Nine Network President and CEO Jack Galmiche (L) with Kent Collins, associate professor and faculty chair of the radio-television journalism faculty at the Missouri School of Journalism and a collaborator on Stay Tuned.

Dear Friends, I want to express my pride and gratitude to you for supporting the Nine Network of Public Media. This year, we not only maintained our position as America’s most watched public television station in prime time, but also achieved national recognition for our leadership in community engagement. We could not have done it without you! As you know, our programming is compelling. But we believe our founding purpose was intended to extend beyond television, to the work we would do together to strengthen civic life in our community. In the 58 years since our first broadcast, technological innovations have given us many new tools for connecting and communicating with one another. It is our job to use them wisely and effectively for the good of our region. Over the last year, we partnered with hundreds of local organizations to address important topics like education, health care and the arts. Working together, we made significant strides toward improving the chances for young people dealing with homelessness, addiction, abuse and neglect. We made significant progress toward improving graduation rates and opportunities for future success for young people in St. Louis and across America. Now, we have begun a partnership with the Regional Health Commission to address the rising use of heroin in our region. In November, two new weekly series will bring focus to topics that challenge us and topics that lift us up.

Stay Tuned, a live, multimedia series on Thursday nights brings together experts, journalists and citizens to discuss local issues. We’re creating this dynamic series in partnership with the acclaimed Reynolds Journalism Institute at the University of Missouri, Columbia. Sunday Arts With Nine presents a full afternoon of arts programming that includes local segments slated to air across the country. This new block of arts programming represents our strong partnerships with local arts organizations as well as our productive relationships with public television stations in other cities. We look forward to generating even more visibility, support and participation for our vibrant arts community. We also recently entered the public phase of our Igniting the Spirit of Possibility campaign, having raised $19 million toward our $25 million goal. These funds are intended to build our capacity to achieve something extraordinary for our region. It is a campaign intended to support the kinds of programs, services and innovations that we believe will set us apart as a region working together for positive change. Thank you for sharing the vision and supporting the work. Yours truly,

Jack Galmiche President and CEO Nine Network of Public Media

Stay tuned . . .

Tune in for Stay Tuned, Nine’s new weekly show that relies on YOUR participation!

I

t wasn’t that long ago when town squares were the center of a community’s life. When confronted by tough issues, people met there formally and informally to hash out problems and possible solutions. The Nine Network takes old-fashioned community conversation to a newfashioned level with the weekly series Stay Tuned, which uses the latest technology to bring people face to face for in-depth discussions of issues important to the long term vitality of the region. Guided by host Casey Nolen the conversation each week focuses on one topic, and participants contribute using a full range of technologies, from television to Twitter, Facebook and Google+Hangouts. The live broadcast relies on participation from the community and a seamless integration of social media. The core of the production takes place in the Nine Network’s Nine

Center of Public Engagement, which has been transformed into an expansive television studio for the broadcasts. Nolen launches each week’s topic, then corrals, summarizes, distills, questions and incites the opinions coming in online, on video monitors and in person in the Nine Center. He can converse live with experts anywhere in the world who appear in a bank of monitors mounted on the wall behind him. In studio, Nine’s Emily Haight presents facts and figures via an infographic on the topic being discussed. A live studio audience, logged into their Facebook and Twitter accounts, sits to Nolen’s right, supplying a steady stream of dialogue about the issue being explored. Viewers at home can join in through the same

media. Social media producer Ed Reggi displays the comments coming through on Facebook and Twitter and reports on the trends and themes he sees. Nolen also takes the discussion to the community roundtable, represented at any one time by four people from an approximately 20-person group of community members who rotate appearing on the show. Throughout each show, Nolen brings overarching context to the issues through interviews with experts, all while the buzz of exchanging ideas continues among participants in the background. “Stay Tuned builds on the Nine Network’s role as a trusted convener,” says Nine Network President and CEO Jack Galmiche. “We are connecting

people around the issues that are most important to them and their communities.” Stay Tuned represents a joint effort by the Nine Network of Public Media and the Reynolds Journalism Institute at the University of Missouri Columbia to spur meaningful conversation and provide a pathway for people to connect and impact the community. The convergence of technologies and people who come together for each live program presented dozens of technical and engineering challenges, requiring weeks of rehearsals to coordinate or fine tune elements such as camera movements, control room switching and lighting. The result is a groundbreaking series that maximizes public participation.

“We have thrown the script out the window,” says Nolen, who is also a multimedia journalist at KSDK. “We’re taking risks and trying to do something different in terms of format. It gives me the space to think. So much of television and our lives is very fast. Stay Tuned gives us all the space to think and go deeper on issues.” Stay Tuned debuts November 8 at 9:00 p.m. after Doc Martin with a discussion about the impact of the elections. It will also be streamed every week online at nineNet.org. Viewers are not only welcomed but encouraged to join in during the broadcast, or continue the conversation afterward, via the Nine Network’s Facebook wall or on Twitter using the hashtag #StayTunedSTL. 

