Dear Friends, Our 2016 Pioneer Spirit Award event was a time of celebration and an opportunity to recognize individuals, organizations and foundations that do so much to strengthen our region and beyond. We are also honored that those we recognized have chosen to support the Nine Network and partner with us in shaping a vibrant future. This year, we recognized Emily Rauh Pulitzer with our Pioneer Spirit Award. And she certainly epitomizes the pioneer spirit. She continues to blaze trails in the arts and strengthen civic life with her vision, determination and philanthropy. The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts and her support of the arts in our region and beyond brought her national recognition with a National Medal of Arts awarded by President Obama in 2012. She also fosters work around the world that encourages and supports nonprofit journalism. We greatly appreciate her support of the Nine Network and her contributions to the Public Media Commons. The Pioneer Spirit Awards event was also a time to celebrate our 62nd anniversary and the continued success of the final phase of our Igniting the Spirit of Possibility campaign. We recognized the JSM Charitable Trust with our Visionary Circle Torchbearer Award. Contributions from the trust in support of the campaign and additional contributions from the James S. McDonnell Family Foundation in support of American Graduate total approximately $1 million. We also recognized new members of our Visionary Leadership Circle for their contributions of $100,000 or more. They included the Berges Family Foundation, Dr. William H. Danforth, and the Missouri Humanities Council. Our special guest for the evening was Hari Sreenivasan, anchor and senior correspondent for PBS NewsHour Weekend. Prior to the event, he broadcast the NewsHour from the Nine Network and was the guest on a taping of the following week’s Stay Tuned. The evening culminated in an inspiring presentation by Marlon Wharton, who founded and serves as teacher, trainer and mentor of the amazing step team Gentlemen of Vision. Then, we were graced by a performance by the young men—the Gentlemen of Vision—whose stories of success were the subject of our recent documentary. I also want you to know about a recent grant of $1.3 million from the Monsanto Company in support of our Igniting the Spirit of Possibility campaign capital fund and a grant from Emerson for our What’s Vital to St. Louis initiative, which combined with Emerson’s previous campaign contributions, totals $2 million in support. A BACKSTAGE PASS TO GROUNDBREAKING MOMENTS IN RECORDED MUSIC New eight-part series charts a century’s worth of innovation and experimentation in the creation of music.
oundbreaking: Stories from the Cutting Edge of Recorded Music, a new PBS series that explores the extraordinary impact of recorded music on the modern world, will make its U.S. broadcast debut on November 14. Soundbreaking was the last project produced by legendary music producer Sir George Martin, who passed away on March 8, 2016. The series combines unprecedented access to some of the most celebrated artists, producers and innovators from across the music spectrum, with rare archival studio footage and an extensive soundtrack, to deliver one of the most wide-ranging series on the art of music recording. Charting a century’s worth of innovation and experimentation in the creation of music, Soundbreaking offers a behind-the-scenes look 4
at the birth of new sounds. From the invention of the microphone to the Moog synthesizer, from the phonograph to digital streaming, Soundbreaking moves between past and present to tell the stories behind the sounds and reveals how innovation redefined not only what we listen to and how we listen to it, but our very sense of what music is and can be. Viewers of all ages will hear the songs they love in a whole new way. Stories include: •G eorge Martin and the Beatles’ groundbreaking work in the studio creates a new paradigm for pop music. •P hil Spector rises as the first “rock star producer.” •P aul Epworth collaborates with Adele on “Rolling in the Deep.” •S tevie Wonder embraces the synthesizer and makes a break with Motown. •G iorgio Moroder fuses R&B with electronica and the dance floor explodes. • The art of sampling gives rise to hip-hop. •M ichael Jackson and Madonna take the art of the music video to new heights. •M iles Davis and Marvin Gaye use the long-playing record for new kinds of expression. An interactive website, soundtrack CD, and companion book with stunning photographs and unique interviews will also accompany the Soundbreaking series. Episode 1 profiles the contrasting styles of some of the most accomplished producers, featuring George Martin, Sam Phillips, Tom Petty, Dr. Dre, and more. Painting with Sound Tuesday, November 15 Learn how the recording studio itself became an instrument. From the advent of magnetic tape, episode 2 charts the evolution of multitrack recording and the ingenuity of artists such as the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, and Fleetwood Mac. The Human Instrument Wednesday, November 16 Celebrate the most essential part of a song and the most challenging to capture—the vocal track. Episode 3 considers the ineffable emotional quality that makes a vocal track truly great, with Adele, Amy Winehouse, and Christina Aguilera.
