Dear Friends, Fall 2011 promises to be an exciting and rewarding time for the Nine Network of Public Media and our community of supporters. Our stellar lineup of fall programs includes new series of Downton Abbey and Doc Martin, the PBS Arts Fall Festival and Prohibition. And we are engaging people of all ages in compelling content on many platforms. Our new season of the Community Cinema Series at the Missouri History Museum begins on September 1 with Pray the Devil Back to Hell, a documentary produced by philanthropist Abigail Disney, who will be present to provide her insights on the story of the powerful Liberian women depicted in her film. Our commemoration of the 10th anniversary of 9/11 includes a full evening of programs highlighted by our broadcast of the St. Louis 9/11 Memorial in Music at the Sheldon Concert Hall. This extraordinary interfaith event will feature a presentation of the colors by city and county first responders, an invocation by Sen. John Danforth, and a rich program of music performed by operatic soprano Christine Brewer, a St. Louis Symphony string quartet and various St. Louis-area faith communities. Our broadcast will air on September 11 at 8:00 p.m. On September 19, we are hosting the very first event at the newly restored Peabody Opera House, with Ken Burns and Lynn Novick and a sneak preview of their documentary
Prohibition. The event is truly a triple-header, inviting everyone to step into the magic of the Peabody for an unforgettable experience with two of the most highly acclaimed documentary filmmakers in history sharing a powerful American story. Ken Burns and Lynn Novick will also speak to students at Webster University that day. And high school students in our Nine Academy video classes are using the topic of Prohibition as the catalyst for dialogue on civics and democracy. Also this fall, I hope you will watch for our local and national launch of American Graduate as well as Youth at Risk: Finding Solutions Together. We believe both initiatives will make a significant difference in the life of our community and in the lives of our young people. Thank you for your support. Your investment in the Nine Network enables us to make a more powerful investment in the future of our region. Yours truly,
Jack Galmiche President and CEO Nine Network of Public Media

Ken Burns and Lynn Novick explore Americans' response to the 18th Amendment: speakeasies, bootleggers and bathtub gin.
P
rohibition, a new three-part, six-hour documentary series by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, tells the true story of the rise, rule and fall of the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. It was called “the Noble Experiment,” but it was in fact one of America’s most notorious civic failures, an object lesson in the challenge of legislating human behavior. “Alcoholism has been a devastating human Lynn Novick (L) and Ken Burns. problem for hundreds of years, but prohibiting the sale and manufacture of alcohol did not solve it,” says Burns. “The entire history of the Constitution had been about extending liberties and freedom, until Prohibition. Its impact on our society was profound and widespread. It transformed our politics, our relationship with the government, our justice system, and our most intimate relationships.” “We know now, of course, that Prohibition didn’t work,” adds Novick. “But at the time, it really did seem like a good idea to a lot of people, who saw the Constitution as the moral foundation of American society. The unintended consequences of the 18th Amendment and the Volstead Act are stunning to contemplate, and make Prohibition an utterly relevant, cautionary tale about the dangers of believing there can ever be a quick fix for complex social problems.” The series features music by Wynton Marsalis and the voice talents of Tom Hanks, Jeremy Irons, Paul Giamatti, Oliver Platt, John Lithgow, Samuel L. Jackson, Patricia Clarkson, Adam Arkin, Sam Waterston, Josh Lucas and others. The narrator is Peter Coyote.
Add together Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, their documentary Prohibition, and Nine’s exclusive public event in the newly renovated Peabody Opera House, and you have the exact ingredients for a magically amazing evening. The public is invited to attend the Prohibition event at the Peabody Opera House on Monday, September 19 at 7:30 p.m. (two weeks before the venue’s official opening night). Join Ken Burns and Lynn Novick as they screen a preview of Prohibition and discuss the documentary’s themes, their research and St. Louis’ significant role in the film. Planning for what was once Kiel Opera House began during Prohibition; it opened in 1934, not long after Prohibition ended. Now that Prohibition is back, the newly christened Peabody Opera House opens again. Tickets to the Prohibition event are $15 and are available through Ticketmaster at ticketmaster.com or 1-800-7453000. For more information, visit nineNet.org.
Prohibition begins with the story of America’s growing concern about alcohol abuse in the 19th century. Since the early years of the American republic, alcohol had been embedded in the fabric of American culture. But by 1830, the average American over 15 years old consumed nearly seven gallons of pure alcohol a year, three times as much as we drink today. After the Civil War, the country’s population swelled with immigrants, who brought their drinking customs with them from Ireland, Germany, Italy and other European countries. Alcohol abuse wreaked havoc on the lives of many families. Saloons and taverns flourished with the growing availability of hard liquor, and with them, a culture of men who neglected and abused their wives and children in favor of liquor. Many feared that the American social fabric would disintegrate. Continued on page 6

