Filmmaker Ken Burns (L) and Nine Network President and CEO Jack Galmiche in the Nine Network studio.

Dear Friends, When Ken Burns was in St. Louis in May to give the commencement address at Washington University, he stopped by the Nine Network. His visit gave us a special opportunity to sit down with him to discuss his upcoming documentaries and his views on the value of public media. I wish all of you could have been with us. Ken Burns once referred to PBS as a “shared space” and “a place where we can all feel at home.” I hope you agree. Certainly all of us at the Nine Network want you to feel that kind of connection to us and what we do. In May, as we paid tribute to the life and career of Martin Duggan, I also thought about the value we place on character. Martin Duggan and the principles he espoused were a good match for public television. We are honored that he came to us with his idea for a public affairs show anchored in the concept of civil dialogue. That was in 1986; and the show continues to be among the most–watched local series on public television nationwide. Martin said that Donnybrook just might be his legacy, but I believe Martin Duggan’s legacy was the way he lived his life. I hope you have an opportunity this summer to join us in the Public Media Commons. It has become the catalyst for shared creative experiences that are as diverse as they are inventive—everything from spontaneous tango dancing sparked by the extraordinary music of Cortango Orquesta to a celebration of girls in science during our SciGirls community screening. But remember, you can drop by any time just to experience amazing video on the big screens created by local and international video artists. Thank you for your ongoing support. Yours truly,

Jack Galmiche President and CEO Nine Network of Public Media

er! is summ h t e r o nm and eve — s y a lw ea n scienc o s e s u foc etwork N e in N The n 1955, you could increase your scientific acumen by watching Washington University chancellor Arthur Holly Compton on Science and Human Responsibility on Channel 9. In 2015, help expanding scientific smarts comes from Jim Kirchherr on Science Matters on Nine PBS. Over the ensuing 60 years, the people have changed, the programs have changed, and scientific knowledge has REALLY changed. But the one constant is Nine. Nine’s Science Matters took a closer look at how Washington University researchers invented “cancer goggles.”

The Nine Network made a commitment to science long ago, and it remains one of the organization’s six community impact areas. By combining outstanding national science programs with local productions that feature scientific innovations and achievements in our region, Nine works to keep people in the St. Louis area aware of the latest developments in science at home and around the world. Science Matters, Nine’s own science series, features area science stories and shares those stories with major markets across the country. It’s a weekly presence, broadcast Wednesdays at 10:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. In addition, with PBS programming for children and our own local work related to STEM topics, Nine hopes to encourage young people to pursue careers in science.

Nine’s Jim Kirchherr talks to Scott Rocca of Griffin 3D about how the hackerspace Arch Reactor was instrumental in starting his business.

Nine Networking media since 1939. His coworkers at Nine recall how he never forgot a name or tidbits of personal information he gleaned from brief conversations. He was genuinely grateful for kindnesses, no matter how small, from the person who gathered the Donnybrook mailbag letters for him to the technician who fitted Duggan with earphones before each broadcast. He had a knack for making each person he met feel valued for a different reason, always seeing the gem of goodness in an individual. The Public Media Commons honored Martin Duggan for 72 hours straight in May and on his June 3 birthday.

Martin Duggan The Nine Network mourns the passing in May of Donnybrook creator and original provocateur Martin Duggan at age 93. He died peacefully 90 minutes after his 73rd wedding anniversary ended, his beloved wife, Mae, by his side. Duggan was one of the best known and longest serving local Nine Network television personalities. He had been an integral part of Martin and the Nine Network Mae Duggan since 1986, when he first brought the idea for Donnybrook to Channel 9. Duggan remembered laughingly that his sample videotape for the proposed program, recorded in panelist Mark Vittert’s kitchen, failed to impress station executives. Nevertheless, in January 1987, Donnybrook debuted with Duggan, Vittert, Rich Koster, Ray Hartmann and Bill McClellan. Through the years, the mix of regular panelists included Anne Keefe and Nan Wyatt plus, currently, Charlie Brennan, Wendy Wiese and Alvin Reid. Other public television stations tried to copy the Donnybrook format, but failed. The mix of people Duggan personally liked and astutely combined was not easily duplicated. “The show is more 8

July–August 2015 | nineMagazine

personality-driven than issue-driven,” he said in a 2004 interview. Before his 23-year career at Nine, Duggan worked 45 years at the St. Louis Globe-Democrat, rising through the ranks from summer employee during college to editorial page editor, a post he held until the Globe ceased publication in 1984. Although he filled in a few times for new provocateur Brennan, Duggan’s last official appearance on Donnybrook was at a live, celebratory goodbye broadcast before hundreds of fans at The Sheldon on December 17, 2009. Since then, Duggan remained immersed in news, family activities and friends. He routinely saw his Donnybrook pals and many other friends for breakfasts, lunches and dinners. He was inducted into the Mid-America Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ Silver Circle in 2010 and the Missouri Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2012. His death left those who knew him at a loss for words to adequately describe someone who had been at the heart of St. Louis

