Dear Friends, Most of you know us primarily by the programs you watch on our four channels. But we have a great team of staff, volunteers and interns working behind the scenes to provide the programs and services you value. That’s why we’re always eager for the opportunity to meet you face-toface—whether here at the Nine Network or out in the community. So I hope to see you at one of our upcoming events! Please join us in the Public Media Commons September 4 at 7:00 p.m. to watch City of Music on the big screen. Our two-hour documentary was filmed at the Sheldon Concert Hall and features some of St. Louis’ top musicians with singer and recording artist Brian Owens as host. And we hope you will stop by our booth at the St. Louis Art Fair in Clayton September 11–13. It’s a chance for you to meet our producers and other staff as well as our volunteers. Then in September and October we continue our series of three events in partnership with Feast Magazine to present two more Feast TV Taste & See events with video, live music and local foods and beverages. On September 18 the theme is Craft Beer and Charcuterie; on October 16 the theme is Southern and Comfort Foods. These ticketed events are sponsored by Wells Fargo Advisors LLC. And, on September 28, we’re presenting the third in our Live in the Commons series featuring Trombones of the St. Louis Symphony. This wonderful free series has been supported by a grant from the Whitaker Foundation. By the way, if you have children or grandchildren, come at 7:00 p.m. to give them a chance to explore musical instruments in the Symphony’s Instrument Playground before the concert, which begins at 7:30 p.m. And, there’s more to come. So visit nineNet.org and publicmediacommons.org to learn more about our programs, services and events. Or, you can give us a call or send us an email. Remember, we have a team ready to help. And we want to meet you! Yours truly,

Truly a legend in his own time, American Experience explores the imaginative life of Walt Disney.
American Experience offers an unprecedented look at the life and legacy of one of America’s most enduring and influential storytellers in Walt Disney, a new two-part, fourhour film narrated by actor Oliver Platt and premiering in September. The film features rare footage from the Disney archives; scenes from some of his greatest films; and interviews with biographers, historians, animators and artists
who worked on Snow White and other early films, and designers who helped create Disneyland.
small farm in Marceline, Missouri, a place he would go on to immortalize as the symbol of idyllic childhood.
From Steamboat Willie to Pinocchio and Mary Poppins, Disney’s movies grew out of his own life experiences. He told stories of outsiders struggling for acceptance and belonging, while questioning the conventions of class and authority. As Disney rose to prominence and gained financial security, his work became increasingly celebratory of the American way of life that made his unlikely success possible.
An artist and cartoonist in his youth, Walt Disney was only 17 when he returned from World War I and moved to Kansas City, landing a job as a commercial artist and soon starting his own animation studio. Although Laugh-O-Grams went bankrupt, Disney was undeterred, moving to Los Angeles to join brother Roy and break into the booming Hollywood movie business. Before long, the Disney Brothers Studio was churning out a new short every 16 Disney days. In 1966, the year Walt Disney died, 240 million people saw a Disney movie, 100 million tuned in to a Disney television program, 80 million bought Disney merchandise, and close to 7 million visited Disneyland. Few creative figures before or since have held such a long-lasting place in American life and popular culture.
saw another stream of revenue in Mickey’s popularity—licensed merchandise.
Disney passed away at the age of 65 on December 14, 1966, from lung cancer. He won 29 Oscars—more than anyone else in history—and received four Emmys and the Irving Thalberg Award. Walt Disney includes interviews with artists who worked at the studio, including Rolly Crump, Robert Givens, Don Lusk, Floyd Norman and Ruthie Tompson, Imagineer Marty Sklar, Disney producer Don Hahn, costume designer Alice M. Davis, composer Richard M. Sherman, son-in-law Ron Miller, and academics and authors who have written extensively about Walt Disney including Neal Gabler, Susan Douglas, Richard Schickel,

A polarizing figure—though true believers vastly outnumber his critics—Disney’s achievements are indisputable. He created one of the most beloved cartoon characters in history, Mickey Mouse; conceived the first-ever featurelength animated film; pioneered the integration of media and marketing with thousands of branded products; and conceived Disneyland, the world’s first theme park and a three-dimensional realization of his own utopian universe.

Steven Watts, Ron Suskind and Carmenita Higginbotham. “Oftentimes, the character that’s at the center of Disney’s work is an outsider, an underdog of sorts, who is trying in a way to buck the system and find their way,” says American Experience Executive Producer Mark Samels. “I think Walt Disney really saw himself that way. He was a cartoonist from the Midwest who ends up in Hollywood. He’s not part of the inner circle. He really saw himself as standing apart from the power structure. He considered himself an artist first and foremost, and for much of his career he was."

