Dear Friends, Now in our 63rd year of serving the St. Louis region, we continue to support and strengthen our community with stimulating programs and partnerships that foster learning, dialogue, innovation and understanding. We are always inspired by those who make a positive difference in the civic life of our region and beyond. And it is with great sadness that we mourn the loss in November of four such friends and colleagues, Gwen Ifill, Nine Network board member Gene Mackey, Ted Harrison, husband of Nine Network board member Juanita Hinshaw, and Nancy Hardgrove, wife of Michael Hardgrove, who retired in 2002 after nearly 24 years as Nine's general manager. We particularly appreciate their significant contributions. The year is off to a rousing start with a wealth of exciting programs and services beginning in January. I hope you enjoy the extraordinary quality and depth in Masterpiece’s new Sunday night period drama, Victoria, the next season of Sherlock, and Season 2 of Mercy Street. And we are very pleased to launch our new Nine PBS KIDS® 24/7 channel and live stream on January 16. These innovative services will offer families the best interactive media experiences, increasing “anytime” access to the most trusted, educational content available, especially for those who need it most. Read the full story on page 6. I hope you’re as proud as we are to be carrying the torch of independent, non-commercial public television in our region. We are also proud of our local productions. New documentaries on the Central West End and the Cortex Innovation Community are in production, and a full-hour Donnybrook 30th anniversary special airs January 5. Then on January 9, we will broadcast a special program highlighting our 2016 Pioneer Spirit Award Celebration this past fall, recognizing some of those who support the Nine Network and partner with us in shaping a vibrant future. Telling the stories of our region is an honor. It would not be possible without you. We appreciate your continued support as we start the New Year and continue to help strengthen our community. I am happy to report that we have raised nearly $35 million toward the $50 million goal of our Igniting the Spirit of Possibility capacity-building campaign. It is the first such campaign in our history; and its success will make it possible for us to serve our region well into the future. I hope you will consider making a contribution to the campaign as a champion of civic dialogue and smart television. Warm wishes for a bright and prosperous New Year. Yours truly,
Jack Galmiche President and CEO Open to the Public: The public is invited to meetings of the Nine Network board of directors. For information about Nine’s public meetings, call Cathy Peterson at (314) 512-9017.

New drama series about the epic life of Queen Victoria airs Sunday nights. nother great Masterpiece drama series is set to debut on Sundays nights on Nine PBS. In Victoria, writer Daisy Goodwin imaginatively depicts what it was like for an ill-educated, emotionally deprived teenager to wake up one morning and find that she is the most powerful woman in the world. Jenna Coleman (Doctor Who) stars as the young Queen Victoria at the outset of her epic reign, which set the stage for an entire era that would be named in her honor (the Victorian era). Victoria airs in seven magnificent parts, beginning Sunday, January 15, at 8:00 p.m. with a two-hour premiere on Nine PBS. Following Victoria from her accession to the throne at age 18, through her education in politics, courtship and marriage, Victoria paints a portrait of a monarch who was raised to be the pawn of her powerful elders, but who wasted no time in showing the empire who was in charge.
Ruler rises to the challenge
That it happened at all was practically a miracle. Victoria was queen only by virtue of ill luck and unfruitful marriages on the part of her uncles, who failed to produce legitimate heirs to the crown. Furthermore, her immediate predecessors were so disliked as kings that the institution of the monarchy seemed to be doomed. Victoria charts how the new ruler rose to the challenge and weathered a series of crises—some of her own making—without ever losing her youthful charm and innate sense of justice, which made her popular with her subjects.

Goodwin has been careful to stay faithful to the facts, while reading between the lines to fill in the gaps where the early Victorians were scrupulously silent. The result is a gripping historical pageant that reveals a side of Victoria that is at odds with her later reputation for prudery and a high moral tone. In other words, Victoria was not a Victorian as we use the term. “She was very, very keen on sex,” says Goodwin, adding that she had nine children. There were so many Victorias named in tribute to the queen, during and after her reign, that it comes as a surprise to learn that when she was christened Alexandrina Victoria at her birth, both names were practically made up. Previous British queens were Jane, Mary, Elizabeth, or Anne. The regal name by which a king or queen is to be officially known is up to the sovereign. In choosing to be called Queen Victoria, could she have been signaling that she would be a queen like no other? Queen Victoria was the longest reigning monarch in English history, having kept the throne for 63 years and 7 months—before Queen Elizabeth II beat her record in 2015. For decades, Victoria was also the oldest monarch to ever rule Great Britain, as she died still wearing the crown at age 81.
Stellar cast
The cast includes Rufus Sewell (The Man in the High Castle) as Lord Melbourne, the British prime minister who was Victoria’s father figure and intimate friend; Tom Hughes (Dancing on the Edge) as the handsome, brilliant and awkward Prince Albert, who stole Victoria’s heart after a rocky start; and Alex Jennings (Churchill’s Secret) as Leopold I, King of Belgium, Victoria and Albert’s matchmaking uncle who had dreams of a dynasty for his obscure royal line—which he amazingly achieved. Paul Rhys plays Sir