Going Electric Thursday, November 17 From the invention of the electric guitar to synthesized music, learn how innovators used electricity to unleash new and never-before-heard sounds. Hour 4 reveals the power of technology to continuously redefine music, from Delta blues to the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder, and Devo. Four on the Floor Friday, November 18 Chart the progression of the beat from drum and bass to beat box and beyond—from Little Richard and James Brown to disco with the Bee Gees, EDM and Beyoncé. Witness the endless experimentation that transformed the bedrock of all music in episode 5. The World is Yours Monday, November 21 Meet the pioneers of hip-hop in episode 6 and explore how sampling, the practice of borrowing fragments from existing records, created a new genre of music that took over the world, including Public Enemy, Run DMC, the Beastie Boys, and Beck. Sound and Vision Tuesday, November 22 Trace the rise of MTV and explore how the music video transformed the way we experience music—from David Bowie, Devo, and Madonna to the Eurythmics and Nirvana. In episode 7, learn how a one-time marketing tool became an art form, as well as a powerful mediator between artist and audience. I Am My Music Wednesday, November 23 From the LP to the cassette tape, the CD, and MP3, discover how the listening format of each generation determines not only how and where we listen, but also the manner in which we collect, store, and share the music we love. The final episode features Frank Sinatra, Marvin Gaye, Bob Dylan, and the Grateful Dead.

STRONG SUPPORT FOR IGNITING THE SPIRIT OF POSSIBILITY IN OUR REGION s the Nine Network’s $50 million capacity building campaign moves into its final phase, we have been honored to recently receive significant support from several well-respected institutions in the St. Louis region. We would like to recognize and thank these donors for their important contributions.
Monsanto Company, through its Community Initiatives Program, has provided a $1.3 million grant to the Nine Network. The grant allows Nine to purchase equipment and technology to meet congressionally mandated channel reconfiguration requirements and to meet the challenges of rapidly changing technology. “ Nine is a unique and highly valued community asset that has enriched, educated and entertained our region with thoughtful programming for generations. As a company with strong St. Louis roots, we’re very excited to be working with and providing support to the Nine Network of Public Media.” — Al Mitchell, President, Monsanto Fund & Vice President Community Relations
Emerson has provided a grant in support of our What’s Vital to St. Louis initiative, a multifaceted initiative to engage the community on critical regional issues. This five-year $500,000 grant is in addition to an initial campaign contribution of $1.5 million, bringing their support for the campaign to $2 million.
The James S. McDonnell Family Foundation (JSMFF) has provided a final phase campaign contribution of $475,000 over the next five years to support American Graduate. This recent contribution combined with previous gifts from the JSM Charitable Trust (JSM) brings total support of the campaign to nearly $1 million. These contributions support the Nine Network’s initiative to help assure that all young people in our region have a pathway to success. Support from JSMFF and JSM in both the initial phase and final phase of the campaign has enabled us to bring together a robust network of partners to improve youth outcomes in our region from cradle to career.
Support from the Berges Family Foundation of $200,000 and the William T. Kemper Foundation of $150,000 will provide support to our campaign capital fund. These grants will help ensure that our technology keeps pace with the rapid changes in digital technology and ensure that we are maximizing the community’s investment in Nine.

