Dear Friends, As a native St. Louisan, I feel enormous pride in our region. As we look at our history, we learn more and more about the vision, hard work and determination that have gone into so many of our region’s accomplishments. We have also learned that many communitywide achievements require an additional ingredient—the ability and the willingness for us to work together. And that is easier said than done! Several years ago, we decided it was time— challenging or not—to put the idea of community collaboration to the test. We believed it was the only way for us to achieve significant community impact in certain areas. So, we began to invite other community organizations to work with us on some critical issues—and to join us in shining a light on some of our region’s great achievements. To our surprise and gratification, when we invited them, they came. Since then, hundreds of organizations have partnered with us on initiatives related to health, education, the environment, the economy and the arts. They came to share their knowledge, their experience, and their resources in an effort to achieve shared goals—goals none of us could have achieved alone. By the way, most of us are still working together. I think it is because we forged lasting relationships and because we know our work will never be completely finished. Every achievement seems to present a new opportunity to do more!

This spring we launched a new initiative called Water Matters, a collaboration with more than 20 community partners focused on the importance of water to the health and welfare of our region. Our shared goal is to raise awareness and understanding of the connection of water to the health of our lands, people and economies. We were honored to be part of an important event at the Missouri Botanical Garden in April honoring Magnificent Missouri, an organization founded by two of our Water Matters partners, John McPheeters and Nine Network board member Dan Burkhardt. Magnificent Missouri was recognized by the Conservation Foundation of Missouri as the Conservation Organization of the Year. Individually and through Magnificent Missouri John and Dan have worked tirelessly and effectively to raise funds, foster collaboration and create awareness of conservation efforts in Missouri. Every one of our partners in the Water Matters initiative inspires us to tell compelling stories about the importance of being good stewards of our water. We hope you will join us in this effort. And we thank you for making our work possible. Yours truly,

Jack Galmiche President and CEO Nine Network of Public Media

Former combat photographer Stacy Pearsall, who now suffers from severe short-term memory loss as a result of her service, takes portraits of veterans to make them feel like rock stars. She took the photos below of (L-R) Letrice Titus, Taylor Urruela and Brad Farnsley.

The three-part series Coming Back With Wes Moore is the centerpiece for more than a dozen programs in May about serving our country. emorial Day in May and the 70th anniversary of D-Day in June will inspire Americans to contemplate how wars touch people. Many programs on Nine PBS in May have a connection to America’s wars, from a series about the history of women in the military to a documentary about how the country handled the massive Civil War death toll. The cornerstone program for these specials is Coming Back With Wes Moore, a new series executive produced by best-

selling author and veteran Wes Moore that recounts his search for answers to some of the most difficult questions related to returning from war. Moore’s journey takes him into the personal lives of different soldiers as they attempt to reintegrate into society, establish new identities and, for many, find a new mission. It airs Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. beginning May 13 and again on Thursdays at 1:00 a.m. beginning May 15. “We want to better humanize re-integration by taking the

audience into the lives of these men and women as they return from war,” says Moore, who is an Army combat veteran. “I want to make sure people understand these stories and who these people are who are coming back from combat.” Over the course of three episodes, Coming Back follows Moore into the lives of different soldiers, including Army National Guard Lt. Col. and congresswoman Tammy Duckworth of Schaumburg, Illinois, and husband and wife Marine Sgt. Christopher Phelan

and Air Force Capt. Star Lopez of Los Angeles, California. The series begins with Moore’s visit to Bonnie Collins, the mother of one of Moore’s oldest friends and a fellow officer, Brian Collins. In the first episode, Coming Back, viewers learn that the previous year, after getting married and beginning a new career, Collins abruptly took his own life. This incident initiates Moore’s desire to learn more about why some veterans can get on with their lives, while some cannot. In Fitting In, Moore explores the concept of identity, how it’s altered during deployment and how it’s altered again when a veteran returns home. Moving Forward, the final episode, examines the veterans’ drive to find a new mission, to contribute, to be part of something bigger than themselves. “My hope is that the public can get a glimpse of what the end of the wars means to these brave men and women and to their families,” continues Moore. “There is more we can do than simply saying ‘thank you for your service.’ We can truly show our gratitude by asking them to share their experiences.”

Coming Back With Wes Moore focuses on service members from America’s most recent conflicts; National Memorial Day Concert 2014 (May 25, 7:00 p.m.; repeated May 25, 8:30 p.m. and May 27, 1:00 a.m.) includes veterans from all of America’s wars. Actors Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise co-host the 25th anniversary broadcast of this night of remembrance honoring the service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform, their families at home and all those who have given their lives for our country. Unsung Heroes: The Story of America’s Female Patriots (May 19 and 26, 10:00 p.m.; repeated May 21, 3:00 a.m.) centers on contributions made by women in the military. Today more women serve in the armed forces than at any other time in our nation’s history. This courageous heritage can be traced back to the American Revolution where women like Molly Pitcher and Sarah Shattuck donned men’s clothes and took up arms against the British. Hundreds of women participated in the Civil War as nurses, spies and soldiers. Of the 33,000 women who served their country during the Great War, some 300 lost their lives. More than 700,000 women defended America in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Today, there are almost 2 million living female veterans whose service has Photo courtesy of Powderhouse.

