Dear Friends, I am pleased to report that in the “home stretch” of our Igniting the Spirit of Possibility campaign we have raised nearly $22 million, putting us at approximately 92 percent of our goal. Several additional aspects of the campaign represent achievements I want to share with you. Even with the campaign still underway, we have begun to realize new possibilities as a public media organization. With contributions from many new and longstanding funders, we are already making a difference in important initiatives related to the education and welfare of our children, to the overall health of our community, to our environment, to entrepreneurship, and to the vitality of the arts in our region. The concept is simple: Apply our capabilities and position of trust in collaboration with our community to address important issues as we shine a light on our region’s achievements. It would appear to be an idea whose time had come. But it is actually an idea proposed by our founders that is just now coming to full fruition. Ray Wittcoff, our last living founder, paid us a visit in July. Throughout his life he has been known for innovative thinking, determination and a strong desire to strengthen civic life. He also has been known for his remarkable ability to bring community partners to the table.

We’re all fortunate that Ray Wittcoff brought his talents and skills to the goal of creating what would become the Nine Network of Public Media. And we are fortunate that he has been willing to serve as honorary chair of our Igniting the Spirit of Possibility campaign. Ray Wittcoff epitomizes the spirit of possibility. Some say we’re no longer a traditional public television station. And they’re right. But they’re only half right. We are moving forward, while remaining true to our founding principles of service to this community. And, as Ray Wittcoff would say, we have the idea that we can always do better. Our very purpose is to serve the people of the St. Louis region. And the purpose of our Igniting the Spirit of Possibility campaign is to increase our capacity to do just that. Please make an additional contribution that will help us build our capacity for the future. Yours truly,

Jack Galmiche President and CEO Nine Network of Public Media

We think of Ray Wittcoff when community partners come to our table to work on positive outcomes for our community.

Open to the Public: The public is invited to meetings of the Nine Network board of directors. For information about Nine’s public meetings, call Cathy Peterson at (314) 512-9017.

American Graduate Community Town Hall Working Together for Actionable Solutions

For more than two years, the Nine Network of Public Media has been leading a local and national initiative to help young people achieve high school graduation and future success. The American Graduate initiative has involved 75 public media organizations and more than 800 community partner organizations nationwide — more than 50 in St. Louis alone. On Monday, September 16 at 7:00 p.m., the Nine Network will kick off a national series of town halls informed by community conversations being held across the country. The American Graduate Community Town Hall at Nine will be moderated by PBS NewsHour senior correspondent Ray Suarez. The hour-long live broadcast will bring together a broad spectrum of the community to discuss challenges students face and how we can work together to drive actionable solutions. Participants will include parents, students, business leaders, educators and community leaders. Registration to be part of the studio audience is at nineNet.org/TownHall. Viewers will be encouraged to join the conversation via Twitter at #AmGradSTL. The town hall can also be viewed online at nineNet.org and will be rebroadcast on Nine World on September 18 at 8:00 p.m., September 21 at 7:00 p.m. and September 22 at 10:00 a.m. On Saturday, September 28, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., the Nine Network will present American Graduate Day, a seven-hour national broadcast to engage the entire country around improving graduation rates. The broadcast will include nineNet.org

celebrity guests, compelling stories from students, information about volunteer opportunities and town hall segments. On October 28 and November 4 at 10:00 p.m. on Nine PBS, a two-hour Independent Lens documentary, The Graduates, explores the roots of the Latino dropout crisis and the ongoing effort to increase graduation rates. Also, the United Way, the University of Missouri-St. Louis, Wyman Center and Washington University will be presenting a series of related events in September and October. A full schedule will be available at nineNet.org/AmericanGraduate. American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen is a nationwide public media initiative led by the Nine Network and funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

(L–R) Anne Reid, Derek Jacobi, Nicola Walker and Sarah Lancashire star in Last Tango in Halifax.

