Dear Friends, The Nine Network of Public Media has truly become a community destination. And that’s the way we like it! Every day we see the bright faces of our interns, volunteers and Nine Academy students. And every Wednesday morning we welcome as many as 100 people from all over the area to share their entrepreneurial ideas over coffee as part of the 1 Million Cups of Coffee program. We also host regular meetings with community partner organizations working with us on initiatives like American Graduate. And, of course, our Stay Tuned program on Thursday nights attracts experts and citizens every week who are interested in being part of our conversations on topics that are important to our region. We also host tours of our building for groups of all ages, giving them a behind-the-scenes look at our studios, master control area, Nine Academy, editing suites, and our Nine Center for Public Engagement. During pledge drives, groups of volunteers from local businesses and organizations come in to answer the phones. And we often have celebrities like Rick Steves here in the studio to talk about the importance of supporting the Nine Network and PBS. Among our recent out-of-town celebrity guests was former NBC anchor Stone Phillips, who was in St. Louis for our premiere of Moving With Grace, his touching documentary on his family’s decision to relocate his elderly parents from St. Louis to North Carolina. We were pleased to be able to premier the documentary in St. Louis. [Be sure to catch its rebroadcast in July.]

Nine Networking Charlie Rose in Prime Time
Charlie Rose adds a new show to the lineup on Nine PBS.
The Charlie Rose series airs twice a day Monday–Friday on Nine PBS, at 11:30 p.m. and again the next day at 1:30 p.m. If one is too early and the other too late, then tune in Charlie Rose Weekend, a new, prime-time, 30-minute series hosted by Rose. It airs Fridays at 7:30 p.m. beginning July 5 (repeated Tuesdays at 3:30 a.m. beginning July 9). Charlie Rose Weekend draws on conversations from his nightly program and reviews defining moments in the week’s events in politics, science, business, culture, media and sports. Says Rose, “PBS is my first broadcast home and I’m excited to embark on a new project that, while distinctly different in nature from Charlie Rose, will build on its history and harness the possibilities of the future by a full use of technology and social media. We will offer a fresh look at the people shaping our lives and the questions that demand answers and context. By bringing together top newsmakers each week and engaging the audience in innovative ways, we will invite viewers to start their weekends on Friday with PBS.”
Sunday Arts Nationwide Since its debut last November, Nine’s Sunday Arts series has showcased local people and institutions that enrich St. Louis artistically. Because Nine Network executive producer Patrick Murphy shares those stories with other PBS stations, audiences across the country are appreciating the richness and diversity of St. Louis’ arts community. The Nine Network belongs to a cooperative of PBS stations that includes WNET in New York, WGBH in Boston and WETA in Washington, D.C. All 30 stations in the cooperative share arts stories they produce; WNET gathers them and selects four for a weekly package that the stations use as part of their own Sunday Arts-style local series. Among the St. Louis stories that have already aired around the country are: a Michael Eastman profile, a look at The Progress of Love exhibition at the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts and a visit to the AKC Museum of the Dog. Soon, pieces about the Kemper Art Museum’s Georges Braque exhibit and Max Beckmann will also make their way across the United States. “These segments are being picked up not because they are St. Louis stories, but because they are about great institutions and great artists,” says Murphy. Sunday Arts airs Sundays at 1:00 p.m. on Nine PBS. Episodes can be seen online at nineNet.org/SundayArts.

The Sunday Arts story about The Progress of Love installation at the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts has been picked up for broadcast by PBS stations around the country.
Teachers Award Nine Network In April, the Missouri State Teachers Association (MSTA) recognized the Nine Network’s coverage of education issues by awarding the station with four of its 2013 media awards. Nine’s American Graduate initiative swept the television category by winning best educational service announcement (“St. Louis Graduates”), feature (a Living St. Louis segment on compulsory education), general coverage (a Stay Tuned episode on accreditation) and literacy program (a Living St. Louis segment on third-grade reading). The Nine Network also won a What’s Right With the Region! award from FOCUS St. Louis. A ceremony at The Sheldon in May saluted Nine as one of the Fostering Regional Cooperation honorees. FOCUS works to develop leadership and civic engagement for a stronger region. At a Nine Network staff meeting in May, the Arts and Education Council presented the station with an engraved vase in appreciation of Nine’s contribution to the 2013 St. Louis Arts Awards. Nine produced the Arts & Education Council 2013 Arts Awards and broadcast the half-hour program in March. Continued on page 10

