Dear Friends, This fall, we will recognize the Dana Brown Charitable Trust with our annual Pioneer Spirit Award. The award is particularly significant to us because it links our past with our present and our future. As members of the Nine Network, you know how much we value your support. In a real sense, you have not only given us critical financial support over the years, you also have been essential to our identity as a community organization. It is the strength of our identity with this community that drives our vision, our mission and our values. And when we say “community,” we mean the entire St. Louis region—even beyond the 100 Missouri and Illinois counties in our viewing area. Now don’t get me wrong. We want a lot of viewers. How can someone who isn’t a viewer benefit from our outstanding programming? But, viewership isn’t the only way we measure our success. We want our viewers to engage in our content, to learn, to be motivated, to become more active participants in civic life, and to effect positive change in our community.

We greatly appreciate your member support and your additional contributions. Both have enabled us to move forward over the years. We try hard to emulate our founders, who were true pioneers. They were futuristic, bold, visionary, innovative and willing to take risks. But they were also grounded in the present. That is why we work to find innovative ways to strengthen our community, particularly in the areas of education, health care, entrepreneurship, the environment and the arts. Next year, we celebrate the milestone of our 60th anniversary as St. Louis celebrates its 250th year. I can only say that we’ve all come a long, long way; but the best is yet to come! Thank you for your ongoing support and involvement with the Nine Network. Yours truly,

Jack Galmiche President and CEO Nine Network of Public Media

Most of us want to know we’re making a positive difference. And among the ways we do that is by supporting organizations we believe in. Some do it through regular contributions as you do with your member support. Those who are able, make additional contributions whenever they can. Others make bequest gifts by including the Nine Network in their wills. Many of you have also chosen to contribute to our Igniting the Spirit of Possibility capacitybuilding campaign.

egendary superstars don’t come much bigger than Barbra Streisand. Because she’s notoriously shy, sightings of the famed singer-actress are rare. Her television appearances are infrequent and constitute an event in themselves.

The program, broadcast November 24 at 7:00 p.m. and repeated November 26 at 1:00 a.m., November 28 at 7:30 p.m. and December 28 at 9:30 p.m., features comedic highlights from Burnett’s half-century in show business.

Mark your calendar for one such event. On Friday, November 29 at 8:00 p.m., the night belongs to Streisand when the Nine Network airs Barbra Streisand: Back to Brooklyn, a three-hour broadcast recorded during her 2012 Back to Brooklyn concert tour. (It’s repeated December 2 at 7:00 p.m. and December 31 at 8:30 p.m.)

Burnett’s television career started with appearances on Jack Parr’s, Ed Sullivan’s, Paul Winchell’s and Garry Moore’s shows. On September 11, 1967, her own program, The Carol Burnett Show, premiered on CBS. With a talented ensemble featuring Harvey Korman, Tim Conway, Vicki Lawrence and Lyle Waggoner, the show became a hit. Guest stars during its 11-year run included many of the greatest performers from music, stage and screen including Lucille Ball, Lana Turner, Rita Hayworth, Jimmy Stewart, Gloria Swanson, Ronald Reagan, Betty White, Cher, Jim Nabors, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, Liza Minnelli, Rock Hudson, Dick Van Dyke and Alan Alda. Burnett’s portrayal of “Starlet O’Hara” in “Went With the Wind,” a parody of Gone With the Wind, is always counted among the top 10 greatest moments in television history. The “curtain-rod” dress, as it is known, now resides at the Smithsonian.

Streisand makes a historic homecoming to Brooklyn at the Barclays Center arena, marking the superstar’s first Brooklyn concert since her childhood years. Joined by special guests Il Volo and Chris Botti, Streisand performs an extensive selection of songs from throughout her five-decade career, including a touching duet of “How Deep Is the Ocean” with her son, Jason Gould. Like Barbra, another female entertainer who needs no last name is Carol—as in Carol Burnett. The comedic icon and all-around performing legend is the guest of honor when, for the 16th year, the comedy world convenes in Washington, D.C., to toast this year’s recipient of the Kennedy Center’s Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. The all-star cast for Carol Burnett: The Mark Twain Prize includes Julie Andrews, Lucie Arnaz, Tony Bennett, Tim Conway, Tina Fey, Rashida Jones, Vicki Lawrence, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Martin Short and Rosemary Watson. nineNet.org