Nine Networking GOV at International Film Fest The 25th annual St. Louis International Film Festival (SLIFF) will host multiple screenings of the director’s cut of the Nine Network’s Gentlemen of Vision, which premiered on Nine PBS in September. This engrossing documentary follows the members of a competitive step team from St. Louis’s North County suburbs during the 2015-2016 season as they strive to win national competitions, graduate from high school, and position themselves to achieve success in life. True-life Romantic Comedy at Film Series Join our free screening and discussion of Meet the Patels at the Indie Lens Pop-Up community film series. The one-hour-and-28-minute film is followed by a discussion moderated by the Nine Network’s Jim Kirchherr, senior director of content. In this true-life romantic comedy, Meet the Patels explores the influences of culture and identity on the most intense, personal, and important part of one's life—love. Ravi Patel is almost 30, an actor and, worst of all to his traditional Hindu parents, still unmarried. After he breaks up with his white girlfriend, Ravi submits to his parents' wishes and allows them to play matchmaker. The Indie Lens Pop-Up series is presented by the Nine Network of Public Media and the Missouri History Museum, in collaboration with Independent Lens and Independent Television Service. Awards Recognize Nine’s Commitment to Community The Nine Network of Public Media took home four golden statues at the 40th Mid-America Emmy® awards ceremony in Branson, MO, on October 1. Emmy awards from the Mid-America Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences were presented to Nine Network producers and staff for outstanding community service and local programs that showcase St. Louis and address important regional issues. Community Service Award for American Graduate The Nine Network was awarded the Emmy for its work as local and national leader of the American Graduate initiative, public media’s long-term commitment to help young people achieve success in school and in life. New Kids Series Builds Eco Awareness The new animated series Splash and Bubbles, designed to introduce the concepts of ecological balance and the importance of taking care of the ocean to young children, premieres November 23 on Nine PBS. The series focuses on themes of diversity, individuality, interconnectedness and the celebration of learning and discovery. nineNet.org
Splash and Bubbles follows the adventures of Splash, a yellow fusilier fish who has migrated all over the ocean before settling down in Reeftown, where he befriends Bubbles, a Mandarin dragonet whose vivid orange and electric blue coloring matches her colorful personality. Together, Splash, Bubbles and their friends explore the world’s undersea habitats, make new friends and learn about the many different ways life looks and lives in the ocean, celebrating the importance of diversity along the way. “Through the adventures of Splash and Bubbles, we hope to inspire environmentalism, empathy and curiosity about the vast world of marine biology,” said Lisa Henson, CEO of the Jim Henson Company, executive producers of the show. “We hope the series becomes a starting point for children to build confidence in their ability to make a difference in our environment and inspires a lifetime of learning.” Digital content related to the series, including games, apps and parent and educator resources are also available. Hosted, executive produced and written by Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., this four-part series offers a fresh examination of key events and turning points in American race relations and black history over the last five decades. It is animated by viewpoints that have rarely been heard on television, ideas that are not often said out loud, and questions that many are afraid to ask. The Highs and Lows “We are at a critical moment in the black experience in America,” says Gates. “Over the past 50 years, following the remarkable strides made during the civil rights movement of Dr. King, African Americans have achieved a level of cultural, political and economic influence that those early civil rights leaders could hardly have dreamed of. At the same time, poverty remains a stubbornly persistent way of life for far too many African Americans, incarceration rates in our community are at an-all time high and people are crying out to have their basic human dignity recognized, leading some to wonder if things really have changed. This series looks at the rich history of how we arrived where we are today, through all the highs and lows, and poses provocative questions about how we keep up a momentum of progress.” While portraying unprecedented victories, Gates also questions why another swath of African Americans have been left behind—as the country’s class divide has deepened over the last

50 years causing the most vulnerable to suffer in ways that Dr. King and his peers in the civil rights movement would never have thought possible. The series has the distinctive, personal tone of an essay, but it is also filled with compelling reflections on key events that have occurred over the last 50 years from African Americans who shaped our shared history. Among those interviewed are Oprah Winfrey, Nas, Ava DuVernay, Jesse Jackson, Dr. Cornel West, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, Donna Brazile, Robert L. Johnson, DeRay Mckesson, Charlayne Hunter-Gault, former Attorney General Eric Holder and Shonda Rhimes—as well as eyewitnesses to Hurricane Katrina, public intellectuals, education reformers, police officers in communities that have been shaken by racial unrest, and many others. By examining the changes to black America wrought by cultural and political forces, new questions of identity, new modes of communication, a globalizing economy and mass incarceration, Gates asks what the black community has accomplished since 1965—and what it means to be “black” today. Close to 40 programs can be found on Nine World in November to celebrate Native Americans’ significant contributions to the establishment and growth of the U.S.
For the Navajo and Hopi, running is much more than a sport; it is woven into the cultural fabric of their lives. In the rugged canyon lands of Northern Arizona, Navajo and Hopi cross-country runners from two rival high schools vie for the state championship while striving to find their place among their native people and the larger American culture. Win or lose, what they learn over the course of two racing seasons has a dramatic effect on the rest of their lives. Racing the Rez offers a rare view into the surprising complexity and diversity of contemporary reservation life, from the point of view of five teenage boys on the cusp of adulthood.