ent to the tiny island of Saint-Marie to solve a mysterious murder, Detective Inspector Richard Poole is a total fish out of water. A quintessentially British cop, he would much prefer the London drizzle and a freshly pressed shirt to blue seas, sparkling sands and gorgeous tropical weather. What Poole finds is a ramshackle station and a very different type of policing. The fact that there’s a goat in one of the cells says it all. He can’t get out of there fast enough, but there’s a job to do, and he does it brilliantly. His reward—a permanent posting to the island, his own personal hell on Earth.
grey skies of London as one could possibly get. The French island of Guadeloupe, about 350 miles east of Puerto Rico, stands in for the fictional Saint-Marie. Miller, who plays the buttoned-up detective Poole, suffered both heatstroke and heat exhaustion wearing his character’s real wool suits during the six months it took to film the show. He tried to cope with the island’s 104-degree heat by wearing backless shirts, but discovered that made the suits’ lining particularly uncomfortable. For the second season, thankfully, costumers found a lighter-weight fabric.
Poole may be stuck in a tropical wonderland, but he’s not going to let his standards slip. He’ll bring British rigor to this relaxed Caribbean workplace. Always in a suit and tie, eschewing sandals for a stout brogue, he’s the very embodiment of the Englishman abroad. He can get through his ordeal, if only he could find a decent cup of tea.
In his youth, the 47-year-old actor attended Cambridge University, where he dated another student, actress Rachel Weisz, and received his undergraduate degree. He was writing his Ph.D. thesis in quantum physics, but dropped out to pursue a different career altogether as part of the comedy duo Armstrong and Miller, with fellow comic Alexander Armstrong.

They starred in two of their own successful television series in England, Armstrong and Miller and, currently, The Armstrong and Miller Show. Miller has also acted on stage, in films and in other television series. (He guest-starred on Doc Martin as the nutty forest ranger Stewart, who dined with an invisible squirrel friend.)

Death in Paradise became a huge hit in Great Britain when it debuted in 2011. The second season, in 2013, did equally well. Inspector Poole, known for his skill in solving nearly impenetrable murders, finds a new body every week, which keeps him and his team in Saint-Marie busy and at odds with each other. His new co-workers dress climate-appropriately and have their own way of doing things.
His partner, feisty Camille Bordey (Sara Martins), is instinctive, wild, exotic and brilliant. Police officer Dwayne Myers (Danny John-Jules, who played Cat in Red Dwarf) is a little too cozy with criminals for Poole’s liking, but he gets the job done. And Fidel Best (Gary Carr) is honest as the day is long—at times frustrating, at times the key to a murky mystery. Keep an eye on Carr—he is one of the new Downtown Abbey cast members in the coming season, playing “charming and charismatic” jazz singer Jack Ross. Put an umbrella in it and Death in Paradise is the perfect summer cocktail made with a beautiful setting, delightful dialogue, arresting plots and characters you want to meet week after week.

In Great Britain the Proms takes place every day in many venues over eight weeks. Traditionally, the final evening of the Proms combines popular entertainers with the BBC Symphony Orchestra in an alwayssold-out extravaganza called the Last Night. (Former SLSO conductor Leonard Slatkin became only the second non-Brit to conduct the Last Night of the Proms in London between 2001 and 2004). The American-style version will be concentrated into an entertainmentpacked evening at the Scottrade Center in 2014. More details about the concert, including information on how you can attend, will be broadcast on Nine PBS during an upcoming special produced by the Nine Network and showcasing the amazing history and some of the top Proms performances from England and Europe.

