Dear Friends, As we begin the New Year, I want to thank you, our supporters, for helping us serve the St. Louis region with compelling content and important community initiatives in education, health, the environment, the economy, science and the arts. Looking back on our achievements in 2014, I am struck by the fact that we have been able to combine the power of our local productions, national programming and community partner initiatives to make us the most-watched public television station in America as well as a national leader in community engagement. We appreciate being recognized for our work— and we did receive several honors last year, including Emmys and National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA) awards as well as the St. Louis Magazine A-List Award for best news program. But every award was the result of effectively engaging the community with locally produced content that helped raise awareness and understanding on important issues. As you know, most people know us by what they see on television. And we’re very proud of the programming we bring you on all four of our channels. Whether our on-air content is locally produced or available to us from PBS, American Public Television, NETA or another source, we insist on quality across the board. But one of our most valuable services since we were founded in 1954 has been to provide a forum for civil dialogue on important issues. This last year, on Stay Tuned, Donnybrook and in special broadcasts like America After Ferguson, we believe we helped facilitate important community conversations and give you the opportunity to join those discussions.
In 2014, we also opened the Public Media Commons, a forum for creative experiences and a truly unique platform for creative expression. The “Commons” has already exceeded our most optimistic expectations for the space and the kinds of creative collaborations it can generate in our community. So far, we’ve experienced everything from innovative musical performances to a showcase of digital art created specifically for the space by outstanding local artists. Now we begin 2015! And we kick off the year with the joyful experience of a new season of Downton Abbey, beginning January 4. Then on January 5 we begin our own new series, Night at the Symphony with Patrick Murphy and the Symphony’s VP for External Affairs Adam Crane. Our collaboration with the St. Louis Symphony continues to be remarkable. And on January 7, we begin another new series, Science Matters, hosted by Jim Kirchherr. I think we are off to a great start. asterpiece Classic: Downton Abbey returns for an epic fifth season of intimately interlaced stories centered on an English country estate—a deliciously entertaining formula that has made it the highest-rated drama in PBS history. Executive producer Gareth Neame says, “Our cast and crew have been immersed in the world of Downton for the last five years and it is a thrill to have seen it grow in popularity in the United States to become one of the most watched shows on television. Viewership and social media stats have soared since Downton Abbey launched in January 2011. Season four drew an average audience of 13.2 million viewers, making it the top PBS drama of all time and one of the highest-rated dramas now on American television.
That is where season five kicks off. It’s 1924. The United Kingdom has its first Labor Party prime minister. The radio is the latest miracle of the age. Music to Your Eyes The Nine Network and the St. Louis Symphony have a long history of collaboration. One of the first joint projects was an all-Beethoven and Brahms concert shot in 1979 in Nine’s old studio. It wasn’t soundproof, so airplane flight patterns had to be checked with the FAA and garbage truck routes coordinated with the county to ensure untimely rumblings wouldn’t intrude while the program was being recorded. Over the years viewers enjoyed more collaborations between Nine and the Symphony in productions shot at Powell Hall such as Messiah, Hans Vonk’s inaugural concert and Living St. Louis specials featuring Carmina Burana, the IN UNISON Chorus, Circus Flora, and more. This month, Nine and the Symphony take the partnership one step further with the debut of Night at the Symphony, a new, monthly series of St. Louis Symphony performances. It airs on the first Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. beginning January 5 (rebroadcast January 11 at 3:00 p.m.). 6
Nine episodes will air in 2015. The hour-long programs will highlight specially selected St. Louis Symphony performances from the 2014–2015 season, as well as encore presentations of concert specials produced since 2012. (The series will not air in March, June and December.)

Last summer, the PBS series Genealogy Roadshow chose three cities as filming locations for its second season, and St. Louis was one of them. In August the crew arrived and spent nearly a week here recording enough footage for two episodes that will air January 20 and February 10. The six-part Genealogy Roadshow series, including episodes shot in Philadelphia and New Orleans as well, airs Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. beginning January 13. (It repeats Thursdays at 1:00 a.m. beginning January 15.) Genealogy Roadshow Executive Producer Carlos Ortiz reports that over 7,000 people applied to be on the show. For the St. Louis episodes, producers chose 12 people for main stories and nineNet.org
12 with smaller stories. “What we loved about our visit to St. Louis was the diversity of stories,” he says. “We were pleased to research and then share stories of all backgrounds and interesting, intriguing pasts. There were LOTS of great stories!” The reactions from participants after hearing star genealogists Kenyatta D. Berry, Joshua Taylor or Mary Tedesco reveal the truth behind family folklore were “emotional, happy for some, and certainly life changing for others,” Ortiz says. One of those who shared those reactions after successfully going through the months-long application and vetting process to be on the show was St. Lou Fringe actor and director Em Piro. When she was approached by a Genealogy Roadshow advance team in Grand Center’s Strauss Park, Piro told them about her family legend, that her great-grandmother was a mail-order bride who came to America
from Italy to marry a Wyoming cowboy, but upon meeting him, ran off with another Italian. Piro says she had “a blast” when the Genealogy Roadshow crew arrived to begin taping background footage with participants. Her excitement on camera was palpable later that week when she sat down with Tedesco in the grand hall of St. Louis Public Library-Central Branch to hear what researchers discovered. “The whole thing opened up a whole Pandora’s box in my family!” Piro says now, several months later. “I definitely feel closer to them... . It was a unifying adventure, even though they weren’t here for it.”