Duggan seemingly knew hundreds of people, and was recognized by hundreds more. It was not unusual, when out with him at a restaurant to be asked by a stranger, “Is that Martin Duggan?” When approached directly, Duggan was unfailingly polite. He was a proper gentleman— ethical, loyal, honest, dignified and diplomatic—with a sharp sense of humor perfectly tailored for his audience. As much as he enjoyed the company of friends, he made clear that his favorite was his one true love, his “lil’ darlin’” wife, Mae, age 96. She survives him, along with four of their five children, 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The special, hour-long Donnybrook episode that aired May 28, the day after Duggan’s passing, will be rebroadcast this month on July 2 at 7:00 p.m., July 4 at 1:00 a.m. and July 5 at 11:00 a.m. In it, Brennan and company share remembrances, Duggan is seen in behind-the-scenes clips and in past shows, and the Donnybrookers take calls from viewers as well as from former panelist Mark Vittert.

The Missouri National Education Association (MNEA) celebrated Nine Network President and CEO Jack Galmiche’s dedication to community education on April 18 by presenting him with the Horace Mann Friend of Education Award in television journalism. The annual award honors Missourians who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to public education. The award reflects Galmiche and Nine’s work with the national and local American Graduate initiative, Arts America, Science Matters, Stay Tuned, Dr. Seuss Birthday Bash/Read Across America, the Nine Academy, and PBS educational content. The MNEA cited Nine’s “groundbreaking approach to community engagement” and its “significant commitment to advance understanding and participation in the arts and sciences.”

Careful Mystery! viewers happily see red, thanks to Masterpiece producer Erin Delaney.

Mystery!’s Mystery Messages Longtime Nine Network members Pat and Mike Forster called Nine a few months ago to discuss a mystery that Nine staffers didn’t even know existed. The Forsters, fans of the Mystery! series, discovered many years ago that certain words in the credits after each episode appeared in red. Different words were highlighted after each episode. Pat recorded the programs, froze the credits and started writing down the words. When assembled, she and her husband were delighted to find quips and comments about the just-viewed show. She recently called Nine to see if we knew the backstory. We didn’t, but after several emails to WGBH, the presenting station for Mystery!, the perpetrator behind the mystery came clean. WGBH Masterpiece producer Erin Delaney said the red-word messages have been inserted in the closing credits since 2010. The idea came from a brainstorming session among the Masterpiece nineNet.org

team, trying to make the credits they create in post-production more fun—clues inserted without fanfare for Mystery!’s most observant mystery fans. So far, 84 episodes have carried the secret messages. Delaney creates most of the messages. “I think about the content of the program and what might be fun for viewers to look up,” she says in an email. “It might be a character’s dying words, or a literary reference (often the case with Inspector Lewis), a quirky British English term, an actor cross-reference to another Masterpiece program, etc. A few Doctor Who references have snuck in due to my longstanding passion for time travel! I always test the words with Internet searches to make sure they lead somewhere interesting for viewers who look them up.”

The Public Media Commons is free and open to the public from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. daily and available for private events. Go to PublicMediaCommons.org for a schedule of events, rental information and more.

Mercy Street follows the lives of two volunteer nurses on opposing sides of the Civil War—New England abolitionist Mary Phinney (Mary Elizabeth Winstead from The Returned) and Confederate supporter Emma Green (newcomer Hannah James). The Green family’s luxury hotel in Alexandria, Virginia, has been transformed into Mansion House, a Union Army hospital tending to the war’s wounded. Inspired by memoirs and letters from real doctors and nurse volunteers at Mansion House Hospital, the drama reveals the stories of those struggling to save lives while managing their own hardships. The six-part series is scheduled to air early in 2016.

Join the Legacy of Thanks Society We have been the beneficiary of, and owe much of our growth and progress to, the generosity of people passionate about our military and committed to our mission: “to lift the spirits of America’s troops and their families.”

The Cat in the Hat (R) appreciates the volunteer efforts of Christie Jehling (L).

that giving my time helps bring our programming to others,” continues Jehling, a Ballwin resident. Jehling, a Nine Network member for five years, enjoys volunteering for special events a couple of times per month. She recently volunteered at a preview event for Last Days in Vietnam and at an open house for the Public Media Commons. “My time at the station is my fun ‘me time,’” says Jehling. One of her favorite community events sponsored by the Nine Network is Dr. Suess’ Birthday Bash; she also likes staffing Nine’s booth at the St. Louis Art Fair. Jehling enjoys working with other volunteers at Nine. “I’ve met so many different people through volunteering, from fellow St. Louis residents to artists from around the world, and I love getting a different perspective through others,” she says. When not volunteering, Jehling works as a full-time mother of three. Some of her favorite hobbies include reading, traveling and watching Kansas City Royals baseball. She grew up watching PBS, and her family loves it now. Jehling’s favorite programs include Great Performances, Mr. Selfridge and Sherlock. To discover a volunteer opportunity that interests you, come to the next volunteer orientation on July 28 at 6:00 p.m. at the Nine Network, 3655 Olive St. Contact volunteer manager Brittany Farmer at bfarmer@ketc.org or (314) 512-9031 to reserve a seat. nineNet.org

