Rich, dark eyes and dramatic nails

MORE NEWS ON BLOG.NINEBYZERO.COM

Hottest makeup trends for winter Rich, dark eyes and dramatic nails Get the look To achieve this look, divide your face in ephasized and neutral parts. All attention must be on the eyes, therefore the rest of the face should look natural (that doesn't mean it requires no makeup, au contraire, it requires makeup that is so subtle that it looks not made-up). Create a smooth base with a liquid foundation, and use a lipgloss on the lips. With a black pencil draw a thick line over the lash line, and smudge it outwards to create a dramatic cat's eye. Redraw the same line with liquid eyeliner. Finally, pile up a volumizer mascara. For perfect nails, create an equally sophisticated effect with a clear polish base. Use a dark color (black, aubergine, dark purple) and paint the complete surface of the nail - not leaving any space on the sides.

Besides being a makeup artist and hair stylist, what else can you tell us that we don't know about you yet? I come from a creative family which has been a great help and source of inspiration. My Dad was always very technically minded in his job and problem solving around the home. My mum has a natural gift for making things out of anything that was lying around, dressmaking, dolls, cake decoration also painting and drawing, all of these things I was fortunate to be involved with. For a short time I used to make Jewellery and one off pieces for people. I would seek out unusual textiles to use to create something a little different than you would typically find on the high street. Since then I’ve incorporated all these experiences into another part of my work. Other than Makeup and Hair, I also make costumes, hats and headdresses for clients and creative collaborations that sometimes tie into photo stories.

At what point in your life did you realise you wanted to be a makeup artist and why?

Photography by Andrew Farrington - www.andrewf.com Model - Anastasiya Kasimova

I had quite a strict childhood and really wasn’t allowed to wear makeup for quite some time. I used to save up all my money to secretly buy myself a small collection of weirdly wonderful jewel coloured makeup. At school I used to grab any of my friends who would sit and be my muse to practice on, I got so much enjoyment out of transforming them; I soon had regular appointments by my peers at lunchtime! When I was at the point of choosing my career, I actually wanted to either be, a chef, interior designer or a vet! But my mother persuaded me to go into hairdressing as she was also a hairdresser and she wanted me to have a secure career to follow, but when I found out more about the courses available, I saw that I could also do beauty therapy with hairdressing, but I soon found that I had no interest in de fluffing peoples legs and popping blackheads! I adored the makeup classes and that’s when I realised makeup was the right choice for me!

Meet Andrea Perry-Bevan, make-up artist What is your favorite thing about your job? There are many facets to my job and they’re never the same, I could have a last minute call to rush out and do celebrities makeup for an interview photo call. But my very favourite thing of all is when I have the opportunity to work on one of my own stories and see it come to life before my eyes! Sometimes this can take a while to pull off because of the many elements you need to gather together to make it work, props, set design, costume, location, the right models and an amazing photographer! What has been the most challenging makeup you have ever done? It’s really quite hard to say what has been the most challenging shoot as there have been many

really interesting shoots that have had some tricky or technical moments. I would have to say that the one shoot that took a lot of pre planning was The Cherry Queen shoot Andrew Farrington and I did for the bridal designer Elizabeth Emanuel for her vintage archive collection. It was shot in an industrial site full of Cherry Pickers, the model was wearing one of the Elizabeth Emanuel gowns and with a 7 metre hair piece that I had made for a Rapunzel style effect to be tossed over the top of the raised cherry picker, I had to construct the hair in such a way that it didn’t pull the model over or give discomfort. The makeup had to be bold and bright as it was shot from afar. Some of the other shots from the Emanuel collaboration can be found here http://ee.andrewfphotography. com/ Photography by Andrew Farrington - www.andrewf.com Model - Jessica Croasdale

Meet Andrea Perry-Bevan, make-up artist What projects are you working on currently? There are so many projects going on at the moment, testing with some new photographers and fantastic models. But I have some of my own stories waiting to happen within the next couple of months and into the New Year. Luckily I have a great team of creative friends who are just as excitable as me who are involved in making it happen! One of the immediate shoots coming up is for a fashion editorial with Shirlaine Forrest photography and Carly Petitt-Taylor who is a jewellery designer creating the unicorn’s horn. The shoot is based around a kind of winter wonderland, lots of dreamy winter clothes, a beautiful elfin-esq model and a unicorn. Where do you find inspiration? What music, movies and books do you like? I find inspiration in everything, Sometimes the look and feel of a textile could make me think of a memory and transfer that idea into a story.