The Age of Love Young love has no age limit in the new comedy drama Last Tango in Halifax. ally Wainwright’s mother inspired her, and as a result, Wainwright now has a hit TV series. In real life, Wainwright’s widowed, 75-year-old mom, Dorothy, reunited with her childhood beau, Alec, after he found her on the Internet. Their romance and subsequent marriage enchanted Wainwright, who saw in their harmonious and serendipitous relationship the basis for a television series. Last Tango in Halifax, writer Wainwright’s six-part series that followed, stars legendary actor Derek Jacobi (I Claudius, The King’s Speech, The Borgias, My Week With Marilyn) and Anne Reid (Upstairs Downstairs) as childhood sweethearts Alan Buttershaw and Celia Dawson, both widowed and in their 70s. It debuted in 2012 in Great Britain and comes to Nine PBS on September 8. The series is an uplifting comedy drama about romance and second chances. Full of zesty humor, great characters and glorious dialogue, it’s about timeless love in a very modern setting. 6

September–October 2013 | nineMagazine

Characters Alan and Celia fall for each other all over again when they are reunited on Facebook after nearly 60 years. As their lives collide for a second time, the couple lament over what might have been as they begin a life-affirming journey of what can still happen. Their relationship is a celebratory tale of the power of love at any age. At this point series creator Wainwright found it necessary to diverge from her family’s story and add a dose of dramatic conflict to the tale. The plot focuses on family, so Wainwright gave the family some baggage. Alan and Celia both have grown daughters, whose dysfunctional lives bring drama at every turn. Celia’s daughter Caroline (Sarah Lancashire), a career-focused head teacher, is worried that her mom is rushing into things with Alan. But with her adulterous husband, John (Tony Gardner), back on the scene having left his alcoholic mistress Judith, and with relationship issues of her own, she’s happy to let things run their course. nineNet.org

Tune In: Chaotic, independent Gillian (Nicola Walker) works hard on the family farm as well as in the local supermarket. Impetuous in her relationships, she’s currently dealing with the advances of her younger lover Paul and the accusations of her brother-in-law Robbie (Dean Andrews), who’s convinced she was involved in the death of her husband. Neither daughter would ever dream of getting in the way of their parents’ happiness. But somehow they just can’t help themselves. “Last Tango could have patronized its aged protagonists or targeted only an ageing audience. But it triumphed because it wasn’t about old people or even elderly romance, but love. This (sentimental) 30-year-old loved every minute,” writes reviewer Simon Usborne in The Independent. The premiere of Last Tango in Halifax ranked within BBC One’s top 10 highest-rated drama series in 2012. Actress Reid says in an interview in RadioTimes, “I knew it was nineNet.org

Last Tango in Halifax airs Sundays at 7:00 p.m. beginning September 8. It is rebroadcast Tuesdays at 1:00 a.m. beginning September 10 and Thursdays at 10:00 p.m. beginning September 12. Full episodes will be available for viewing for a limited time after each broadcast on nineNet.org.

good but I didn’t know that it was going to be so phenomenally successful.” She adds, "And it has been. I have never been in anything in my life that appeals to everybody. It appeals to old people, young people, all classes, everybody. People come up to me now with a big smile, and I know what they’re going to say. It’s like having friends all over the place! It’s lovely.” Executive producer Nicole Shindler says, “‘What if’ is a question that haunts all of us, but in the hands of Derek Jacobi and Anne Reid, and the larger cast of Last Tango in Halifax, it becomes a hugely thoughtful and funny look at love and loss and hope. Making the series was a complete joy for all of us involved.”

PBS NewsHour Weekend will present the same trustworthy information, but with a unique approach. “We have an opportunity to experiment a bit more on the weekend program as we bring the NewsHour to the next step of its evolution,” Sreenivasan says. The weekend edition asks the audience to provide input on upcoming episodes.

PBS Arts Fall Festival Returns

Patti Austin with Take 6, Met Opera star Elina Garanca and Michael Bublé are among the guest stars.

PBS and the Nine Network present arts programming year-round, but the annual PBS Arts Fall Festival still manages to ratchet up the level of excitement with its annual concentration of new and deliberately spectacular arts specials.

On Sunday, October 27 at 2:00 p.m., the PBS Arts Fall Festival continues with the premiere of A Raisin in the Sun Revisited: The Raisin Cycle at Center Stage. This film features scenes from Baltimore’s Center Stage performance of Pulitzer Prize-winning Clybourne Park and Beneatha’s Place, two plays inspired by Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun, and clips from film and television productions of A Raisin in the Sun. In addition, it examines the Raisin in the Sun backstory, and the tangled emotions that still muddy our thinking about property, race, gentrification and neighborhood.

