INTERVIEW / Dimitri James Meet Dimitri James, professional makeup artist and founder of Skinn Cosmetics. We chat with him about beauty, his makeup artist call and he reveals lots of interesting beauty tricks and tips.

Dimitri, please tell our readers a little bit about yourself: I’ve been doing makeup since I was 6 years old. I locked myself in my mother’s bathroom and mixed all of her nail polishes together because I was convinced that Revlon hadn’t made the right color yet. I have always had this gift to look at a woman’s face, hair or body and see the finished product and I’ve always had the skills to get me there. Of course I have had training in makeup. I am cosmetologist and a licensed esthetician. I have trained other makeup artists but more than anything, what I have learned has come to me naturally.

At what point in your life did you realize you wanted to become a makeup artist and why?

I wanted to be a makeup artist honestly since I was 12 years old. I sat in front of the television and I drew out all the Charlie’s Angels and then I took eye shadows from my mom’s bathroom and completely made over their whole faces. So it’s just something that I have always known I was supposed to do. The

deal my parents made for me was I was not allowed to go to cosmetology school until I went to college first. So I did that but even before I graduated college I was a platform makeup artist for Germain Monteil Cosmetics, Charles of the Ritz cosmetics and Borghese. So really I worked my way through college doing makeup at department stores and as a platform makeup artist for these companies and I toured the entire southwest and California.

What else do you do that we don’t know about like hobbies or passions?

One thing that people may not realize is that I just don’t do makeup. I do hair and makeup. I’m great at styling clothing. As far as hobbies go, I spend most of my time exercising. I am a firm believer of working out to keep yourself healthy and that could be spiritually, mentally and physically. I think you have to concentrate on every aspect of your life to continue to grow in every category. I work very hard and spend many hours in the back seat on airplanes or on television doing shows. When I’m not doing shows, I’m working with customers. So I believe you have to keep your physical and spiritual self up and have your personal life in order as if your looking at a pie: each piece needs to be balanced.

INTERVIEW / Dimitri James We know you as Dimitri the makeup artist, but in another life you were…?

This is the only job I have ever had. I am the only person I know that has had only one job for his whole life. I have only ever done skincare and makeup and hair. So I’m not only Dimitri the makeup artist I do hair too.

Where do you find inspiration? What music, movies, and books do you like?

I like to people watch. I find inspiration in other people. I like to look and watch and listen and interact with other people. I get more inspiration by sitting in a mall or a casino in Las Vegas watching people walk by. I love looking at every type of person. I can look at women and see what is going on see what they need and see what they are trying to do and I get it. I come up with a product a minute sitting in that environment looking at people.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I love when I can create a product or color in my mind and present it to the public and they love it. I just helps to reinforce that we are on the same page as our customers.

Pretty, beautiful and real.

I don’t like queen for the day, or wild avant-garde. I have never been interested in gluing feathers to eyelashes. I have always been more interested in looking at a woman’s face and bringing out the best features. And diminishing features we don’t want to stand out. I call it eliminate or accentuate. I like pretty faces that are realistic. I don’t like queen for a day makeovers. There is a time and place for those kinds of makeovers but not for everyday women.

Do you think makeup helps to define one’s personality?

Yes, there are all kinds of ways you can use makeup.

One way to use makeup is to use your personality or the way you feel to create the person you want to be that day. Whether it is sexy or powerful business-like.

Makeup is just an extension of your personality.

And what about male makeup... Yes or no?

No, I have to say I’m old school. I am 45 years old.

Every time I walk by a cosmetic counter and see the boys wearing as much makeup as the girls I think it is a wonderful creative expression. They are selling makeup and they are passionate about it and I absolutely love it on them, but it's not right for me.

What are 3 words that describe your makeup style?

INTERVIEW / Dimitri James What made you decide it was time to create Skinn Cosmetics, your own makeup and skin care line?

How did you do it and how much work goes into creating a makeup line?

You know that is very interesting. If I knew what I know today, I would probably have never done it because I would have been too scared. We really did the impossible. I decided in 1994, I was sitting in a meeting in New York and I was the national sales manager and I was responsible for the entire country. I had somewhere about 400 accounts. It was my responsibility to do everything. I had to have the makeup artists and estheticians trained. I made sure that the account executives were servicing the accounts correctly that worked with all the major retailers. I was sitting there with the owner of a cosmetics company. We were discussing products and one concern that I had was that the product was not living up to the expectations. I was clearly told that it was not about the product but about sales. The goal was to make a product as inexpensively and you can make it and sell it for as much as you can possibly sell it for. That’s when I realized that most of what customers bought was nothing more than hype. Not only was it nothing more than hype but because it was so expensive to sell products in traditional retail. You had account executives, makeup artists, advertising, as well as, counter space to pay for. The product had to be made so

cheaply and sold so expensively to keep a company in business. I knew right then and there that I had to try something different. I decided that I wanted to make a cosmetic and at that same time there was a new market place that was opening up and it was electronic retailing on television. The beauty of television retailing was that it eliminated the department store, the sales staff, and the need for makeup artists, estheticians and sales clerks. With all of those savings I was able to make quality product and sell it direct to 80 million viewers at a time.

