Jack Galmiche (R) and Greg Echele, CEO of the Family Resource Center, which recognized the Nine Network’s leadership in the American Graduate initiative with the 2014 Pott Child Advocacy Award.
Dear Friends, We are very pleased to announce that for the 13th straight year, PBS has been ranked the most trusted institution in America. As a member of the PBS board, I can’t emphasize enough how important it is that we maintain the high level of national trust we have worked so hard to achieve. However, it is our trusted position in the St. Louis region that lies at the core of who we are. We recently received the Family Resource Center’s 2014 Herman T. and Phenie R. Pott Child Advocacy Award for our leadership in the American Graduate initiative to improve high school graduation rates. And it is an honor that truly reflects the importance of our work in the community. We know you rely on us to meet the highest standards of quality and integrity—whether it is in our national programming, in our local productions, or in our initiatives to strengthen civic life. As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founding of St. Louis and our own 60th birthday, it is both a time to reflect on the past and a time to look to the future. Many of the achievements our region celebrates today were the result of successfully identifying how we could work together to meet our challenges, seize our opportunities and make the most significant difference.
and entrepreneurship. But we have not done it alone. We have been joined by hundreds of individuals, organizations and businesses with the spirit, resources and determination to make it happen. We expect it to take many years for us to achieve significant improvement in high school graduation rates, in health care and the environment. But we have begun. Someone on our staff recently said: “We are in this for the long haul, aren’t we?” Yes, we are in this for the long haul. That is what it means to make a long-term investment in the future. Together, we are igniting the spirit of possibility in our region. And, as we work to complete our campaign to build the Nine Network’s capacity for the future, I hope you will make a contribution. Your contribution to the Nine Network will help make a positive difference now and for generations to come. Yours truly,
Jack Galmiche President and CEO Nine Network of Public Media

The
Doctor Is In
Doc Martin’s shingle is back out as the series returns with new episodes. e displays very few manners—and no bedside manner whatsoever—yet grumpy doctor Martin Ellingham is recommended by four out of five fans as their favorite physician. Ever since the fifth season wrapped up two years ago, Doc Martin viewers have been waiting to see what’s next in the saga of the blood-phobic surgeon perpetually irritated by the quirky residents of Portwenn, the picturesque Cornwall village where he practices. The anemic romance of Ellingham and his on-againoff-again girlfriend, schoolteacher Louisa Glasson,
received an unintentional shot in the arm from dingy pharmacist Mrs. Tishell (Selina Cadell), who did a huge favor for the couple when she kidnapped their baby in the last episode of season five. How else would Martin and Louisa have reconciled? Such a conclusion would no doubt irritate petulant Dr. Ellingham, especially because it’s true. After retrieving baby James and declaring his love for Louisa, it’s no surprise that the new season of Doc Martin begins with the sound of wedding bells. Yes, there’s another wedding afoot for the Doc and
Above left: Louisa and Martin (Caroline Catz and Martin Clunes, R) and baby James check out the new nanny, Mike Pruddy (Felix Scott). Above right: Veteran character actor Ronald Pickup (L) (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) plays a neighbor of Aunt Ruth (Eileen Atkins). Center: Officer Joe Penhale (John Marquez). Louisa, but fans of the series will have to tune in to see whether they actually go through with it this time. The sixth season debut of Doc Martin earned a phenomenal 32 percent audience share in England. Season six begins on Nine PBS March 6. Here in the United States, the Nine Network was one of the first stations to air the series, starting in 2010; today it appears in nearly 70 markets. A recent story in The New York Times about the show’s success quoted Nine Network Vice President of Programming Patricia Kistler, who described how St. Louisans have discovered and embraced the irascible surgeon and his offbeat neighbors. Series star Martin Clunes says that season seven is on the drawing board, but that the story will likely end there. It takes two years to produce a new season of eight episodes in part because, Clunes told the Los Angeles Times, it’s difficult for scriptwriters to hit the right tone with a character who no one likes and who likes no one. “It seems that it’s a hard program to write, which is why we do so few, because it takes so long to get them right. Nobody just flops a complete Doc Martin script on the desk. They all have to be taken apart and all the apologizing taken out.”
By all accounts, Clunes is a charming and funny coworker who forces his face into Doc Martin’s wellknown scowl just before cameras roll. He likes the freedom of playing someone not afraid of being impolite. He credits the acting skill of Caroline Catz, who plays Louisa, for the plausibility of someone as unrepentantly boorish as Doc Martin managing to find a partner as kindhearted as Louisa. He said, also in the Los Angeles Times, “When the Doc and Louisa talk to one another there aren’t violins playing; it’s more sort of bass guitar and a kazoo. It’s out of tune.” All of the Doc Martin scripts are finished by the time filming starts. Production shooting is timed to take advantage of summer weather at its best in Port Isaac, the real town that portrays fictitious Portwenn. The crew films several episodes at the same time, which requires actors to memorize scenes from several scripts and then flip between dialogue happening in multiple storylines. In November 2013, Nine Network President and CEO Jack Galmiche and programming VP Kistler met Doc Martin actors Ian McNeice and Joe Absolom, who play Bert Large and his son Al, in Boston at a meeting for American Public Television (APT), the distributor Continued on page 6