This year, the seven-week PBS Arts Fall Festival’s offerings celebrate music and Broadway classics, including Nashville 2.0, a tribute to legendary country stars; a star-studded version of Stephen Sondheim’s musical Company; and Barbra Streisand: Back to Brooklyn, the superstar’s first Brooklyn concert since her childhood years. The weekly specials kick off on Friday, October 18 at 9:00 p.m. (repeats Sunday, October 20 at 2:00 p.m.) with Great Performances’ 40th Anniversary Celebration. The all-star homecoming at Lincoln Center features alumni sharing their personal stories of what Great Performances means to them as America’s only ongoing primetime stage for the performing arts. PBS NewsHour Adds Weekend Coverage Hari Sreenivasan, correspondent and director of digital partnerships for PBS NewsHour, is ready to add more to his already impressive list of responsibilities. Beginning September 7, Sreenivasan will extend the impact of PBS NewsHour to Saturday and Sunday when he debuts as anchor of PBS NewsHour Weekend, a new program summarizing and

Jessica Frances Dukes (L) and Kim Bey in a scene from Beneatha’s Place, part of the PBS Arts Fall Festival.

“I’m hoping to pull the audience into the ways we create content, and help us spread the word about it as well,” Sreenivasan says. “I hope to have ‘anchor’ hour, a bit like office hours that your professors kept in college. I’ll be open to viewers across different social media platforms and having a conversation about aspects of the stories we are planning in the coming weekend and then taking some of these questions into our editorial meeting.”

Hari Sreenivasan anchors the new weekend edition of PBS NewsHour.

PBS NewsHour Weekend differs from its parent show in more ways than one. “It’s a half-hour versus a whole one,” Sreenivasan says. “We have a new set, a new city and new opportunities for viewers to engage while still keeping the depth and context that viewers have come to love and trust.” Located in New York, this new extension also allows PBS NewsHour to become more accessible. “We’re committed to being available anywhere, anytime,” Sreenivasan nineNet.org

says. “That means online and on air, weekdays and weekends.” Sreenivasan has a long history with the television industry, having worked previously for CBS News. Yet, PBS NewsHour and the new PBS NewsHour Weekend possess a quality that other opportunities did not. “We’re the only place on television where informed individuals can disagree agreeably about matters that matter, night after night,” says Sreenivasan. —Katie Greathouse

Gary Bredow profiles entrepreneurs in Start Up.

Starting New Businesses In a recent poll, nearly 50 percent of Americans said they dreamed of starting their own business. Just what does it take to realize that dream? Start Up, a fast-paced, new, 13-part series, answers the call. It airs Saturdays at 4:00 p.m. beginning September 7 on Nine PBS. Host Gary Bredow travels nationwide interviewing over 40 successful, fascinating entrepreneurs from Milwaukee “Gouda Girls” food truck owners to a Chicago clothing company for kids. The series offers an up-close and personal look into the world of the modern American entrepreneur. As complicated as starting a business may seem, the goal is to demystify the process by sharing the real life experiences of average Americans who are taking control of their own destiny while creating jobs for others. The Start Up series complements the Nine Network’s ongoing Ignite Innovation initiative, which was launched to boost awareness of resources for the region’s entrepreneurs. In April, Nine broadcast a live Ignite Innovation town hall, and every Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. Nine hosts 1 Million Cups of Coffee, a free weekly meeting that gives entrepreneurs the opportunity to present ideas and network with nineNet.org

other innovators. (The presentations are streamed on nineNet.org/1mc.) Nine also partners with the St. Louis County Economic Council on the St. Louis Startup Challenge to encourage new entrepreneurs.

American Experience at 25 In 1988, the documentary The Great San Francisco Earthquake shook up the PBS schedule as the first offering from the new history series American Experience. Over 25 years, American Experience has been television’s most-watched history series, bringing to life the incredible characters and epic stories that shape America’s past and present. Since its debut, the series has: produced 287 films; won over 290 awards, including 30 Emmys and 16 George Foster Peabody Awards; and been called “the most consistently enriching program on television” (Chicago Tribune).

From Police Force to Volunteer Force Judy Woolsey is deeply invested in her relationship with the Nine Network. Along with watching Nine for as long as she can remember and being an active member for five years, she is also a dedicated volunteer. Woolsey, of Maryland Heights, had always wanted to volunteer at Nine and after researching the volunteer program on Nine’s website, she immediately took the steps to join. Drawn to the countless opportunities available through the volunteer program, she began last February. “Volunteers are provided with training and support to ensure the best possible service to Nine Network members and viewers,” she says. “I am so thankful for the opportunity to give back not only as a member, but as a customer service volunteer NineNetwork PfautchAd-2013.pdf in Member Services.”

