Dear Friends, I hope you value the range, diversity and depth of our content as much as I do. Just as we were preparing to say goodbye to Downton Abbey – a true phenomenon in the history of television – we were welcoming the powerful new series Mercy Street, set in Virginia during the Civil War. And now we can look forward to new seasons of Grantchester and Mr. Selfridge on Masterpiece. We are also in the forefront of programming in the visual and performing arts – both locally and nationally. And, I’m excited to tell you that thanks to a partnership between PBS and Time, Inc., we’re presenting the two-part series A Year in Space, documenting the journey of astronaut Scott Kelly. The first episode will air on March 2 at 7:00 p.m. within 24 hours of Kelly’s return to Earth after spending a year aboard the International Space Station. The program will be followed by Nova’s First Man on the Moon and Space Men from American Experience. Then on April 11 and 12, we’re proud to present Ken Burns’ inspiring new documentary spanning the life of Jackie Robinson. Burns worked closely with Robinson’s widow Rachel Robinson, who said, “Ken tried to understand him and his place in history,” adding that she had to hide her tears during the screening. We’re also hoping you’ll join us for a range of events this spring. Our Downton Abbey finale event will be at the Moolah Theatre on March 6. And we have partnered with St. Louis Public Library to present Christopher Kimball, host of America’s Test Kitchen and Cook’s Country, in two public events on March 15 during the library’s culinary month. Then on April 29, you’re invited to join other members for Nine Night at the Symphony. As a member of Nine you will have the opportunity to buy one ticket and get one ticket free. I also want to let you know that on May 6, we will kick off a marathon viewing of the powerful 14-hour documentary Eyes on the Prize with a special live production of Stay Tuned in the Public Media Commons. Also in May, we’ll kick off our new season of Feast TV Taste & See events in the Public Media Commons. And please be sure to read our feature “Nine Things About Nine” where we’ve gathered some facts about Nine that we hope will inform and inspire you. As we enter the final phase of our $50 million Igniting the Spirit of Possibility capacity building campaign, we urge you to consider our value and our critical needs. Throughout this year we’ll be sharing more information with you about how your support has been essential to Nine and what your support will enable us to achieve in the future. As always, thank you for your support and partnership. Yours truly,

Jackie Robinson and his son Jackie Jr. in the 1950s.

Sixty years after his final major league game, baseball great Jackie Robinson takes the field in a new Ken Burns documentarY. verybody knows St. Louis is a baseball town. Opening Day is celebrated like a holiday. And as happy coincidence has it, the Cardinals' 2016 home opener is scheduled for the same day as the premiere of Ken Burns' documentary on baseball great Jackie Robinson: April 11. The new film chronicles the life and times of the Hall of Fame second baseman who, in 1947, lifted a nation and an entire race on his shoulders when he crossed baseball’s color line. The eponymous Jackie Robinson tells the story of Jack Roosevelt Robinson, who rose from humble origins to become Major League Baseball's first black player. Both on and off the field, the Brooklyn Dodger waged a fierce lifelong battle for equality for all African Americans that transcends even his remarkable athletic achievements. The two-part, four-hour documentary is directed and produced by Ken Burns, his

daughter Sarah Burns and her husband David McMahon. Jackie Robinson features interviews with President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama; former Dodgers teammates Don Newcombe, Carl Erskine and Ralph Branca; singers Harry Belafonte and Carly Simon; journalist Tom Brokaw; and Washington University professor Gerald Early. Jackie Robinson, with original music by jazz great Wynton Marsalis. “Jackie Robinson is the most important figure in our nation’s most important game,” Ken Burns says. “He gave us our first lasting progress in civil rights since the Civil War." Getting on base Born in 1919 to tenant farmers in rural Georgia and raised in Pasadena, Calif., Robinson challenged institutional racism long before he integrated Major League Baseball. As a teenager, he demanded service at a Woolworth’s lunch counter and refused to sit in the segregated balcony at a local movie theater. In 1944, while serving as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, Robinson was arrested after he defied an order from a civilian bus driver to move to the back of a military bus. He was found not guilty. In the spring of 1947, Brooklyn Dodgers General Manager Branch Rickey signed Robinson to a major nineNet.org

league contract. To help ensure the success of their endeavor, and protect the big league prospects of future African-American players, Robinson agreed to ignore the threats and abuse that Rickey assured him he would face. That season, Robinson kept his word, remaining silent while he dazzled fans with his brilliant play and helped lead the Dodgers to the National League pennant. By the end of the year, he was the most famous black man in the country and in one poll, finished second only to Bing Crosby as the most popular American. “Robinson is often celebrated for stoically ‘turning the other cheek’ to the threats and insults he faced during his first season in the majors, and what’s lost is that this display