of the series in the United States. Galmiche is the current chairman of the board of the organization and sat next to McNeice at dinner. “Both Ian and Joe are as engaging and funny in person as they are through the characters they portray,” Galmiche recalls. “Ian has stories and experiences from his days in film that I could sit and listen to all night.” He related several of them, including one that involves dining at Warren Beatty’s house, but each came with the humorous caveat, “You can’t print that!” Absolom and McNeice agree that Clunes makes the Doc Martin set a fun workplace. But they’ll have to wait quite a while before they return to Port Isaac—filming the seventh season won’t get underway until 2015.

St. Louis Partnership Focuses on Importance of Freshwater Many conservation milestones have been achieved in Missouri over the last few years. And they all have one thing in common: partnerships. Now, the Nine Network, The Nature Conservancy, Magnificent Missouri and more than 20 conservation organizations are partnering to bring focus to the connection between freshwater and the health of our lands, people and economies. Each partner will provide unique resources and the expertise necessary to fulfill the objectives of the collaborative campaign. As we saw most recently in our Heartland documentary, stories about the beauty and the bounty of Missouri’s lands and waters help us appreciate our natural resources and their importance to our lives. With the aim of raising awareness and understanding, the Nine Network and its partners will share stories that both celebrate our natural resources and shed light on some of our most significant challenges. 8

his book is about the most wonderful excursion boat on the Mississippi River. It contains a memoir based on the 18 summers I worked doing payroll on the boat, history of the boat and of the historical family (Streckfus) that ran her. It is historic because the family ran boats on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers since the late 1800s. It is wonderful for gifts and apropos for the 250th anniversary of St. Louis and will be enjoyed by river fan, historians, lovers of St. Louis and architects. This boat ran from 1940 until 1978 and then hung around as a casino boat... many people know her.

It’s What Friends Do Like any longtime friends, Diane DeBaets and Ann Corrigan share many interests—and disagree about almost as many. DeBaets revels in new technology; Corrigan doesn’t even have email. Corrigan likes politics; DeBaets avoids it at all costs. But Corrigan, a retired St. Louis Public School special education teacher, and DeBaets, a retired computer specialist for the Defense Mapping Agency, are in complete agreement about the value and enjoyment programming on the Nine Network brings to their lives. Both women volunteer at Nine and have been members for decades. About four years ago Corrigan became friends with a Nine staff member, who told her about volunteer opportunities at the station. Corrigan signed on as 10

a volunteer and easily persuaded her friend of 40 years, DeBaets, to contribute her specialized computer skills. Corrigan agrees with DeBaets, who says of volunteering at Nine, “Everyone is so friendly, helpful and appreciative of everything I do, making me feel part of the family. It’s been a wonderful experience.” Corrigan lives in a basement apartment in DeBaets’ South City home and donates her time to many local organizations. She’s on the board of Feed My People and says she “practically lives in Grand Center,” where she volunteers as an usher at the Sheldon Concert Hall and the Black Rep, and is a subscriber to the Fox Theatre and the St. Louis Symphony. She also volunteers at the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis and her church. She says that whether she’s stuffing envelopes or showing people to their seats, volunteering is “never drudgery. It gives me a big payback, a big reward for helping.” Since she officially “retired,” DeBaets has continued to work a variety of part-time and temporary full-time jobs at, among other places, a Borders bookstore, a photography studio, her church office and UMSL, where she was a research assistant in the education department. DeBaets recently tackled the monumental job of combining several separate filing systems at Nine into a comprehensive one. She, too, ushers at The Rep and enjoys season tickets at the Fox and the Symphony. DeBaets loves to read, travel and continue learning, whether that means digging during an archeology class at Cahokia Mounds or absorbing knowledge from Nine Network programs. Corrigan and DeBaets’ enthusiasm for Nine’s shows cause them to talk over each other in their haste to list their favorites, which include Globe Trekker, Live From Lincoln Center, Masterpiece, Nova, Nature, American Experience, Living St. Louis, Arts America, Rick Steves, Rudy Maxa and Richard Bangs. They differ only on Moyers & Company, which is too “political” for DeBaets. “St. Louis is a city rich in cultural opportunities,” concludes Corrigan. nineNet.org