Outside of volunteering, Woolsey has a private pilot’s license and enjoys traveling, gardening and reading. Professionally, she has spent most of her life communicating with the public. She spent 34 years as a police officer in Bridgeton. For 21 of those years Woolsey was a D.A.R.E. officer, educating elementary schoolchildren about resisting peer pressure and raising awareness about substance abuse. She also served as the community relations officer. Both positions taught Woolsey how to deal with inquiries from the public—perfect experience when she takes calls from viewers in her position at Nine. “I use the skills I developed all those years as a way to give back to the Nine Network,” she says. “I love my volunteer position; it’s a fun challenge to find the answers to people’s problems.”

As a D.A.R.E. officer and seeing firsthand how education positively influences the behavior of children, educational programming is extremely 7/29/13 4:36 PM important to Woolsey.

Volunteer Judy Woolsey answers viewers phone calls and more.

“The quality of programming provided by the Nine Network is an educational and entertainment oasis in today’s complicated world of media. The values and integrity of Nine’s programming content are very important to me, and I am very proud to be serving in the role of volunteer.” In fact, Woolsey encouraged her own children to watch Nine. “When my Continued on page 14

This fall, the Nine Network’s Nine Academy will help Pierre Laclede Honors College students at the University of Missouri-St. Louis take historic preservation to a new level. In a project in partnership with UMSL, Nine and the Landmarks Association of St. Louis, the students will explore the two fundamental elements that make a neighborhood: buildings and people. The students will take a semester-long course in which they will document the character of various St. Louis neighborhoods by collecting oral histories of residents most familiar with every home, business, structure and street where they live. Then, under the guidance of Nine Academy nineNet.org

instructor Mike Pagano, the students will create their own three-minute historical documentary. “We will provide cameras, equipment and training in how to set up shots and edit,” says Pagano. “The videos will be screened in December at the Missouri History Museum and later used as reference tools by the Landmarks Association.”

COCA Kids Camp For a week last July, the Nine Network’s Nine Academy welcomed nine summer campers from COCA (Center of Creative Arts) for what instructor Mike Pagano calls a “fast-paced crash course in television production.” The middle-school students collaborated to produce a 25-minute newsmagazine they titled The Coming Generation: Youth and the Changing World. They developed a concept and theme, then went out with cameras to record introductions, shoot footage and interview siblings, parents and

nearby Nine Network interns for stories. Segments looked at topics such as how Barbie dolls influence body image and whether New York City’s anti-Big Gulp law is reasonable. In post-camp surveys, the students gave the class rave reviews and reflected on how much they learned. “I think the most challenging part was when we had to make our interview questions,” writes Amelia Brown. “Thinking about a topic is one thing, but trying to make questions about a topic is another thing.” Their film debuted at a private screening for family and friends. nineNet.org

Nine to Grow On

Real Food and Family Drama Chef Vivian Howard and her husband, Ben Knight, worked for some of the best chefs in New York City. She made a name for herself in the Manhattan restaurant world and with her own gourmet soup delivery service. Acclaim and potential investors poured in, but it was the offer from her own parents that called to her the loudest. They would help her build a restaurant—but with one catch. She had to open it back home in Eastern North Carolina, a place to which she swore she would never return.

A unique new series tells what happened next. A Chef’s Life, broadcast Sundays at 6:30 p.m. beginning September 15, is a half-hour, characterdriven documentary and cooking series that takes viewers inside the life of Howard and Knight after they left the big city to open a fine dining restaurant in rural North Carolina. It was, says Howard, “totally out of place in our small town.” And so the Chef & the Farmer, located in Kinston, in Lenoir County, North Carolina, was born. Six years in, Howard and her restaurant have won numerous accolades, including her selection as a James Beard semifinalist, but the challenges continue. As the series

opens, Howard and Knight are juggling the restaurant, raising twins and anxiously building their own home— right next door to her parents. In that relationship, as well as in the food she prepares, Howard’s found a recipe for success. “Aside from discovering that I actually like spending time with my family,” she says, “I’ve also learned that the food I grew up with has a story.” Cynthia Hill, the filmmaker behind A Chef’s Life, grew up with Howard and persuaded her to allow a camera crew to chronicle her move back home. Each episode follows Howard out of the kitchen and into cornfields, strawberry patches and hog farms as she hunts down the ingredients that inspire her seasonal menus. A celebration of true farm to table food, the 13-week series combines the action and drama of a high-pressure business with the joys and stresses of family life. Find a sneak peek of A Chef’s Life online at ninenet.org/achefslife.

Shot over three years, it follows three irrepressible graduate students as they pursue a Ph.D. and race to publish their scientific findings. Their challenge: to decipher the structure and mechanism of a tiny protein that controls the burning and storage of fat.