of self-restraint went completely against his character,” McMahon says. “This is a man who was courtmartialed for refusing to move to the back of a military bus in 1944, a decade before Rosa Parks’ protest. He was feisty, assertive and naturally inclined to speak out against the slights and indignities he faced on and off the field, and we wanted to create a more nuanced picture of a man who is often reduced to a two-dimensional myth.” In 1949, Robinson began to speak out, challenging opposing players, arguing with umpires and speaking his mind to the press, and he played some of the best baseball of his career, winning the National League MVP award. Despite his accomplishments on the field, nineNet.org

his outspokenness drew criticism across the league, from the press and even from some black fans and players who worried he would set back the progress that African Americans had achieved in baseball. Off the field After retiring from baseball in 1956, Robinson continued to use his immense fame to elevate the civil rights movement, voicing his views through a widely read newspaper column, raising money for the NAACP and Martin Luther King’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference and campaigning vigorously for candidates he believed would work to improve the lives of African Americans. The film is a warm portrait of a loving and devoted husband and father, featuring extensive interviews with Robinson’s widow, Rachel, and their surviving children, Sharon and David, who witnessed firsthand how resistant society could be to equality for African Americans. “We were incredibly lucky to have Rachel Robinson sit for three extraordinary on-camera interviews and open her personal archive of photographs,” Sarah Burns says. “Her grace and eloquence elevate the family drama of their lives to a central focus in our film, and her recollections open up a window into Jackie’s private life that is rarely seen. Thanks to her contributions, and interviews with Sharon and David, the film is not only about baseball and civil rights, but is also a powerful portrait of an AfricanAmerican family navigating the tumultuous 20th century.” WATCH: Jackie

Cardinals Connection t. Louis Cardinals fans might already know that the man who brought Jackie Robinson to Major League Baseball had deep roots with the Red Birds. Before Branch Rickey signed Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947, he played and worked for St. Louis baseball teams. Rickey started in baseball as a player for the St. Louis Browns in the early 1900s. He left the game to attend law school but returned in 1914 as an executive and manager for the Browns before moving across town to manage the Cardinals in 1919. Rickey was fired as manager in 1925, but he stayed on as general manager. He invested in the purchases of several minor league teams and created a feeder system – later termed the “farm system” – that developed young players. Rickey’s investments paid off as the Cardinals, led by homegrown talent including Pepper Martin, Joe Medwick and brothers Dizzy and Daffy Dean, won three pennants and two World Series from 1930 to 1934. The team won another World Series – with another crop of homegrown players including Hall of Famers Enos Slaughter and Stan Musial – in 1942. That was Rickey’s final year with the Cardinals before the Brooklyn Dodgers hired him as team president and general manager. But at the end of his career, he briefly returned to the Cardinals. Rickey is a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, the Cardinals Hall of Fame and the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. During his induction into the Missouri hall in 1965, Rickey suffered a heart attack and later died in a Columbia, Mo., hospital. Source: The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum

Since 2010, Bean has been an integral part of the Check and Connect program, which gets kids off the streets and back into the classroom by connecting youth with the resources they need to continue their education. The program was funded by a five-year High School Graduation Initiative grant from the U.S. Department of Education. When that grant ended in October 2015, it could have been the end of the program in St. Louis — a program that has guided more than 150 former high school dropouts through graduation in the St. Louis Public School District. Nine Network's American Graduate work has been lauding Bean’s efforts for several years, harnessing the storytelling skills of public media to spread his success story and recognizing Charlie Bean his essential value by honoring him as an American Graduate Champion. Thanks, in part, to the attention generated by this recognition, St. Louis Public Schools decided to continue the funding for Bean’s work. American Graduate is a collaborative effort led nationally and locally by the Nine Network to improve youth outcomes from cradle to career. “American Graduate talks about what's positive, what obstacles we can overcome as a region to ensure all kids walk across the stage and receive a meaningful high school diploma,” Bean says. “These are true success stories.” nineNet.org

Humorous and quick, Keefe was a perfect fit for the Donnybrook panel. “She really brought a lot of credibility to the show,” says Donnybrook founding member Ray Hartmann.

Bill McClellan and Keefe were fellow Donnybrook panelists for 10 years until Keefe retired in 1998. “She was the smartest person I ever met,” McClellan says. And he respected that wisdom. He recalls that if he offered an opinion and Keefe replied, “Is that what you think?” he quickly recanted. “No,” he’d say, asking humbly, “What should I think?”

In 2011, Keefe returned to the Rochester area. McClellan once heard her say of life and longevity, “Darlin’, it’s all genetics and attitude.” She lived to be 90.

Donnybrook panelist Wendy Wiese says of Keefe, “Anne had a healthy cynicism when it came to telling the important stories, but as a friend and colleague, she was joyful, optimistic and open to all ideas.” She guided and encouraged young reporters, often regaling them with hilarious anecdotes from the trenches, says Wiese, adding, “There will never be another like her.”

Following Keefe’s death, Nine honored her with a tribute in the Public Media Commons, as well as special segments on Donnybrook and Living St. Louis.

