Dear Friends, We often say that an investment in the Nine Network is an investment in the St. Louis region. And it’s true. Yes, people support us because of our programs—both local and national. And most people have a long list of favorites. But we hear so many people say that they support us primarily because they believe in our overall value to the region. For more than 60 years, Nine has been looked to as our region’s storyteller. And it is a role that carries significant responsibility. Yes, we showcase our region’s strengths and achievements, but being a good citizen means that we must help create awareness of our region’s challenges and do what we can to generate solutions. Here at the Nine Network, we believed in engagement, whether it is participating in the arts or mentoring a young person as an American Graduate Champion. Part of our job is to stimulate interest in what our region has to offer; part of it is to help generate positive change; and part of it is to present you with distinctive local and national content. We’re very proud of our local series. These productions reflect our ongoing commitment to the St. Louis region. And, frankly, we’re especially pleased to give you experiences you might not otherwise have. Patrick Murphy recently received a call from a 92-year-old woman letting him know that Night at the Symphony has now made it possible for her to enjoy the Symphony again. Now that is a gratifying message for all of us! As we reflect on our last 60-plus years and prepare for the next 60, we are reminded of how many of our members have been with us for decades. You hear us talk about sustaining members. Well, many of you have sustained us since the beginning. And we hope many of you will be sustaining members over the upcoming decades. I also want to pay special tribute to our volunteers. We are so fortunate to have more than 250 active volunteers who help us with everything from answering your calls to greeting you at events. The next time you speak to one of our volunteers, give them a special thank you! Yours truly,

Vice President of Production Patrick Murphy Vice President of Marketing and Communication Kay Porter

LOCAL IMPACT Every week seven series produced by the Nine Network engage viewers in the life of our region. he many national programs broadcast on the Nine Network connect our region to the world. Series such as Nova, Washington Week, American Masters, Charlie Rose, Masterpiece and Frontline bring us views of what people across the country and across continents are thinking, creating, enjoying, studying, solving and celebrating. But it’s Nine’s seven locally produced series that show us ourselves. Arts America, Donnybrook, Donnybrook…Your Turn, Living St. Louis, Night at the Symphony, Science Matters and Stay Tuned spotlight the region from many perspectives that represent the variety of life in the metropolitan area. They deepen our understanding

and heighten our appreciation of our community and neighbors, and bring focus to what our region does well—and what we need to work on. While national programs provide a global context for the challenges and opportunities facing us, Nine’s local content in conjunction with relevant national content strengthens the effectiveness of both. Every week Nine’s skilled local production staff creates episodes for six series covering the arts, science, current events, important issues and powerful human interest stories. Nine continues to bring St. Louis together as we connect our region to the world and the world to St. Louis.

Donnybrook

Thursdays, 7:00 p.m. Repeats Saturdays, 1:00 a.m. and Sundays, 11:00 a.m.

Stay Tuned

Thursdays, 9:00 p.m. Repeats Saturdays, 2:00 a.m. In 2014, the editors of St. Louis Magazine chose Stay Tuned as Best News Program for their A-List Awards. This live, public engagement series brings the community together for discussions of local issues as well as national events with local implications. It not only serves as a public forum, but also provides a platform for community discussions on topics as diverse as cancer, civic pride, entrepreneurship, the economic impact of sports, early childhood education, the environment, elections, public transportation, health care and more. (Please note: On July 9 Stay Tuned moves to Fridays at 7:00 p.m. and will switch to a half-hour format.) Producers: Justin Hartmann, Jim Kirchherr, Anne-Marie Berger View online: nineNet.org/StayTuned

Since 1987, Donnybrook panelists have been disagreeing politely about local, regional and national issues. Originally goaded by provocateur Martin Duggan, and Charlie Brennan since 2010, the group of journalists/friends continues to rile each other and viewers alike. Donnybrook is one of the longest-running, mostwatched locally produced public affairs programs in public television. Producers: Patrick Murphy, Anne-Marie Berger View online: nineNet.org/local-productions/donnybrook

Donnybrook…Your Turn Thursdays, 7:30 p.m. Repeats Saturdays, 1:30 a.m.

In addition to Stay Tuned, Donnybrook…Your Turn also gives viewers a forum for expressing their perspectives. This long-running live call-in show allows the audience to speak directly to panelists to tell them if their opinions are off base or right on target. Producers: Patrick Murphy, Anne-Marie Berger

(L-R) Hartmann, Vaninger, Ezell, Murphy, Berger and Kirchherr.

