Dear Friends, Our annual Arts Are Alive at Nine event in April was an inspiring and stimulating example of the vibrancy of the arts in St. Louis. The leaders of five arts organizations presented brief talks on the value of innovation in the arts. The annual event is sponsored by PNC Bank, a significant funder of the arts. We have produced a special on the event scheduled to air Sunday, July 13, at 1:30 p.m. on Nine PBS. The Nine Network has made a major commitment to the arts. We not only provide well over 500 hours of arts programming each year, but we also partner with arts organizations to help generate greater awareness, understanding and participation in the arts. Now we have taken our commitment one step further. On September 13, the Nine Network will kick off its 60th birthday week with a major public event—the grand opening of the Public Media Commons. This dynamic outdoor space adjacent to the Nine Network will serve as an incubator for innovation and creativity as well as a community platform for shared creative experiences. The Public Media Commons is bordered by two major public media organizations in the heart of the Grand Center arts district. And we believe it is an extension of our mission of bringing St. Louis together—this time in a fusion of arts,

ideas and technology with an urban perspective. The space spans more than 9,000 square feet and is flanked on two sides by large-screen video walls two stories high—a virtual “canvas” for creative expression in the digital age. Equipped with the latest audiovisual technology, the space will encourage the community to explore what can be created and experienced in a dynamic cityscape conducive to collaboration and experimentation. Week to week throughout the year, the public will be invited to experiences ranging from largescreen video productions created by local artists to performances, films, events and audiovisual adventures that ignite wonder. The Public Media Commons also will be programmed from early morning to late evening with audiovisual features and interactive experiences. We think the opening of the Public Media Commons is a splendid way to celebrate our birthday, and I hope you will mark your calendars to join us for the party. Yours truly,

Jack Galmiche President and CEO

Warming Up

Cold Cases The clues are out there—count on the History Detectives to find them.

H

istory Detectives has always been about charting new territory, so instead of investigating objects this season the detectives are tackling a new mission: solving the biggest mysteries in American history.

In History Detectives Special Investigations, the renamed and revamped 11th season of the series, veteran detectives Tukufu Zuberi and Wes Cowan join forces with new host Kaiama Glover to ask probing questions about a single iconic mystery from America’s past. Each hour-long episode of History Detectives Special Investigations solves just one historical whodunit on a deep dive into some of the nation’s most inscrutable secrets: What caused the wreck on the Mississippi River near Memphis of the SS Sultana, one of the worst maritime disasters in U.S. history? (Coincidentally, it happened the day after Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth was killed.) What led to the mysterious vanishing of big band leader Glenn Miller during World War II? Can the detectives solve what may be the country’s first recorded serial killing, the grisly Austin Servant Girl Murders of the 1880s? And who really killed Jimmy Hoffa and why? As Cowan, Zuberi and Glover discover new evidence, sift through clues and crisscross the country in search of answers, they uncover fresh leads and information to tell some of America’s most intriguing stories from a new angle. Cowan is an independent appraiser and auctioneer, and Zuberi is a professor of sociology and the director of the Center for Africana Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Newcomer Glover is professor of literature of the French-speaking Caribbean and sub-Saharan West African cinema at Barnard College, Columbia University. In the interview below, Glover answers questions about her research, what she loves about being a History Detective, and the mystery she dreams of solving.

What’s the best thing about being a History Detective? I love interviewing the people who are closest to the history—either in their passions and interests, or in their relationships to the individuals at the center of whatever mystery we’re hoping to solve. I’m struck every time by the fact that history really does have a “heart.”

While at the Nine Network, Gateway STEM High School freshmen show support for all graduating seniors and encourage other students to follow in their footsteps.