As a wave of spiritual fervor for reform swept the country, many women and men began to see alcohol as a scourge. The temperance campaign ignited, spearheaded by the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union. Women such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Frances Willard first demanded temperance, then outright prohibition. Carrie Nation and her Home Defenders Army brought publicity by attacking Kansas bars with stones and hatchets, and the hugely powerful Anti-Saloon League (ASL) formed to push for an amendment to the Constitution banning the sale and manufacture of alcohol nationally. Most politicians dared not defy the ASL, and in 1917 the 18th Amendment sailed through both Houses of Congress; it was ratified by the states in just 13 months. When the amendment was signed into law, Prohibitionists rejoiced that America had become officially dry. But Americans were about to discover that making Prohibition the law of the land had been one thing; enforcing it would be another. In 1920, Prohibition went into effect, making it illegal to manufacture, transport or sell intoxicating liquor. For the next 13 years, America would be split by a fierce cultural divide between “wets” and “drys.” While a significant portion of the country was willing to adapt to the new law, others were shocked at the legal exemptions and enforcement inconsistencies of the Volstead Act. Prohibition turned law-abiding citizens into criminals, made a mockery of the justice system, caused illicit drinking to seem glamorous and fun, encouraged neighborhood gangs to become national crime syndicates, permitted government officials to bend and sometimes even break the law, and fostered cynicism and hypocrisy that corroded the social contract all across the country. As weaknesses in the law and its enforcement became clear, millions found ways to exploit it. nineNet.org

Prohibition impacted the economy particularly in St. Louis. Close to 50 breweries combined to make a thriving beer industry until Prohibition sent alcohol production and consumption underground. The St. Louis story is featured in Burns’ documentary. Drys had hoped Prohibition would make the country a safer place, but the law had many victims. Honest policemen were killed on the job, unlucky drinkers were poisoned by adulterated liquor and overzealous federal agents violated civil rights just to make a bust. Alcoholism still existed, and may have even increased, as women began to drink in the speakeasies that replaced the maleonly saloon. Support for Prohibition diminished in the mid-1920s as the playfulness of sneaking around for a drink gave way to disenchantment with its glaring unintended consequences. By criminalizing one of the nation’s largest industries, the law gave savvy gangsters a way to make huge profits, and as they grew in power, rival outfits wreaked havoc in cities across the country. The burgeoning tabloid newspaper industry fanned the frenzy with sensational headlines and front-page photographs of murder scenes, while Al Capone held press conferences and signed autographs. The wealthy Pauline Sabin began publicly decrying that Prohibition had divided the nation into “wets, drys, and hypocrites.” Nearly a century before, women had hoped Prohibition would make the country a safer place for their children. But by the late 1920s many American women believed that the “Noble Experiment” had failed. Sabin unified women of all classes, refuting the notion that nineNet.org
all women supported Prohibition and denouncing the law itself as the greatest threat to their families. Sabin and others argued that repeal would bring in tax revenue and provide desperately needed jobs.
After the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1932, Congress easily passed the 21st Amendment, which repealed the 18th, and the states quickly ratified it. In December 1933, Americans could legally buy a drink for the first time in 13 years.

The Nine Network’s Vice President of Production Patrick Murphy has served as host of the St. Louis Speaker Series since the end of its second season in 1999. Throughout the years, he has met Henry Kissinger, Colin Powell, Robert Redford, Bob Woodward, Amy Tan, Alan Alda, Jane Goodall and dozens of other fascinating public figures. Not only does Murphy have arguably the best seat in the house, but he also gets to attend each invitation-only, pre-show dinner for the given night’s honored guest. A special dinner in particular for Murphy was with the late, revered broadcaster Walter Cronkite. “I was so pleased to discover he was real, down to earth and funny,” says Murphy, “and he and his wife, Betsy, were obviously crazy about each other. When Walter was telling a story at dinner, Betsy rolled her eyes and deadpanned, ‘Oh, Walter, not the story about crashing behind enemy lines on D-Day again.’” Another fond memory for Murphy was his interaction with former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. “When she came on stage, she reminded me of my grandmother,” explains Murphy, “so I gave her a nineNet.org
kiss on the cheek. She looked quite shocked, and I thought I had really messed up. But, a couple of weeks later she wrote me a personal letter telling me what a great time she had during our interview—my first mail ever from the House of Lords. Yeah, I framed it.” Murphy says the best part of hosting the St. Louis Speakers Series is having the opportunity to observe up close some of the most interesting people in the world. This season, Murphy is especially looking forward to meeting Tom Brokaw. The St. Louis Speakers Series is hosted by Maryville University and sponsored in part by the Nine Network of Public Media. St. Louis Teacher Is PBS Innovator The Nine Network congratulates Susan Carter, a kindergarten teacher at Glenridge Elementary School in the Clayton School District, who was one of 12 top educators in the country chosen as a first-place winner in the second annual PBS Teachers Innovation Awards. The award recognizes educators’ creative and inventive use of public media to engage students and improve learning. Carter’s winning entry demonstrated how she used the PBS programs Curious George and Design Squad to introduce engineering concepts to her kindergarten students. She searched online for engineeringthemed segments of the series through the PBS Teachers website. After viewing children on the television shows design and build structures with candy and sticks, Carter encouraged her students to draw blueprints and then make their own structures out of materials in the classroom.