Sunday Arts, a half-hour magazine series, debuts at 1:00 p.m., followed at 1:30 p.m. by Living St. Louis: Best of the Arts, a collection of favorite arts stories first broadcast on Living St. Louis. A variety of arts specials will round out the block’s remaining two hours. Stories on Sunday Arts represent a collaboration among 30 PBS stations across the country in which they pool and share their best arts segments. Each episode of Sunday Arts will be a mix of contributions by other stations and stories about St. Louis’ own creative community. St. Louis stories by series producer and host Patrick Murphy, in turn, will air in markets throughout the United States.

Nine Networking Coverage of Election 2012 On the night before Election Day, most voters will know who they’re supporting for president, but many may not be so sure who they’ll select for the many other races that are also up for grabs on November 6. Beyond November Voters’ Guide, broadcast twice on November 5 at 7:00 p.m. (live) and 10:00 p.m., focuses on local candidates and issues that voters will face the next day.

school seniors has used heroin. The problem isn’t tied to bad neighborhoods; on a local website that offers information about heroin addiction, a page memorializes young people who succumbed to the drug from schools such as Lindbergh, Rockwood Summit and Lafayette. One way for parents and young people to escape the ravages of heroin addiction is to educate families. Knowing how people are attracted to and hooked on the drug

Beyond November Voters’ Guide will summarize how races and issues have evolved and compare where candidates stand on those issues. Host Jim Kirchherr of the Nine Network will join reporters from the St. Louis Beacon and St. Louis Public Radio to look at Missouri’s statewide races, particularly the Senate race between Todd Akin and Claire McCaskill, the 12th congressional race in Illinois, ballot measures and issues affecting the economy and education. On Election Day itself, from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., Nine PBS will present national coverage on PBS NewsHour Election Night 2012: A Special Report, co-anchored by Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff. At the same time on the Nine World channel, the Nine Network will broadcast complete local election coverage via a simulcast with KSDK. The broadcast will originate from both Nine and KSDK’s studios and include input from Nine Network and Beacon reporters. Beyond November Voters’ Guide is just one element of the Nine Network’s indepth exploration of the election and its aftermath. In a partnership with the St. Louis Beacon and St. Louis Public Radio, headed by former St. Louis Post-Dispatch editor Richard H. Weiss, the Beyond November initiative also offers a website (beyondnovember.org) and daily email updates to engage the community in the democratic process. As its name implies, the Beyond November initiative doesn’t end with Election Day. The reporting will continue into 2013 with analysis and stories about how well elected officials are hewing to their campaign promises. Says Kirchherr, “Many media organizations put lots of effort into covering the horse race—who wins and loses—then they walk away. Beyond November will stick with the story and hold the winning candidates accountable.”

Tony Tiano Anthony S. Tiano, the 10th executive director of KETC, passed away August 12 at his home in New Mexico.

‘voice of the future of PBS’ who blasted in from Madison with a mandate to shake things up...He was passionate about moving PBS to the next level.”

Tony Tiano was 35 years old when he came to St. Louis in October 1976 from public television station WHA in Madison, Wisconsin. He immediately pumped new energy and vitality into Channel 9, grabbing the attention of media critics and the public. Before the year was out, Tiano orchestrated a New Year’s Eve party broadcast from the studio that featured comedian Steve Martin and John McEuen of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Five months later, the station hauled its studio cameras and control room equipment to the S.S. Admiral riverboat for a live, two-hour simulcast special with performances by Blood, Sweat and Tears, comedian Robert Klein and Singleton Palmer. It was KETC’s first remote broadcast.

Keep up the good work. And never compromise your standards. Sincerely, William R. Shelton President/CEO Left Field Creative

Former Channel 9 Executive Director Tony Tiano circa 1976.

“I sincerely believe that the turning point in our popularity cycle came two years ago when Tony Tiano arrived at the station,” wrote KETC Board Vice Chairman J. Arthur Baer II in 1978. “He sought and created an excitement in KETC’s programming [that] had formerly been seen only on commercial stations in St. Louis.”

Tiano left KETC in 1978 for public television station KQED in San Francisco. He moved on in 1993 to run his own production company in New Mexico, which has supplied many programs that have aired on Nine, including America’s Rising Star Chefs and Healthy Aging, the Perricone Prescription.

Also under Tiano’s leadership, Channel 9 rebranded itself as “the New Nine”; the Great TV Auction aired from the vacant Union Station; the small program guide Kaleidoscope grew from a pamphlet to a magazine; and KETC installed a satellite receiver to acquire PBS programs directly, became a member of program providers EEN and SIP, revamped the instructional television lineup, increased the program acquisition budget, started purchasing ratings information and established program videotaping rights for schools.

that stresses quality over quantity and performance over profit. As we see education and the arts erode on a societal basis, the role of PBS in America has never been more important. You, KETC, and PBS can count on my total support today, tomorrow and forever. Those who wish to abandon PBS represent little more than a short-sided reflection of the views and opinions which jeopardize our country as a whole.