Genealogy Roadshow has increased her interest in family history and changed how she feels about her ancestors. “There were some very surprising things unearthed in my ‘reveal,’” Piro explains. “Even though the research didn’t reveal what I thought it would, I somehow feel closer to my identity now. I feel part of a bigger picture, the international history of human migration. I have names and stories to put with a lineage that previously ended on a boat to Ellis Island. I’m grateful for the experience.”

Nine Wins NETA Awards In October, the Nine Network won recognition from the National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA) at the organization’s national meeting in Dallas. Stay Tuned was honored for community engagement innovation, and Health, Money and Politics: Missouri’s Medicaid Debate was saluted in the news and public affairs category. NETA is a professional association serving 95 public television licensees and affiliated educational organizations. The NETA Awards recognize member-created excellence in public broadcasting.
The Cat in the Hat returns to the Magic House for the Nine Network’s annual party that celebrates both the birthday of author Dr. Seuss and reading. The two-day bash, on Saturday, February 28 from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday, March 1 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., features local performers reading from Dr. Seuss books, crafts, games and a photo op with Dr. Seuss characters. The Magic House is located at 516 S. Kirkwood Rd. Admission is $9.50, but children can get in free to the Birthday Bash if they bring a new Seuss book ($5 minimum value) to donate to children in need. For more information, visit nineNet.org. Galmiche Elected to National Position Nine Network President and CEO Jack Galmiche was elected to serve as professional vice-chair of the national PBS board of directors in November. As professional vice-chair, Galmiche will hold the most prominent PBS board position of any public television station general manager, president or CEO in the country. Says Galmiche, “I am honored to have been elected to serve as professional vice-chair of the PBS board directors. Our close association with PBS helps us better serve the people of the St. Louis region. And we are proud to say that as the Nine Network celebrates its 60th anniversary, PBS and Sesame Street are celebrating their 45th anniversaries. This has been a long and committed relationship.” 8

Volunteering to Support Nine’s Mission There are many talents Elizabeth Threlkeld uses when she’s volunteering at the Nine Network. With experience in hospitality, event planning and human resources, Threlkeld has volunteered for pledge drives, to assist with mailings and as a greeter at various events. Threlkeld has volunteered for two years because she enjoys working with Nine’s diverse group of fellow volunteers, and she believes in Nine’s mission and vision. Despite being out of school for 25 years, Threlkeld always wanted to continue her education and build on her sociology undergraduate degree. She recently left her position as a food service director and enrolled in Webster University’s Nonprofit Leadership Graduate Program to study all the areas that are necessary to manage an organization like Nine. She enjoys the challenge of taking classes outside her experience, like finance, as well as subjects such as boards, development and marketing. Threlkeld, a fifth generation St. Louisan, lives in Richmond Heights and likes to cook, participate in book clubs, dine at new restaurants and spend time with her two granddaughters. Together they enjoy visiting St. Louis’ museums. Their love of art compelled them to explore St. Louis to find and photograph the cake sculptures celebrating the city’s 250th birthday. 10

Picture Black History With his upcoming Independent Lens film Through a Lens Darkly (airing Sunday, February 22 at 10:30 p.m.), filmmaker Thomas Allen Harris celebrates 170 years of pioneering black photographers and how the images they recorded have helped their communities “construct political, aesthetic and cultural representations of themselves and their world.” Realizing that all African American families have albums of photos and stories of previous generations, Harris created the Digital Diaspora Family Reunion Roadshow, a project that takes him across the country to special roadshow events where people share photos and videos, and talk about their family’s history. Harris and his team
digitally record the stories and images right there, then upload them to create an online visual archive of people of African descent over the last 160 years, showcasing a diversity of experiences not found in existing photo collections.