Ultimate Restorations

Nine to Grow On

Makeovers That Matter

From the 1880s through World War II, the United States advanced the science of aeronautics, propulsion, navigation and sound with inventions that were both functional and artistic for trains, planes, boats and musical instruments. Sadly, few of these relics from our past remain. Finding stories from coast to coast, Ultimate Restorations presents dramatic, large-scale restorations of items that somehow survived years of obsolescence, neglect and abandonment: a 1901 steam-powered yacht; the world’s largest pipe organ in Atlantic City; a 1920s fire engine from Kansas City; a Wisconsin “fish car” designed to transport live fish by train; a priceless carousel; a World War II spy plane; one of the first U.S. yachts to round Cape Horn; and a famous steam locomotive. Like a how-to program on steroids, Ultimate Restorations reveals how the sheer size of these restorations is daunting, especially when combined with budgets, deadlines and dangerous equipment. There are no blueprints, only clues from history, science, the jungles of Guatemala and the memories of mechanics and veterans. Host Bob McNeil calls it “a love letter to America, recalling the skills, craftsmanship and innovative spirit that made us the economic engine to the world.” In the first episode, McNeil himself oversees the rescue of the Cangarda, the last existing American steam yacht. The once opulent, 125-ton-symbol of the roaring ’20s sat in the mud on the bottom of Boston Harbor like an eyesore. McNeil’s four-year restoration of the 136-foot vessel revives old construction techniques alongside new technologies with the help of the colorful crew of 16

Ultimate Restorations

Devoted craftsmen rescue eight national heirlooms from the junkyard and painstakingly restore them to their original glory in the new, eight-part series Ultimate Restorations. Broadcast Saturdays at 4:00 p.m. beginning July 11, it offers a poignant glimpse of days gone by as it reveals the ambition, innovation and marvels of American engineering. (The first three episodes repeat Monday, August 31 at 1:00 a.m., 2:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m.)

Tightening the last screw on a 1920s fire engine.

Rutherford’s Boat Shop in San Francisco. After 112 years and more than a few setbacks, the Cangarda finally sails again. Here in Missouri, the fourth episode of the series watches as volunteer firefighter Doug Klink and his crew try to keep their sense of humor as they piece back together the Rolls Royce of fire engines, an Ahrens Fox. At one time, the massive vehicle was a shining emblem of 1920s civic pride in Kansas City, a rolling work of art that could shoot water to the top of a 40-story building. Now just a rusty artifact, this surviving Ahrens Fox presents multiple challenges, from the drive shaft to the gold leaf detailing, as devoted restorers work to get it back in shape. The sixth episode features one of the most unusual stories. During the depression of 1911, bringing fingerling fish from the East Coast to stock Midwest lakes as a food source was big business. Railroad cars known as “fish cars” contained water tanks for the small fish and elegantly designed Victorian accommodations for the crew. All of these rare cars have disappeared except the Badger #2. Join a Wisconsin team for a complex restoration and a glimpse into a rarely seen chapter of U.S. history. Ultimate Restorations salutes not only the creators of these one-time modern marvels, but the tenacity of the people who spend time, money and enthusiasm to get them running again. nineNet.org

This hour-long documentary brings to life Seattle in the late 1950s and early ’60s during the 1962 World’s Fair, a six-month celebration of science and technology that drew more than 10 million visitors. In interviews Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen credits seeing the 605-foot Space Needle, Monorail, “Bubbleator” and other exhibits for inspiring his love of technology. Travel guru Rick Steves shares his vivid memory of seeing “exotic” Belgian Waffles for the first time. The Fair also offered an eclectic mix of high art and low culture, from paintings by Roy Lichtenstein and Jasper Johns, to an adult puppet show. The documentary includes footage captured at the fair of astronaut John Glenn; politicians Adlai Stevenson, Richard Nixon, Lyndon Johnson, Robert Kennedy and Hubert H. Humphrey; the Duke of Edinburgh; and performers Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, Peggy Lee, Lawrence Welk, the Lennon Sisters, Bob Hope, Miles Davis and Elvis. Friday, July 3, 6:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.; Saturday, July 4, 7:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.; Sunday, July 5, 3:00 a.m.; Tuesday, July 7, 4:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.

This special thoughtfully examines the 68-year history of nuclear weapons. Filmed in Europe, Japan and the U.S., In My Lifetime focuses on the continuing struggle of citizens, scientists and political leaders working to reduce or eliminate the atomic threat, while others search for ways to build nuclear weapons. The film shifts between historical events, including the Cuban missile crisis and the historic 1986 Reykjavik Summit between Reagan and Gorbachev, to present-day efforts to contain the spread of nuclear weapons. It also details the political and human obstacles impeding a solution to this complex global issue. Friday, July 31, 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.; Saturday, August 1, 1:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