“Coming Back With Wes Moore provides a window into the lives of those who have returned home after serving our country in a time of war,” says Beth Hoppe, chief programming executive and general

manager of general audience programming at PBS. “It is a statement of thanks to the men and women who have served and continue to serve our nation. And it will contribute to an ongoing conversation about what we as a country...can do to help these soldiers return to civilian life.”

been heroic, their sacrifices profound and their enormous accomplishments largely ignored. World War II is the subject of several documentaries that demonstrate the bravery of American forces and the significant obstacles they overcame. Escape in the Pacific: 1943 (May 5, 10:00 p.m.; repeated May 7, 3:00 a.m.) delivers a dramatic, gripping account of the only successful group escape from a Japanese POW camp. On April 4, 1943, 10 American prisoners of war—survivors of the infamous Bataan Death March and the Fall of Corregidor—and two Filipino convicts carried out a daring escape from one of Japan’s most notorious prison camps, the Davao Penal Colony located on Mindanao. The documentary, based on John Lukacs’ book, unfolds through the story of Air Force Lt. Col. William Edwin Dyess. Details of another daring escape are revealed in Nova: Escape From Nazi Alcatraz (May 14, 8:00 p.m.; repeated May 16, 2:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., and May 18, noon). Colditz Castle, a notorious prisoner of war camp in Nazi Germany, was supposed to be escapeproof. But in World War II, a group of British officers constructed a two-man glider out of bed sheets and floorboards, planning to fly to freedom from the roof of the castle. The war ended before Continued on page 6

they could put it to the test. After a 70-year wait, a team of engineers and carpenters rebuilds the glider to finally find out if the legendary glider plan would have succeeded. Escape was also the goal of prisoners whose story is told in Escape From a Nazi Death Camp (May 20, 8:00 p.m.; repeated May 22, 2:00 a.m. and May 23, 9:00 p.m.). In east Poland, at the remote Nazi death camp of Sobibor, 300 Jewish prisoners staged a bloody breakout. This film travels to Sobibor with the last remaining survivors to reveal their extraordinary story of courage, desperation and determination. The multilayered plot unfolds like a Hollywood blockbuster—from the last-minute change to the escape plan forced by the unexpected arrival of a trainload of SS soldiers, to the systematic luring of individual camp guards to separate locations and different, highly creative deaths, yet every terrible and inspiring moment of this story is true. Eagles of Mercy (May 12, 10:00 p.m.) recounts the early hours of June 6, 1944, when two young American medics with the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles parachuted into France and soon found themselves trapped in a 12th-century Norman church in the small village of Angoville-au-Plain. Medics Robert Wright and Kenneth Moore provided first aid to the first casualties of D-Day. During the documentary, they recount parachuting into Normandy ahead of the amphibious landing on Utah Beach, surviving German anti-aircraft artillery and carrying on their life-saving work even when their unit retreated. D-Day Uncovered (May 27, 8:00 p.m.; repeated May 29, 2:00 a.m. and May 30, 8:00 p.m.) examines the numbers behind the greatest invasion in history. The film takes in everything from strategy to logistics; probability analysis to operational decisions. It conveys the enormous scale of the operation through innovative visualization, 6

such as LiDAR scanning of the Normandy beaches, including the defenses above and below ground. Nova takes an underwater view of the invasion in D-Day’s Sunken Secrets (May 28, 8:00 p.m.; repeated May 30, 2:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m.). The two-hour special examines the seabed bordering the D-Day beaches where hundreds of ships sank while running the gauntlet of mines and bunkers, creating one of the world’s largest underwater archaeological sites. Dive teams, submersibles and underwater robots identify key examples of the Allied craft that fell victim to German shellfire, mines and torpedoes. The technology of World War II is the focus of two new episodes of Nazi Mega Weapons. The first, Jet Fighter Me262 (May 7, 9:00 p.m.; repeated May 9, 3:00 a.m.), examines the most technologically advanced plane of WWII, the Messerschmitt Me262 fighter jet; the second, Fortress Berlin (May 14, 9:00 p.m.; repeated May 16, 3:00 a.m.), tells Actors recreate strategies used to defend Berlin in Nazi Mega Weapons: Fortress Berlin.

how Hitler fortified Berlin during the final days of the Third Reich. Nova explores one of the Allies’ technological innovations in a repeat of Bombing Hitler’s Dams (May 21, 8:00 p.m.; May 23, 2:00 a.m.), the story of the revolutionary bouncing bomb and how it successfully destroyed two gigantic dams in Germany’s industrial heartland. Finally, an American Experience examines the ultimate sacrifice of war—the death of wounded soldiers on the battlefield. American Experience: Death and the Civil War (May 26, 8:00 p.m.; May 28, 2:00 a.m.; June 2, 2:30 a.m.) explores a critical but largely overlooked aspect of the Civil War: the varied implications of the war’s staggering and unprecedented death toll. Based on the book This Republic of Suffering by Drew Gilpin Faust, the film examines several key battles and Dead are buried after their corpse-strewn the Civil War battle at Fredericksburg. aftermaths, and concludes with a section on the postwar efforts toward reburial and remembrance.