By 1940, the Screen Cartoonists Guild had organized every studio except the Walt Disney Studio. Believing he had the right to run his company as he saw fit, Disney’s attitude alienated workers, who overwhelmingly voted to strike.
On May 29, 1941, Disney drove through a picket line with more than 200 workers—some of whom were his most trusted animators. Disney felt betrayed, not able to understand how people who worked for him could be unhappy; years later he called them “communists” before the House Un-American Activities Committee.

Despite the success he achieved, Disney was driven and restless, a demanding perfectionist on whom decades of relentless work and chain-smoking would take their toll. He wanted his films to make people feel deeply, yet often buried his own emotions. Aspiring to create great artistic films, he felt he wasn’t taken seriously by the movie industry, and was stung when critics panned his productions, such as Fantasia. Never satisfied with his previous efforts, he always pushed forward to a “new adventure,” but his attention to detail and quest for innovation frequently meant delays and cost overruns.

Disney then focused on his next obsession: creating the first-ever, feature-length, story-driven cartoon based on the tale of Snow White. A huge artistic and financial gamble, Disney was determined to elevate animation to the level of dramatic feature films. His perfectionism slowed the pace of production but the gamble payed off. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs grossed $8 million in its first year—the equivalent of over $100 million today.

Framed by the beginning and end of the summer season, when India’s British rulers left the hot plains for the cool slopes of Simla, Indian Summers centers on three brother-sister pairs: Ralph Whelan, the private secretary to the British Viceroy of India, and Alice, his beautiful younger sister who appears suddenly from England with her child; Aafrin Dalal, an idealistic clerk, and his sister Sooni, who threatens his career by agitating for national independence; and two adrift Americans, Eugene Mathers, an expatriate from a wealthy Chicago family, and his seductive sister, Madeline. While illicit encounters and forbidden affairs abound, off stage Gandhi has been arrested and is staging a hunger strike, exerting pressure that renders the world’s greatest empire helpless.

Meet the Board Hugh Scott Before joining the Nine Network’s board of directors, retired investment banker Hugh Scott said he already loved the Nine Network’s local and national shows, but in a meeting with President and CEO Jack Galmiche, he was fascinated to discover the extent of Nine’s role in the community, from American Graduate to the Public Media Commons. nineNet.org
“As a public, not-for-profit organization, Nine is obligated to the community to provide programs and services,” says Scott. “It’s important that we fulfill that role as part of the Public Broadcasting Service of St. Louis.”
Second Presbyterian Church in St. Louis announces the 2015 Pfautch Lectures
In addition to Nine, Scott reflects his interest in community service by volunteering on the boards of St. Luke’s Hospital, Grand Center and Bellefontaine Cemetery. He’s also on the board of Waterway Car Wash and on U.S. Bank’s regional advisory board, among many others. His favorite programs on Nine are Donnybrook, Doc Martin, PBS NewsHour and Masterpiece presentations such as Downton Abbey and Mr. Selfridge. “I support Nine because, number one, I like the programming, and two, it’s important to have public broadcasting in St. Louis,” Scott emphasizes. “That the Nine Network has gotten so prominent nationally is a credit to Jack [Galmiche] and to St. Louis audiences.” He continues, “Nine means a lot to the community because it’s the only local, nonprofit, public broadcasting outlet. We can do what out-of-town, commercial stations can’t do.”

He’s passionate about public television programming because it gives access to information delivered without bias. “I look to Nine Network— its presentation is honest and reflects many viewpoints that allow me to form my own opinions,” Lower says. He also supports Nine because of its active participation in community engagement, facilitating discussions
and providing a forum to bring people together. “Nine is a national leader on this, and community engagement will become increasingly more important in the years ahead,” he says. “In this country we are living in a time of cultural disruption and upheaval,” Lower continues, “because different cultures and generations value things differently. The only way to make life as harmonious as possible is to be in dialogue. I feel Nine has a calling and mission to foster that dialogue.”