Photography by Shirlaine Forrest – www.shirlainephotos.co.uk Model - Kitty Chu

I don’t like the idea of direct inspiration, copying a look is a no no for me, unless a client asks me to do so, but that is my only stipulation! But when I am working on a unique story, I soak up things that are surrounding me at the time, i.e. the colour pallet in an artist’s painting, to the natural curve and shading gradient you can find on a petal.

I am a massive rock/metal fan, Whitesnake, Metallica, Marilyn Manson to Lacuna Coil. I love all kinds of movies, just depends on my mood at the time, but I do enjoy watching films with a strong female lead, Nicole Kidman, Kate Beckinsale to Monica Bellucci. I collect books from some amazing artists and photographers such as: Boris Vallejo, Chris Achilleos, Olivia Deberardinis and Bob Carlos Clarke. In this era, do you think makeup helps define one's own personality? Definitely yes! Makeup and hair is a real personal self expression and a means of communication to others, an example of this can be found in music artists when they are developing a look to promote themselves in their career, hence why companies spend thousands on getting the right team together. I know from a personal point of view, I would run a mile if someone came at me with the intention to cut my hair short as this is just not me!

Meet Andrea Perry-Bevan, make-up artist

Your make-up work is artistic, but can you tell us the quickest make-up a woman can create in the morning when she only has 5 minutes to get ready before work? I think when you haven’t got much time at all; the best idea would to make sure that you follow some basic rules. A clean fresh makeup would be best for most jobs, I know myself if I have a shoot where I have to get up at 2-5am I don’t want to be spending too much time on my makeup. A lightweight foundation that is flexible and doesn’t crack throughout the day like the Bourjois 10 hour sleep effect is a great product that you don’t have to worry about. Apply a small amount of this in a few areas all over the face and blend away into your moisturised face with a foundation brush.

Photography by Andrew Farrington - www.andrewf.com Model - Anastasiya Kasimova

Using a concealer or a light reflective product like YSL Touche Eclat around the nostrils, and a little dotted down the nose, under the brow bones, under eyes and maybe a little on top of the cheek bones, and over the cupids bow using the same foundation brush work the product in well to avoid lines.

Use a cream blusher in a 2 shades darker than your skin tone but that has a warmer glow, I use M.A.C. cream blush in “Uncommon” for this. Dot a small amount on the apples of the cheeks, temples and in the socket line of the eye, pat lightly to blend and contour your features. Pick up a small amount of loose powder on a large brush, tap off the excess and lightly dust over the face for a light setting but enough to still have some natural sheen coming through. Using a lip pencil that is the same shade as your lips, outline and correct any A-symmetrical lip shapes, finish off by filling in the rest of the lip with the pencil and apply a clear gloss or your favourite lip balm in the centre of the lips, avoid the all over gloss look, that’s better for the evening. Depending on your natural colouring, choose either a Dark Brown/Grey or even a funky colour eyeliner or cream eyeshadow on the upper lid close to the lashes, blend the soft colour up the eyelid to no more than ¼ or ½ way up the lid to give a very mild smudgy look that will emphasise the shape of eye and make it stand out ready to finish with eyelash curlers and a few coats of mascara to go!

Meet Andrea Perry-Bevan, make-up artist That sounds great Andrea! Thank you. And what is an easy way to change a day make-up into a night-time party face? Following on from the work look, for an easy transition from that straight into night would be to make the most of the eyes. As there isn’t too much product on the eyes to worry about. Use a dark cream eye colour of your choice. For easiness I’m going to suggest a Dark Brown, using a brush, apply all over the lid and blend the top edge into to socket line and wing outwards and upwards, use a fine angled brush and run the same product under the eye close to the lash line and smudge, don’t worry if it looks a bit crazy at this point. Set the cream shadow with shades of Brown all over and again wing and soften the shadow up wards and out wards to elongate the eye shape. With a clean blending brush keep stretching the shadow into the desired shape, the more you blend the more dramatic the look. Add a little Black eyeshadow to the lash line and outer corner of the eye, this will give it a stronger look and help give the eye more shape. If you have the time I would suggest using either individual eyelashes all over the natural lash line or maybe a few on the outer edges to help open the eye up even more. If you find it easier use a full strip eyelash for a more defined evening style.

