few of Nine’s special events as a guest. There, she was drawn in by the “very warm and inviting community,” and made the commitment to also contribute her time to the station.

Despite her busy life, in 2013 Erger gladly added “Nine volunteer” to her activities. Nearly every week, she helps out during the broadcast of Stay Tuned, Nine’s live, Thursday night public affairs series. Erger says, “I enjoy learning something new about nearly any topic; therefore, all the material covered since the program began has been interesting to me.” She likes meeting the wide variety of people who are guests on the show and loves the “great energy” in the studio that comes from “impressive, spirited and enthusiastic conversation” generated by program participants. The erudite atmosphere gives her plenty of material, she says, to “spark up” her own conversations.

Although there are many reasons that she decided to volunteer, Erger says the main one is, “I find this organization to be very focused on an excellent goal, to add to or better the lives of individuals from youth to the elderly. I hope to play a part, in whatever small way, in making a contribution to their mission.” Erger has worked on many different projects during her time as a Nine Network volunteer. In addition to volunteering weekly on Stay Tuned, she has been a part of the Ignite Innovation town hall broadcast, helped staff Nine’s booth at the Belleville Art Fair and answered phones on-air during membership drives. —Amanda Christian

Nine to Grow On When Irish Chefs Are Cooking Two Saturday Morning cooking series hosted by famous Irish chefs debut in January, but despite their similar backgrounds, the two men champion opposite food philosophies. Kevin Dundon’s Modern Irish Food (10:30 a.m. beginning January 11) features easy-to-follow instructions to help viewers replicate simple Irish dishes in their own kitchens. Neven Maguire: Home Chef (11:00 a.m. beginning January 25) bucks the easy meals and simple suppers trend and instead emphasizes more challenging dishes and techniques. Dunbrody Country House Hotel, a beautiful 1830s Georgian manor located on Ireland’s southeast coast, sets the backdrop for Dundon’s series. He uses locally produced, seasonal ingredients and contemporary flavors to enhance the simplicity of beloved Irish dishes. Each episode revolves around a single theme and features five recipes—a starter, main course, dessert and side dishes.

Maguire creates a variety of dishes from his award-winning MacNean Restaurant in Blacklion, County Cavan, Ireland. He takes viewers step-by-step through complex recipes, divulging interesting trade secrets in the process. In each episode, Neven also visits other top chefs representing Michelin-starred restaurants throughout Ireland and beyond, including Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in London.

Kinky Eton Mess 4 egg whites 1¼ cups superfine sugar ½ teaspoon cornstarch ½ teaspoon white wine vinegar For the lemon curd: Grated rind and juice of 2 lemons 4 extra-large eggs 2 ⁄ 3 cup superfine sugar 1 stick cold butter, cubed To serve: 1¾ cups raspberries 1½ cups strawberries, halved Juice of ½ lemon 1–2 tablespoons basil oil

Enjoy this delightfully named recipe from the January 25 episode of Kevin Dundon's Modern Irish Food. Serves 4. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees. Line a 13 x 9-inch baking sheet or meringue tray with nonstick baking paper. Place the egg whites in a spotlessly clean bowl and whisk at full speed until stiff. Whisking more slowly, add the sugar, a little at a time. When all incorporated, add the cornstarch and vinegar and give a final whisk at high speed. The mixture should be glossy and, when turned upside-down, remain in the bowl.

While the meringue is cooling, put all the lemon curd ingredients except the butter into a heatproof bowl and place over a saucepan of simmering water. Whisk continuously by hand until the mixture thickens, then slowly whisk in the butter, piece by piece, and cook for 10–12 minutes until it thickens further. Set aside to cool.

Scoop the mixture onto the baking sheet and spread it out evenly to a thickness of about 1¼ inches. Bake for 1 hour, until the meringue is very firm to the touch but still soft in the middle. Tip: Cool in the oven with the door propped ajar.

Place the berries, lemon juice and basil oil in a bowl and toss together. To serve, lightly break up the meringue and mix with the berries and lemon curd in a presentation bowl or in 4 glasses.