Patricia Harrison (L) and Wes Moore.

His 2010 book, The Other Wes Moore, explores his relationship with a young man also named Wes Moore, who grew up in similar circumstances but ended up in prison serving a life sentence for murder. The book reveals how critical decisions brought each man from essentially the same starting point to vastly different outcomes. Moore became involved in American Graduate to help young people choose paths that lead to a positive outcome—graduation. Moore participated in the American Graduate Day broadcast in September 2013. Also last year, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) presented Moore with its Thought Leader Award, given to American leaders who affirm the essential services that public media provides to citizens in areas of education, journalism and the arts. “Wes Moore is an inspiring advocate for America’s youth and a champion for public media’s American Graduate initiative,” said Patricia Harrison, president and CEO of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. “His leadership on issues that matter in our communities—supporting our military veterans and keeping students on the path to a high school graduation—is based on his vision that each of us has the power to make a difference in a young person’s life.”

Wes Cowan, an internationally recognized expert in historical Americana, joined the panel and addressed the subject of copycat cable programs that assess the value of “discovered” antiques. He was “pointedly critical,” wrote Barry Garron in Current, a public media newspaper. He quoted Cowan: “Those shows are totally staged and Antiques Roadshow is not. It’s completely legit. Is it reasonable to think that somebody is going to find a $100,000 item in a storage locker that somebody else didn’t pay rent on? I mean, come on.”

Coming From Ken Burns Filmmaker Ken Burns never wants for good ideas for his next documentary. They are lined up like planes at a busy airport, just waiting for the OK to take off. Coming in September is his massive seven-part, 14-hour series about Theodore, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. In fact, representatives from PBS came to St. Louis in February to conduct focus group research with more than a dozen area residents whose input will help PBS devise the program’s marketing plan. Wes Cowan of Antiques Roadshow was blunt with TV critics.

The PBS series Start Up, about the next generation of American business owners and the dreams that drive them, will record part of its second season of episodes in St. Louis. Host/creator/producer Gary Bredow and producer Jenny Feterovich are coming to St. Louis in June, inspired by a Wall Street Journal article that reported the city is showing signs of having an entrepreneur boom. “We love to tell the stories of the folks on the ‘front line’ who are out there revitalizing small business,” says Bredow. “That’s what the show is all about.” At press time Bredow and Feterovich had not yet chosen what companies and individuals would be featured in Start Up. The series will return to Nine PBS in the fall. Two half-hour specials in May celebrate the dining delicacy: Eatin’ Crabs: Chesapeake Style on Saturday, May 10 at 4:00 p.m. and Eatin’ Crabcakes: The Best I Ever Had! on the following Saturday, May 17 at 4:00 p.m.

Eatin’ Crabs: Chesapeake Style is a video foray into the world of the blue crab from dockside to table, capturing a slice of life that is uniquely Maryland, that is, the custom of tucking into a mound of hot steamed crabs. famed crab shacks, to beloved and isolated locales filled with crab-hungry locals from Ocean City to Oakland, Eatin’ Crabs: Chesapeake Style catches the world of crab-loving and cracks it open for all to see. Whitey Schmidt, crab connoisseur, serves as a guide to enjoying the Chesapeake Bay area’s favorite addiction. From hard-to-find crab houses and legendary spice recipes to the finer skills of picking crabs, Schmidt travels the state in search of the Bay’s greatest treasure. Eatin’ Crabcakes: The Best I Ever Had! takes up the challenge of tracking down the finest crab cakes with a fun-loving, kitchen-hopping adventure that traverses the state in search of Crab Cake Heaven. One person who knows what makes a superior crab cake is Nancy Faidley. She makes a funny face when asked her for her secret ingredient. She owns and runs Faidley’s Seafood Market in a crowded corner stall in Baltimore’s noisy and near-ancient Lexington Market. Here, she regularly sells out of her specialty: Faidley’s famous crab cakes. Faidley will demonstrate how she puts her crab cakes together by hand, and even how long she deep fries them. But her secret blend of ingredients is off-limits. Forever, she says. Her long-guarded secret reflects a happy tradition among crab aficionados, from restaurateurs and chefs to housewives and watermen: personal ownership of the world’s besttasting crab cake recipe. Apparently, there are thousands of them! From G&M’s famous goliath-sized crab cakes for the hungriest seafood purest, to the rarified palette that craves stovetop tradition with a lilt, to old-time tried-and-true recipes that have survived kitchen-based tests and trials of the ages, Eatin’ Crabcakes: The Best I Ever Had! is the ultimate crab cake treasure hunt across the Chesapeake region.