Shakespeare Festival St. Louis’ 2013 production of Twelfth Night was featured in an Art Fusion segment on Arts America.
Arts America In January, the Nine Network’s weekly arts series Sunday Arts changed its name to better reflect the program’s focus on arts stories from throughout the United States as well as St. Louis. The series is now titled Arts America, which also highlights that the program, previously broadcast on Sunday only, added an additional timeslot on Saturday. Watch Arts America at 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays and the rebroadcast Sundays at 1:00 p.m., where Arts America continues to anchor Nine Network’s weekly 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. block of arts programming. Most stories on Arts America come from a collaboration among 30 PBS stations across the country that allows participating stations to share their locally produced arts segments. In turn, St. Louis stories air in markets throughout the United States. Since January, Arts America includes a regular segment called Art Fusion featuring interviews with local arts leaders such as art collector Rex Sinquefield, the St. Louis Symphony’s David Robertson and Contemporary Art Museum director Lisa Melandri. The segments can also be viewed online at nineNet.org/ArtFusion or at nineNet.org/ArtsAmerica. nineNet.org
Art Fusion segments are created by the Nine Network in partnership with the Regional Arts Commission (RAC) and the Radio Arts Foundation with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Nine to Grow On Increase Strength and Improve Balance One of the downsides of aging is losing muscle, followed closely by declining strength and balance, and for many the world starts teetering. Muscle loss actually begins when we are in our 30s (earlier than most might have guessed), and continues at a rate of about 3 percent per decade without intervention. According to Peggy Cappy, whose gentle yoga approach has helped people reduce stress and create greater comfort and ease in body, mind and spirit for more than 40 years, yoga can come to the rescue. “It’s a naturally weight-bearing exercise that happens through the poses that you’ll learn to do,” says Cappy. “So when you are lifting your limbs and holding your body in different positions you are building back your strength.” Her special, Easy Yoga: The Secret to Strength and Balance, airs Saturday, March 1 at 8:00 a.m. Yoga has been shown to be highly effective in helping regain balance, and the encouraging news is that the earlier yoga practice is begun the less damage control is necessary. Statistics support the fact that very few will escape problems with balance. In fact, according to the World Health Organization, approximately 30 percent of people over 65 will fall this year, and the rates among those 76 and older will be dramatically higher. Those who do fall are more likely to suffer injuries that can impede mobility and greatly increase their risk of premature death. In Easy Yoga: The Secret to Strength and Balance, Cappy shows how yoga can come to the aid of those who want to increase strength and mobility at any age. The program introduces students from ages 30 to 80 who practice yoga, and reveals how yoga has positively impacted their lives. The hour-long program consists of two segments. The first focuses on maintaining and developing better balance; the second focuses on breathing and building strength. This is easier than it looks! Peggy Cappy demonstrates a simple yoga position that improves balance, tones core muscles and increases strength.
nineNet.org
Building Better Balance Yoga is a low-impact exercise that can work wonders for improving balance. Based on the principle of being mindful of how your body responds to any movement, yoga improves balance by improving awareness of the body. When practicing yoga poses, you need to be fully present and live in the moment of that pose. This means being aware of the sensations in the body as that pose is held. With enough practice, you learn how to precisely shift your weight to retain balance with each unique pose, which in turn can make you feel more secure against falling.
Building Strength Experts advise doing some form of strength training at least two times a week. Not only is it the number-one preventive measure against bone loss, but it also keeps the metabolism running efficiently. When most people hear the term “strength training,” they think of weight training with numerous reps of muscle contractions and using weights as resistance. Contrary to what many believe, yoga is an effective way to get toned. There are six poses (called “asanas”) that build arm strength alone! Many who’ve experienced sore muscles after yoga class know it’s because the poses are building strength in those muscles. According to Peggy Cappy, “Yoga poses that help with strength and balance also improve other things that might ail you as well. They will naturally work to improve your range of motion and the strength of your muscles. While you’re concentrating on the swaying of your body, your muscles are also naturally getting stronger.”
Fitness With Classical Stretch After the March membership drive, continue to practice flexibility and balance with the ongoing series Classical Stretch at 9:30 a.m. Saturdays. In it, Miranda Esmonde-White combines scientific stretching, manual resistance, tai-chi, yoga, ballet, physiotherapy and chiropractic movements to unlock rigid muscles and to leave you more flexible, relaxed and energized.

Leave the gift of enlightenment, truth and joy. Leave a gift in your will to the Nine Network. Judy and Harvey Harris have included the Nine Network in their wills. They are longtime supporters, and Harvey has served on the Nine Network’s Board of Directors for many years.
Judy and I have been viewers and supporters of what is now the Nine Network of Public Media for as long as we can remember. It has been my honor to serve on the Board of Directors, where I have had the opportunity to play an active role in assuring that this great asset to our region gets better every day. We can’t imagine life in our region over the last 60 years without Nine. We came of age with it. Our children and grandchildren grew up on it. And we’re still avid viewers. This is an important legacy for us to leave all the children and adults in our region. — Harvey Harris