Nearly a dozen stars including Neil Patrick Harris, Stephen Colbert, Jon Cryer, Patti LuPone, Christina Hendricks and Martha Plimpton come together for the New York Philharmonic’s concert staging of Stephen Sondheim’s awardwinning musical Company. Captured from the stage of Avery Fisher Hall at New York’s Lincoln Center

for the Performing Arts, the musical will air on November 8 at 10:00 p.m. and again on November 10 at 1:30 p.m. Set in a swinging New York City evocative of the time of the show’s 1970 Broadway debut, Company follows perennial bachelor Robert (Harris) on the occasion of his 35th birthday as his five married couple friends gather to celebrate and offer varying degrees of relationship advice. Their interactions are presented in a series of vignettes, primarily through Robert’s eyes. The show’s many Sondheim standards include “Company,” “Side by Side by Side,” “The Ladies Who Lunch,” “Another Hundred People,” “Barcelona” and “Being Alive.” When Company first opened on Broadway, produced and directed by Harold Prince, the show ran for 705 performances and received 1971 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Lyrics, Best Set Design and Best Direction of a Musical, among 14 nominations. For some fans of Hugh Jackman, just the fact that he was selected one of People magazine’s “50 Most

The documentary uses Hendrix’s own words to tell his story, illustrated through archival interviews and illuminated with commentary from family, well-known friends and musicians, including Paul McCartney, Steve Winwood, Vernon Reid, Billy Gibbons, Dweezil Zappa and Dave Mason, and band members Noel Redding, Mitch Mitchell and Billy Cox. The film also features revealing glimpses through interviews with the three women closest to Hendrix: Linda Keith (the girlfriend who introduced him to future manager Chas Chandler), Faye Pridgon (who befriended Hendrix in Harlem in the early 1960s) and Colette Mimram (who provided inspiration for Hendrix’s signature look and created such memorable stage costumes as the beaded

Nine Networking Remembering JFK “Where were you when you heard that President Kennedy was asassinated?” is an iconic question asked and answered by Americans ever since that era-changing day in November 1963. For anyone who can reply to that query with a personal story, here’s another question: Can you believe it’s been 50 years? Several specials broadcast on Nine in November commemorate the passing of John F. Kennedy from very different perspectives. American Experience explores Kennedy’s life; Nova compares the forensic science techniques used to investigate his death with methods used today; and Secrets of the Dead examines how the story of that day unfolded in CBS-TV’s national newsroom. American Experience: JFK is a new four-hour, two-part special broadcast Monday and Tuesday, November 11 and 12 at 8:00 p.m. (repeated Wednesday and Thursday, November 13 and 14 at 2:00 a.m.; and Sunday, November 17 at 1:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m.). This new portrait, part of American Experience’s Emmy and Peabody award-winning series The Presidents, offers a fresh assessment of the man, his accomplishments and his unfulfilled promise.

Sen. John F. Kennedy in Boston in 1957.

Beginning with Kennedy’s childhood years as the privileged but sickly second son of one of the wealthiest men in America, the film explores his early political career as a lackluster congressman and the game-changing presidential campaign that made him the youngest elected president in U.S. history. JFK offers new perspectives on his complicated private life and reevaluates Kennedy’s strengths and weaknesses in the Oval Office as he navigated some of the most explosive events of the 20th century.

Davis has always admired the Nine Network for being one of the only independent TV stations left in St. Louis, and she wants to “help keep that independent voice alive.” Davis dislikes reality TV and the fact that so many stations are now owned by “big money corporations.” In addition to supporting Nine by volunteering, since 2000, Davis has also contributed her membership support. As a volunteer, Davis assists with clerical tasks, stuffs envelopes and participates in pledge drives. She also helps with events like the Dr. Seuss Birthday Bash. Davis enjoys being able to spend her free time giving back to the community and supporting the TV station that has always been her favorite. Davis appreciates the kindness and gratitude she is shown for her hard work as a volunteer. She continues to volunteer, Davis says, because “everyone is so friendly, and it is such a positive environment.” When she is not volunteering, Davis can be found working her parttime job at a gift shop in historic St. Charles, or spending time with her grandchildren. Davis feels the hours she volunteers is time well spent, and she hopes to continue contributing to Nine for many years to come. Sunday Arts at One One year is hardly enough time to do justice to all of the amazing art being produced every day in the U.S., but in one short year the Nine PBS series Sunday Arts has attempted to do just that. The Nine Network has always been focused on the arts, and the addition of Sunday Arts in November 2012 is yet another example of Nine’s dedication to increasing awareness of the arts. nineNet.org

Patrick Murphy on location for Sunday Arts in front of Powell Hall.

The series aims to highlight art in our community locally and nationally, and on the one-year anniversary of Sunday Arts, here’s a look back to acknowledge the program’s accomplishments in its first 12 months on the air. The stories featured on Sunday Arts come from a collaborative of 30 PBS stations nationwide, including the Nine Network, that pools and shares the best arts segments from each community. Many Sunday Arts stories originating from St. Louis have aired nationally this year. Among them are: a profile of photographer Michael Eastman, a look at the Progress of Love exhibition at the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts, a visit to the AKC Museum of the Dog, and a tour of the Kemper Museum’s Georges Braque exhibition. Other notable local stories on Sunday Arts explored art at Lambert Airport, the St. Louis Shakespeare Festival, Leslie Laskey’s exhibition at the Bruno David Gallery, the Moto Museum, and Delta blues artist Big George Brock. After a great first year, the future of Sunday Arts looks bright. Other St. Louis arts segments have already been accepted for national distribution in the coming year. —Amanda Christian

A screen grab from the OVEE website.

