Dear Friends, We are honored that PBS NewsHour Weekend anchor Hari Sreenivasan will join us the weekend of September 17 and 18 to broadcast from the Nine Network. His Saturday broadcast will be the culminating program of national American Graduate Day and the week-long PBS “Spotlight Education,” featuring programs about America's students and new models of learning. On Sunday, Hari Sreenivasan’s broadcast will focus on the election and political perspectives from the heartland. We are more than half way to our goal of raising $50 million in this campaign—the first capacity building campaign in our history. The campaign is truly “capacity building” in that we are raising support to enable us to continue our community impact work, update our facility and infrastructure, and support our future fund.

PBS NewsHour Weekend Broadcasts from St. Louis wo important public media initiatives— American Graduate and coverage of the 2016 presidential election—will be the focus of PBS NewsHour Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, September 17 and 18, when anchor Hari Sreenivasan broadcasts from the Nine Network of Public Media.
evaluation validates the value of public media’s commitment to this kind of work. Community partners have been an integral part of American Graduate by helping participating public media stations ensure that station efforts are aligned with local challenges, solutions, and priorities.
The focus of the Saturday evening show will be on education after a week of special national PBS programming, known as Spotlight Education Week, culminates on American Graduate Day. Sreenivasan will report from St. Louis on the various ways schools and teachers are trying to improve student performance and engagement. On Sunday, the focus will be on the 2016 election with perspectives from the heartland.
In a recent survey, partners indicated their overwhelming appreciation of public media.
Hari Sreenivasan, PBS NewsHour Weekend anchor and PBS NewsHour senior correspondent, considers the role of independent, noncommercial media to be critically important. “It’s the public square in the truest sense of the word,” he says. “It’s where you can hear intelligent people disagree…and exchange ideas without fear.” He says that commercial media is in the audience business, which heightens drama and contributes to polarity. “This is not what public media is charged with doing,” he shares. “We still believe an informed electorate is key to democracy.” The national and local American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen initiative is being led by the Nine Network and is an example of public media’s long-term commitment to education, particularly for young people. The initiative has been helping public media organizations partner with nearly 1,700 community organizations to help keep youth on track to earn a high school diploma and succeed well beyond high school. The American Graduate initiative has seen many successes in the five years since it began, but a recent, comprehensive 4

