Dear Friends, Civic pride is an important characteristic of a healthy, thriving community. But, as you know, the foundation for civic pride is civic responsibility. We all recognize that to be responsible citizens, we must be well informed, but sometimes it’s hard to know what information to trust. We have built our reputation on trust. And the foundation of trust we have established in the St. Louis region has enabled us to bring hundreds of community partners to the table. Whether we’re collaborating with arts organizations on local programming or working with community groups on issues related to young people, trust is the key to our success. Throughout this issue of nineMagazine you’ll see evidence of collaborations with trusted local and national organizations that are focused on strengthening civic and cultural life. From our Homeland initiative on immigration and our piece on the Symphony’s pre-Europe concert, to our Next Avenue partnership with Twin Cities Public Television in Minnesota and our Community Cinema Series with the Missouri History Museum, we believe in the value of trusted partnerships.

many things together that none of us would be able to achieve alone. Our new collaboration with St. Louis Public Radio and the St. Louis Beacon on the upcoming election is a perfect example. We hope you will visit our new election website BeyondNovember.org. Another important characteristic of our partnerships is long-term commitment. We’re about to mark the one-year anniversary of our local and national work on American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen. On September 22, we will be among scores of public television stations across the country broadcasting American Graduate Day, seven hours of stories related to our collaborative work to improve high school graduation rates. As always, thank you for your support. You help strengthen our region in so many ways. Yours truly,

Jack Galmiche President and CEO Nine Network of Public Media

ong before she became a nurse or an author, Jennifer Lee left school in England as a teenager to train to become a secretary, a perfectly good occupation for a nice young lady in the 1950s. It wasn’t long, though, before she went back to school determined to test her mettle in a far more challenging environment, as a nurse midwife in the abject, gritty slums of London’s East End. Fifty years later Lee (who in the meantime married and became Jennifer Worth), wrote Call the Midwife, the first of three books about her experiences as a 22-year-old delivering babies in the East End’s often squalid conditions. Last year the BBC adapted Worth’s memoirs and created a six-part series that debuted as the highest-rated drama in BBC history. On September 30, Call the Midwife premieres on Nine PBS. Call the Midwife is a moving and intimate story of midwifery in the East End in the 1950s. When Jenny Lee first arrives, she knows nothing about hardship, poverty or indeed, life itself. Raised in the wealthy English countryside, she’s previously spent time in Paris and could have been anything. The series follows Jenny and her fellow midwives, attached to an order of nursing nuns, as they navigate the crowded East End streets teeming with children, workers and a culture remarkably different from anything they’ve ever imagined. Alongside the fictional Sisters of St. Raymond Nonnatus (the real nuns who worked with Lee were members of the Community of St. John the Divine, who had been active Anglican nursing nuns in the East End since the beginning of the 20th century), Jenny is part of a team of midwives who visit the expectant mothers in an area called Poplar, providing the poorest women with the best possible care. The life that greets Jenny is a world

Call the Midwife airs Sundays at 7:00 p.m. beginning September 30 and will be rebroadcast Tuesdays at 1:00 a.m. beginning October 2 and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. beginning October 6. Because of mature themes, viewer discretion is advised.

away from what she’s used to—either at home or in the hospitals where she was trained. Families of between six and 10 children are commonplace—and with just one eight-bed maternity ward to serve the whole district, most deliveries take place at home. Few homes have indoor sanitation and none have hot running water. Recalled the real-life Worth in an interview quoted in The Telegraph, “There was no law, no lighting, bedbugs and fleas. It was a hidden place, not written about at all.” The drama unfolds as Jenny meets her patients for the first time—women like Conchita, who is on her 25th pregnancy, and Mary, a prostitute and pregnant for the first time at just 15. Initially shocked by the health and living conditions of the East End, Jenny soon learns to admire the families she works with, along with the sisters and fellow midwives who witness the daily drama of life in this vibrant community. The series was adapted with the guidance of Jennifer Worth, who worked closely with Neal Street Productions and screenwriter Heidi Thomas (Upstairs Downstairs, Cranford) until she passed away shortly before filming began in summer 2011. Executive producer Pippa Harris says, “Call the Midwife has excited the imagination of viewers in the U.K., and I am confident it will do the same in the U.S. Heidi Thomas’ witty and emotional scripts have perfectly captured a unique snapshot of British history, but the universal themes of childbirth, nursing and parenthood ring true throughout the world.” Starring newcomer Jessica Raine as Jenny, the cast includes Jenny Agutter (The Railway Children), Pam Ferris (Little Dorrit), Miranda Hart and Judy Parfitt (Girl With a Pearl Earring, Little Dorrit). Vanessa Redgrave provides narration as the mature Jenny. Screenwriter Thomas says, “Most of my adaptations have been of 19th-century novels, Cranford, for example, so I was looking for something a little more modern—1957 feels bang-up-to-the-minute for me! However, as soon as I started reading I realized that Call the Midwife was 6

