Dear Friends, Each year at our Pioneer Spirit Celebration we honor an individual or organization that epitomizes the qualities of our founders. It’s hard to imagine now that our founders’ concept for independent, non-commercial television was innovative and bold. But it was. They were true pioneers. And we are fortunate that they were driven by the noble purpose of strengthening our region with opportunities for learning and civic dialogue through public media. This year we honored the McDonnell family with our Pioneer Spirit Award. For decades, members of the McDonnell family and their foundations have supported science, education, medicine, character-building, public television, the arts, our American Graduate initiative, and so much more. And three members of the McDonnell family have served on our board of directors. We have been greatly inspired by the McDonnell family. You might be interested to know that in the 1940s James S. McDonnell became a close friend of Arthur Holly Compton, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist, chancellor of Washington University, and soon to become one of our founders. The two men shared many interests, but were particularly concerned about the use of technology for the public good. One of our earliest productions featured the two men along with UNESCO founder Julian Huxley in our studio discussing the program topic “Science and Human Responsibility.” We are rightly proud of our heritage. We are also proud to be helping lead the future of public media. We don’t need Emmy awards to tell us we’re great television, but we’re grateful for the local and national

recognition. So when we say we are more than television, we’re saying a lot. We’re a place of possibility! Speaking of great television, the keynote speaker for our Pioneer Spirit Celebration was Rebecca Eaton. She is not only synonymous with great television; she is often referred to as a television pioneer. Having been executive producer of Masterpiece since 1985, she is responsible for what could be the best programming in the history of television. She noted how particularly pleased she was to be in St. Louis—we have one of the nation’s largest audiences for Downton Abbey and other Masterpiece series. Yes, we’re great television. But we’re even more. We recently hosted the national meeting of the 34 public media organizations participating in the American Graduate initiative. The Public Media Commons, which has become such a popular destination, was recently recognized with two prestigious architectural awards. And, we just hosted science producers from across the country collaborating on the SciTech Now initiative, which includes our Science Matters series. I hope you know that your support is essential. With your help we can continue to make the Nine Network a place of possibility for our region. Thank you.

Nine Network producer Patrick Murphy explores Missouri’s inspirational landscape. In 1999, Nine Network producer Patrick Murphy rode his bicycle 200 miles across Missouri in a three-day marathon that he turned into a television special about the people, towns and scenery that could be found along the former railroad right-of-way known as the Katy Trail. Recently, over the past nine months, Murphy revisited roughly the same area, set south of the Missouri River and nearer the Mississippi River than the Kansas state line. Traveling by car at a more leisurely pace than 16 years ago, he took the time to explore farther afield, have longer conversations, watch the stunning scenery change from season to season and ultimately, witness how

the landscape influences people. That phenomenon is the heart of Where the Rivers Run, Murphy’s new, hour-long special debuting November 16. Using many aerial views shot in high definition from a drone by independent videographer Tony Carosella, Where the Rivers Run presents beautifully compelling images of Missouri’s forests, bluffs, prairies and rivers that make evident how the landscape serves as an inspiration to artists, chefs, farmers, vintners, scientists, environmentalists and naturalists. It shows a land shaped by rivers and the people who depend on both. “We humans tend to view the world as outsiders—as if nature is out there somewhere and we’re

not really a part of it,” says Murphy. “But there were moments with the camera crews in that beautiful countryside when I was taken with this feeling of being connected to it. If I can convey that feeling in this film, I will feel that I succeeded.” Where the Rivers Run begins historically by examining how the Missouri and Mississippi rivers carved valleys, drained plains and sustained life. They also provided transportation for travelers, immigrants and settlers, as well as a means to supply merchants upstream and for farmers to get their harvest to market downstream. Towns sprang up along the MissouriKansas-Texas railroad, which itself followed the river. These river and railroad towns are still thriving,

welcoming riders on the Katy Trail and visitors to wineries in Washington, Augusta and Herman. In New Haven, a community of artists has transformed the town, which now boasts a bed and breakfast establishment, a ukulele shop and a distillery that makes bourbon, scotch and vodka. Murphy interviews a wide range of people whose lives are intertwined with the land. Experts explain the geography and ecology of the region, how humans have changed it, and what people are doing to restore or conserve it. Among those interviewed are Quinn Long, Ph.D., an ecologist at Missouri Botanical Garden; Carol Davit, executive director, Missouri Prairie Foundation; Brian Canady, fisheries division chief, Missouri Department of Conservation; Bill Davit, a longtime prairie restorer; David Wilson, senior manager of environment and community planning, East West Gateway Council of Governments; farmer Rich Deppe; and James Weddle, CEO of Edward Jones, who discusses how Edward “Ted” Jones and his wife, Pat, donated the funds to establish the Katy Trail State Park. Artists show how Missouri’s landscape shapes their

creativity by sharing artwork that illustrates how they see the world. From watercolors to sculpture, the artists include Julie Weigand of Lyon, Missouri, Bryan Haynes of Labadie, and Marilynne Bradley of Webster Groves. Chefs demonstrate how Missouri farm products enhance their recipes and challenge their inventiveness. Catherine Neville, publisher of Feast magazine and host of Feast TV, discusses the locavore movement, and chefs Gerard Craft of Niche and Rob Beasley of Chaumette Winery and Vineyards reveal Missouri’s similarities to France—especially in the cheese produced by John and Veronica Baetje of Baetje Farms in Ste. Genevieve County. Missourians are fortunate to live in a beautiful, bountiful land surrounded by rivers, hills, cliffs, valleys, glades and forests. Some who live on the East or West coast think this is “flyover country.” Where the Rivers Run shows how much they are missing.