Meet the Board David Conner hen asked why he supports the Nine Network of Public Media, David Conner answers with a simple question: “How could I not support it?” A public media fan, Conner enjoys quality programming, but he nineNet.org

also appreciates the range of ways Nine engages our area. “The Nine Network is a tremendous community resource bringing a wealth of broadcasting pleasure to a broad audience, as well as a forum for discussing regional, national and international issues on a timely basis,” he says. Conner joined the Nine Network’s board of directors last year at the urging of board chair Maxine Clark. Conner and Clark serve together on the board of trustees at Washington University in St. Louis, Conner’s alma mater. Conner has spent extensive time in Asia, including serving in the Peace Corps in Nepal. He had a successful finance career in Japan, India and, most recently, Singapore. Two years ago, he retired from Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp., Singapore’s secondlargest lender. During a decade serving as director and CEO of the bank, Conner was named Outstanding CEO of the Year in Singapore. Now that he’s retired and returned to the United States, he has some time to watch Nine. His taste is eclectic, from mysteries and comedies to dramas and current affairs. “I enjoy all the British productions on Nine Network,” Conner says, “particularly Midsomer Murders, Doc Martin, Downton Abbey and Sherlock, as well as the weekly programs Donnybrook and Stay Tuned.” That variety is among the things Conner values about Nine. “Public television is a tremendous regional resource, enhancing education, the arts and entertainment throughout our community,” he says. Conner is a member of the Finance Committee of Nine’s board. He also is on the boards of Forest Park Forever, London-based Standard Chartered Bank and GasLog Partners LP. nineNet.org

New on Nine Ever wonder what it’s like to live in space? Reach for the stars with the outof-this-world special A Year in Space.

Astronauts and twin brothers Scott (left) and Mark Kelly

‘A Year in Space’

The two-part documentary follows astronaut Scott Kelly during his year on the International Space Station – the longest space mission in American history. The film includes a look at experiments on the physical effects of space travel, which researchers will conduct on Scott Kelly’s body by comparing him with his identical twin brother, retired astronaut Mark Kelly. The first of the two timely programs premieres March 2 — within a day of Scott Kelly’s planned return to Earth. It follows his mission from training and launch through his 12 months aboard the International Space Station right up through his descent and landing. Footage of his landing is planned to be included. The second program is scheduled to premiere in 2017. A Year in Space joins a Think Wednesday lineup of astronautthemed content that includes Nova’s First Man on the Moon and Space Men from American Experience. Testing Human Limits Scott Kelly’s current 12-month stay on the International Space Station is testing human limits for space travel and laying the groundwork for a manned mission to Mars. Spending a year in space has been described as the epitome of extreme, with extraordinarily high physical stakes. Following Scott in space and Mark at home on Earth, A Year in Space tells the story of what it takes mentally and physically to spend a year in space and then, using what NASA has learned from the Kelly brothers, what it means for humanity as we journey to Mars and beyond. Scott and Mark, who is married to former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, offer a near-perfect, two-person sample 16

group for biomedical research. NASA is closely tracking Scott’s physical and emotional changes and his biological functions down to the molecular level while he is in orbit. The agency hopes to identify precisely what changes happen to Scott to help develop methods of overcoming the challenges of human interplanetary travel. In addition to witnessing the rigors of training and the mission itself, the series presents the compelling personal story of Scott and his family. A Year in Space also delves into the broader historical context of the mission, including the history of space exploration, the political background of the Russian-U.S. relationship, and the science and engineering conundrums posed by interplanetary space travel. The second episode will follow what happens to Scott Kelly as he returns to life on Earth. Once back on the ground, NASA will study what happens to the mind and body during and after long-duration space travel. It also will explore the future of humanity’s attempts to live beyond Earth and what it might take – technically and socially – to travel to and establish outposts on other planets, moons and asteroids. PBS partnered with Time Inc.’s Red Border Films on A Year in Space.

Adapted from Time’s original digital video series, the specials were created especially for PBS and will introduce new and unseen material unique to PBS, telling the story in new and different ways. Space Week A Year in Space airs during PBS Space Week, featuring programming devoted to aspects of space exploration. The specials begin March 1 with Space Men: American Experience, which highlights forgotten heroes and amazing aeronautical feats – including the daring pre-astronauts who laid groundwork that led to the modernday space program. Right after A Year in Space on March 2, catch Nova’s First Man on the Moon, which follows Neil Armstrong’s incredible life story from his time as a pioneer of highspeed flight to his first legendary step on the Moon. An encore of Space Men follows. For the next generation of astronauts, PBS KIDS premieres new episodes of Ready Jet Go! during Space Week. The animated series builds on children’s curiosity about science, technology and astronomy. WATCH: A Year in Space (Part 1) Wednesday, March 2, at 7 p.m. nineNet.org

On the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising, this three-part documentary follows a pivotal week in the history of Ireland. The uprising began the day after Easter when Irish rebels led an armed insurrection against the British Empire. It ended six days later with the outnumbered Irish nationalists defeated. But it heralded the beginnings of support for an independent Irish state, which was established six years later. Irish actor Liam Neeson narrates the film.