Arts America

Saturdays, 3:30 p.m. Repeats Sundays, 2:00 p.m. Local series Arts America and Living St. Louis complement national programs about the arts. In 2014 alone, Nine broadcast more than 600 total hours of arts programming. Each Arts America episode presents arts stories produced and shared by a collaboration of 30 PBS stations across the country, including Nine. Nine viewers get to see what’s happening artistically around the nation, and St. Louis arts stories produced by Nine get national exposure. Producers: Patrick Murphy, Kara Vaninger View online: nineNet.org/artsamerica

Living St. Louis

Mondays, 7:00 p.m. Thirteen Mid-America Emmy Awards sit on the virtual shelves of Living St. Louis, now celebrating 11 years of showcasing the diverse people and places that make metropolitan St. Louis an interesting and thriving area. Its stories have been seen all over the world via YouTube; views have been logged from Europe, North and South America, Asia and Africa. Topics explored on Living St. Louis encompass butchers, bakers and innovative start-up makers—the only common theme is: St. Louis. Producers: Ruth Ezell, Kara Vaninger, Patrick Murphy, Jim Kirchherr, Anne-Marie Berger View online: nineNet.org/local-productions/living-st-louis 6

nineMagazine | May–June 2015

Science Matters

Wednesdays, 10:00 p.m. Repeats Sundays, 10:30 a.m. and the following Wednesday, 10:30 p.m. New kid on the block Science Matters launched this year to highlight the strength of scientific development in St. Louis, from biology to new technology, zoology, botany, chemistry, mathematics and medicine. Like Arts America, Science Matters shares stories with public television stations in more than 30 of the top markets across the country. Night at the Symphony

The first Monday of the month, 7:00 p.m. In a unique partnership, Night at the Symphony provides a frontrow seat to the world’s greatest music as played by the Grammy-winning St. Louis Symphony. Multiple cameras are used to capture every moment, from the emotion of conductors such as David Robertson and Steven Jarvi uniting top musicians in the creation of magnificent sounds, to the rapt faces of appreciative audience members. Nine Networking Sustainable

A type of membership called “sustainer” is an ongoing membership whereby a set contribution is deducted from your credit card or checking account every month. You can authorize any amount from $5 to $100 or more. This is not an installment or layaway style of payment plan; it’s simply a convenient way for you to support the programming you already enjoy and support—without the hassle of yearly reminders, writing checks and making phone calls. You can change your contribution amount easily at any time by giving us a call. Already, more than 15 percent of Nine’s members have signed up to be sustainers! In addition to the value of being an ongoing supporter, sustaining members also receive ongoing benefits such as invitations to station tours and to our annual fall preview of new programs. To set up your sustaining membership or for more information visit nineNet.org/support and click on the “Sustaining Member” option in red on the right, or call (314) 512-9199.

Ritenour students Donte Sutherland (L) and Devonte Byrd rap about graduating.

Music to Graduate By Motivational speaker Koran Bolden, a Nine Network American Graduate champion and partner in the initiative, uses music to encourage students to stay in school and graduate. More specifically, he prods young people to write their own songs, which he records in his studio, Street Dreamz Artist Development at St. Louis Mills Mall. One young threesome—Ritenour High School students 16-year-old Donte Sutherland, 17-year-old Devonte Byrd and Ritenour graduate Samone Sherrell—recorded a rap song with Bolden that their school’s administrators liked so much, they play it weekly on the school’s radio station and public address system as kids walk between classes. The song is called “Do What We Do.”

With lyrics such as “Gotta do what I do, gotta keep myself together, gotta stay in school,” the song is a pick-me-up, motivator and reminder to students to ignore distractions by concentrating on graduation. “It’s a neat song that’s positive and fun,” says Ritenour Principal Gary Spiller. “It’s by students, for students, and the kids know it’s something different.” Sutherland said Bolden introduced him to American Graduate’s purpose, which helped him focus and contribute to writing the song. “I was just inspired by the movement, and I wanted to do things to motivate other students,” says Sutherland.

Cortango Orquesta will perform a free concert in the Public Media Commons on May 18.