As I was beginning to piece all of this information together, with $2,500 on a credit card, I created my first product line out of a garage. I looked in the yellow pages and found a manufacturer, today we manufacture ourselves, but in those days I went to the manufacturer. I created 3 simple products that were highly effective. So off of that $2,500 in my third year of business I sold 12 million dollars in retail.

In your own words what is Skinn’s philosophy?

My philosophy is to create products that women need that are made as high quality as possible with today’s technology. Give them multiple benefits so that one product does the job of three or four products. Get them into the customer’s hands at a price that most people can afford. We also try and make them natural and keep them from being toxic. We eliminate unnecessary ingredients and keep them

highly concentrated and non toxic. We are very green.

What projects are you currently working on?

I am working on a few treatment items. One is for the neck. Necks are definitely an age zone. The problem is necks age one of two ways. Women either get thinning skin on the neck which was once termed chicken neck or they tend to get heavy around the jaw line or double chin. So the cream I have created addresses these problems in totally different ways. They are called ChinUp.There is a Formula 1 and a Formula 2. The first formula is for skin that is thinning and collapsing.

The second formula is for women who are heavier and have heavier neck lines, forward jaw lines and double chins. It is a streamlining and sliming treatment for the neck area. Both are firming.

Another project, that I am really excited about, is a brand new line called Collagenesis. It is a multi national effort that represents the technologies of 8 different countries in creating the most powerful anti aging treatments available today. It will be at least ten years ahead of its time. That will be coming out sometime around February. It utilizes the same technology that they use to keep organs alive during transplant surgery.

INTERVIEW / Dimitri James Now, considering the season we're in, can you tell us a few makeup tips for a festive look?

Holiday is the one time of year where you can wear a little bit of sparkle. People think ‘Oh holiday more makeup’ it’s not necessarily more its how the makeup reflects light. What women should do is weaea winter skin illuminator. Either apply it under foundation or mix it with foundation to create a more luminous skin. This will reflect light better in evening or candle light. It is definitely wonderful to have luminous skin.

Then when it comes to your lips and your eyes look for shades that have a little more sparkle. Stick to a palette that works best for you. This is the time to wear frosted eye shadow or the lip gloss that has a little more sparkle to it. Same goes for you nails. Fake eyelashes are fun for the holidays also.

The two biggest mistakes women make eyebrows and blush.

The best thing to do when it comes to your eyebrows is to go to a brow specialist have them done once professionally and have them show you how to keep them up. Even sophisticated women with great senses of styles have bad eye brows.

Eyebrows are the most important things to fix. They can take years off of your appearance. They can instant eye and face lift. They are the exclamation points for you eyes.

The second biggest mistake is misplaced blush. I suggest if you are not good at blush get my highlight, blush, bronze and contour kit and follow the instructions. If you don’t want to buy my kit, get a really easy and basic bronzer and use that.

And what is an easy trick to go straight from the office-desk face to a night-time party look?

Add a coat of mascara, line your eyes a little heavier, apply a fresh coat of powder foundation to your skin and use a little darker shade of lip stick.

With such a variety of makeup on the market today, how should women select their cosmetic products?

They should watch my shows because everything I make is better than what it is replacing and costs you less!

Being a makeup artist and such an attentive people watcher, I bet you can’t help but look at women as the walk on the street and think “If I could only fix that.” What are the common makeup mistakes women make and how should they fix them?

According to you, what are the best and worst trends in the beauty industry right now?

One thing you have to remember with trends is that it has to translate to your appearance, personality and unfortunately your age. What looks good in the magazine on that model or that cosmetic ad, is not

necessarily what you should be applying.

With that said I love the smoky heavy eyes that are in style right now. I don’t know many women that can wear black eye shadow on their entire eye and still function in reality. Translate the looks.

The worse trend is that we are seeing less and less lipstick. Women over 40 need lipstick and women over 40 don’t do as well with just lip gloss. Women over 40 tend to lose skin pigment and get what I like to call the beige’s. That is where their hair, skin and makeup all look beige. It is important to play up certain features with a little more color. One of the worst trends is that lipstick is so out but so necessary.

I do love that fact that fake eyelashes are back they are so fun.

INTERVIEW / Dimitri James What is your favorite beauty product of them all?

My favorite all time beauty product... I don’t want to sound like im pushing my line but my favorite product ever created doesn’t exist anywhere else but in my brand. I created it for a reason. It is the tinted Orchid Gel primer. It can be used with or without makeup. It can be used instead of makeup, under makeup or over makeup. What it does is making skin look perfect and porcelain and flawless - yet it is invisible. As a makeup artist there are times when I need to use an airbrush machine. Using them on many people can become costly and take to much time. It is not always in the budget. I created the Orchid Gel primer and Orchid Gel tinted primer to recreate the look of smoothness like from an airbrush machine without having to use one.

What is the best way a woman can take care of her face and improve her overall beauty?

Cleanse your skin before you go to bed at night.