John Conroy, the rumored lover of Victoria’s mother, the Duchess of Kent, a German princess played by German actress Catherine H. Flemming. Conroy pictures himself as the de facto ruler of the realm—if only he can get the duchess appointed regent for the immature queen. And Peter Firth appears as Victoria’s conniving uncle, the Duke of Cumberland, who is convinced that he rightfully belongs on the throne and diligently conspires to get there.

This will give parents access to the highest quality educational content wherever they are and whenever they want, including primetime and after-school hours when viewing among families is high. The importance of early childhood education cannot be overstated; it’s a critical theme of our work at the Nine Network. The new launch provides quality children’s programming that is grounded in evidencebased learning principles. We work closely with the St. Louis Early Childhood Commission and we connect our region’s early childhood education leaders to help achieve early education priorities. Our partnership with the St. Louis Public Library to present the popular Story Time in the Commons is just one example of our commitment to early childhood education. Research confirms that PBS KIDS media content helps children build critical skills that enable them to find success in school and life, while also helping parents increase their own engagement. A recent study conducted by WestEd found that PBS KIDS resources can help narrow the math achievement gap for children from low-income families and better prepare them for kindergarten.

“Nine is one of the innovators and facilitators of educational innovation. What public media is doing is significantly different than any other media source that we’ve been involved in,” says Steve Zwolak, CEO of LUME Institute, executive director of University City Children’s Center, and an American Graduate champion. “Parents know that PBS KIDS makes a difference in their children’s lives, which is why so many have said they would value having access to our content throughout the day. Television continues to be the most widely used platform for children’s educational content, especially among low-income families,” said PBS President and CEO Paula Kerger. “The new PBS KIDS 24/7 channel and live stream offered by the Nine Network ensure that educational media is available to all families, all nineNet.org

IN MEMORIAM In November 2016, we lost two dear friends of the Nine Network. They will be forever in our hearts.
GWEN IFILL
E U G E N E M A C K E Y, I I I
On November 14, our beloved colleague Gwen Ifill passed away. Gwen was highly regarded by all who knew her and will always hold a special place in the hearts of St. Louisans. She graciously visited with our supporters on many occasions and frequently collaborated with us on important initiatives at the Nine Network. She brought Washington Week to St. Louis twice and was a special guest over the years at numerous events. She hosted a national town hall meeting in St. Louis on President Obama’s first 100 days in office, she helped us launch American Graduate with a national Teacher Town Hall, and she hosted America after Ferguson, a national town hall that provided a forum for a community conversation important to our region. Gwen was one of the nation’s brightest lights in journalism and one of our most trusted sources for news. She commented that her role in public media was to bring “more light, less heat” to the issues that mattered most to communities and our country.
Eugene Mackey, III, passed away November 27. Gene joined the Nine Network’s board of directors in 2007. He will be remembered for his many contributions, including the advice and counsel he so graciously provided. He was an active member of the Development Committee, working with our senior staff and advocating for the Nine Network out in the community. The founder of Mackey Mitchell Architects, he made significant contributions to the field of architecture and to the built environment of the city of St. Louis.
Gwen covered eight presidential campaigns, moderated two vice-presidential debates and served for 17 years on the NewsHour and as moderator and managing editor of Washington Week. In her early career, she covered politics and city hall for some of the country’s most prominent newspapers, carving a path as one of the most accomplished journalists in U.S. media. She won countless awards, including the George Foster Peabody Award and the National Press Club’s Fourth Estate Award. She was also the best-selling author of “The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama.” 8
January–February 2017 | nineMagazine
Gene was named a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 1991 for his design achievements. In 2008, he received the AIA St. Louis Chapter Gold Honor Award. Gene served on numerous professional committees, including terms as director of AIA St. Louis. He was twice president of the St. Louis Chapter. An active member of several community boards, Gene lent his expertise to a large number of local cultural institutions throughout his lifetime. He received a 2001 Reinvent St. Louis award from the St. Louis Business Journal recognizing his commitment to the St. Louis community. He was a member of the Des Lee Collaboration Vision’s Advisory Committee; the St. Louis Regional Business Council; the St. Louis Advisory Board of the Trust for Public Land; the Faust Park Advisory Committee; and Tower Grove Park’s Board of Commissioners.