Volunteer Robert Simon.
A Dedicated Volunteer Robert Simon is full of life and experience. Two years ago, he began volunteering at the Nine Network, typically working at the front desk to greet guests for Donnybrook receptions and Stay Tuned. “Whenever there is an opportunity, I’m in,” he says. Simon enjoys meeting fellow volunteers and is passionate about Nine’s educational value. “I’m a believer in education and that’s what Nine is,” he says. In addition to working with the Nine Network, Simon has an extensive volunteer resume. He previously volunteered at the Humane Society, United Way and The Salvation Army, as well as for the equipment manager of the St. Louis Rams. His proudest accomplishment came from volunteering at a veterans hospital in Florida. He cherished the countless hours he spent helping veterans and their families and was touched by how much they appreciated his service. Simon never felt the need to keep track of his hours because he loved the work, so when he left the hospital, he was surprised to receive a certificate that honored him for serving a total of 1,880 hours. Simon is retired from UPS, where he worked in tech support, and enjoys spending time with his siblings, nieces and nephews. He loves walking his dog, flying his drone and maintaining his Lemay home. Simon grew up watching Nine programs such as Sesame Street and now enjoys Nine Network specials. Simon says, “Volunteers are special people,” and given his service, he could not be more accurate. —Mattie Eversole nineNet.org
As a math teacher and Sunday school teacher, Doris Wolff inspired her students to learn and to acquire values that would be important throughout their lives. When she provided for the Nine Network through her will, she touched even more lives than those who had the fortune of being her students.
“The future belongs, not to those who have the most, but to those who do the most with what they have.”
—Eugene P. Odum

You can make sure that the next generation lives in the age of enlightened television—that they delight in learning with quality programs like Sesame Street and Sid the Science Kid, and that they become adults who are alive to the arts, their community, and the natural world around them. Nine to Grow On I’ll Have What Phil’s Having
Rosenthal is a food enthusiast, but as he was growing up, he was not exposed to any adventurous eating. Rosenthal says, “My mother was not a fantastic cook. Our oven had a setting for ‘shoe.’ But I’ve always loved family, food, travel and humor. That’s how I connect with people. I'm not your typical adventurer. So, I’m hoping folks will look at a nebbish like me exploring the world and trying new things and say, ‘If that guy can go outside maybe I can, too.’”
WGBH
In each hour-long episode, the unscripted series brings Rosenthal on funny, unforgettable travels all over the world, from Hong Kong to Barcelona, Paris and Tokyo, and from a three-star Michelin restaurant in an Italian palazzo to a Los Angeles bakery training former gang members.

Lily Rosenthal
Phil Rosenthal, the creator of the TV hit Everybody Loves Raymond, and one of Hollywood’s funniest producers, finds plenty of comedy in food. He pushes the boundaries of his palate in his new, six-part series I’ll Have What Phil’s Having, airing Mondays at 9:00 p.m. beginning September 28. (It repeats Wednesdays at 3:00 a.m. beginning September 30 and Saturdays at 11:00 a.m. beginning October 10.)
(Clockwise from top left) Rosenthal munches an eclair; helps out at the Home Boy Bakery and Home Girl Cafe in Los Angeles; and persuses a food stall in Barcelona.
The first episode takes Rosenthal to Tokyo, where he gamely crunches a grilled eel’s head in a narrow eatery off an alley and dines at an upscale restaurant where the chef creates complex nature scenes with food and embeds plates with a speaker playing live sounds from a forest. Rosenthal calls over the show’s producer, his brother Richard, to sample unbelievably tasty chestnut and yuzu ice cream. At a department store that would make Harry Selfridge proud, the abundance of choices on the food floor makes Rosenthal lament, “I’m starting to get anxiety because I want everything!” At a sushi restaurant in operation since 1935, he explains to viewers who might be leery of raw fish, “Lox is the gateway sushi.” In the Los Angeles episode, guests including Allison Janney, Ray Romano, Martin Short, Paul Reiser and Larry Wilmore share in Rosenthal’s discoveries while trying some food for the first time. Rosenthal lives in Los Angeles, with his wife, actress Monica Horan (who played Amy on Everybody Loves Raymond), and their two children. His series Everybody Loves Raymond won 15 Emmy Awards, and Rosenthal has also won a Writers Guild Award for Excellence in Television Writing and a Peabody Award.

World-renowned chef, author, television host and philanthropist Jose Andres gives an unprecedented glimpse into the dynamic culture, people and stunning landscape of Haiti in the hour-long special Undiscovered Haiti With Jose Andres airing Sunday, September 13 at 10:00 a.m. While Haiti has in recent years been portrayed primarily via images of the devastation wrought by the 2010 earthquake, it has long been one of the lush jewels of the Caribbean. Much of the country escaped the brunt of the damage. Andres brings this vibrant side of Haiti alive, exploring historic sites such as the Citadel and a 150-year-old rum factory, making cassava bread and joining midnight gatherings with vodou priests. Along the way, he meets special guests including former president Bill Clinton and chef Mario Batali.

Grace Taylor Broughton Sculpture Garden Designed by Michel Desvigne, the sculpture garden completes the Museum’s recent expansion project, which includes the new East Building designed by Sir David Chipperfield that opened in 2013. The sculpture garden and an endowment to fund its upkeep are made possible by a gift from Barbara B. and Andrew C. Taylor. The garden is named in honor of their granddaughter, Grace Taylor Broughton.