Every day tens of thousands of people in the region turn on the Nine Network to be inspired, educated, informed and entertained with highquality programming that is free of commercial interruption. Barbara Anderson says she has three passions: advocating for people with mental disabilities, quality television and volunteering. Throughout her life she’s done them all, and she appreciates how neatly her three passions have dovetailed. Anderson, a resident of the Southwest Garden neighborhood in the city, has been a member of Nine for more than 30 years. She volunteered with Nine’s TV auctions in the 1980s, worked in production at KSDK for 24 years and worked for 16 years at the St. Louis Psychiatric Rehabilitation Center in development, public relations and managing the volunteer program. Now retired, Anderson rejoined Nine’s volunteer pool about three years ago. “I wanted to keep my hand in media somehow, meet more new people and keep my brain cells from going dead,” she says. “People don’t realize the benefits of volunteering.” Anderson has stepped up to the plate many times for Nine, doing everything from stuffing letters to working an eight-hour day at the Trash or Treasure event. “Working with the Nine Network staff is a pleasure,” Anderson Continued on page 14

emphasizes. “Everyone tries to make the volunteers comfortable with their tasks and provide the appropriate tools to complete them. They’re flexible with scheduling time and they feed us well! What’s not to like?” Anderson has volunteered at many organizations for more than 48 years. “I have worked with all populations, able bodied and disabled, young and old, educated or not, wealthy or poor. Currently I volunteer for the Missouri Department of Mental Health state advisory council, the fee

dispute committee of the Missouri Bar Association, the Southwest Garden Neighborhood Association and, of course, KETC/9.” “Sometimes I sleep, too,” she jokes. Volunteers are always needed and welcome. The next volunteer orientation is Tuesday, November 27 at 6:00 p.m. at the Nine Network, 3655 Olive St. There will be refreshments and a short tour. Space is limited so contact volunteer manager Brittany Farmer by November 26 to reserve a seat. Email bfarmer@ketc.org or call (314) 512-9031.  Volunteer Barbara Anderson outside the Nine Network.

Mary did it. So can you. Here’s how. Mary did it with a Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA). Mary and her best friend loved the programming on the Nine Network. Mary donated $20,000 that she received from the settlement of her friend’s estate to set up a CGA to support the Nine Network and provide herself with income for life.

First,

Mary transferred $20,000 cash to the Nine Network of Public Media.

After that,

she received an immediate tax deduction of $10,429 based on her age.

Then,

she began to receive an annual annuity worth 7.6% or $1,520, based on her age and most of her income will be tax free.

Lastly,

at the end of Mary’s life, the remaining balance in the annuity will pass to the Nine Network. nineNet.org

The trust and appreciation our community has for the Nine Network is based on the value and services we provide. Content on air and online that expands the minds of children and adults. Documentaries that open up new worlds. Non-commercialized news that keeps citizens informed on current events. Programming that brings local and national arts, theater and music to everyone. Partnerships with St. Louis area organizations that address challenging issues and focus our collective resources on solutions.

Find Out What’s Cooking in The Mind of a Chef From ramen to rotting bananas, from Copenhagen to Kentucky, from pork buns to golf clubs, The Mind of a Chef rethinks the boundaries of a travel/cooking show. It is a series that dares to make connections between food and nature, science, music, art, sports, history and pretty much anything else a renowned chef can stir up. The Mind of a Chef (Saturdays, 11:30 a.m. beginning November 10 and Thursdays, 10:00 p.m. beginning December 13) is narrated by celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain. Season one explores the “contrarian cooking” world of chef David Chang, named by Time magazine as one of the world’s “100 most influential people.” Whether in his kitchens in New York and Australia, or traveling for inspiration to Japan, Denmark, Spain or Montreal, the series reveals the “mind of a chef in overdrive.” 16

For the Rights of All: Ending Jim Crow in Alaska Narrator Peter Coyote traces the Native Alaskan civil-rights movement. The film profiles the remarkable people behind the victories for citizenship, voting rights and school desegregation, including Alberta Schenck Adams (Alaska’s “Rosa Parks”) and Elizabeth Peratrovich (pictured), an unassuming young woman whose compelling testimony helped sway the Alaska State Senate to pass the first civil-rights bill since the Civil War. Sunday, November 4 at 8:00 a.m., 4:00 p.m., 10:00 p.m.; Monday, November 5, 2:00 a.m.; Wednesday, November 7, 4:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.

Okie Noodling For hundreds of years, thrill-seeking fishermen in the South have been diving into murky creeks, rivers and lakes in search of bank-dwelling catfish. In this 2002 film and its sequel, filmmaker Bradley Beesley focuses on the strange subculture of bare-handed catfishing, chronicles the sport’s evolution over the last decade and meets some of the eccentric fishermen en route to the largest noodling tournament in the United States. The second installment also explores legalization issues and commercialization of this once backwoods practice.