• 100% said they valued public media’s expertise in production, communications and marketing, which helped raise awareness of issues and increased participation in programs. • 94% said they valued public media’s reach. • 83% said they valued public media’s resources. • 77% said the partnership enhanced engagement between their organization and the community. Also essential is the support from American Graduate Champions. We have learned that one of the most significant contributions to keeping students on the path to graduation is the role that caring, consistent adults play in providing support, encouragement, and the skills students need to stay in school. On September 10, the Nine Network will recognize three local American Graduate Champions for their mentorship and guidance to St. Louis-area students. The recognition event will be held in conjunction with the Nine Network’s Storytime in the Commons, a partnership with St. Louis Public Library (see page 13). The Nine Network is proud to recognize early childhood champions and to elevate the importance of early learning through events like Storytime in the Commons. nineNet.org
American Graduate Champions Sylvester “Sunshine” Lee has mentored youth in East St. Louis, Illinois, for more than 30 years. Lee established the Community Performance Ensemble in 1978 to provide performance arts training focused on African dance and drumming. The ensemble has taught hundreds of young people about African music, dance, and culture. Lee has instilled in them his core principles of pride, respect, love, and dedication. He currently serves 45-50 individuals in an after-school program, has helped many community members get jobs, and 100% of the ensemble participants graduate. Sarita Moody has always supported the development of young people. Before joining inspireSTL as community outreach coordinator and scholars coach, Moody worked with children from birth to four years at University City Children’s Center, where she learned firsthand the importance of a quality education in early childhood development. At inspireSTL, she provides academic guidance and mentorship to scholars to ensure they Sarita become lifelong leaders Moody in their communities. Marlon Wharton, and the late Paul Albea, founded Gentlemen of Vision (GOV), a mentoring organization and national champion step team in St. Louis whose members have a 100% high school graduation rate. Many of the young men in GOV see Wharton not only as a coach, but also as a father figure, role model, and support system. He connects the young men to college scholarship opportunities and helps them plan for their futures, while also providing emotional support and encouragement as they struggle to overcome difficult personal circumstances. Marlon Wharton
As the nation closes in on the goal of increasing the graduation rate to 90% by the year 2020, the continued need for American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen is even clearer. Public media will continue working with community partners and community members to improve youth outcomes. To learn more about American Graduate, visit nineNet.org/americangraduate. nineNet.org
Hari Sreenivasan
The Nine Network Welcomes NewsHour Weekend As Spotlight Education Week culminates with American Graduate Day on September 17, Hari Sreenivasan and PBS NewsHour Weekend will be at the Nine Network to broadcast from St. Louis. The show will look at the various ways schools and teachers are trying to improve student performance and engagement. Sreenivasan has been involved with the Nine Network as cohost of American Graduate Day 2015, through his work on the NewsHour special, After Ferguson, and as a host of SciTech Now. In an interview for nineMagazine, Hari talked about some of the issues surrounding education and the upcoming election. Sreenivasan takes a personal interest in the goals of the American Graduate initiative to improve graduation rates and future outcomes for young people. “The potential of our education system is amazing,” he says. “You have the capacity to get a free education through high school, and even higher education, in this country.” He adds that this capacity is one of the reasons his family immigrated to the United States from Mumbai (then Bombay), India, when he was seven. Sreenivasan says that initiatives like American Graduate are absolutely necessary and that when students do not graduate, society and the economy suffer. “The statistics on graduation rates are far from where they need to be.” The American Graduate initiative helps students seize their potential by staying in school. Politics is often personal, particularly in a presidential election year. He says that local issues for parents might be the quality of schools; whereas for retirees it might be social security and Medicare. Sreenivasan says that the concerns of the electorate in the Midwest are not red or blue, he says, but rather purple. The heartland has the same concerns as everyone else, he says, “the economy and the slow recovery, fears of terrorist attacks, and pocketbook issues like how to pay for higher education and health care.” nineMagazine | September–October 2016

The Nine Network proudly presents previews of Hamilton’s America and the PBS Arts Fall Festival in the Public Media Commons on October 7. Join us for a look at the making of the wildly successful Broadway production of Hamilton and an enticing glimpse at arts programming you will not want to miss (see page 12). Defying the Nazis Screening The Nine Network and the Holocaust Museum and Learning Center, a department of the Jewish Federation of St. Louis, have partnered to present a 30-minute screening of the new documentary Defying the Nazis: The Sharps’ War. Codirector, and the Sharp’s grandson, Artemis Joukowsky will appear via Skype after the preview to discuss the film. Codirected by Ken Burns and Joukowsky, the film chronicles a little-known but important mission by an American minister and his wife to rescue refugees and dissidents in Europe before and after the start of World War II. The 90-minute film, which airs Tuesday, September 20, 8:00–9:30 p.m. on Nine PBS, tells the story of Waitstill and Martha Sharp, a Unitarian minister and his wife from Wellesley, Massachusetts, who left their children behind in the care of their parish and nineNet.org
boldly committed to multiple lifethreatening missions in Europe. Over two dangerous years they helped to save hundreds of imperiled political dissidents and Jewish refugees fleeing the Nazi occupation across Europe. Defying the Nazis is cinematically told through the letters and journals of the Sharps, with Tom Hanks as the voice of Waitstill and Marina Goldman as the voice of Martha. It features firsthand interviews with the now adult children, whom the Sharps saved, as well as leading historians, authors and Holocaust scholars. ATTEND: Defying the Nazis Screening Tuesday, September 13, 7:00 p.m. Nine Network, Studio A 3655 Olive St., St. Louis
The Best of the Arts The Nine Network believes the arts enrich the human spirit, create vibrant and healthy communities and should be available to everyone—regardless of their circumstances—to experience and enjoy. So, every fall, we give you a front-row seat, and behind the scenes look, at classic Broadway hits, music, dance and theater. This year, the 2016 PBS Arts Fall Festival kicks off with a special on the making of the Broadway phenomenon, “Hamilton.” The show’s Tony- and Grammy Awardwinning creator and star, Lin-Manuel Miranda, will host this year’s festival. “I'm such a huge fan of PBS. For my entire life it’s been our window into a world of the arts that isn’t available anywhere else on TV,” says Lin-Manuel Miranda. "This year’s PBS Arts Fall Continued on page 12