American Graduate Helps Focus Freshmen who attend Gateway STEM High School in St. Louis receive extra support to whet their appetites for learning. Thanks to the Nine Network’s American Graduate initiative, Gateway STEM is one of only a few high schools in the country offering Story Corps U, a curriculum developed by NPR’s Story Corps that teaches college preparedness skills such as public speaking, interviewing, critical listening and writing. Toward the end of the year-long class, students get to take a fourhour field trip to the Nine Network to learn about digital media and careers in media. In May, Nine welcomed 40 students to the Nine Center for Community Engagement. While here they recorded interviews with each other and discovered the basics of video storytelling.

Beth Bender, principal at Gateway STEM, says, “Story Corps U gives [students] a voice. It lets them investigate and that’s when education is at its best. Gateway is grateful for the opportunities that Nine Network’s American Graduate initiative has provided for our students.” Learn more about StoryCorps U, Gateway STEM High School and the Nine Network’s American Graduate Initiative at nineNet. org/AmericanGraduate.

Genealogy Roadshow Coming to St. Louis Part of Genealogy Roadshow’s second season will be recorded in St. Louis! Producers of the series, which uses

science and history to help ordinary people uncover the truth behind fascinating family stories, have been scouting in St. Louis this summer and will return August 22–24 to record an episode. Through the Genealogy Roadshow application process, producers will be looking for people with great stories who want to explore unverified genealogical claims, passed down through family history. A connection to St. Louis’ past isn’t a must, but it’s a bonus, say producers. Last season the show featured participants from Nashville, Austin, Detroit and San Francisco. After participants are chosen, experts in genealogy, history and DNA will use family heirlooms, letters, pictures, historical documents and other clues to hunt down more information. These experts will enlist the help of local historians to add color and context to the investigations, ensuring every artifact and every name becomes a clue in solving the mystery. Many answers will be revealed on camera before a local audience. There will be three, 50-person audiences seated on each of two days. At press time, details were still being finalized. For the most up-to-date information about how to submit your family’s story or be a part of the Genealogy Roadshow audience, visit nineNet.org/GenealogyRoadshow.

Back at school, the students collected 160 signatures from their classmates pledging to graduate and presented them to their teachers. 8

Water Matters July and August are typically the months when Midwesterners watch lawns dry up and streams shrink to a trickle. Now is when we’re reminded daily of how important water is to the well-being of the region. Water Matters is a community partner initiative involving the Nine Network, The Nature Conservancy and more than 20 organizations to raise awareness and understanding of the importance of water. For months, Nine has been meeting with various constituencies— loosely grouped by homeowners, business owners and landowners—to discover their concerns and share ideas about water management. Everyone has a stake in how water affects the health of our lands, people and economies. In conversations with large landowners, for instance, ranchers,

farmers and representatives from The Nature Conservancy, Ozark Regional Land Trust and Missouri Department of Conservation discussed keeping livestock from streams, testing soil to manage fertilizer use, planting native warm season grasses and removing damaged or sick trees to improve the growth of healthy ones. These strategies help property owners protect their land and the water that connects to it. All these practices have a direct impact on the quality of water shared by rural as well as urban communities. Visit nineNet.org/WaterMatters for videos, links and more information on what you can do to be a good steward of water resources. Water Matters is funded in part by Magnificent Missouri, Missouri American Water, Emerson and Whole Foods Market.

Up to Date With the Duggans Since retiring from Donnybrook five years ago, the show’s creator and original provocateur Martin Duggan has been enjoying his free time on Thursday evenings. He still keeps up with the opinions and arguments of the Donnybrook panel, but he does it from the comfort of his favorite chair.

Martin and Mae Duggan at their new home in Kirkwood.