Harris brought the Digital Diaspora Family Reunion Roadshow to the Nine Network in November in partnership with Cinema St. Louis’ 23rd Annual Whitaker St. Louis International Film Festival and co-sponsored by the St. Louis American and Washington University’s Center for the Humanities. Approximately 60 people attended and, with Harris serving as the facilitator, they shared images of weddings, parties and family gatherings and talked about parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. The roadshow also tied in with Nine’s American Graduate initiative. Says Teresa Martinez, Nine’s director of community facilitation: “We have learned from community partners connected to our Ferguson coverage that there is a need for young people of color and diverse backgrounds to understand their history—a history that is missing from our textbooks and mass media. The event aimed to help our local youth author their own history through family photos, while learning from those who came before them.”

Memories of Nine Fans of Nine Network are helping celebrate the station’s 60th anniversary year by sharing their memories. Thomas Dunn writes that he served on the technical crew for a live broadcast in 1977 from the Admiral riverboat to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Charles Lindbergh’s flight. Rose Volner answered telephones at Nine in the mid-1990s and also remembers being the high bidder during Channel 9’s Auction for tickets to the Casa Loma Ballroom. Linda Brody credits watching Julia Child on Nine for her love of culinary arts; she later moved to California, where she opened restaurants and a coffee roasting company. In the 1950s, Geoffrey Morrison regularly watched a program hosted by Fr. Bannon at St. Louis University about the American West. It fueled his lifelong interest in history. Years later in college, he met Fr. Bannon, the chair of SLU’s history department, who encouraged studies that led Morrison to become a history teacher himself. Joan Carollo recalls that her dad was thrilled when Nine first came on the air. She was 14 at the time and writes, “Now 60 years later it’s the only channel I couldn’t give up. Nine to Grow On No Cars Allowed Depending on your outlook, a world without cars, trains or buses may seem like either a nightmare or paradise. The world still boasts a few islands of civilization that get by just fine without motorized vehicles. In fact, these rare spots are, quite literally, islands. Islands Without Cars is a new, six-part travel series hosted by comedian and actress Kira Hesser that takes a whimsical look at life in these exhaust-free enclaves. Each 30-minute episode explores remote locations that have kept a well-worn foot in the past by restricting or altogether forbidding the use of motorized vehicles. On small, remote and sparsely populated isles scattered throughout Europe, most of the inhabitants travel and transport goods by donkey, bicycle and other quiet conveyances. In Hydra (Greece), Sark (Channel Islands), Inis Meain (Ireland), the Aeolians (Italy), Zlarin and Krapanj (Croatia) and Porquerroles (France), independent traveler Hesser reveals her love of history and offers fun and engaging details about what makes these locations special.
For instance, over a thousand beautiful islands dot Croatia’s incomparable Dalmatian coastline. Tiny Zlarin is known for its beautiful coral, and the even smaller island of Krapanj is celebrated for its history of sponge harvesting. The island of Sark is the last feudal state in the Western world—a tiny, ruggedly beautiful island in the English Channel Host Kira Hesser with only 600 contentedly car-phobic at Dun Chonchui residents. Interviews include Seigneur on Inis Meain in Michael Beaumont, the feudal lord the Aran Islands. who inherited the island from his grandmother—the infamous Dame of Sark—and a conversation with a hotel operator straight out of Fawlty Towers. According to legend, in the 17th century, Oliver Cromwell, the fanatical Protestant “Lord Protector” of England, gave the Irish Catholics a choice: they could go to hell or go to Connacht. Some went further still—all the way to three ruggedly beautiful islands off of Ireland’s west coast: Ireland’s Inis Meain. Islands Without Cars airs Saturdays at 6:30 p.m. beginning January 31.

While prospecting for dinosaur bones, explorer and scientist Paul Sereno stumbled across an ancient human cemetery more than 5,000 years older than the Egyptian pyramids, located in what is now the world’s largest desert. Over 10 years and five expeditions, Sereno has found more than 200 burial plots, each more intriguing than the last: a man buried with his head in a pot; another buried sitting in a turtle shell; a girl with a bracelet carved from hippo bone; and most striking of all, a woman embracing two children, hands entwined in a triple burial.

Professor Muhammad Yunus never wanted to be a banker and he certainly never imagined winning the Nobel Peace Prize. Yet his quest to help the working poor invest in themselves led to both. Known as the father of microcredit, Yunus spent years developing the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh. In 1983 it became a fully licensed bank with a twist—it was owned by its borrowers—mainly poor women, and its mission was to eradicate poverty, not make a profit. This film follows Yunus as he establishes his unique and revolutionary microfinance program in the U.S.