New on Nine Election Special Examines Complex Electorate The power and influence of ArabAmericans, Black Millennials, Latino Evangelicals, and Asian-Americans in the 2016 elections will be examined on America by the Numbers with Maria Hinojosa (ABTN). The one-hour election special titled “The New Deciders” will air on Tuesday, September 6, at 9:00 p.m. “Americans trust public media to explore the issues that matter most and to provide in-depth and thoughtful coverage from diverse perspectives,” says Marie Nelson, Vice President News and Public Affairs at PBS. “‘The New Deciders’ offers an unexpected look at the changing demographic shifts in our country, and what it could mean— not only for the current election— but for the future of our nation.” “The deciders in this year’s presidential election will be young people and citizens of color,” says Hinojosa. “The racial, cultural and social landscape of America continues to change rapidly and we need to pay attention to the growing numbers of youth, Asians, Latinos, AfricanAmericans, persons of mixed race and immigrants who are registering to vote, becoming politically engaged, and increasingly, will be determining the outcomes of elections.” Researchers and political observers say demographics cannot be ignored in electoral politics, and ABTN will track the link between population change and voting. ABTN will explore individual communities and demographic groups that are redefining the electoral landscape in 2016 through four segments: Arab-Americans Fight Islamophobia through the Ballot Traveling to Cleveland, Ohio, ABTN will explore how the growing ArabAmerican population in the U.S. is countering the rise of anti-Muslim rhetoric heard on the campaign trail by 20

becoming more involved in electoral politics. ABTN will follow leaders in the Arab-American community in Cleveland to report how, in response to vitriolic sloganeering and threats of bans and deportations, Muslim and Christian voters of Arab descent are finding their political voice. Black Millennials: Do Not Count on Us or Count Us Out! ABTN will look at the ways millennials are participating in politics by focusing on some of the most politically engaged youth in the country— African-Americans in North Carolina. In 2012, African-Americans in this swing state had the highest voter turnout of any voters in the nation. ABTN will profile black millennials on both sides of the political spectrum who say they are continuing the civil rights tradition and are building diverse coalitions to tackle local issues such as voting rights. ABTN will also examine if major political parties are taking notice. Latino Evangelicals: The Unpredictable Evangélico Vote Latino Evangelicals, also known as “Evangélicos,” number at least 6 million and are growing into a

powerful political force that is being courted by both parties. With Florida as the home to the third-largest Latino population in the nation, ABTN will see which candidates and issues are gaining traction among Latino Evangelicals and will document the power and influence of super-churches on this voting bloc in Orlando. Asian-American Candidates Compete for the Asian Vote Asian-Americans constitute the majority in more than a half-dozen cities in the greater Los Angeles area, and are becoming a dominant political and cultural force. ABTN will look at a state senate race between two Asian American candidates in Southern California—the only political face-off in the nation where Asian Americans will be running against each other in a nonprimary race—to assess the political behavior of the Asian American and Pacific Islander population and their voting patterns in the future. Visa Dream tells the touching story of one family's experience gaining entry into the United States, shedding light on the hardships many immigrant families endure. The film follows an elderly couple from Jalisco, Mexico, as they long to reunite with their three children in Los Angeles. The U.S. Consulate demystifies the visa process and illuminates the reasons why they approve some applications—and deny others. (Friday, September 23, at 6:00 p.m.) Children of Giant returns to Marfa, Texas, 60 years later to explore the dramatic story behind the making of the film Giant and its enduring legacy. The program combines interviews with the surviving cast and crew with the recollections of residents who participated in the production, many of whose lives mirrored the controversial themes of racism and segregation explored in the film. (Friday, September 30, 6:30 p.m.)

The Salinas Project goes beyond the mainstream media representations to shine a light on the problems in East Salinas and highlight the successes of the often marginalized community in the predominantly Latino neighborhood known as Alisal. In the face of adversity, the young people of Salinas strive to improve their social and economic realities by educating themselves and changing their lives, one generation at a time.