The biggest mistake a woman can make with her skin is not washing her face at night. During the day free radicals, petro chemicals they all attack your skin. The makeup gets into your pores, the dirt, the grime, the sweat, the pollution they all accumulate on the skin. All of those create free radicals that damage skin. If you don’t wash them off and apply good skin care at night your skin is damaging and fast forwarded at night when it should be repairing. Night is the time when your skins natural repairing processes are at their

peak. Rather than looking older every morning you have the opportunity to look younger every morning.

The most important thing a woman can do is use the proper skin care at night and use my product I’d like to add...

What skincare product you recommend after washing your face at night?

I am firm believer in using serums before you put your creams on. I think that you can take advantage of all the collagen rebuilding actives and peptides that work effectively in serums. In my line you would use my Nutri-Lift Serum and my Wrinkle Balm Extreme treatment over it at night. I also make a very unique product called Wrinkle Balm Extreme Night Treatment for normal to dry skin. It is a solid butter. The problem with many treatments is that they evaporate off of your skin. I created a product that you can apply over other treatments that actually seals everything in until you wash it off. So your anti aging treatments stay on your skin all night long.

Hmm, don’t spend your money on crazy expensive brushes in the department. Go to the art supply store and buy your brushes there. You can get the highest quality sable and many interesting angles to work with. They will cost you a third of what you would pay in the department store.

FACE First Dimitri applied Orchid Gel Mattifying Treatment Seal to the entire face. Next, he applied Natural Light Skin Illuminizer in Candle Light.

Then he used High Definition Cotton Foundation in Light Cream and Triple Cover Concealer Wheel on the entire eyelid, under and around the eyes.

EYES The outer half of Adrienne's upper and lower lid was lined with the Black Kohl eyeliner. Then, the Brown Kohl eyeliner was used on the inner half both upper and lower lashes.

Gold Luxe Premier Eye Shadow was applied to the upper lids. Coral Luxe Premier Eye Shadow was used on the outer lid and crease.

Luxe Premier Eye Shadow in Sand was used under the eyebrows. Individual lashes were applied to the upper lid. Additional eyeliner was applied.

Charcoal Luxe Premier EyeShadow was smudged on the upper and lower lids. Luxe Premier Mascara (Black) was applied to the upper and lower lashes.

FINISHING TOUCHES Dimitri next used the Highlight, Blush Bronze & Sculpt Kit. To finish the look, Dimitri applied the Nude Beige lipstick from The Dressed to the Nines Lip Color Compact.

All SKINN Dimitri James products were used with the exception of the individual faux eyelashes.

10 steps to achieve lash perfection Lashes, lashes, lashes, we all want longer, darker, thicker lashes. Whether you want to go for the natural beauty or the glamazon babe look, if mother nature hasn't been generous with you and you haven't been blessed with naturally long lashes, mascara can make it look as if you were. As a matter of fact, most women answered our survey stating that without mascara "they almost feel naked".

So here are some tricks of the trade that will come in handy to make the most of your eyelashes and frame your eyes beautifully.

10 steps to achieve lash perfection

1. Layer clear & regular mascara If you want your lashes to look thicker, use a clear mascara as a "base" the way you put a primer to your skin before foundation or a clear basecoat before nail polish. Then put on your regular mascara: the clear mascara will create a thicker base for mascara to stick to.

2. Try a different color Instead of choosing always the same black, try brightening up your eyes with a deep navy mascara. Dark blue will make the white of your eyes look whiter, and it will emphasize the natural color of your eyes. With your eyes popping out like that, no one will notice if your lashes aren't super long.

When choosing a mascara, why not getting one that actually does your lashes good? Provitamin B5 and Rice bran creamy mascara by Korres gives extra volume, length and colour to your lashes while its natural ingredients strengthen them to improve their natual appearance.

6. Set in place Instead of using potentially dangerous lash curlers, an easy way to curl your lashes is to hold the mascara wand in place at the roots of your lashes for several seconds, then glide on. Repeat this until you see that the lashes get a nice upward curve.

7. Layer the right away Some women put mascara on, then go back to it several minutes later with disastrous results. Don't wait too long before applying a second coat of mascara: if you do, the wet layer will create clumps when it meets the dry layer.

If you sleep with mascara on, not only will it smear during the night and stain your 300-thread-count pillowcases, it will also weaken your lashes and break them.

4. Some wands work better than others From our experience, thin mascara brushes are better compared to big, fatty ones. A thinner brush allows you to reach into the corner of your eyes and coat each and every lash - thus making it look like you have tons of lashes. In other words, thin wands give you and your eyelashes more control.

9. Replace regularly You might not think about it, but mascara is a breeding ground for nasty germs. Avoid problems to such a delicate area as your eyes by replacing your favorite mascara every three months at max.

5. Remove excess mascara from the wand Especially when you have a new mascara, smudging happens. To avoid that, pat your mascara wand lightly on a paper towel before putting it on. The paper will absorb big clumps of mascara and the application will be

Don't put too much or it will end up in your eyes, irritating them. Aloe vera gel will moisturize your eyelashes after mascara, and will improve their natural appearance with time.