Community Cinema There’s something new at the Nine Network’s Community Cinema screenings. Actually, there are two new features to the monthly previews of Independent Lens documentaries shown at the Missouri History Museum. Now, Community Cinema will come directly to schools and community groups for special screenings. Groups can request either a full feature or a short-form film module that includes a standards-based lesson plan to promote discussion and involvement in key social issues explored in the documentaries.

PNC ARTS ALIVE KEEPING THE ARTS THRIVING We know what art can do, how it changes perspectives, even changes lives. That’s why the PNC Foundation has extended its commitment to the arts with PNC Arts Alive in the Greater St. Louis area. This sixyear, $2-million initiative supports the visual and performing arts. From classical music to film to dance and theater, we’re committed to keeping the arts alive. To learn more about this initiative, go to pncartsalive.com.

Nine to Grow On

Camera and sound technician Edward Calvey (L), Feast Magazine publisher Catherine Neville (center) and director Hannah Radcliff prepare to record a Feast TV segment in Neville’s kitchen.

New St. Louis-Based Cooking Series Since its debut in August 2010, Feast Magazine, a St. Louisbased food and lifestyle publication, has produced cooking demos and profile videos to complement its print edition, but the editors always felt there were deeper stories to be told. In January 2013, publisher Catherine Neville approached the team at Feast with the idea of creating a half-hour, magazine-style show that was driven by the print edition’s content. Immediately, they began shooting and editing Feast TV. It airs on the first Saturday of the month on Nine PBS beginning November 2 at 2:00 p.m. and will be rebroadcast Mondays at 1:00 p.m. Neville and director Hannah Radcliff work closely with editors Kristin Brashares and Liz Miller to craft the show’s flow and perspective, with the aim of educating viewers while entertaining and inspiring them to explore St. Louis food. “The show allows us to share the richness of what’s happening here in St. Louis in a vibrant way,” says Neville. “Bringing content to life through this medium lets viewers meet the farmers, the chefs, the brewers and wine makers who make up our culinary industry. The show connects the audience directly with the stories that we’re telling.” Each month, Emmy-winning Feast TV uncovers our region’s deliciously rich diversity through in-depth segments covering a wide array of culinary content. Neville hosts Feast TV in her LaSalle Park home kitchen, introducing the nineNet.org

segments and conducting a cooking demo that progresses throughout the show, tying all of the elements together. Inspired by Feast’s print features, the show brings the pages of the magazine to life. Feast TV offers viewers unique content, all focused on the people and places that help to define the St. Louis food scene. The show’s crew has driven deep into the heart of the Ozark Mountains to visit an artisan shiitake mushroom farm; climbed aboard a fishing boat in Pensacola, Florida, to go deep-sea fishing with Farmhaus’ Kevin Willmann; learned the secrets to crafting perfect cocktails with mixologist Matt Seiter; and discovered the impact of Prohibition on Missouri’s wine industry from Adam Puchta Winery’s fourthgeneration wine maker Tim Puchta. Every show brings fresh content and a unique spin on the stories Feast’s writers, photographers and editors uncover each month. The November episode is a turkey-day boot camp, totally focused on ensuring that the “foodiest” of American holidays is flawless and fun. Just in time for the holiday season, December is all about sweets, with insight and instruction from St. Louis’ best bakers and candy makers. In January, Feast TV will introduce the region’s key players and tastemakers and give insight into what’s driving the success of our local food scene. All episodes can be viewed online after broadcast at feastSTL.com. Join us at the table each month to explore and experience St. Louis’ food culture through the journalistic lens of the editors behind Feast. nineMagazine | November–December 2013

Leave the gift of enlightenment, truth and joy. Leave a gift in your will to the Nine Network. Judy and Harvey Harris have included the Nine Network in their wills. They are longtime members and major donors, and Harvey has served on the Nine Network’s Board of Directors for many years.

Judy and I have been viewers and supporters of what is now the Nine Network of Public Media for as long as we can remember. It has been my honor to serve on the Board of Directors, where I have had the opportunity to play an active role in assuring that this great asset to our region gets better every day. We can’t imagine life in our region over the last 60 years with Nine. We came of age with it. Our children and grandchildren grew up on it. And we’re still avid viewers. This is an important legacy for us to leave all the children and adults in our region. — Harvey Harris