On May 18 at 7:30 p.m., feel the Latin rhythms of Cortango Orquesta, a tango ensemble with a symphonic twist. This concert and dance band, founded and led by Cally Banham, a trained social tango dancer, specializes in popular classics from the beloved orchestra leaders of tango’s golden era. Cortango is named for the “cor anglais,” or “English horn”—the atypical instrument in this otherwise “orquesta tipica.” The songbook of Cortango comes in part from original arrangements made by members of the band, and from a number of commissioned arrangements from Argentine bandoneon player and tango arranger Julian Hasse. On June 15 at 7:30 p.m., The 442s explore the boundaries of jazz, classical, folk and rock music. The acoustic instrumental quartet comprises two members of the St. Louis Symphony and two jazz musicians from the Erin Bode Group. Instead of working on this old house, the familiar crew of general contractor Tom Silva, master carpenter Norm Abram, plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey, landscape contractor Roger Cook and host Kevin O’Connor will build that new house for a wounded Iraq war veteran. Over three Saturdays beginning May 16 at 5:00 p.m., This Old House highlights the work of the nonprofit organization Homes for Our Troops as they build a new home for Staff Sgt. Matthew DeWitt and his family in Hopkinton, New Hampshire. On his first deployment to Iraq in 2003, DeWitt sustained serious injuries in a rocket-propelled grenade attack that resulted in the partial amputation of both of his arms. Today, his family looks forward to their new home where keyless entry, raised countertops, accessible storage, touchless faucets nineNet.org

and raised garden beds will make life easier as DeWitt and his wife, Cat, raise their two sons and pursue shared passions for cycling and gardening.

Finally, World War II ended, and Foyle unraveled more murders and devious treacheries as soldiers came home and he was recruited by MI5.

Homes for Our Troops has been building specially adapted homes— mortgage-free—for deserving veterans since 2004. Also in this three-part series, O’Connor travels to Florida to talk with other Homes for Our Troops veterans/home recipients to learn how their new customized homes have impacted their lives.

Now, it’s 1946, and Foyle is embroiled in the pressure and politics of the Cold War. Michael Kitchen as the enigmatic detective chief inspector Foyle and Honeysuckle Weeks as his loyal driver Sam return in the final three new episodes of Foyle’s War. The 90-minute mysteries, inspired by real events during the Cold War

and featuring John Mahoney (Frasier) as a guest star, air Friday, May 15, 22 and 29 at 7:30 p.m. These concluding episodes are not presented by PBS as part of Masterpiece Mystery!, but were acquired independently by the Nine Network for Foyle fans in St. Louis. As an interesting footnote, while the series covers six years, from 1940 to 1946, actress Honeysuckle Weeks began filming when she was 21; she is now 35. Continued on page 12

Foyle’s War Concludes In 2003, when Nine Network viewers first met Christopher Foyle in Foyle’s War, it was 1940, and instead of fighting Nazis in service with the armed forces, his superiors assigned the crack detective to fight crime on the home front, in his quiet town on England’s southern coast. Through the years, Foyle solved murders, conspiracies, alleged suicides and secret spy plots.

Honeysuckle Weeks (L) and Michael Kitchen say goodby to their Foyle’s War characters.

Many thanks to the Nine Network supporters who continue to help the station celebrate 60 years in St. Louis by sending in their memories of Channel 9 through the decades. Anna L. Jackson recalls that when she was 6 or 7, a volunteer came to her family’s home in St. Charles asking for donations to help Nine get on the air. She writes, “I am so glad that my mother was so concerned about my education that she gave an early donation to the station.” When Jackson grew up, she became a teacher who depended on Nine’s programming, such as Reading Rainbow, as an educational tool for her students. She and a colleague could not each afford a membership, so they split the cost of one in order to receive the program guide. “We would spend our lunch time poring over it in order to see what special programs we wanted our students to watch,” she explains. Jackson then notes: “In time our salaries improved so we could each afford our own membership.” Joan Young of Germantown, Illinois, remembers joining a 4H club televised on Nine in the 1960s. “I couldn’t tell you now what the projects were, but I still remember the excitement of getting my booklet and packet of materials and rushing to the TV each week when the program was about to start,” she writes. “I've been hooked on Channel 9 and PBS ever since!” Nine was complicit in one of Barbara Haselhorst Prater’s youthful romances in the mid-1950s. Her high school, nineNet.org

St. Anthony of Padua, didn’t allow students to wear “going steady” rings, and she and her boyfriend had already gotten in trouble for doing so. But, young love prevailed. Throwing caution to the wind, the two daringly wore their rings on air when they appeared on Channel 9 with other students to do a biology demonstration.

Alisa Matlovsky (R) and her mom, Janet Wolfe, in the documentary Caring for Mom and Dad.