actually a very profound social document, a depiction of a world with which we can all identify, but which has vanished from our view. It was funny and it was touching and I simply could not put it down. I was up till three in the morning, turning the pages, because I just felt compelled to devour it all at one sitting. And every woman I have ever met who has read the books has said exactly the same.” Executive producer Pippa Harris was looking for a feature film project when she found the book Call the Midwife in 2007. She says, "It was the mixture of wonderful characters, gripping storylines and the combination of humor and pathos that made me think it would work well on TV. I loved the fact that Jennifer’s writing gives you an insight into a recent, yet long-vanished world. Although she was only writing about the late ’50s, this post-war period in the East End was extremely tough. Surrounded by bomb damage, and sometimes living in slum conditions, women gave birth to baby after baby often with no running water, clean sheets or pain relief. Yet despite the hardship, Jennifer's books are filled with warmth and humor and show the powerful bonds of family and community that held people together.” “I sincerely hope that I have captured even an ounce of the incredible heart and courage of the nuns, midwives and the people whose lives they became such a big part of,” says Jamie Payne, one of the series’ two directors. “The inhabitants of Poplar in 1957 had very little but hope and humor dominated their lives. I hope that each episode captures their incredible, inspiring attitude to life, family and love.” A second season of the series has already been commissioned and will debut in the United Kingdom next year. Call the Midwife is a fascinating portrayal of birth, life, death and a community on the brink of huge social change, offering a gripping insight into a world that is so drastically different from how we live now.  Above: The midwives and their friends enjoy some time off work. voters on politics and public policy issues in our region and to give citizens a platform to engage in ongoing conversations about issues that concern them.

Voters Guide Right now, elections are a hot topic. Come November, your vote will help put in office people who will chart the country’s course over the next two to six years. But after November— what then? Beyond November is a joint initiative of the Nine Network, the St. Louis Beacon and St. Louis Public Radio to hold public officials and candidates accountable for their words and deeds during the election season and beyond. Under the leadership of managing editor Richard H. Weiss, a former editor at the St. Louis PostDispatch, the Beyond November public media partners also are combining resources to educate

Bob McCabe (R) of St. Louis Public Radio in a promo on Nine for Beyond November.

The BeyondNovember.org website aggregates all the information generated by the three partner organizations. There you’ll find articles, radio stories and videos about campaign coverage and election issues, commentaries, and podcasts, as well as links to Beyond November on Facebook, Twitter and GooglePlus. The home page provides a comprehensive voter’s guide, tailored to individual voters by simply typing in an address, city and zip code. The guide will then show you not only the ballot you’ll see on election day, but side-byside comparisons of every candidate and detailed descriptions of where they stand on major issues, plus links to where you can read and hear more.

Every high school across America has one or two students who always get the leads in the musical or the

big solos in glee club. What happens when those high-school stars compete in a larger arena against hundreds of other high-school stars just like them? Those are the students in Broadway or Bust, a three-part documentary series that tracks the real-life stories of 60 of America’s top high-school musical performers as they participate in the ultimate competition to find the nation’s best young rising stars. Part competition, part performance and part non-fiction drama, the series starts with regional theater competitions, then moves to New York City, where the best of the best take part in a grueling drama boot camp and then compete in the National High School Musical Theater Awards (a.k.a. The Jimmy Awards). Jekyll and Hyde Broadway stars Constantine Maroulis and Deborah Cox host. Broadway or Bust airs Sundays at 7:00 p.m. beginning September 9 and repeats September 11 at 12:30 a.m., and September 18 and 25 at 1:00 a.m. Continued on page 10

The first came in a letter from a group of ladies who call themselves the Channel Nine Bridge Club. Adds Wolff, “Even with the many choices in television viewing, Channel 9 continues to provide quality family entertainment.” The other surprise came from Pi Pizzeria. During one week in July, Pi’s roving food truck donated 50 percent of all food sales to Nine. Thank you to the Channel Nine Bridge Club and Pi Pizzeria for your generous and unexpected gifts!

Distinctively Creative Revel in the beauty of the internationally celebrated National Quilt Museum while immersing in Paducah’s distinctively creative culture.