An hour-long, live special of Donnybrook airs Thursday, January 5, to celebrate and commemorate 30 years on the Nine Network. The program goes behind the scenes of this St. Louis institution, flashbacks to the past, interviews current panelists, and takes calls and tweets from viewers. Billed as “polite conversation on local issues,” Donnybrook is a shining example of how you can differ, respectfully, and still walk away friends at the end of the evening, says the show’s director Anne-Marie Berger. In these divisive times, this always informative and entertaining program that doesn’t take itself too seriously is needed now more than ever.

Taking the Symphony Beyond Powell Hall
Nine Recognized for Public Engagement Efforts Jack Galmiche made St. Louis Magazine’s November 2016 Power List in the “Watchdogs” category. Reflecting on his inclusion to the list, the magazine reported that, “Galmiche has helmed our free public station for a decade. During that time, he’s overseen the [creation of] the Public Media Commons at Grand Center, where the station is working hard to engage the community in a thoughtful dialogue. The station’s also thrown its weight behind such lifechanging initiatives as the American Graduate program, which aims to help high school students earn diplomas.” Galmiche credits staff and community support for the honor. The Public Media Commons received the 2016 Outstanding Local Government Achievement Award for Leadership in Planning and Design Innovation from the East-West Gateway Council of Governments. The council provides a forum for local governments of the bi-state St. Louis area to work together to solve problems that cross jurisdictional boundaries. The award recognizes the efforts of the Nine Network, St. Louis Public Radio and the University of Missouri St. Louis to bring people together by creating a space that stimulates creative thinking and serves as an incubator of arts and ideas. The Council said the Commons underscored the importance of using an innovative, interactive approach when designing public spaces. nineNet.org

I’m on every committee in town,” Mike McGrath enthusiastically professes. He is attuned to the value volunteers bring to nonprofit organizations, saying it helps them serve their purpose more efficiently. He started volunteering at Nine after calling to inquire about making Nine part of his estate planning. McGrath is a generous Torch Lighter and Legacy 9 member, and serves on the Legacy 9 Committee. Since 2014, he has volunteered at Storytime in the Commons, performed in costume as Clifford the Big Red Dog, membership phone drives, the front desk, and Feast TV Taste & See. He most enjoys getting to know the other volunteers. A resident of Ferguson, McGrath just passed his 10-year Nine member anniversary! —Mike McGrath Volunteer since 2014

In The Hand That Feeds, shy sandwich-maker Mahoma Lopez unites his undocumented immigrant coworkers to fight abusive conditions at a popular bakery café on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Filmed at the onset of America’s new service economy wage wars, the epic power struggle that ensues turns a single city block into a battlefield in America's new wage wars. The film offers a candid behind-the-scenes look at the plight of undocumented immigrant workers who face sub-legal wages, dangerous machinery, and abusive managers. (Tuesday, January 3, at 7:00 p.m.) l Lears
With the usual economic solutions not working, some citizens and public officials are ready to think outside of the box to reinvent a failing economy in order to restore long-term community stability and a more egalitarian way of life. Shift Change tells the little known stories of employee-owned businesses that compete successfully in today’s economy while providing secure, dignified jobs. The film encourages support for employee ownership, and provides on-the-ground experience from a variety of enterprises and locations. (Sunday, January 29, at 6:00 p.m.)

The Talk—Race in America In the wake of recent tragic and fatal events between people of color and law enforcement, a nationwide conversation is taking place between parents of color and their children, especially sons, about how they need to present themselves if they are stopped by the police. This story reflects not only the deeply troubled community relationships at a grass roots level, but the ever-widening gap between majority-minority populations in the United States. The Talk—Race in America will explore solutions and examine how communities are working together to change the conversation.