Parent Care Americans are living longer than ever before, and soon older adults will outnumber the young. Today, family caregivers are providing 90 percent of parent care, in addition to balancing work and family. How will the nation adapt to ensure that adequate care can be provided for both the caregivers and for those being cared for? Caring for Mom and Dad, an hour-long documentary narrated by Meryl Streep, seeks to answer that question as it explores the emotional, health and financial challenges that many caregivers face every day. The program airs May 11 at 10:00 p.m. and is repeated May 13 at 3:00 a.m. and May 18 at 2:00 a.m. In the documentary, eight families share their stories, such as Breanna Olson, a millennial who was forced to choose between a promising political career and moving back home to care for her parents; and Alicia Zepeda-Cervantes,

As a math teacher and Sunday school teacher, Doris Wolff inspired her students to learn and to acquire values that would be important throughout their lives. When she provided for the Nine Network through her will, she touched even more lives than those who had the fortune of being her students.

“The future belongs, not to those who have the most, but to those who do the most with what they have.”

—Eugene P. Odum

Leave the gift of enlightenment, truth and joy. Leave a gift in your will to the Nine Network. You can make sure that the next generation lives in the age of enlightened television—that they delight in learning with quality programs like Sesame Street and Sid the Science Kid, and that they become adults who are alive to the arts, their community, and the natural world around them. a daughter thrust into caregiving almost overnight, who learned how to provide medical services that would traditionally be taken on by a nurse. The film also captures how families cope with the financial burdens brought on by this often unanticipated responsibility. As author and journalist Jane Gross explains, “Your mother or your father better have a gazillion dollars, or by the time this is over, mom and dad are broke, and so are you.”

She has volunteered at Dr. Seuss’ Birthday Bash at the Magic House and packed Doc Martin bobbleheads to send to Nine members. “I like everything about volunteering here!” Beiber says. “The wonderful staff, the variety of duties, the fun environment, the flexibility and usually the chance to learn something new. And, the other volunteers are enjoyable and interesting to talk to. I’ve met people from all over St. Louis. We've Continued on page 16

As one of her volunteer jobs at Nine, Sallie Bieber points the way for station guests.

Another program on Nine also explores the parent-care issue. In his personal documentary Moving With Grace, former St. Louisan and NBC anchor Stone Phillips shares the dilemma he and his siblings faced when they chose to move their 90-something parents from their retirement community in Ballwin to one near their sister, a physician in North Carolina. The 30-minute program resonated with viewers when it initially aired on Nine PBS in 2013. It will be rebroadcast May 4 at 10:00 p.m., May 6 at 3:00 a.m. and May 18 at 1:00 a.m. (Please note that this program is not available for purchase or for viewing online. Viewers are welcome to record it for personal use.)

Volunteering Reignites Interests Sallie Bieber has always had a passion for media. She majored in telecommunications in college and later landed a job at a major radio station. Years later, as Bieber’s daughter was preparing to leave home for college herself, Bieber felt the time had come to reignite her interest in media by joining the Nine Network’s volunteer corps. Since 2012 she has volunteered during several live broadcasts including the national America After Ferguson town hall last September and the Washington Week town hall broadcast from the University of Missouri-St. Louis in 2012. Bieber, a member for more than 17 years, volunteers at Nine about twice a month and enjoys participating in non-broadcast activities, too. nineNet.org

Nine to Grow On St. Louis Students Star in National Series Last year, producers of the PBS children’s series SciGirls met with nearly 100 girls in the St. Louis area to find the best participants for a planned episode about frogs. One foursome of 12-year-olds from St. Roch School in the Central West End made a big impression. Producers said Alanna Hopson-Morris, Madison Fuller, Clara Barton and Amanda Willingham jumped out at them. The girls had been friends since kindergarten, and their longstanding friendship and comfort with one another signaled to producers that they would have a positive experience on a SciGirls investigation.

St. Louis Students (L-R) Amanda Willingham, Clara Barton, Madison Fuller and Alanna Hopson–Morris star in an episode of SciGirls.

“The audition process demonstrated how the girls naturally encourage and support each other’s learning and discovery—something that SciGirls is all about!” says executive producer Richard Hudson. “Each of them is incredibly bright, curious and determined—and their strong group dynamic made them shine as a team.”