Add more colour to the cheek area and lipstick of your choice with a dash of gloss to finish!

Meet Andrea Perry-Bevan, make-up artist Being a hair stylist and make-up artist, I bet you can't help but look at women as they walk on the street and think: "Oh I would love to fix that!". What are the common make-up & hair mistakes most women make and how should they fix them? Good makeup should have balance, good contouring, highlighting and shading in the right places. Baring this in mind I have seen where the top or bottom of a person’s face is over powering the opposite, for example they have used a too bright a lip and cheek colour and left the top half of the face without any definition making it look lost.

Photography by Andrew Farrington - www.andrewf.com Model - India Hobson

If someone really likes making the lips a focal point they are better to do this with a basic blusher for contouring lightly and maybe a very small hint of colour on the apples of the cheeks so the makeup doesn’t look bottom heavy but the eyes should still have some highlight and shadow to lift the eye area even if they don’t want the eye makeup to be bold, it still should have a balance. A classic one is the wrong shade of foundation! If you’re quite

in-experienced in choosing the right foundation, you should seek the advice of the consultant selling the products, or take a friend with you. The foundation should fade into an invisible veil on the skin; the best place to test it is on the jaw line nearest to the palest part of the neck. Use a foundation brush to work in the last remaining product left on the brush around the hairline and jaw. Sometimes I will add a little moisturiser in with any leftover foundation to dilute and take it a little way down the neck for a seamless effect. As mentioned before, I’m a fan of using a fine angled brush and an eyeliner pot to create a sharp line close to the lashes. I have seen where a too chunky an eyeliner pencil has been used near the lashes, but doesn’t actually meet the lash line, creating a very ugly White band between the line and the lashes. This insanity has to stop!! There are so many faux pas within hair and makeup I could go on, but I think more attention to detail and learning basic facts on how to keep a look simple is needed. I’d love to see women taking more care in their appearance. MORE NEWS ON BLOG.NINEBYZERO.COM

Meet Andrea Perry-Bevan, make-up artist With such a variety of makeup on the market today, how should women select their cosmetics brands? There are many reasons for personally choosing a brand, maybe a person has sensitive skin and would be best suited to a brand that caters for that. There are so many brands competing these days and also more and more people getting into makeup artistry that the brands are pushing to be seen as a leading force in up to the minute trends. I’m not a faithful follower of a brand and I do think that many of the products out there are gimmicky, trying to push for an impulse buy, I’ve been a victim of this, especially when I first started out, only to find later I had a product already in my kit that could have done the same job! There are free samples out there to try, be honest and tell the consultant that you’re unsure of the product as it’s new to you, quite often they will give you a few samples to try out! What is your favorite beauty product of all? An old faithful that sticks with you as years and new collections pass by?

Photography by Shirlaine Forrest - www.shirlainephotos.co.uk Model - Ebishu Mukhtar

From your experience, what’s the best way a woman can take care of her face and improve her overall beauty? (skincare routine, nutrition etc.) It’s good to keep up with a regular routine of cleansing the skin morning and night, keeping the face free of grime as the skin renews itself while you are sleeping. Skin that isn’t cleansed before bedtime is more likely over time to prematurely age and gain deep blackheads. I notice a change in my skin if I don’t drink enough water and don’t get enough sleep. It’s a known fact, but we do treat our skin so badly at times. At least one day a week we should spend some quality time pampering ourselves to stay polished. A balanced diet is key in keeping you running at your best, to prevent things like hair loss, dull skin, brittle nails etc. We all need to have a look at our diet and lifestyle occasionally, to review how we all can take some positive steps to improving our health.