Youth at Risk: Finding Solutions Together Young people affected by homelessness, addiction or abuse are not likely to ask for help. But early intervention with effective, integrated services is critical. And most of the services are available at no charge. That is why the Nine Network is partnering with the St. Louis County Children’s Service Fund to launch an initiative to connect people in our region to needed services. Youth at Risk: Finding Solutions Together will address a range of issues affecting youth from childhood to age 25. The partners will work to create better understanding of the issues and how effective mental health care positively impacts the community. The Nine Network is providing video classes through the Nine Academy to its Youth at Risk partners so they can learn how to use video to tell their organizations’ important stories. THE REPERTORY THEATRE OF ST. LOUIS eventually found a list of the plane’s crew members. When he typed in crew member Allen Sabol’s name, he discovered a Living St. Louis story produced by Patrick Murphy during Nine’s 2007 initiative Your Stories: St. Louis Remembers World War II. In it Sabol, of University City, told how he and the other men aboard the Daisy Mae had to bail out over Germany, were captured, imprisoned and forced on a brutal evacuation march in the dead of winter. Petersen called Sabol, who was stunned to hear that his plane had been found and was shaken by the memories it stirred. “Mr. Sabol and I have been in touch regularly since we did that segment some years ago,” says Murphy. “He still lives with his war experiences and feels a special closeness to Nine for listening to him and helping him tell his story. It is amazing that after 67 years, it has come full circle, in part because of our efforts.” View Allen Sabol’s Living St. Louis segment on nineNet.org.

The Nine Network’s Community Cinema Series begins a new season of free documentary screenings on September 1 with the moving film Pray the Devil Back to Hell, about how women are emerging as leaders for peace in international conflicts. The monthly Community Cinema Series previews some of the films featured weekly on the television series Independent Lens, which returns to Nine PBS on Sunday, October 23 at 10:30 p.m. The Community Cinema Series screenings take place at the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park. Most include a panel and audience discussion hosted by Nine’s Jim Kirchherr, although some films may instead be followed by a conversation with the producer or a presentation in keeping with the film’s theme, such as poetry readings in American Sign Language that will accompany the October film. The screenings start at 7:00 p.m. Coming films are: Deaf Jam (October 13), about poetry slams for New York City deaf teens; We Still Live Here (As Nutayuneân) (November 3), about the unprecedented return of Wampanoag, an American Indian language with no native speakers; Troop 1500 (December 1), which tells how a unique Girl Scout troop unites mothers in prison with their daughters; Daisy Bates: First Lady of Little Rock (January 12), about a black woman who was a feminist before the term was invented; More Than a Month (February 2), a humorous look at an African American filmmaker’s nineNet.org

Nine to Grow On Regions and Food The world’s best chefs reveal their culinary inspirations in Cuisine Culture, a new, 13-part series taped on location across the globe. In the restaurant kitchens of these culinary masters, host and chef Ashley Charles James explores the regional influences that make their cuisine distinctive. The series airs Saturdays at 2:00 p.m. on Nine PBS beginning September 24. This recipe by Josiah Citrin, the chef of Melisse in Santa Monica, California, is included in the October 1 episode.
3 pounds sweet onions 1 tablespoon sugar 6 cups chicken stock 1/2 Yukon gold potato, peeled and diced 1/2 cup cream 2 cups grated Parmigiano Reggiano 2 tablespoons butter Salt and white pepper to taste Crab Cake 10 ounces fresh lump crab meat 1 potato, baked and smashed Chopped chives Chopped parsley Chopped shallots 1 tablespoon heavy cream 1 egg For dredging All purpose flour 1 egg mixed with 1/4 cup cream Panko or bread crumbs
Prepare the crab cakes: Mix all the ingredients in a bowl. Season to taste. Form into 2-inch circles about 1 inch high. Place the flour, egg and cream mixture, and panko into three separate dishes. Dip each cake into the flour, patting off any excess, then coat with the egg and dredge in the panko. Re-dip a second time into the egg and panko. Keep cold in the refrigerator. Prepare the crab salad: Mix all ingredients together and season to taste. Add a few drops fresh lemon juice. To finish: Reheat the soup in a large saucepot and finish with 2 tablespoons butter. While the soup is heating, heat

a large skillet over high heat. Add oil about 1/8 inch deep. Add the crab cakes and cook for 2 to 3 minutes on each side or until evenly browned and hot. Set aside and keep hot. To serve: Preheat the soup bowls. Place 1/4 teaspoon crab salad in the middle of the soup bowls (to prevent crab cake from sliding), place a crab cake in bowl and cover with a mound of crab salad. Froth soup with a hand blender so it is light and airy. Serve, then ladle soup around the crab cakes at the table. To serve cold: Whip the soup before serving. Present the same way. Serves six.