October marked the passing of former Nine board member and Video Nine chair Fred Arnold. He was a longtime supporter of Nine and held many leadership positions on the board, including several years as chair of the governance committee. He will be remembered by staff and fellow board members as a gentleman, statesman and wise counselor.

Meet the Board Janet Holloway As a St. Louis-area native, Monsanto’s Janet Holloway has seen the region grow into a hub of innovation and entrepreneurship— thanks in large part to collaborative organizations like the Nine Network. “The Nine Network is about more than great programming,” says Holloway, senior vice president of community relations and chief of staff at Monsanto. “It’s about making a real and positive impact—bringing the community together to advance initiatives that make St. Louis strong.”

That spirit of collaboration attracted Holloway to a position on the Nine Network’s board of directors in 2012. Holloway grew up in Edwardsville watching Nine programming, and later enjoyed it with her own children and parents. “There’s a multigenerational relationship with the network that’s very powerful,” says Holloway, who was Monsanto’s chief information officer prior to her current role. “Science and innovation play a major role in solving global issues, so I especially like the Science Matters program,” Holloway says. nineNet.org

Serving military families since 1981 We were, We are, We will be.

“I also feel strongly about Nine’s commitment to STEM education, which Monsanto shares. Focusing on STEM creates opportunities for future generations in St. Louis and can transform the area into a global center of excellence in innovation.”

Join the Legacy of Thanks Society

Holloway serves on the boards of directors for the United Way of Greater St. Louis, the St. Louis Regional Chamber and the Cortex Innovation Community.

Kathy Barney Nine Network board member Kathy Barney, who grew up as one of seven siblings, says her parents were always looking for education and entertainment options for their family, so they pointed their children toward public television. That early exposure made Barney very familiar with public broadcasting, and she’s maintained her high regard for it ever since.

In addition to enjoying national programs like Downton Abbey, Frontline, Lidia’s Kitchen, Antiques Roadshow and science shows, Barney likes the work the Nine Network does locally. “I see the local support for Nine, and I feel like a lot of good information comes from the community and for the community,” she says.

After joining the board in January, Barney volunteered to answer phones during the June membership drive and was impressed by the many people she met from all walks of life who donated their time to support Nine. The number of people who told her afterward that they spotted her on air also demonstrated Nine’s impact. “Our station has a stellar reputation here in the community,” she says, “because of the level of reporting, the quality of shows and the quality of productions.” Continued on page 14

Nine to Grow On

Above and below: Nature Cat characters Squeeks the mouse, Hal the dog, Daisy the rabbit and Nature Cat.

Saturday Night Live stars Taran Killam, Kate McKinnon, Bobby Moynihan and Kenan Thompson, plus well-known comic actress Kate Micucci from Scrubs and The Big Bang Theory, provide the voices for the new PBS Kids series Nature Cat, premiering Wednesday, November 25 at 7:00 a.m. (During its debut week, Nature Cat will also air November 26 and 27 at 7:00 a.m. and November 28 at 8:00 a.m. Beginning November 30, it airs Mondays and Wednesdays at 7:00 a.m.) Nature Cat follows Fred, a house cat who dreams of exploring the great outdoors. In each episode, once his family leaves for the day, Fred transforms into Nature Cat, a dashing feline Don Quixote and “backyard explorer extraordinaire.” Nature Cat can’t wait to get outside for a day of backyard nature excursions and bravery, but there’s one problem: He’s still a house cat with no instincts for nature. Like many of today’s kids, Nature Cat is eager and enthusiastic about outside activities, but is at times intimidated by them. With the help of his animal friends, Nature Cat embarks on actionpacked adventures that include exciting missions full of nature investigation, “aha” discovery moments and humor, all while inspiring children to go outside and play. 16

nineMagazine | November–December 2015

Killam voices Fred/Nature Cat, McKinnon is Squeeks the mouse, Moynihan plays Hal the dog, Thompson is fellow cat Ronald and Micucci plays Daisy the rabbit. Created by brothers Adam Rudman and David Rudman (who plays Cookie Monster and Baby Bear on Sesame Street, and Scooter and Janice on The Muppets), Nature Cat is designed for kids ages 3–8. It’s inspired by Richard Louv’s book Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature Deficit Disorder, which illustrates how seldom children today engage with the outdoors and explores the effects this limited exposure has on their emotional, mental and physical wellbeing. “With its hilarious voice talent, whimsical animation style and playful storylines, Nature Cat will engage and entertain families, while encouraging an interest in exploring nature,” says Lesli Rotenberg, general manager, children’s media, PBS. “PBS Kids uses the power of media to inspire children to go on learning adventures of their own, and this new series will help them discover the wonders that are as close as their own backyard or local park.” nineNet.org

The Last Ridge On a freezing winter night in February 1945, the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division accomplished the impossible: they scaled a 2,000-foot cliff in northern Italy to knock the seemingly invincible Germans from their impenetrable perch. This documentary recounts the story of the 10th Mountain Division, whose efforts turned the tide for the Allied forces in Italy, revolutionized winter mountain warfare and transformed winter sports. Narrated by Scott Simon, the documentary traces the 10th Mountain Division’s history from World War II to their current campaigns in Afghanistan.