Matt Black eyeshadow must be long wearing! The 2 best products I can suggest is M.A.C. in Carbon, which is a pure matt Black and Illamasqua in Machine, which is a matt Black with Silver sparkles. MORE NEWS ON BLOG.NINEBYZERO.COM

Meet Andrea Perry-Bevan, make-up artist Andrea, we loved learning all about you and your beauty tips. Now please leave us with your best trick-of-thetrade beauty tip: Eye primers are amazing, and make eye makeup long lasting. There are many on the market now and I’ve tried and researched many of them. The idea behind an eye primer is to grab a hold of the eyeshadow to make the colour eyeshadow or loose pigment shadow more vivid and also give a deeper long lasting effect, but I’ve found that some are a little too greasy and therefore will eventually make the shadow crack and smudge. The greasiness will grab the shadow initially but will start sliding off after a few hours. The best type of primer is one that after a few minutes will dry and set after you have applied the shadow in the desired area. I use primers all the time when I know that the makeup will go through a certain degree of stress, i.e. a wedding or a full day shoot. See point 9 in the “What’s in your make-up bag?” section.

What's in your make-up bag, Andrea? Now that've learned all about you, please tell our readers which are the 10 must-have items you always carry with yourself (when doing makeup or for yourself ), the ones that are the basis for your work: 1. Chanel Pro Lumiere Foundation – in shade 20 Clair – Cameo This is a fantastic foundation for a good coverage that isn’t heavy or chalky on the skin, you can add a small amount in the areas you would normally use concealer for more coverage, or dilute it with moisturiser for a lighter finish. 2. Illamasqua Loose Powder in White White powder saves me so much fuss in my kit, I do have some normal shades of powder but I tend to reach for this time and again, you can use it on any face shade, even the darkest, brush on lightly to set your base, but also I use this often because I work with very pale to White period style makeup. 3. Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage in SC-3 A creamy concealer that comes with 2 shades to mix and match the different tones of the skin, I use the lighter shade for highlighting under the eye, brow bone and down the centre of the nose for a defined sculpted finish, it’s also good for blending on top of just moisturised skin for an unfussy day time look. 4. Benefit Brow Zings in 03 - Deep I use this brow kit all the time, I swear by it, one side is waxy to tame and set the hairs, it’s a perfect shade for me, I have a thing for well sculpted eyebrows, and they are the basis for a great eye makeup! 5. M.A.C .Pigment in Vanilla M.A.C. Vanilla pigment probably is my most used product of all, I use it for highlighting all parts of the face and body there’s so much product in this little pot it seems to last forever, it can be mixed with creams, mixing mediums, all manner of things but Vanilla is a great colour to offset any shades!

6. Bobbi Brown Long Wear Gel Eyeliner in Black Ink 1 Great eyeliner, I prefer using these handy pots over pencils because you can get more control with a fine angled brush, pencils can be used as a good base to apply shadows over, but when it comes to drawing an arty line, this product is the best! 7. Nars Blusher in Torrid The Nars blushers are sheer with a hint of colour so you have more control building up to the depth you like. 8. M.A.C. Mixing Medium – Eyeliner M.A.C. Mixing mediums can be used in many ways, the one I have states it is for the medium of eyeliner, mixing it with pigments or glitters to make your own funky eyeliner invention, but I also use it set eyeshadow and mascara to waterproof them. 9. M.A.C. Paint These little tubes last a long time; my main use for this product is as a base for eyeshadow. (see trick of the trade beauty tip for usage of this product) 10. YSL Mascara Singulier in Deep Black A new mascara on the market, it delivers its promise, long full curled lashes and a true Black

SONNET OF AUTUMN by Charles Baudelaire THEY say to me, thy clear and crystal eyes: "Why dost thou love me so, strange lover mine?" Be sweet, be still! My heart and soul despise All save that antique brute-like faith of thine; And will not bare the secret of their shame To thee whose hand soothes me to slumbers long, Nor their black legend write for thee in flame! Passion I hate, a spirit does me wrong. Let us love gently. Love, from his retreat, Ambushed and shadowy, bends his fatal bow, And I too well his ancient arrows know: Crime, horror, folly. O pale marguerite, Thou art as I, a bright sun fallen low, O my so white, my so cold Marguerite.