In the event-filled past year, Duggan and his “lil’ darlin’” Mae sold the house where they raised their five children and moved to St. Agnes Home in Kirkwood, “where everyone seems to love Donnybrook,” he says. Within three weeks this spring, the couple celebrated two birthdays—Mae’s 95th and Martin’s 93rd—plus their 72nd wedding anniversary which, Duggan jokes, was a national holiday because it fell on May 26, Memorial Day. They have frequent visits from their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, spread around the world from Hong Kong to Saudi Arabia. He credits his Donnybrook pals and, of course, “his lovely wife, Mae” with helping him through serious health problems last year. The Duggans appreciate being able to attend daily Mass and being “relieved of the duties we shared in active lives.” He says, “Our feeling now is gratitude and contentment.”

like his posting to the Caribbean island of Saint Marie. All that is about to change for Poole, as fans of the series Death in Paradise will discover in the opening minutes of the show, which returns to Saturday evenings at 8:00 p.m. beginning July 12. Actor Ben Miller, who plays Poole, also does not like playing a character who wears wool suits in the tropics. Without revealing any plot spoilers, meet Detective Humphrey Goodman, Poole’s replacement. Goodman is disorganized, distracted and somewhat of a klutz who falls out of windows, trips up stairs, flips out of hammocks and bangs into furniture. Fortunately, he’s crackerjack at solving crimes, because his first day on the job presents him with a dilly.

Nova’s Surprise Local Connection Burton James “Jim” Naberhuis Jr., a retired financial advisor, enjoys researching and learning about military topics. In May, the 70-yearold resident of Troy, Illinois, and Vietnam-era Marine sat down to watch Nova: Bombing Hitler’s Dams.

test bombs. In order for the explosives to skip, or bounce, over the water as designed, pilots had to approach the target at an extremely low altitude, but not so low that the bomb hit the plane on its first bounce. The faces of the men viewing the footage sober dramatically when they see an American A-26 Invader make progressively lower passes that end when a test bomb hits the plane’s tail, causing it to crash violently. While watching this segment of the program, Naberhuis realized that he had just seen his father’s final flight. Burton James Naberhuis Sr. was one of the plane’s four crew members who perished that day testing an American version of the bouncing bomb intended to attack Japanese targets in the Pacific. Naberhuis Jr. always knew the circumstances of his father’s death, but never saw the previously classified footage until finding it on the Nine Network’s Nova broadcast. “I knew there had only been one plane crash because of my previous research,” Naberhuis says. “I knew instantly what it was. I never had the opportunity for closure, but this gave it to me. I just wish members of my dad’s generation and family were still alive. They would have received a great deal of comfort from seeing this.”

Woepke says it seemed fitting for her to get involved as a volunteer since Nine Network has always been part of her life. She currently volunteers three to four times a month and is also a Nine Network member. She helps with registration, greetings, mailings, membership drives and special events, like the Belleville Art Fair, Trash or Treasure and various events at the Magic House. She enjoys interacting with her fellow volunteers: “Every time I’m here I meet somebody who’s special in some way,” she says. Woepke recalls the fun she had while working with other volunteers at the Belleville Art Fair: “We laughed the whole time. When we’re happy, they’re happy.” Woepke says she benefits from volunteering, because she learns from the people she meets: “It’s a warm, welcoming and respectful group here.” Woepke, an animal advocate, also volunteers at the Humane Society and the Endangered Wolf Center. She has been volunteering at the Humane Society for 25 years. Aside from volunteering, Woepke works during the day as an administrative assistant for human resources and payroll at The Love Companies. She enjoys live theater and occasionally takes continuing education courses.

Leave the gift of enlightenment, truth and joy. Leave a gift in your will to the Nine Network. Judy and Harvey Harris have included the Nine Network in their wills. They are longtime supporters, and Harvey has served on the Nine Network’s Board of Directors for many years.

Judy and I have been viewers and supporters of what is now the Nine Network of Public Media for as long as we can remember. It has been my honor to serve on the Board of Directors, where I have had the opportunity to play an active role in assuring that this great asset to our region gets better every day. We can’t imagine life in our region over the last 60 years without Nine. We came of age with it. Our children and grandchildren grew up on it. And we’re still avid viewers. This is an important legacy for us to leave all the children and adults in our region. — Harvey Harris