All summer long, the St. Louis Symphony practiced...and practiced some more. For their first international tour since 1998, the musicians and conductor David Robertson perfected every note. But before packing up their instruments for the September 4–7 excursion to London, Berlin, Lucerne and Paris, the group gave St. Louisans a chance to check out their program first.

For Edward Johnson Jr., customer service is a specialty. A resident of the Central West End and a St. Louis native, Johnson has been volunteering at the Nine Network for two years. He first became involved at Nine as a parttime employee answering phones for pledge drives. He enjoyed it so much, he decided to stay on as a volunteer. Johnson takes pride in his ability to work with people and has done everything from assisting in pledge drives to helping with Nine’s regular volunteer orientation sessions. He nineNet.org

says that his passion for customer service and the camaraderie of the people at Nine are what keep him always coming back for more. “It is the most rewarding job ever because of the people,” claims Johnson. He splits his volunteer time between Nine and the St. Louis VA Medical Center-Jefferson Barracks Division as a physical therapy assistant where he transports patients and chats with them to ease their worries. Thanks to his contagious smile and vivacious personality, Johnson’s ability to lift spirits is almost second nature. When not volunteering, Johnson enjoys writing prose, going to the movies and seeing theatrical productions. He even wrote, directed, produced and starred in two plays at the Jefferson Barracks VA Medical Center. His kind spirit and can-do attitude bring smiles to everyone around him at Nine, while he states that his inspiration comes from the people he interacts with.

Nine to Grow On A new generation of preschool “neighbors” will get to experience the Neighborhood of Make-Believe when Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood premieres September 3 on Nine PBS. The first TV series inspired by the iconic, award-winning Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood from The Fred Rogers Company stars 4-year-old Daniel Tiger, son of the original program’s Daniel Striped Tiger, who invites young viewers into his world. As they follow and share Daniel’s everyday adventures, preschoolers ages 2–4 and their families learn fun and practical strategies and skills necessary for growing and learning. Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood premieres Monday, September 3, at 10:00 a.m. with a special one-hour block of two back-toback episodes. The series continues daily Monday–Friday at 10:00 a.m. Daniel starts his day by donning his red sweater, tying his sneakers and inviting his preschool pals at home into the bright and lively Neighborhood of Make-Believe. Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood features the next generation of the original characters from Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. Daniel’s best friend is O the Owl, who lives with his Uncle X in the tree next door to Katerina Kittycat, daughter of Henrietta Pussycat. Daniel also loves to visit Prince

Wednesday, the youngest member of the royal family headed by King Friday, in his castle; and Miss Elaina, who lives with her parents, Lady Elaine Fairchilde and Music Man Stan, in the Museum-Go-Round. The familiar red trolley “ding dings” its way all around the Neighborhood.

New in the Neighborhood

Daniel Tiger begins his day in a familiar way, by putting on his shoes and sweater.

The series’ stories are based on extensive input from a wide range of early learning specialists, formative research with children and the benefit of more than 40 years of the work of Fred Rogers. It all adds up to a powerful tool for parents: an entertaining and thoughtful guide for today’s families that integrates music, interactivity and a researchbased curriculum.

Martha Stewart’s Cooking School Receiving a handwritten invitation to her farm from Martha Stewart herself is out of reach for nearly every fan of the famed lifestyle doyenne. But it’s still possible to get expert schooling from Stewart via Martha Stewart’s Cooking School, a culinary master class taught by Stewart in this new, 13-part series.

Whether you like your eggs over easy or sunny-side up, Stewart shows how to prepare them properly every time, with easy-tomaster techniques and tips. She

The series, inspired by her bestselling book Martha Stewart’s Cooking School: Lessons and Recipes for the Home Cook, debuts Monday, October 8 at 1:00 p.m. on Nine PBS. (It’s repeated Saturdays at 2:00 p.m. beginning October13.) In each 30-minute episode, Stewart demonstrates classic cooking techniques and basics.

prepares a quick, fresh-tasting, better-than-anything-from-ajar marinara sauce using only four ingredients. Viewers will learn how to make very simple vegetable side dishes including steamed spinach, sautéed broccoli rabe, roasted cauliflower “steaks,” brown sugar–glazed carrots, sauteed sugar snap peas and shelled peas with mint and lemony kale salad. By focusing on one concept per episode (from roasting to poaching and braising to blanching) and using her signature step-by-step, how-to teaching process, Stewart illustrates the building blocks of recipes everyone should know.