Going to the prom means something entirely different when an “s” is added and the event takes place in Europe. The BBC Proms is a music festival that began in England in 1895, spread across the continent and, for the first time ever, might come to the United States starting right here in St. Louis.
Six students from Cardinal Ritter College Preparatory High School have a unique summer job opportunity thanks to the Norman J. Stupp Foundation. A grant donated by the foundation is funding a 10-week paid American Graduate internship at the Nine Academy, during which the students learn video storytelling and how to make Prezi online slide presentations. Every day they discuss staying in school and update other teens about their internship through Twitter at #TheDropN. After they polish their skills, the students will create a multimedia presentation for nineNet.org

the American Graduate initiative to encourage their peers to stay in school. The presentation will be posted on nineNet.org/ AmericanGraduate. In September, the same grant will fund the internship for four additional Cardinal Ritter students.
Opening Doors by Volunteering Jerome Latham has been a lifelong fan of Nine. “I grew up watching The Electric Company and Sesame Street, and always wanted to be on those shows,” he says. Now he prefers local programming like Donnybrook and Stay Tuned and nationally televised performances, his favorite being the Celtic Thunder concerts.
Jerome Latham has been volunteering at Nine for a year.
A year ago, he was looking for a way to give back. He considered several opportunities, but he heard about Nine’s volunteer program through a co-worker at Express Scripts, where he is a pharmacy technician. Eventually, he discovered opportunities with Nine through the station’s website. He chose to volunteer because he enjoys programming on Nine, though the station’s location is a nice bonus, as he lives nearby, in Midtown. Since August 2012, Latham has been volunteering, mainly working the front desk during the live productions of Stay Tuned and Donnybrook, giving information and directions to people as they come in. He has also worked the phones during pledge drives. Overall, Latham has greatly enjoyed his experience with Nine. “I love the people who work there. Everyone seems so happy and even the other volunteers enjoy themselves,” he states. Nine welcomes volunteers in many different capacities. One of his predecessors, the 5th duke, engaged in a menage a trois

New Leaders Council, an organization that recruits young people from many disciplines and equips them with the skills to be entrepreneurial civic leaders, held their 2013 induction ceremony in May at the Nine Network of Public Media. They were welcomed by Nine Network President and CEO Jack Galmiche, who noted the similarity between the fellows of the New Leaders Council and the founders of Channel 9. In 1954, Galmiche recalled, “A diverse group of young, highly skilled, entrepreneurial, trendsetting, innovative, professional and civically engaged and civic-minded individuals had the idea that the relatively new medium of television could strengthen the St. Louis community by providing free opportunities for learning and civic dialogue on important issues.” He then invited the New Leaders Council to join Nine’s larger network of partner organizations collaborating on behalf of the metropolitan area.
“We want you, our leaders and future leaders, to engage with us as we work together with others in our community to take the St. Louis region to new heights.”
Lawrence Welk The Lawrence Welk Show aired nationally on ABC and in syndication for 27 years, from 1955 to 1982. In 1989, KETC welcomed repeat broadcasts of Welk’s “wunnerful, wunnerful” show, episodes that were drawn mostly from the 17 years the program was produced in color. In the 24 years that Nine has aired The Lawrence Welk Show, it has enlivened weekends with the bandleader’s distinctive blend of champagne music, bubbly personalities and sparkling entertainment. On Sunday, August 25, a three-hour marathon of Welk episodes starting at 3:30 p.m. will close out the summer and wrap up Welk’s long run on the Nine Network. Expeditions With Patrick McMillan Patrick McMillan’s intense interest in natural history began at a very young age. He attributes his memorization of thousands of scientific names to his grandmother, who would read him books about animals and wildflowers, including the Latin names. He hung out in swamps in Florida with his father and grandfather, as well as at the zoo across the street from his family’s home in Naples. When his family moved to North Carolina, McMillan hiked the woods of the Blue Ridge Parkway in Allegheny County. By the time he entered the University of North Carolina, he had already documented plants formerly unknown in the state. adventure as the host of Expeditions With Patrick McMillan. The 13-part series overflows with compelling wildlife and wilderness footage captured on exotic and fascinating travels throughout North and South America. It airs on Nine PBS Thursdays at 10:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. beginning July 11. McMillan’s passion and contagious enthusiasm for the natural world is evident as he journeys through gorges, immense seas of grass, deciduous forests, Arctic tundra and other ecologically rich destinations. This season, he treks through the wildlands of California, sees the remnants of a land bridge in Alaska and explores the ever-changing tapestry of the Great Plains.