In April 2014, the SciGirls production crew came to St. Louis and spent a week recording the Frog Whisperers episode of the series. The series challenges real middle school girls and their professional mentor to become citizen scientists by using skills in science, technology, engineering and math. Every episode features animated characters Izzie and Jake, who find themselves in sticky situations that can only be solved by the SciGirls. In their Frog Whisperers episode, Amanda, Alanna, Clara and Madison volunteer for FrogWatch USA, a citizen science project that invites nature lovers to report frog and toad calls within a specific area. With the guidance of their mentor, Laura Seger, the early childhood programs coordinator at the St. Louis Zoo, the girls learn to recognize the sounds of six local frog species. Then they pull on their boots and head out to the wetlands, ready to listen to frogs in their natural environment. They also hit city streets to listen to frogs in an urban habitat, and compare the two sites. Finally, the girls enter their data into the FrogWatch USA website, proud to submit their discoveries to researchers. And since they want to share their froggy findings with an even bigger audience, they present at the St. Louis Zoo, showing off a poster, a puppet show and even a rap. SciGirls airs Fridays at 4:30 p.m. beginning May 1. Frog Whisperers will be broadcast May 1 and June 12.

The St. Louis Zoo’s Laura Seger (L) leads Amanda (center) and Clara through frog habitat in wetlands.

Dream of Italy

Or, Dream of Ireland

Learn how winemakers produce true Chianti, meet a woman who raises cashmere goats, watch locals harvest saffron, discover the medicinal qualities of the hot springs in Piedmont, go into the crater of Mount Vesuvius and visit the kitchens of talented chefs. Dream of Italy, a new six-part series broadcast Sundays at 6:30 p.m. beginning May 17, journeys into the heart and soul of one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Italian travel expert Kathy McCabe explores six diverse areas of Italy—Naples/Amalfi, Puglia, Rome, Umbria, Tuscany and Piedmont—and meets Italy’s colorful chefs, artisans and historians who are preserving the traditions of their ancestors.

In his new series, award-winning Irish chef Kevin Dundon invites viewers to his four-star Dunbrody Country House and the beautiful countryside of Ireland to help home chefs master key culinary skills. In Kevin Dundon’s Back to Basics, broadcast Saturdays at 11:30 a.m. beginning May 23, Dundon demonstrates easy and straightforward cooking while offering step-by-step methods, hints, tips and tricks of the trade. Each episode covers a key ingredient, type of food or fundamental technique. Dundon prepares recipes for a variety of occasions and takes viewers behind the scenes at an organic farm, a flour mill, a cattle mart, a chocolate supplier and more.

Japanese American Lives Discover the richness of the Japanese American experience in this three-part series. The first episode profiles 99-year-old female judo master Keiko Fukuda. The next episode explores the music of two founders of the Asian American Jazz Movement, then tells the complex story of a Japanese immigrant family whose five sons fought on opposite sides during World War II. Olympic gold medalist Kristi Yamaguchi is featured in the final episode about Japanese Americans helping to rebuild Japan after the devastating 2011 tsunami. Saturday, May 2, 7:00 p.m., 8:00 p.m., 11:00 p.m. and midnight; Saturday, May 9, 7:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.

Homes on the Range: The New Pioneers In 2004, community leaders in Sheridan, Wyoming, watched a video depicting the very first Green House Project model built for elders in Tupelo, Mississippi. Faced with more retirees arriving in Sheridan, and more people with disabilities and frailties needing home care, a group of passionate citizens in the community established the first grassroots effort to create a nonprofit skilled nursing facility with the Green House philosophy in the United States. This film documents their 12-year journey to develop their vision without institutional support. In an article about the film and its concept, Jane Brody of The New York Times quotes a resident who says, “‘Even the most feeble or demented person can grow’ in the environment of a Green House.” Monday, May 25, 6:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.; Tuesday, May 26, 7:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.; Thursday, May 28, 4:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.; Saturday, May 30, 4:00 a.m.

In 2000, Antiques Roadshow came to St. Louis and recorded appraisals for 54 of the 5,500 people who showed up at America’s Center. Now the series looks back at highlights from those three St. Louis episodes to see whether anything has increased in value. Producers aren’t saying yet, but one item is now worth $75,000 to $100,000.

An everyday story about a young couple meeting, falling in love and going through life’s ups and downs plays out on stage at The Sheldon with an unusual angle: Real Washington University neurosurgeonscientists Albert Kim and Eric Leuthardt narrate the tale by explaining, step-by-step, what’s going on inside the couple’s brains. Kim and Leuthardt (pictured R-L) wrote the script; Patrick Murphy hosts and narrates additional profile and discussion segments.
